I have some general comments on optimizing profitability based on working in heap leach operations in tropical environments. Many of my planned comments this morning have been stated earlier in the Conference. I get the opportunity to say only a few words, and follow up on some specific comments and concerns. In normal operations, stack the ore higher, where possible. The surface area of the stacked ore controls the total solution volume that can be sprayed on the pad at a specific time period. With higher lifts, solution will contact more ore particles as it percolate through the lift, and therefore the solution grade flowing through the base will be increased, whether it is freshly stacked or almost completely leached ore. This also allows more tonnage to be stacked per lift on the pad, decreasing conveyor movement and downtime. Increasing from 6 to 8 meter (20 to 26 feet) lifts have worked successfully, and some mines are using 10 meter (33 feet) lifts in 10,000-15,000 dmtpd plants. The same concept will work with smaller plants, but initial 6 meter lifts should be used until the start-up period has shown the leaching is working as planned. As the stacked ore lifts get higher, the solution flowing through the highest lift is diluted by solution retained in the lower ones. Eventually no real increase is noted from putting fresh ore in service, and gold production rate suffers. To address the dilution problem, an HDPE liner should be installed between each 2 to 4 lifts, depending on each site specific lift height, recovery, % slump in the lift, recovery rates, and grade treated, among others. The surface of the previous lift should be leveled and sloped to control the effluent draining from the planned lift, then the liner is placed, including berms and discharge pipes. The intermediate HDPE liner does not need to be completely sealed as would be the case with the base liner, and can accept some solution penetrating into the lower lifts. A one-mm (40-mil) thickness liner can be used. This intermediate liner allows the upper lift(s) higher-grade effluent to report to the pad discharge point. This will maintain higher gold solution grades going to the ponds. The slopes of the previous lifts should not be covered with HDPE in this concept, and precipitation falling on the lower lift slopes and benches can be directed to barren or surge ponds.

This paper describes a detailed geostatistical study of producing copper orebodies at Mount Isa Mines Limited in Queensland, Australia. As a result of this work, kriging has been adopted for grade estimation for final stope design at Isa Mine. Extensive variogram and back analysis studies indicate that one relative variogram model can be used to give optimal kriged grade estimates from production sampling throughout the 100 million tonne copper orebody complex. The kriging method replaces a computer technique used at [sa Mine based on inverse distance weighting using parameters chosen from experience.Comparative stope designs based on 10 million tonnes of ore indicate a 16% increase in minable ore tonnage at a grade well above the cut-off, as a result of the geostatistical work.Although this paper is written as a practical description with simple explanations of geostatistical concepts, the theory and use of relative variograms has been expanded. A possible link is suggested between relative variograms and first order kinetics of natural mineral concentration processes.

"In this study, Co-Cr-Mo alloys were produced using a mixture of Co304, Cr203 and Mo03 powders with Al powders by a Self-propagating high temperature synthesis process. SHS is a process of material synthesis that has revealed a number of reactants combinations capable of much higher energy release than conventional explosives. Al203 is added to the mixture to decrease the adiabatic temperature of the system. The thermodynamic simulations and the calculations of adiabatic temperature were examined with FactSage 6.2. In the SHS experiments, different Co304/ Cr203/Mo03 ratios were examined, and their effects on the metal recovery and alloy compositions were carried out. The samples were characterized by using chemical analysis, XRD, XRF and SEM/EDS techniques.IntroductionSelf Propagating High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) has significant advantages compared to the high technology furnace applications, such as very short processing time, simple operation, low energy requirement and low cost [l, 2]. In a SHS process, the ignition starts the combustion and propagates throughout the reactant mixture yielding the desired product. However, the disadvantages of the process such as inhomogeneous or unreacted products due to undesirable reaction rates needs to be overcome by changing some parameters such as ignition temperature, particle size, additive, atmosphere etc. [3, 4]. This work aims to establish a scientific and engineering background in the production of some cast Co-Cr-Mo master alloys via SHS (Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis) metallurgy which is attractive process technique regarding fast and low-cost production ability of cast alloys."

