The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducts basic and applied research related to predicting, eliminating, and/or controlling rock bursts in underground hard-rock mines and coal bumps in underground coal mines. An important element in this research is the development of a reliable and efficient microseismic source location technique. This report presents the results of a Bureau study to develop and evaluate a new algorithm to locate microseismic events based on the Simplex method, a powerful linear programming technique. The technique was tested on both field data and simulated data. Microseismic event source locations obtained with this new Simplex-based algorithm were shown to have less error than those locations obtained using a least squares method. It was concluded that the Simplex approach to source location of microseismic events can be used effectively in microseismic monitoring.

At the outset may I express my sincere appreciation to the organisers of this Congress for their kind invitation to me to participate in the plenary session. May I also thank the CMMI for inviting me to be their fifth distinguished lecturer. This is a signal honour and one which is sincerely appreciated by my Group and myself. The subject of gold is a very emotive one. It conjures up different images in the minds of a wide variety of people. For many of us it is very simply the ultimate metal. In ancient times gold was sought after and treasured; it was the chosen metal for adornment and many of the best preserved artefacts of that time were hand-fashioned from gold which had been won by primitive mining techniques. Gold's rarity and its value was recognised by those who fashioned the earliest gold coins thus underlining gold's special place as a store of value.

This manual contains a step-by-step procedure for the design of ore passes for open pit mines. The manual is comprehensive and deals with all aspects including location, design, construction and operating considerations. In the construction section, all applicable raising and shaft sinking methods are considered and cost estimates and advance rates provided for each. The design process is divided into several sections - rock flow requirements, support design, dump point design and draw point design. Use of this manual provides open pit planning engineers with a means of designing and assessing the feasibility of ore passes for their operations.

IN Bolivia, mining is still the principal economic activity, as it was before and during the Spanish Colonial period. Tin, tungsten, antimony, copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, sulphur, and a little bismuth are produced. The Andes mountains are divided into two main ranges in Bolivia; the Western range marks the border with Chile and the Eastern range forms the backbone of the country; in the North it drops rather abruptly eastward, to the plains of the Beni, whereas in the South it splits and is separated from the Chaco flatlands by a series of folded mountain ranges. In general the mineral deposits are found within the Eastern range or in the hills that rise from the high plateau between the ranges - really parts of the Eastern range partly submerged by recent sediments. The mineral belt is thus over 500 miles long and about 100 miles wide and includes most of the principal centers of population and the most important means of communication. The region is mountainous and the roads are bad; furthermore labor is a serious problem, for the land is poor and the agricultural population is never far from hunger. The floating supply of miners is limited and soon exhausted in any emergency like the present.

In carbonate flotation, oleate has been used for many years as a collector in industrial scale. Compared to sulfide minerals, the flotation of carbonate minerals requires more collector consumption and has lower yield and selectivity. It has been previously shown that surfactin provides higher yields in smaller amounts than oleate in the bioflotation of calcite as one of the carbonate minerals. In this study, the usability of surfactin as a flotation collector for magnesite was investigated. For this purpose, the adsorption of surfactin on the magnesite surface was inspected with analyses such as FTIR, SEM–EDS, contact angle, and zeta potential measurements. In addition, the effect of surfactin on the surface tension of water was also revealed. The same analyses were also performed for oleate as a reference point. All flotation experiments were performed without optimizing with both collectors. FTIR results showed that the surfactin, like oleate, was chemically adsorbed on the magnesite surface. Surface tension analyses showed that the surface tension of water decreased to approximately 32 N m− 1 at 10− 4 M oleate concentration, and this value decreased to below 25 N m− 1 at the same surfactin concentration. According to contact angle measurement results, the contact angle of magnesite was 85° after the surfactin adsorption of 2 × 10− 4 M concentration, while this value remained at 46° for oleate. Finally, according to flotation experiments, high temperatures and high collector dosages are necessary for acceptable flotation recovery with oleate, yet surfactin can produce the desired result at ambient temperatures and lower collector amounts.

