The methods employed for the addition of uranium to steels and cast iron in the Physical Metallurgy Division are outlined. It has been found that the segregation of? uranium is a major problem in aluminum and/or silicon killed steels and that the cooling rate is important in al-lowing the segregate to settle to one area, which can subsequently be discarded. The unsegregated areas were found to be extremely low in total oxygen, acid insoluble aluminum (AizOg) and, in some cases, slightly lower in nitrogen. Uranium recoveries, based on analyses of the unsegregated areas, were quite constant, at about 45 per cent, regardless of the type of uranium master alloy used for the addition. No segregation of carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur, phosphorous, chromium or copper was observed in these steels. In commercial heats, the recoveries ranged from 7 to? 29 per cent for ladle additions to oxygen converted steel. When the steel was fully deoxidized prior to the uranium addition, recoveries ranged from 49 to 66 per cent, regardless of the steelmaking process.

No panorama atual da coqueificação há uma necessidade comum de aumentar o uso de carvão de menor qualidade, principalmente devido ao alto custo e decrescente disponibilidade de carvões coqueificáveis de primeira linha. Neste cenário, uma forma de melhorar a qualidade do coque é através do controle de tamanho de partículas de carvões e misturas. A granulometria dos carvões pode alterar sua petrografia e propriedades reológicas, podendo ser utilizada de forma benéfica. O presente trabalho é uma primeira parte de um estudo de longo prazo e tem como objetivo avaliar os efeitos de preparação de carvão em suas propriedades. Para esse fim, dois carvões coqueificáveis e uma mistura foram selecionadas e caracterizadas em diferentes faixas de tamanho de partícula. Os carvões e suas frações granulométricas foram caracterizadas por análise imediata, petrografia, fluidez Gieseler e índice de inchamento livre. Os resultados demonstraram que as frações granulométricas dos carvões apresentam diferentes propriedades (cinzas, matéria volátil, composição maceral, fluidez e FSI) de acordo com o tamanho de partícula estudado. Além disso, discutiu-se o motivo por trás das diferenças observadas.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. At present there is considerable confusion in the asbestos industry with regard to density and porosity measurements of asbestos. In order to clarify the situation, various notions of porosity and density are defined by means of simple schemes and clear symbols are proposed to denote them. An experimental procedure is then preposed and outlined, which is based upon Archimedes' principle. Experimental conditions at each stage of the method are explained clearly in order to minimize the opportunity for errors. Finally, the results of a study on the porosity and density of asbestos minerals having various characteristics are presented.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the low-temperature heat capacities of polycrystalline phases corresponding to the sulfide compounds CoSO?89' CoS1?33, and CoS2 were measured by adiabatic calorimetry within the nominal temperature range 5 to 300 K. The derived absolute entropies S298 were 10.36±O.02, 12.96±O.03, and 16.31±O.03 cal?mol-1?K-l, respectively, assuming third-law behavior. In addition, the standard enthalpy of formation 8Hf298 of CoSO?89 was determined by bromine solution calorimetry. The derived value of 8Hf298 was -50.63±2.1 kcal?mol-1, based on the 8Hf298 of Co0. This result is considerably more negative than previously published formation values based on high-temperature gas equilibrium studies.

