"This paper discusses the unique design and construction circumstances of the cantilevered dual sheet pile walls and the Accordion Sheet Pile Wall for the repair and upgrade of the East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel in Huntington Beach, California that was concluded in 2014. It also describes the 2008 Emergency Sheet Pile Project for the same channel. Both projects utilized the Press-in Piling Method for its low noise and almost no vibration advantages.BackgroundThe East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel is part of the Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) and is operated and maintained by OC (Orange County) Public Works (see Figure 1 for its location). The channel, referred to as OCFCD facility # C05 (C05), had suffered significant toe undercutting and slope erosion of its levee due to a series of storms. These began after the facility was constructed in the 1960’s and culminated in 2005. Consequently, the levee was deemed significantly deficient and was eventually declared as a local emergency in 2007. C05 was an incised channel and its levee was constructed primarily from native materials. Operation and Maintenance (O&M) personnel notified the design staff at OC Public Works to be aware of major consequences associated with the dilapidation problem in the most downstream reach of the channel in the vicinity of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Restoration Project. In 2007, the Orange County Board of Supervisors declared a local emergency to fix the levees with sheet piles to be driven by the Press-in Piling Method, hydraulic pushing piles into ground by holding onto previously installed piles. The project that ensued represented the first in-tandem use on the West Coast of the United States of the Press-in pile driver with its GRB System (Press-in pile driver, a support crane and pile transporter travel on top of already-driven sheet piles). This is further discussed in this paper in the sections titled “Press-in Piling Method” and “GRB System”, respectively. The project repaired approximately 3,800 feet of erosion on the north levee of C05 with 45-foot long cantilevered sheet piles. The sheet piles design constraints are discussed in this paper in the section titled “C05 2008 Emergency Sheet Pile Project (Phase 1)”. Between 2012 and 2014, another mile’s worth of levee reach was improved with the Soil-Mix-Sandwich (SMS) Method. This concept consisted of deep soil cement mix (DSCM) columns sandwiched within the dual rows of sheet piles. Additional details on the SMS, its DSCM construction, and its hybrid geo-structure design concepts are well beyond the scope of this discussion, which is primarily focused on sheet piles. Instead, the interested reader is referred to two papers on the SMS and its DSCM metrics (Fayad, 2015; and Arora, et al., 2015). These were presented and published in the Proceedings of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) 2015 Conference on Deep Mixing. Hence, in the section of this paper titled “C05 SMS Dual Sheet Piles Project (Phase 2)” only the sheet pile design constraints of the SMS are covered. Finally, in the area where the project traversed the Alquist-Priolo zone of the Newport-Inglewood tectonic fault, an expandable and deflectable sheet pile wall was used to isolate the flood channel from the Bolsa Chica wetlands. Its details are addressed in the section titled “C05 Accordion Sheet Pile Wall (Phase 2)” of this paper."

The Avebury nickel mine in Western Tasmania is a disseminated nickel sulfide deposit hosted in intensely metasomatised Cambrian ultramafic resulting from later Devonian granite related hydrothermal activity.Variable metasomatism of the ultramafic has formed two distinct gangue mineral assemblages. Less metasomatised ultramafic is comprised of fine grained black antigorite with minor disseminated chromite, magnetite and pentlandite. Intensely metasomatised ultramafic is altered to a pale grey or green, coarsely crystalline tremolite/actinolite and diopside assemblage with minor magnetite, chromite and sulfides. Both gangue mineral assemblages are frequently intermixed in ore grade mineralisation.The bimodal gangue of either serpentinite or metasomatised ultramafic presents challenges to drilling, mining, resource estimation and mineral processing as they possess very different physical properties. Mineralised serpentinite has a mean bulk density of 2.8 g/cc and the ultramafic skarn a mean bulk density of 3.2 g/cc. Physically, the ultramafic skarn is hard to break percussively creating difficulties in the crushing circuit and reducing mine development rates. However, it is non-abrasive and grinds readily, resulting in increased diamond drilling rates and increased mill throughput. Conversely the serpentinite gangue is softer and breaks easily resulting in accelerated development rates and crushing circuit throughput. However, its fibrous nature reduces grinding efficiency, increasing bond work indices and reducing diamond drilling rates.Predicting the ratio of serpentinised to metasomatised ultramafic is possible through use of the resource blockmodel, assisting mine scheduling, predicting mill throughput rates, energy consumption and grade control drilling rates.CITATION:Callaghan, T J, 2017. The great majority of stokers used in residential heating installations are of the clinkering type. Because of inherent characteristics of the under- feed combustion process as it occurs in these small stokers, and because of the wide range of operating conditions encountered in residential heating schedules, not all bituminous coals can be used successfully in residential underfeed units. The problem of providing consumer satisfaction has been attacked by the joint efforts of the stoker manufacturers and the coal industry; the stoker manufacturers have been concerned with improving their product to permit the use of a wider range of coals, and coal operators have made every effort to market selected and better prepared coals. In view of the wide range of physical characteristics and chemical properties of bituminous coals, the problems are real and are receiving increased attention.