A flotation process was developed by the Bureau of Mines for separation of carbonate and phosphate minerals occurring in unaltered phosphate ores of the Phosphoria formation. The process involves depression of phosphate minerals with fluosilicic acid and flotation of carbonate minerals with fatty acid emulsions. In individual laboratory tests, selective removal of carbonates was achieved with phosphate recoveries ranging from 60 to 80 pct P205. In continuous-circuit testing, sizing and separate treatment of coarse and fine fractions was necessary to achieve 65-pct P205 recovery. Concentrate grade ranged from 26 to 33 pct P205. The flotation tailings containing primarily carbonate and phosphate minerals is a potential fertilizer material. When reacted with H3P04, concentrated superphosphate containing approximately 40 pct available P205 was obtained.

1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. "The iron ore mines in the Lorraine region of north-eastern France cover a surface area of approximately 3,900 km2 and involve more than 150 cities. A total extraction method was usually used during exploitation, but this technique was sometimes replaced by the room and abandoned pillar technique when it was necessary to protect surface buildings and infrastructure. Rooms and abandoned pillars were initially designed to ensure long-term mine stability. However, this aim was not always reached and numerous collapses occurred in the Lorraine iron basin, either during production or several years after closure. Several subsidence events were identified during a period of one century; the most recent event occurred in 2012. Two groups of events were identified. The first group represents events characterized by sudden surface movement, and the second group includes event characterized by progressive subsidence.Numerous studies conducted during the last decade helped improve our understanding the origin mechanism of spontaneous or progressive (slow) events. These studies led to identifying long-term potentially unstable underground zones (hazard zones), particularly deep zones located under buildings and infrastructure. The latest are currently monitored by microseismic networks. A similar high requirement level is needed for unstable zones without taking into account the kinetics of the subsidence, which is very important for safety. Thus, GEODERIS initiated this study, primarily to acquire a better understanding of the kinetics of the progressive events group and identify the main parameters that could explain why some pillars zones developed a maximum amplitude subsidence on surface within a few hours or days, while it took several weeks to months for others. In practice, the results of this study will facilitate adapting the requirement level of microseismic monitoring system to the kinetics of pillar collapse.To retrieve the real kinetics for each event, historical and sparse documentation was used. Firstly, archives research was conducted, especially testimonies and newspaper articles published during the events. This work helped to gather useful information that sometimes contained a precise description of subsidence duration. The archives research helped to classify some progressive events according to the subsidence kinetics. Secondly, a diagnostic of geotechnical and geomechanical parameters of historic events was realized, combined with a cross analysis of the data. The analysis took into account dimensions of underground workings (e.g., pillar lengths, widths, heights, introduction of a “pillar shape factor”, and stress amount). An original expression was highlighted to connect the pillar geometry to the stress state. The kinetics expression was calibrated to classify the historic events taken into account according to the kinetics of movements. The kinetic criterion was applied to predict subsidence kinetics for the potential unstable zones currently monitored by a microseismic system."

"The future of the uranium industry in Canada during the next twenty years will be very dependent on political and social issues on a world scale. Technology, as such, will tend to be of lesser importance. Nonetheless, some technical changes can be anticipated.This paper deals with milling of uranium ore, leaving further processing and nuclear power production to specialists in these fields. An attempt has been made to look at uranium production technology in Canada in relation to that in other countries, and to draw interference regarding future changes that seem probable in the Canadian context. In particular, recent advances in mill equipment are considered.The chemistry of uranium and its relatively low concentration in most ores has been responsible for a completely hydrometallurgical approach to mill processing, and this should continue. In spite of little commercial success to date, pre-concentration of lower grade ores will be researched further in order that these ores can compete with higher grade deposits in Canada.The discovery of the relatively high-grade ores of the Athabasksa region will undoubtedly influence choice of mill processes and equipment. TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

