Sampling errors result from heterogeneities within the lot under study. Within a rock mass in situ heterogeneity results in the geological nugget effect, which accounts for most of the natural variability. In broken rock, constitution and distribution heterogeneities are important. A major result of the constitution heterogeneity is the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) which is the smallest residual error that can be achieved. It cannot be eliminated, but can be minimised and refl ects the fact that the broken rock sampling process is never completely free of error. Together with other sampling errors, FSE contributes to the total nugget effect. The FSE for a sampling protocol can be evaluated using the so-called Gy equation. Its practical applications to low-grade gold ores have often been unsuccessful due to problems linking the FSE and minimum sampling mass and the defi nition of key parameters such as the liberation diameter. Well-designed sample protocols minimise the total sampling error and hence the nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for all sampling programs whether related to exploration and resource evaluation, metallurgical test sampling, grade control or metallurgical plant sampling. This contribution reviews the relationship between heterogeneity, FSE and nugget effect in gold deposits; and emphasises the need for FSE management throughout the mine value chain.

In addition to capital and operating costs, the accurate estimation of ore reserves is a key component to the successful outcome of any feasibility study. In recent years, there have been many project failures caused by the improper estimation of ore reserves. The accurate estimation of an ore reserve relies heavily on an understanding of the geology and the underlying assumptions unique to the estimation techniques being used. These assumptions are reviewed, and the shortcomings of the estimation techniques and their possible impact on a given project's economics are discussed. The latest developments in geostatistics in overcoming existing reserve-estimation problems are presented.

"The management of acid rock drainage( ARD) to prevent impact when tailings are disposed of in the environment requires understanding of the phenomena giving rise to acidic drainage, a rigorous evaluation of the weathering characteristics of the tailings, and the successful implementation of control measures that will be effective in the long term. This paper provides a brief theoretical background to the complex reactions taking place in mill tailings containing residual sulfide minerals which must be appreciated to enable waste characterization program to be effective in predicting the future behavior of the tailings and in designing control methods which will work. Introduction The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour (acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec (50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average millwide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al., 1987). Testing Total mill ventilation systems were evaluated at two processing operations. For both tests, the primary goal was to determine the reduction in respirable dust throughout the structure. Test site No. 1. The first evaluation was performed at a clay-crushing and screening mill in New York. The mill's base dimensions were 39.6 x 9.8 m (130 x 32 ft), giving a volumetric capacity of 4250 m3 (150,000 cu ft). The TMVS was designed to provide 12 m3/sec (25,430 cfm) of ventilation air to the mill, representing about 10 acph. This was accomplished by three 4 m3/sec (8475 cfm) roof-powered exhaustors that were evenly spaced across the roof. Three wall louvers provided inlets for make-up air at the mill's base. Two evaluations were performed at this mill. The first occurred for two days in December when outside air temperatures ranged from -12.2° to 4.4° C (10° to 40° F). Temperatures with the wind chill factor dropped as low as -34° to -40° C (-29 to -40° F) during the early morning. The second evaluation was in April when outside air temperatures ranged between 10° to 26.7° C (50° to 80° F). These two evaluations verified the effectiveness of TMVS in lowering respirable-dust concentrations throughout the mill. Gravimetric-sampler respirable-dust concentrations in December ranged from 0.22 to 2.39 mg/m3 under normal conditions, compared to 0.13 to 1.55 mg/m3 with TMVS. In April, respirable dust concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 4.84 mg/m3 under normal conditions compared to 0.21 to 2.37 mg/m3 with the system on. TMVS also increased visibility throughout the mill building. Dust reductions for gravimetric and RAM-I instruments are listed in Table 1. Each value was determined by comparing the average concentration for the entire day of testing for normal and TMVS values. The mean/standard deviation values for gravimetric and RAM-1 results were 42.5/17.6 and 37.1/16.8, respectively.

Mercury balances have been obtained for the flotation circuits at Pamour Porcupine Mines, Timmins, Ontario, and at Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation, Bathurst, New Brunswick. The mineral form of mercury in both deposits has been ascertained. At Pamour Porcupine, the mercury is approximately evenly divided among sphalerite, native silverelectrum and tetrahedrite-tennantite; at Brunswick Mining, this element is contained mostly in the sphalerite, although tetrahedrite (and possibly pyrite) also contains minor quantities.