It is well known that plastic deformation alters many of the properties of a metal and subsequent heat-treatment partially or completely restores these properties.l In the deformed or strained state, the metal is unstable and tends to change toward a condition called a "strain-free state." The transformation occurs through recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth—processes that may take place singly or in combination. The distortion of the lattice of an individual grain of a metal in a state of strain may be rather complex in nature, because plastic deformation produces: (I) dislocations within mosaic blocks; (2) elastic variations of the lattice spacings; and (3) gross alterations throughout the lattice, especially along slip planes, along composition planes between a grain and its mechanical twins, and along boundaries of deformation bands. These gross alterations are of the nature of bent planes or rotated regions of the crystal lattice and are revealed by a spread in the orientation of the grain. Although we cannot describe these strains and their formation accurately because of insuffcient knowledge, we can, nevertheless, use the information as well as possible to obtain a better understanding of recovery processes. In recovery, the lattice of a grain is not made anew as it is in recrystallization, but is improved or mended in such a way that the basic structure remains unaltered: Until recatly observations were .that recovery produced no marked changes in the shapes of spots in Laue diffraction patterns, whereas recrystallization did, but now it is known for silicon ferrite2 that Laue spots may become quite sharp entirely through recovery. Consequently, the shape of Laue spots alone would not be a suitable test to distinguish between recovery and recrystallization. There is considerable evidence that the micro-structure usually does not change visibly during recovery. Absence of a visible change in the microstructure, therefore, provides a sufficient test of recovery in many cases. However, including this observation in a definition of recovery as a necessary condition (this is usually done) is unfortunate, because recovery may, as will become evident later, produce new grain boundaries that are visible not only in the microstructure but also in the macrostructure. For the present, therefore, let us say that a necessary condition for a process to be one of recovery is that the principal orientation or orientations of a deformed grain be essentially unchanged throughout the transformation toward the strain-free state. Several transformations may occur that fulfill this condition, and the nature of the distortion in a grain indicates what these must be if the lattice is to be mended in part or fully. Responsible blasting requires that rock throw be controlled to ensure that no danger will result to people and property. This paper describes the development and testing of empirical field calibrated formulae that can be used to evaluate rock throw, provide an early warning of when reduced burden will endanger people and property, and prevent flyrock incidents. Inputs to the formulae are charge mass, burden or stemming height, and a site constant that lies within a general range that can be tightened by site calibration. The output is the distance that rock will be thrown, and this ‘design your own flyrock’ quantification can be used to establish both safe clearance distances, and the critical range of burdens and stemming heights where the situation changes rapidly from safe to hazardous. Examples are given of the use of the model to control flyrock in open-pit mining and quarry operations, in situations which are controlled by both burden and stemming height.

Quality assurance and quality control (or QAQC) plays a key role in safeguarding the level of confidence of the data generated during mineral exploration and mine development, and is also part of the reporting code requirements for resource estimation and reporting, as well as mining investment. Implementation of good policies and working protocols in quality management will result in the generation of reliable information, which is critical for decision-making on the future of the mining project. The use of certified reference materials, i.e., standard, blank, and duplicate samples, proves effective and efficient for ensuring the level of data confidence in terms of precision, accuracy, and sample contamination. This is well demonstrated by the practice of QC in the exploration programme for the chrysotile tailings storage facilities of Havelock Mine, using 1254 samples from 53 drill-holes. Different statistical tools were applied to analyse the assay results from these samples. The outcome substantiates that the QC practice established during the Havelock exploration project is aligned to best practice guidelines in the industry. The resource delineated indicates that the tailings material at Havelock could potentially become a significant source of supply to the global magnesium market.

1. Under the conditions of the tests described herein, the proper use of an incombustible stemming plug of the type discussed prevented ignitions of gas in all tests during the firing of 21 single shots of permissible explosive in cool. In two tests with multiple blasting (four and five shots each) no ignitions resulted. 2. The results of a few tests in this investigation and of numerous tests made previously indicate that fire-clay stemming of the same weight as an incombustible plug provides about the same degree of protection as the plug against gas ignitions during blasting of coal by permissible explosives. 3. The hazard of gas ignition on firing charges of non-permissible 40-percent gelatin dynamite in coal was reduced but not eliminated when the shot holes were stemmed with one or two incombustible plugs or with an equivalent weight of fire clay. 4. On the basis of this investigation, the Bureau of Mines considers the proper use of incombustible stemming plugs of the design tested, under the conditions of the tests described in this paper, to be of equivalent safety as the same weight of fire-clay stemming. This report does not constitute approval or disapproval of the incombustible stemming plugs by the Bureau of Mines. 5. The test data indicate that misfired charges in shot holes stemmed with the incombustible stemming plug cannot be disposed of with certainty by the procedure recommended by the manufacturer. In this investigation the misfired charges failed to detonate in 30 percent of the trials.