The Sepon process plant utilises an autoclave to oxidize a flotation concentrate containing pyrite, residual copper minerals, and sulphur. The concentrate is produced from the residue of a preceding atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The function of the autoclave is to provide iron and acid for that atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The key issues in the operation of the autoclave are to maximise the production of acid and ferric ions and to avoid scaling issues related to sulphur balling in the autoclave. Scale control in the autoclave was examined using various dispersants and residue recycle without success. Operation of the autoclave at high temperature and high acidity addressed the scale issue through rapid oxidation of the sulphur and produced a ferric sulphate precipitate in the residue that could be re-leached to provide ferric iron. This paper presents the development steps followed, through batch and continuous piloting that resulted in an autoclave circuit design that addressed the above process requirements. Following definition of the process design basis, modelling of the autoclave operation was carried out to assist with engineering design. The model included thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation of pyrite, elemental sulphur and covellite and also considered gas/liquid mixing, oxygen solubility as a function of temperature and solution composition, ferrous to ferric oxidation, gangue reactions with acid and precipitation/re-dissolution of basic ferric sulphate and alunite.

The hardening of annealed copper during fatigue testing appears to be independent of the applied stress and to occur largely within the first 4000 cycles. Copper hardened by fatigue is more resistant to annealing than copper hardened by static means, and softens by a multistage process. Creep studies at 300°C show that copper hardened by fatigue also has greater resistance to creep than statically hardened copper. Some theoretical explanations are discussed. RECENT interest in the behavior of metals subjected to fatigue stems from observations of phenomena which could not be explained by current theories of the structure of metals. In 1953 Bullen et al.l showed that the hardening caused by fatigue at low stresses did not cause severe bending of the lattice as did hardening by static methods. This was later confirmed by Wood, 'and Broom and Ham.3 Clarebrough et al4 showed that as the stress level used in fatigue hardening was increased, bending of the lattice was introduced, eventually approaching that of metals deformed by conventional cold-working methods. The type of hardening introduced by fatigue has other interesting characteristics. Kemsley5 showed that copper fractured by fatigue at low stresses resisted annealing as compared to copper hardened an equal amount by static means. The work of Clarebrough etal, shows that the manner of energy release during annealing differs for fatigue-hardened and statically hardened metal in both magnitude and temperature range of release. In addition to hardening of the lattice, fatigue has been shown to cause softening in materials previously hardened by static methods,5 and also in age-hardened alloys.7 The superposition of a small fatigue stress on the static loading of high-temperature alloys has been shown to increase their resistance to creep.' The present work was an attempt to determine the relationship between fatigue hardening, resistance to annealing, and the creep properties of pure copper. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM The program described here was designed to answer three questions: 1) Can stress-cycle combinations well below the failure values give significant increases in hardness? 2) Does hardening, under different stress-cycle combinations, give increase resistance to annealing? And if so— 3) Does superior resistance to annealing confer superior creep properties over statically hardened material? Three-quarter hard OFHC copper was annealed in vacuo at 550°C for 1 hr to produce a strain-free material having a fine grain size and uniform hardness. (The standard deviation of the mean hardness of the annealed samples was less than + 1.9 Dpn). Annealing was performed after machining the fatigue specimens so as to avoid work-hardened surfaces. Jigs were used to avoid distortion. The fatigue properties of the annealed copper were determined using an accurately aligned Baldwin-Sonntag SF1-U machine operating at 1800 cycles per min. This limited the minimum number of cycles which could be examined to about 4000 stress reversals. Since failure resulted in specimen damage, hardness increase with number of cycles was measured by testing specimens fatigued to different fractions of the failure values. The results are shown in Fig. 1, and are superimposed on the S-N curve of the copper in Fig. 2. The resistance to annealing of fatigue-hardened material was compared to that of material hardened by uniaxial tensile straining. Specimens hardened to equal values by both methods were progressively annealed for 1 hr at temperature in vacuo. After each annealing treatment the hardness was measured using a Leitz Durimet hardness tester with a 500-g load. At least five tests were made for each hardness determination. The standard deviation for individual specimens varied from 0.26 to 1.48 hardness points. The results are shown in Figs. 3 to 5. The discontinuous nature of the annealing process has been brought out by drawing idealized curves through the data points. "As shortage in the supply of mineral commodities become more probable, there is an increasing need for reliable and comparable reserve/resource data. It is therefore necessary to standardize the traditional classification