Sorption of copper ions from aqueous solutions by dried biomass of the aquatic plant Potamogeton luscens was studied at laboratory scale. The aquatic plant was collected in water resources in Brazil, washed, dried at 60°C and ground in a bladed mixer. Sorption experiments were conducted in agitated flasks and in a packed bed column. Maximum copper removal was obtained between pH 5.0 and 6.6 when copper was present in the ionic form Cu'. Sorption followed the Langmuir isotherm with saturation attained at 35 mg/g. Free energy of sorption was found, to be of the order of -25 kJ/mol. Sorption kinetics data were better described by a second order reaction and rate constants were calculated in 0.030 1/(min.mg) for - 4.0 mm particles and 0.081 1/(min.mg) for - 0.59 mm particles. Removal of metal ions in a packed bed column showed that Potamogeton luscens biomass can be used in several sorption/dessorption cycles. After sorbent saturation, copper ions can be recovered from the loaded biomass by elution-with H2SO4, solution. Main mechanism responsible for heavy metal uptake was found to be ion exchange. Results are discussed in terms of the surface properties of the biomaterial, solution chemistry of copper ions and thermodynamics parameters.

The electrokinetic properties of MgO have been utilized to simultaneously filter suspended solids and remove trace amounts of dissolved heavy metals from synthetic mine water. Greater than 95 pct removal of metals from influent at neutral pH containing 1 to 6 mg/L of dissolved Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn can be routinely achieved by filtering through a granular bed of MgO at flow rates typical of rapid sand filtration (0.3 cm/s). Filtrate concentrations of most metals can be maintained below 0.1 mg/L for 160 bed volumes or more loading. The more mobile metals (those with larger solubility products) are more difficult to remove, and are strongly bonded to the MgO granules so that chemical stripping with chelating agent is required to clean the bed. Less mobile ions are easily removed by the filter and are effectively stripped by conventional filter backwashing. The fraction of metals recovered by chemically stripping the loaded MgO filters correlates to the zero points of charge of the metals. This process may be applicable to removal and recovery of trace amounts of heavy metals in mine drainage that is partly neutralized by liming. Also, since many of these metals are critical and strategic, the technique can be adapted not only to recycle process water from mineral and milling waste streams, but also to reclaim their metal values.

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is an excellent material choice for a broad spectrum of corrosive fluids and, in many cases, offers the best value per dollar. FRP Flanges present the greatest design challenge of all standard piping components. The theory underlying the design of flanges is very complex. In addition, due to the nature of FRP material, proper fabrication of the flanges is as critical as the design. In this review, the challenges of making FRP flanges along with the design techniques and best practices of fabrication that will lead to a high-quality flange will be discussed.

Wall control blasting practices are necessary to reduce the impact of blasting on mine faces but can also have a significant negative impact on mine productivity and operating costs. The conventional practice in deep open pit mines is to use so-called trim blasts adjacent to pit walls. To provide burden relief these trim blasts have fewer rows than full production blasts and are fired to a cleared free-face; hence they are termed æunchokedÆ. This practice leads to scheduling constraints on the pit operations and can cause ore dilution due to excessive muckpile movement. The use of such trim blasts stems from the perception that increased wall damage results from æchokedÆ blasts. These concerns are based on the unproven assumptions that blast vibration levels and explosive gas penetration increase with increased blast burden and face confinement. This paper describes work undertaken as part of a major investigation into wall control blasting at the KCGM Fimiston Mine, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It details a study to assess damage effects due to blast burden. Borehole air pressure measurements and borehole video camera inspections were done behind a series of single blastholes drilled with varying burden distances, as well as behind a dedicated trim blast and a full production blast. It was found that the measured damage effects, including visible rock cracking, dilation, and the limited extent of gas penetration behind the blastholes, did not vary significantly with burden or blast type for the cases tested. This result was in complete agreement with detailed vibration measurements conducted by Blair and Armstrong (2001) during the study, which found that vibration was independent of blast burden. As a result of these investigations, changes to the blasting practices at the mine were implemented. Dedicated trim blasts and free-face blasting have been replaced by modified production blasts and the practice of æchokingÆ blasts has been introduced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and cost savings without compromising pit wall integrity.

NOT WITHSTANDING the extremely low ebb of business activity, the nonmetallic industries have fared somewhat better than some other branches of mining. The average price level in nonmetallics, although far from satisfactory, has resisted any cataclysmic fall such as has been suffered by copper and other metals. Stocks, also, though too abundant, represent no corresponding overhang of the market, which should result, in some branches, in a more rapid recovery. Research work has continued in some industries with interesting developments.