W. Davis and M. W. von Bernewitz, was published .in 1938 and revised in 1939 (I. C. 6999R). In this paper on analytical and testing laboratories, the original text has been rewritten and expanded, and a table has been added, in which are listed laboratories prepared to offer a number of special testing services in addition to ordinary assays and chemical analyses. The arrangement of laboratories on, a geographical basis has been maintained.This circular is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein is recommended over any other,These lists were compiled from questionnaires sent to organizations whose work is connected with mineral and metallurgical testing. The response in general was very satisfactory, and the author takes this opportunity to express her appreciation to the officers of the listed laboratories for their cooperation.Acknowledgment is also made of the valuable assistance of the members of the technical staff particularly Morris Slaving/ of the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., in the preparation of the questionnaire and technical descriptions.Many mineral samples are sent to government agencies in the National Capital with the request that they be assayed or chemically analyzed. It should be emphasized that there is no place in Washington D. C. where assays and quantitative analyses are made for the public b the Federal Government.Virtually all of the States maintain a bureau of mines, a geological survey, or some similar organization, frequently at the State University, where minerals found by residents of the State will be identified free of charge. Usually, a charge is made for assays. Specific tests, as on clays, are made by some of these offices.The Federal Bureau of Mines, although it attempts to avoid duplication of services rendered by State Bureaus, is always glad to give advice as to prospective markets. It does not compete with private assayers and chemists, but with respect to samples sent to its field laboratories, it does offer to identify them as far as this can be done by inspection and simple optical and chemical tests. This examination is usually sufficient to indicate whether the material has commercial value, or at least if the expense of an assay would be warranted. Except in connection with its own technical investigations, no assays or other special tests are made by the Bureau of Mines.The Federal Geological Survey and the National Museum also make simple tests of specimens as a public service. Neither of these bureaus nor the Bureau of Mines, however, can afford to render such services on long suites of specimens submitted by mineral dealers, well drillers, or others, when such work can be done regularly by commercial concerns."

Ground support for metal, nonmetal, and coal mines was examined through fill placement with a pneumatic stower to increase extraction, reduce ground pressures, and improve general mine safety. Several pneumatically stowed stope-fill products were tested to determine the effects of specific gravity, gradation, moisture, and impact velocity on the in-place density of the stowed fill. Hydraulic sand filling has now served the mining industry for several decades but because of the low density does not always provide ample support to the hanging wall; therefore, the sill and crown pillars sometimes build up excessive stresses that are detrimental to mining. Cementation of a dense fill adjacent to a pillar to allow 100-pct extraction of the pillar, or a fill that can be placed without the use of water and where water is a detriment to rubber-tired mining equipment, was found to be a possible use of pneumatic fill. Placing of coal mine washery products into abandoned underground workings is another possibility in order to completely eliminate surface impoundments.

Gravity gold recovery has been practiced for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Gold is 19 times heavier than water although the barren rock is generally only 2.7 times heavier. Any potential gold ore needs to be characterised to assess its amenability to a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) process based on well planned and executed test work. Scale up considerations need to be considered in designing a gravity circuit. The economic impact of a gravity circuit should be justified based on the installed cost and likely benefits. Maximising gravity gold recovery results in a faster cash flow, lower operating cost per ounce and higher overall gold recoveries compared to the several weeks required to recover gold adsorbed onto carbon. The advent of centrifugal concentrators such as the Knelson and Falcon, coupled with intensive leaching of concentrates (ILR), has revolutionised gravity gold circuit designs. Considerations associated with the sizing of the centrifugal machines and the percentage of the circulating load (bleed) that should be processed is discussed in this paper. The trends with gravity circuit layout, engineering, as well as optimum dumping cycles, are important areas which require close consideration. Key aspects of these are presented in this paper. There are a number of circuit configurations to be considered, including the integration of different gravity concentrators. Other gravity process design considerations such as fewer modules, the effect of equipment size and enhancement of process efficiency using preconcentration, together with factors that affect OPEX and CAPEX are addressed. Practical considerations of maintenance, security from theft, minimisation of risk and water balance considerations are discussed using different equipment and circuit configurations. The trend towards using gravity recovery in flotation plants is also reviewed. A number of examples are cited and good design aspects highlighted.

Union Shaft fire, Virginia City, July 14, 1904; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft in part destroyed; loss estimated it $100,000; cause of fire stated as the careless throwing of a match in the rope-house. Sutro Tunnel fire, Virginia City, Jan. 27, 1909 ; 700 ft. of tunnel-timbering destroyed, and direct damage of $10,000; cause ' probably electric wires." Belcher Shaft fire, Gold Hill, Aug. 9, 1910; shaft-house destroyed, machinery ruined, and upper part of shaft damaged; damage, $25,000; no cause given. Asbestos is a generic term for industrially useful fibers recovered from exploitable deposits of the asbestiform varieties of five silicate minerals: chrysotile, anthophyllite, actinolite-tremolite, cummingtonite-grunerite, and riebeckite. Asbestos and asbestiformm fibers of some other minerals are known to be carcinogenic. Minerals crystallized in the asbestiform habit are characterized by unique properties (morphology, strength and flexibility, physical and chemical durability, and defect-free surface structures). The key to the unusual properties, and health effects, of asbestifarm fibers appears to be in their unusual surface structure. In contrast, non-asbestiform crystals of the same minerals, including the five so-called asbestos minerals do not have these properties and are not carcinogenic (1, 2).