procedure by quantifying the three basic criteria in resource evaluation: economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For the portion of fairly well documented deposits and as far as their geologic parameters are concerned, geostatistical methods can considerably improve the quality of ore classification. In respect of economic feasibility and recovery, approved geostatistical methods can be introduced directly into the classification procedure. The concept of geologic assurance, however, requires a new interpretation in terms of geostatistical error spread. As the ""risk"" in estimating an ore parameter is also a function of the respective block size, it is reasonable to define not only upper limits for the risk intervals for each class of uncertainty, but also block dimensions which reflect the typical stage of planning associated with the different ore categories. An algorithm has been developed to block out areas inside a mine or a large panel which satisfies the constraints of an ore category in respect of the risk intervals of a parameter and in respect of their size. The method has been computerized and is demonstrated on a massive copper-nickel deposit.IntroductionFacing an uncertain future with respect to the demand and supply of mineral commodities, both governmental authorities and the mining industries show an increasing interest in a useful framework for the assessment and classification of the remaining mineral resources"". Printed circuit boards (PCBs) constitute a majorpart of electrical and electronic equipment containing valuable metals such as Cu, Ni, Au, Ag, Pd, Fe, Sn, Pb, etc. The concentration of base and precious metals in PCBs is observed to be several times more than those in their respective ores. Therefore, the recycling of PCBs is necessary to recover the valuable materials. However, the ultrafine particles pose a big challenge. Removal of them is suggested prior to processing by flotation. Froth flotation is observed to be a promising technique for rejecting the plastics from the comminution product. In the present work, enrichment of ground 1.0 mm PCB powder was investigated through flotation route by varying the operating variables such as frother dosage, pulp density, air flow rate and rotational speed of the impeller. The liberation studies indicate that excellent liberation of metal values is achieved from the non-metallic constituents at -1.0 mm size and below. The particulate system is quite rich in metal value with about 23% total metal content. The non-metallic constituents such as plastics are observed to possess strong hydrophobicity while the metal particles in the pulverized mass are hydrophilic in nature. Froth flotation kinetics is studied in depth with a view to facilitate high rejection of plastics and identify optimum operating conditions for the same. A number of experiments are performed to establish the influence of the operating variables on flotation performance. The conditions for achieving higher yield of the metal-rich fraction with respect to a specified grade are discussed in the light of the experimental results. It is found that the requirement of reagents is negligible which could be a very important factor from the commercial stand point. Single-stage flotation increases the metal content from 23% to over 32% with a mass yield of around 75% and over 90% recovery of metal values. 32% of the materials in the feed could be effectively rejected in the float fraction losing less than 4% metal values. The dependence of kinetics on the process variables is also discussed. It was concluded that a high rotor speed helps in efficiently rejecting the plastics. Frother should be added to help stabilize the froth and enhance the kinetics. A moderate air flow is required while pulp density must be kept low for efficient pre-concentration. It is established that the entire -1.0 mm comminution product could be treated by flotation for generating a pre-concentrate. Dynamic wetting spread factors and interfacial heat transfer coefficients were determined for aluminum droplets solidifying on copper substrates, The spread factors were determined from the droplet geometries while the heat transfer coefficients were obtained by solving inverse heat conduction problems, 1-D and 2-D heat transfer models are presented and the results they provided are compared, For the latter, a sensitivity analysis was also performed to determine the influence of thermophysical properties and boundary conditions. Experiments were alternatively carried out with three different gaseous atmospheres and the dynamic wetting spread factors were correlated to the interfacial heat transfer coefficients.

Nobody has, as yet, made a perfect machine. Therefore, when a machine is operating and functioning as it is designed to do, there is always some vibration present. This is easily and simply measurable with present-day equipment and any increase in the amount of vibration will indicate a potential failure. When an increase is noted, vibration analysis can pinpoint the cause of the potential failure and remedial action can be taken before an unscheduled shutdown is necessary or a breakdown occurs.

Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area for the past 20 years. As the original concept of uranium processing has been modified somewhat over this period, the present paper will describe the current recovery practices at the Denison mill from crushing through concentrate drying and packing . Special emphasis will be placed on the leaching, ion exchange and precipitation sections of the process, with consideration being given to the entire circuit. Descriptions will be given of equipment now being used and control strategies will be discussed.