MY first Nevada City mining reminiscence is one of seeing Capt. Thomas Mein, over 52 years ago, in the old Wyoming mill on Deer Creek about a mile below the town of Nevada City. Captain Mein was then superintendent of the Wyoming mine, where the old fashioned Cornish pump was used, as well as hurdy-gurdy water wheels for power. This mill was one of the typical, up-to-date mills of that time and consisted of stamps, fed by Chinese hand feeders, who also cobbed the ore down to a small enough size to be fed into the mortars. Stamps at that time were of light weight and crushed about one ton to one and a half tons to the stamp, the pulp going over plates, then into sluices with self-raising gates. When a sluice became full the pulp was shut off and directed into the parallel sluice, also with a self-raising gate. The concentrate thus collected in the sluice was shoveled out and carried to Cornish buddles and there cleaned up, preparatory to being sent to a local custom chlorination works.

This study focuses on the environmental characterization and assessment of long-term neutral mine drainage (CND) potential from waste rock piles at the abandoned Erdouz mine in Morocco. The study involved metallographic analysis, static tests, and column tests. Results indicate that the waste rock is not an acid mine drainage generator but produces CND, mainly with sulfates exceeding Moroccan standards. The waste rock is relatively stable and could be reused after pretreatment.

Gas dynamic phenomena, particularly instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are problems experienced in gassy, highly stressed coal, both usually the result of depth. Diff- erent mining geometries present different opportunities for seam gas to escape, starting from the virgin condition unaffected by mining and ending with the mining of the coal. The mining of the coal varies from entering a virgin seam cross-measure, heading out into virgin seam, advancing longwall faces into virgin seam and extracting developed blocks from large longwall retreating blocks to small pillars. Each method has its particular gass- iness patterns and particular stress patterns, both changing to some extent with time, and changing as mining progresses. Geological structural anomalies are the cause of gas and stress anomalies, causing in turn greater gas and stress manifestations. Pre-drainage of gas from the working seam not only degasifies the coal but causes it to shrink and so may affect stress as well as gas patterns. Unfortunately prior degasification is not all benefit, and there are some d13- advantages to its use. Also although it is possible to degasify places ahead, gassiness will return if drainage holes are shut down or sealed up and other deleterious aspects may be induced. Research should continue into the problem of instantaneous outbursts of coal and Gas.

"The Moffet-Johnston property was investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the object of determining the presence of ore reserves that might be utilized during the war emergency. Preliminary examination was made during May and Juno 1943, as a result of which the Johnston 'tunnel was cleaned out and repaired, the .mime was surveyed, and a small program of exploration was undertaken. This report describes the work performed and presents the data obtained.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts prelimi¬nary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs benefication tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.The chemical and spectrographic analyses were made at Reno, Nov., under the direction of A. C. Rico, acting engineer in charge, Rare and Precious Metals Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines. The ore-dressing tests were under the direction of Rollien R. Wells, metallurgist, at the Salt Lake City laboratories of the Bureau of Mines.The author acknowledges the cooperation and assistance of the lessee of the property, H.R. Hakes, who furnished nine reports and other information.The Moffet-Johnston property is in secs. 2 and 3, T. 3 S., R. 5 W., in the Tidal Wave mining district of Madison County, Montana.The portal of the Johnston adit is near the mouth of Bear Gulch, 9 miles northeast of Twin Bridges, Mont. It is reached by an improved dirt road that serves mining properties farther up Bear Gulch. The Moffet mine and the Mountain View shaft are now accessible from the Bear Gulch road over an access road recently completed by the U. S. Grazing Service. The Grazing Service road has also been supplemented by bulldozer trails built by the Bureau of Mines.An electric-power line extends from the Montana Power Co's substation at Twin Bridges to mines at the head of Bear Gulch and passes within 200 feet of the Johnston portal.The claims of the Moffet-Johnston property were located about 1900. A report by H. V. Winchel, consulting geologist, in 1904 indicates that most of the development on the Johnston adit was completed by that date. At the time of the Winchel report, the Moffet workings had just penetrated the first ore shoot (fig. 4)."