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is sponsoring the construction and operation of a coal cleaning test facility at Homer City, Pennsylvania. The facility represents a major investment by the electric utility industry to advance the state of the art of conventional coal cleaning technology. The facility is unique in design and can process large quantities of coal in conventional flowsheet configurations, simulate full size plant conditions, and perform open and closed loop performance testing on conventional and advanced coal cleaning equipment. Computer operation will also be demonstrated. The facility objectives, initial complement, and operating plane are discussed as they relate to other coal cleaning projects at EPRI.

THE members arrived at Ticonderoga, N. Y., at noon, Tuesday, October 15th, and were received by Mr. Cyrus Butler, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements. During the afternoon the works of the American Graphite Company and the Horicon Iron Company were visited under the guidance of Mr. Butler, President of both companies, and of Mr. William Hooper, Superintendent. An excursion was then made, in carriages, to old Fort Ticonderoga, on Lake Champlain, after which the party were driven to the Rogers Rock Hotel, on Lake George. The first session of the Institute was held in the parlor of time hotel on Tuesday evening. Mr. Eckley B. Coxe, President of the Institute, opened the proceedings with the following address: I shall ask your attention, this evening, to a few reflections upon the subject of mining engineering as a profession in the United States, its past, its present, and its future, and its duties and oppor¬tunities with reference to the proper development of our great min¬eral resources. Thirty years ago, there were scarcely any mining engineers in this country, and but few in England, and there were no institutions where young men could be educated for the profession in the Eng¬lish language. France and Germany have been able for about a century to boast of mining schools of a high character, that number among their graduates such men as Humboldt, Weisbach, Rittinger, Combes, and Gruner. Of the few we then had worthy of the name of "mining engi¬neer," some had studied in the continental academies, and others were graduates in the school of practical experience, and had learned their profession in mines and smelting-works. Their work con¬sisted principally in making surveys and maps of mines and mining properties, geological reports, and analyses of ores ; but the mining engineer whom we often meet with now, who has studied chemistry, physics, mineralogy, geology, mechanics, and drawing; who is more or less familiar with machinery and its construction, and with the practical management of mines or smelting-works, and who is an expert in some one branch of his profession, would have been very difficult if not impossible to find in the United States. Physiol. 14): L3-L27, 1996.-The lung and other organs are comprised of both cellular and extracellular compartments. Interaction of these components modulates physiological function at the organ, cellular, and subcellular levels. Extracellular components in the gas-exchange region of the lung include both noncellular interstitium and basement membranes. Connective tissue elements of the interstitium in part determine ventilatory function by contributions to tissue compliance and to resistance of the diffusion barrier. The basement membrane underlies cells of both the alveolar epithelium and the capillary endothelium; basement membrane components exert biological effects on adjacent cells through receptormediated interactions. This review emphasizes current knowledge concerning the composition and biological activity of extracellular matrix in the alveolar region of the lung. Matrix synthesis and turnover are also considered. Directions for future research are suggested in the context of current knowledge of the lung and other model systems. EXTRACELLULAR MATRIXEXTRACELLULAR MATRIX is a general term that encompasses components of the basement membrane and interstitial connective tissue. The extracellular matrix has many functions. It provides structural support, compartmentalizes tissues by separating epithelium or endothelium from interstitium, and serves as a physical barrier. Both in vivo and in vitro studies show that extracellular matrices also affect cell shape and function. The matrix elicits a variety of cellular responses, including adhesion and spreading, changes in cytoskeletal organization and differentiation, formation of focal contacts and stress fibers, stimulation of proliferation and migration, induction of polarity and gene expression, alterations in metastatic activity, and outgrowth of cell processes (for review see Refs. 387, 462). Cellmatrix interactions play roles in embryonic development and organogenesis (for review see Refs. 1, 91), in wound healing (for review see Refs. 145, 327), iri metastasis (for review see Refs. 430, 431), and in angiogenesis (for review see Refs. 185, 186). The extracellular matrix is the subject of a large volume of literature. In 1994, over 1,000 articles contained extracellular matrix in the title or abstract. After a brief discussion of key aspects of extracellular matrix biology, this review will focus on the extracellular matrix of the lung."