In order to reduce the Al2O3 inclusions in 50Cr5MoV roller steel produced by EBT-LF-VD-VC process in a steelmaking plant, the LF refining slag was optimized and the influence of optimized slags with different w(CaO)/w(Al2O3) ratios on reducing inclusions were investigated in the laboratory. The results showed that, when w(CaO) = 50–55%, w(Al2O3) = 25–30% and w(CaO)/w(Al2O3) = 1.5–2.0, this optimized slag can not only reduce massive Al2O3 come from aluminium deoxidation, but also change the remain into plastic CaO-MgO-Al2O3 spherical compound inclusions with 1–5 lm diameter, the harm on the performance of the steel was minimized.

"INTRODUCTION The investigation of the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and the study of methods for eliminating these hazards, conducted by the Bureau of Mines, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. since 1929, was continued during 1933.From May and through December 1933 these tests were supplemented by a study of the manholes of the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the Special Service Department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Boston Consol¬idated Gas Co.The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres and of shipping the samples to Pittsburgh was the same as that used heretofore. In previous reports the relative explosibility of the samples was calculated by adding the percentages of the illuminants, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and ethane, dividing the total by 6.5, and multiplying by 100. Experience has shown that the factor 6.0 is more nearly correct; therefore, this has been used in calculating the relative explosibility of all the samples listed in appendix A and B of this report. "SynopsisThe aim of a blending stockpile is to minimize the natural variation in properties of a material. Two simulation models were written, for coneshell and chevcon stacking, and used to investigate the influence of different stockpile parameters on blending efficiency. The coneshell model is used to show that blending efficiency is highly sensitive to stacked height, with lower output variances observed for higher capacities. Output variance in both models also decreased when the stacker movement increment was decreased. For chevcon stacking, increasing stacker speed significantly increases the blending efficiencies. Increasing the length of the blending tail also reduces output variation, but this parameter would need to be weighed against the accompanying decrease in buffer capacity.IntroductionEven in the most uniform deposit of materials in nature, material properties will vary. The degree of variation can be measured, and usually resembles a normal distribution. The aim of blending and homogenization operations is to minimize the standard deviation of this normal distribution (De Wet, 1994). In general, the reduction in variation will result in a more efficient and cost-effective downstream process. Chromium-containing vanadium slag (V-Cr slag) was obtained by an industrial smelting process of Hongge Ore, which is valuable vanadium-titanium magnetite to extract V and Cr in China. Sodium roasting thermodynamics of V-Cr slag in presence of oxygen were calculated to evaluate the reactivity of chemical compounds. Results showed that the oxidation of FeV2O4 was intensified in presence of Na2CO3 while the oxidation tendency of FeCr2O4 was far lower than that of FeV2O4. It was probably that reactions of impurities including Al2O3, SiO2 and Fe2O3 with Na2CO3 happened and the products can promote the oxidation of vanadium or chromium compounds in lower valence. Based on thermodynamic analysis, a two-step selective extraction process of vanadium and chromium was proposed. Extraction rate of vanadium was 88.6% while 7.0% for chromium in the first extraction step; extraction rate of 90.7% and 95.4% for vanadium and chromium, respectively, were obtained in the second step.

Preparation of briquettes by adding CaF2 reagent into the Australian iron ore powder. The structure and morphology of iron ore briquettes during various reduction stages (i.e., Fe2O3→Fe3O4, Fe3O4→FeO, and FeO→Fe) were observed via an ore microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that CaF2 reacted with SiO2 to form CaO and SiF4 gas during the roasting process. The reduction swelling index decreased from 12.36 to 8.83% when the CaF2 content in the briquettes increased due to CaF2-mediated refinement of the hematite grains during the first stage of the reduction process. Lattice distortion resulting from the presence of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice during the second stage of the reduction process, coupled with an increase in the porosity of the iron ore briquettes and the formation of a low-melting-point slag phase, promoted the anisotropic growth of FeO lamellar crystals, which resulted in an increase in the reduction swelling index from 4.27 to 7.36%. During the third stage of the reduction process, the growth of iron whiskers was promoted by wüstite (FeO) lattice distortion caused by a solid solution of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice; the reduction swelling index increased from 15.61 to 24.72%, resulting in the catastrophic swelling of the iron ore briquettes.