Scandium is an important industrial metal for which demand is projected to increase in the future. Although many Sc deposits are secondary, Sc is scavenged by clinopyroxene during fractional crystallization of primary, mafic-ultramafic magmas. Sc may thus occur in sub-economic concentrations in mafic-ultramafic intrusions. In this work, we present new data on the concentration of Sc in the Bushveld Complex (BC) of South Africa. The eastern and western limbs of the BC are considered to be largely pristine, primary magmatic deposits, whereas the northern limb shows evidence of largescale, localized crustal contamination. Samples from the primary magmatic cumulates of the eastern limb, from the mineralized Flatreef of the northern limb, and from the crustal-contaminated Footwall Assimilation Zone (FAZ) of the Flatreef were analysed for Sc. Despite the FAZ containing abundant clinopyroxene, interpreted to have recrystallized from the original cumulates in the presence of melted sedimentary rocks, no significant differences are seen in the concentration of Sc compared to other cumulate rocks of the BC containing less-abundant clinopyroxene. The concentration of Sc in the analysed samples is mainly controlled by mineralogy, with anorthosites, chromitites, and harzburgites containing under 20 ppm, and norites and pyroxenites containing 20–40 ppm. The parapyroxenites of the FAZ are less enriched in Sc than expected, suggesting that Sc may have been lost during alteration and recrystallization.

"In contrast with the well-publicized Pittsburgh coal, and the Everglades of Florida, most coal-forming swamps of Cretaceous time in western North America occupied relatively limited areas. They formed in areas of irregular subsidence, bounded by the changing levee systems of meandering streams. Coke quality is determined by the physical and chemical behaviour of the vitrain during thermal decomposition. Vitrain is at least in part a colloidal substance, originally containing large proportions of water; its formation and survival depend on maintaining a shallow cover of stagnant water up to the time of burial. Heat from swamp fires or subaerial dyhydration could destroy it or impair its quality. Observed patterns suggest that the metamorphism is almost entirely thermal, and that there is little relation to tectonic stresses, or loading. These coals had probably achieved essentially their present rank prior to deformation. Evidence of frictional heating along the thrust planes is minimal or absent. Normally, coal beds are aquifers. Oxygen carried into the subsurface becomes available and reacts with the vitrain to destroy its natural thermoplastic properties. The tolerance of oxygen without loss of thermoplasticity is inversely related to the volatile content. Significant lateral variations of coal thickness are common and sometimes occur in short distances. In deformed areas these thickness changes are more commonly due to differential tectonic stress rather than to original thicknesses of coal. Locally, coal is known to have flowed into cavities, or fractures. These principals are discussed in relation to coal deposits of western Alberta and eastern British Columbia."

A 25,500-cfm system installed at a clay processing mill provided approximately 10 air changes per hour. This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by approximately 40 pct throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 50,000 and 100,000 cfm of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 air changes per hour. Average mill-wide respirable dust reductions were 36 and 64 pct, respectively. Not only did these systems reduce respirable dust concentrations and increase visibility throughout the mills, they were also easy to install and required minimal maintenance. A total mill ventilation system provides a general purging of the mill air; the system should be viewed as a supplemental technique to assist other dust control systems in operation.

Bentonite and newly discovered deposits of sepiolite, saponite, and hectorite are now being processed and marketed from the Amargosa Valley of Nevada. All of these deposits are large. The bentonite has been known for decades and is the whitest known. The only other sepiolite deposit is in Spain. The only other commercial hectorite deposit is at Hector, California. No other saponite deposit is known. All the components except bentonite are hydrous magnesium silicates. The bentonite is mixed layer Na-Ca. All the materials have characteristics unique to their locale and type, such as high yield point for drilling muds and liquid suspending agents. The sepiolite has geothermal stability. Figure 1.

"INTRODUCTION Experience in drilling oil and gas wells has shown that the voidance of blow-outs, twist-offs, fishing jobs, loss of circulation, and heaving and caving of shale formations into the drill hole depends largely on how well the drilling-mud fluid serves its purpose. A possible method for the control of the drilling fluids may be seen from a study of the relation between the particle-size distribution and some of the important drilling-fluid properties, such as the ability to build quickly a relatively impervious mud sheath on the wall of the hole in the porous formations penetrated by the bit during drilling operations. In a wartime economy, which urgently requires conservation of steel, proper functioning of the drilling fluid is particularly important because, as Parks 4/ has stated, intelligent use of good drilling fluids makes possible drilling of wells for thousands of feet in open holes without the necessity of setting protective strings of casing to control the movement of salt water, gas, and troublesome formations into the borehole; consequently, especially in deep wells, of proper drilling fluids materially reduces the need for casing and lowers the cost of drilling and completing the wells."