During the mineral processing of pyrites sulphide ores of some deposits of Russia loss of gold with tailings and pyrite concentrates amounts up to 40%~90%. The problem of selective allocation of gold-bearing pyrite is crucial. There are 4 mineralogy-technological groups of pyrite determined in copper-zinc sulphide ores, based on the increase of contents of gold in pyrite. The gold associated with group 4 pyrite contents of 85% the total mass of gold found in the pyrite. The flotation behaviour of the enriched fractions of pyrite (98%), of the allocated from the ore of Gay deposit, were studied essentially in various conditions ?? and the charge of Butyl xanthogenate of potassium (ButX). Some products of selective pyrite flotation were investigated by methods of scanning electronic microscopy, energy-dispersive and X-ray spectral microanalyses, definition of specific resistance and thermoelectric moving force.

Blast engineers have been taking advantage of image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods for the past 3 decades to estimate rock size distributions. These methods utilize a wide range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of rocks in images. Rock delineation results are then converted to physical rock sizes (and percentage passing curves) by scaling the image pixels to correspond to physical measurements. The size scaling process is critical for acquiring physical measurements, but specific to the limitations of different applications. This article starts by presenting a shovel bucket-based fragmentation analysis system, where scaling is done using the known width of the shovel bucket within the image. Next, it describes methods that use pictures captured by digital cameras with scaling reference objects in the view. Finally, the article presents a method that uses three-dimensional imaging to capture images without the need for scaling reference objects. A portable device which utilizes a three-dimensional imaging method is proposed, and compared with the other methods. The proposed solution combines the generated three-dimensional points with the delineated rock boundaries in the image to reconstruct the surface, and generate accurate rock size estimates and percentage passing rock size distributions. System operation is described and its accuracy and performance are discussed for various scenarios. It is shown that since the device does not require a physical object for scaling reference, it is free from the limitations of other methods, and can be applied for automatic rock size measurement from various sources such as mining shovels, loaders, crushers, stockpiles, haul truck beds, and conveyor belts.

The chemistry involved in the microbial dissolution of iron and copper from such sulfide minerals as pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove11ite, and bornite is described. The chemical criteria used to evaluate the activity of microorganisms on these minerals were changes in pH, ferric iron produced, and oxygen consumption. In a series of experiments in which a ferrous sulfate nutrient solution was percolated over small portions of the above-mentioned copper sulfide minerals for 56 days, the iron-oxidizing bacteria Ferrobaci11us ferrooxidans and Thiobaci11us ferrooxidans were capable of bringing about the dissolution of 23.7 percent of the copper from chalcocite, 56.3 percent of the copper from cove11ite, and 29.8 percent of the copper from bornite by the microbial production of ferric sulfate which reacted with these minerals. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that pure strains of the iron-oxidizing bacteria act as catalysts to the ferrous iron being oxidized by the Oxygen of a system containing pyrite and chalcopyrite. In a series of experiments during which nutrient solution was percolated over pyrite for 70 days, the ferric iron produced by the iron-oxidizing bacteria was 112 to 120 times greater than that produced atmospherically.

The influence of microwave irradiation and ultrasonic vibration on granularity of 0.074 mm pulverized coal was investigated in this research. It is indicated in the results that the granularity of coal decreased after microwave treatment, which led to the increased in specific area of pulverized coal in combustion reaction and consequently optimized the kinetic condition of combustion reaction. Higher ultrasonic power may lead to better performance of PC in combustion. The optimum condition for ultrasonic treatment is 10 min under 350 W microwave power.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of potash from 68 mines and deposits in 12 market economy countries (MEC's) containing, at the demonstrated resource level, approximately 11.7 billion metric tons (mt) of potash in assay terms of contained K2O; K2O as used by industry as a standard of comparison for the different forms of potash. These resources include almost 190 million mt in the United States, 9.63 billion mt in Canada, approximately 430 million mt in Western Europe (France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom), 1.24 billion mt in the Middle East (Israel and Jordan) and over 220 million mt in other countries (Brazil, Chile, and the Congo). This analysis his determined that future production of potash in MEC?s will most likely continue to be from the large resources associated with producing operations in Canada. Based solely on the demonstrated resources included in this study, potash mining in the United States would decline while overseas production from MEC's can continue into the next century at near current production levels. However, timely development of new or inferred resources would offset any such decline. Producing mines in Canada have the resources to increase and maintain increased production well into the next century. For U.S. potash users, Canada is a long-term stable and secure source.