Having seen significant improvements to accident rates in the last 40 years, companies in the Swedish mining industry now show a greater focus on the development of safety cultures throughout their organisations and workplaces. However, there is a lack of research examining the different safety initiatives and strategies practiced in the industry today. This study explores the potential influence and consequences such initiatives may have on the development of safety cultures in the Swedish mining industry. Twelve interviews with experts on safety initiatives from four different Swedish mining organisations were conducted and analysed in a process based on qualitative thematic analysis to identify notable connections to safety culture development. The results of these interviews highlight proclivities in the implementation and use of safety initiatives such as subjects of focus, methods and desired effects. This enables the interpretation of the conceptualisation and methods for the development of safety culture in these organisations based on their approaches to safety development. We believe the results of this study can serve as support for discussions on safety culture development in the Swedish mining industry, and be of interest for international mining industries, in addition to approaches to research in this field. However, we also believe it is important to emphasise the opportunities to approach safety culture in mining from different perspectives than those common today.

Development and production from open cut mines continued its vigorous growth trend during the year 1968. Material handling and transportation were again exposed to the use of larger equipment with shovels, trucks and front end loaders leading the way. Highlights of World Mining Activities Africa: The Anglo American Corp. opened a new high-grade copper mine in Zambia during the year. In Angola, the Companhia Minera do Lobita planned a 3 million ton iron ore production for 1968 from new mines which will ultimately produce 5 million tons per year. A feasibility study of Bethlehem Steel Co., for the development of large high- grade iron ore reserves in Gabon, was in final stages of completion this year and Pickands Mather and Co. continued its investigation of iron ore deposits along the Ivory Coast.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. "The phased application of statistical process control (SPC) infers that processes are classifiable as pre-SPC (or phase zero), phase I and phase II processes, with different objectives being pursued in the different phases. Phase zero processes, defined as processes affected by assignable causes of variation, are characterised as follows: out-of-control with unknown autocorrelation structure having an unknown statistical distribution not performing consistently on target with minimum variability potentially incapable of conforming to the product specifications. The objectives of phase I SPC is to obtain estimates of the mean (µ), variance (s2), probability density function (f(X)) and the autocorrelation structure, as well as transforming the process into a phase II process (defined as a process conforming to specifications and performing on target with minimum variability). As in any other type of research or pragmatic improvement intervention, sampling is required is to achieve these objectives. The challenge of deciding a phase I sampling plan is multifarious since it has to cope with the aforementioned effects of assignable causes and provide for rigour estimates of the unknown parameters. Furthermore, deciding sampling plans in phase I invariably presents a classical catch-22 situation: appropriate sampling is required to determine the autocorrelation structure of a variable, but knowledge of the autocorrelation structure is required to formulate an appropriate sampling plan. This paper suggests, for random variables, guidelines to formulate sampling plans, and presents a methodology to estimate the inherent process parameters of process variables and an approach to identify assignable causes in phase I. CITATION:Breytenbach, W P, 2014. This publication reviews recent U.S. Bureau of Mines studies of frictional ignition of a methane-air environment by coal mining bits cutting into sandstone and the effectiveness of remedial techniques to reduce the likelihood of frictional ignition. Frictional ignition with a mining bit always involves a worn bit having a wear flat on the tip of the bit. The worn bit forms hot spots on the surface of the sandstone because of frictional abrasion. The hot spots then can ignite the methane-air environment. A small wear flat forms a small hot spot, which does not give ignition, while a large wear flat forms a large hot spot, which gives ignition. The likelihood of frictional ignition can be somewhat reduced by using a mushroom-shaped tungsten-carbide bit tip on the mining bit and by increasing the bit clearance angle; it can be significantly reduced by using a water spray nozzle in back of each bit, which is carefully oriented to direct the water spray onto the sandstone surface directly behind the bit and thereby cool the hot spots formed by the worn bit. A bit replacement schedule must be used to avoid the formation of a dangerously worn bit.