The Gurney approach to explosive/inert material interaction was adapted to analyse the face velocity in bench blasting. The model is based on the blasthole diameter, rock and explosive density, burden, spacing, linear charge density, and the Gurney energy constant. It is validated by comparing its predictions with a set of 20 field measurements of face velocities reported by Chiappetta et al. (1983) in an iron ore mine. The Gurney model links the observed large scatter of measured face velocities to the variation of the Gurney energy constant. This in turn is linked to the variability of the gas pressure acting on the burden. These variable pressures are generated when detonation product gases migrate into the extensive and complex fracture network around and between in-row blastholes. The energy efficiency of burden movement can be derived from the model. It is shown that ~7% of the explosive’s chemical energy is available for gas expansion work on the burden; of this quantity, 36% is actually converted to burden kinetic energy. That is, less than 3% of chemical energy is ultimately expended in burden displacement and throw. The model further indicatesnthat the projection of high-velocity (say, 100 m/s) flyrock is possible only when the path of leastnresistance through the burden has an effective density far less than the host rock. An equationnis derived that identifies the combinations of burden and path density that may yield flyrock. These values are specific to a particular baseline blast design.

Iron and steel making plays a significant role in global energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The target of limiting the global warming by 2050 is extremely challenging for this energy-intensive branch of industry. In order to be responsible for its own share in cutting CO2 emissions, great advancements must be done. A brief history, present situation and different scenarios are discussed. Possibilities to decrease CO2 emissions in current processes via improved energy efficiency, alternative process routes, energy sources and recycling are examined. On-going and planned efforts and programs of steel producers and institutions, as well as trends of energy generation in the long run are reviewed and evaluated.

A bench-scale expansion tester using 71 grams of coal was developed to determine the practicability of an apparatus of this size to investigate the effect of variables such as oxidation, blending, bulk density, inerts, size consist, petrographic differences, and rate of heating on the expanding properties of coal. The value of this tester is shown by the correlation that exists between its results and those of the larger scale sole-heated oven expansion apparatus used in commercial plants. From tests on 32 coals the standard error of estimate for predicting sole-oven results from bench-scale results is ± 5.3 percentage points. A standard deviation of the difference between pairs of tests in the latter apparatus of ± 2.1 percentage points was determined for 31 samples. In the sole-heated oven test the expansion of a coal at constant pressure is directly proportional to the dry coal bulk density. Tests in the bench-scale tester show a similar relationship between expansion and bulk density. When the blending ratios of high-and low-volatile coals are varied, similar changes in expansion are observed in both the sole-heated oven and the bench-scale tester. Therefore, the effect of other variables on expansion should be similar in the latter apparatus.

THE INJURY and related employment experience of the coking industry in the United States for 1953 contained in this bulletin are presented under three general sections, as follows: (A) General injury experience: Tables 1 to 9: Contain current and comparable statistics on operating data, number, frequency, and severity of injuries, and major accident agencies involved in the cause of injuries. Data are tabulated for the industry as a whole, for each type of oven, and for the States in which coke is manufactured. (B) Selected injury experience: Tables 10 to 15: Contain comparable injury data covering 5- and 10-year periods on the number and severity of injuries and major accident agencies. (C) Historic injury experience: Tables 1.6 to 19: Contain data on the number and rates of injury occurrence and related employment statistics on the industry from the earliest records through 1953.