TWO summers ago I had the privilege of visiting No. 18 colliery at Glace Bay. Underground, we travelled along the haulage-way behind a powerful electric locomotive. The motor in this locomotive began to smoke badly and a carbon tetrachloride type of extinguisher was used several times during the trip. At the time, I noted a strong odour of phosgene. On my return to Sydney, I spoke to Mr. Harold Gordon, Assistant to the General Manager of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, and warned him of the danger of using this type of fire extinguisher in confined spaces, since it is a well known chemical fact that phosgene, a dangerously toxic gas, is formed by the decomposition of carbon tetrachloride. This danger does not seem to be widely recognized, so it seems advisable that a more general warning be published. Attention was first drawn to the danger by the death of two men in the United States Navy Department subsequent to breathing fumes from carbon tetrachloride used in a fire, and when an employee of the Bureau of Mines also was overcome while fighting a fire with carbon tetrachloride liquid. These accidents led to an investigation of the decomposition products of carbon tetrachloride by a group of workers in the Research Laboratory of the Pittsburgh Experimental Station, U.S. Bureau of Mines, the results of which were published in the October, 1920, number of the Journal of the .Franklin Institute (1). Their experiments were conducted by two methods. The first consisted in applying the liquids to actual fires and -to hot metal in a closed room of 1,000 feet capacity, where the gaseous products, mixed with air, could be retained and analyzed. The second method was to pass the vapour:s in air through heated tubes of iron or quartz, where the humidity of the air and the temperature could be controlled.

Energy costs are steadily increasing worldwide while the availability and quality of water are becoming contentious issues between the users (municipalities/households, agriculture, manufacturing and mining). Refractory gold ore treatment - pressure oxidation, biological oxidation and roasting (ultra-fine grinding, or UFG, will not be discussed here as this process only reduces the particle size of the feed prior to cyanidation) - requires substantially more energy and water quantity and quality are vastly different compared to the standard and simple flow sheets used for treating non-refractory ores This paper will provide an overview of the energy and water requirements for treating refractory gold ores, a topic which does not appear to have been considered previously in the literature.CITATION:Roberto, F, Snyder, J, Dodd, J and Dunne, R, 2013. Jaguar Nickel Inc. is developing the Sechol Nickel-Cobalt Laterite Project in Guatemala, Central America. Recognizing the potential advantages offered by chloride brine chemistry, Jaguar, at the facilities of Process Research ORTECH Inc, Mississauga, has developed an Atmospheric Chloride Leaching Process using a mixed chloride lixiviant to recover the nickel and cobalt, whilst leaving the majority of the iron and magnesium in the leach residue. Subsequent solution purification and mixed nickel/cobalt hydroxide product recovery is by standard precipitation methods, using recycled caustic magnesia, with a final stage of pyrohydrolysis of a portion of the concentrated magnesium chloride brine for recycling both the caustic magnesia and chloride lixiviant. The flowsheet that has been developed also offers opportunities for by-product recovery and efficient, environmentally clean process effluent management. The paper discusses some of the early leaching results in the context of strong chloride brine chemistry, with emphasis on how the controlling of water activity, hydrogen ion activity and chloride concentration permits the selective leaching of nickel and cobalt from an iron-magnesium matrix. Poor standards of electrical installation and maintenance continue to contribute to electrical related fatalities and injury risk in the mining industry. Electrical isolation has the potential to initiate major unwanted events (MUEs) and as such requires thorough analysis to demonstrate adequate management. There have been 719 incidents related to accidental contact with electricity over the past five years in the Queensland mining industry (Queensland Government DME, 2012a, 2012b) with the last fatality being recorded in 1997 (MESA, 2012).A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has developed a form of a safety case using the four-layered æCoal Mine Safety Regime (CMSR)Æ approach. The CMSR is transparent and robust as it includes full site risk assessment and special issues risk assessment to be demonstrated as part of the process.The practical application of the CMSR has been demonstrated using a longwall mining case study site, where a unique 11 kV armoured face conveyor (AFC) is in operation. The case study has involved progressive application of the requirements of each layer of the CMSR (see Figure 1) to high voltage (HV) electrical isolation related issues. The project has specifically concentrated on understanding and analysing two high priority MUEs, electric shock and unplanned movement of equipment, through Layer 1 analysis. These two MUEs are an important part of the project as they have demonstrated the steps that may be taken to satisfy the risk management processes at Layer 1 of the CMSR and have contributed to resolving issues at the other three layers of the CMSR.The analysis of HV electrical isolation has been used as an exemplar to demonstrate the CMSR process and its practical application. The CMSR is applicable to major/principal hazards management as identified by the New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.This paper provides an overview of the development of a form of safety case using the CMSR and introduces the case study application for HV electrical isolation risk management at underground coal mines focusing on the major unwanted event of electric shock.This project provides the mining industry with a documented, publicly accessible, form of safety case using the CMSR approach for the first time.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Griffiths, D, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012.