"Inrush of water is always an issue, especially for mines located in heavy rainfall areas. Nowadays, mining companies and research institutes have developed many advanced technologies for study and analysis of hydrological processes. In this paper, an advanced method is introduced, which uses the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM) data in the Geographical Information System (GIS) platform to simulate the stream distributions around two specific mines: Super Pit and Griffin coalmine in Western Australia. The impact of this approach is important because it reduces the time and economic cost by creating a high spatial resolution hydrological map in the specific areas. The study identifies the flow path of the run-off water, which helps in adopting a suitable water management plan surrounding the case study mines. The results match with the ground reality. Based on the results, the stream structure around Griffin coalmine is more complicated than that of Super Pit. The bifurcation ratio and drainage density are computed to estimate the subsoil permeability characteristics of the two mines. Recommendations have been put forward to prevent and reduce the potential risks of water accumulation around the open pit mines.Citation:Ghosh, A K, 2016. The Mt Tom Price deposit is a world-class high-grade hematite deposit in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia with an original resource of 900 Mt of almost pure hematite, averaging 63.9 wt per cent Fe. Petrological and geochemical studies at both the Southern Ridge and the North deposit at Mt Tom Price have identified three hypogene alteration zones between unmineralised BIF and high-grade iron ore: distal magnetite-siderite-stilpnomelane; intermediate hematite-magnetite-ankerite-talc-chlorite; and proximal martite-microplaty hematite-magnetite-apatite alteration zones.Fluid inclusions trapped in siderite within the distal magnetite-siderite- stilpnomelane alteration zone at the North deposit revealed primary high salinity (25.5 eq wt per cent NaCl-CaCl2) inclusions that homogenised between 107¦ and 142¦C into liquid. Fluid inclusions trapped in ankerite within ankerite-microplaty hematite veins in the intermediate hematite-ankerite-magnetite-talc-chlorite alteration zone at the North deposit revealed mostly H2O-CaCl2 pseudosecondary and secondary inclusions with salinities of 22.4 - 25.4 eq wt per cent and 22.9 - 25.9 eq wt per cent CaCl2, respectively. Pseudosecondary inclusions homogenised between 153¦ and 449¦C and secondary inclusions homogenised between 103¦ and 157¦C. Fluid inclusions trapped in apatite within talc-microplaty hematite veins in the intermediate hematite-magnetite-talc-chlorite-apatite alteration zone at Southern Ridge revealed that primary, medium salinity (7.0 - 9.0 eq wt per cent NaCl) inclusions homogenised between 181¦ and 257¦C and primary high salinity (22.8 - 25.9 eq wt per cent CaCl2) fluid inclusions homogenised between 118¦ and 257¦C into liquid. Microthermometric analysis of quartz from quartz-hematite veins from the Southern Batter Fault, Southern Ridge show a complex fluid inclusion history. Primary fluid inclusions consist of: low- and high-salinity H2O-NaCI inclusions trapped at temperatures of approximately 140¦ to 230¦C; vapour-rich inclusions of unknown compositions; and æcomplexÆ salt-rich (Ca, Mg, K and Na inclusions).Secondary inclusions consist of medium-salinity fluid inclusions trapped at temperatures of about 140¦ to 280¦C.A two-stage hydrothermal model is proposed for the formation of both the Southern Ridge and North deposits. Early 1a hypogene alteration involved the release of hydrothermal NaCl-CaCl2-rich (25.5 eq wt per cent) basinal brines (110¦ - 150¦C) from the underlying Wittenoom Formation and directed upward along normal faults and focused within the silica-rich rocks of the Dales Gorge Member, by the shales of the underlying Mt McRae Shale Member and overlying Whaleback Formation. Within the Dales Gorge Member hydrothermal basinal brines migrated laterally within large-scale folds with permeability controlled by shale bands and the NW trending dolerite dyke sets. Fluid rock reactions transformed unmineralised BIF to magnetite-siderite-iron silicate BIF, with subsequent desilification of the chert bands. Stage 1b hypogene involved an increase in temperature of the hydrothermal, CaCl2-rich saline (24 eq wt per cent) basinal brines (250¦ - 300¦C) resulting in formation of hematite-ankerite-magnetite-talc-chlorite alteration and the crystallisation of microplaty hematite. Late stage 1c hypogene alteration involved the interaction of low-temperature (~120¦C) basinal brines with the hematite-ankerite-magnetite mineral assemblage. At the Southern Ridge deposit this process was very intense (ie high fluid flux), therefore resulting in the almost total removal of ankerite and resulting in the increased porosity of the ore. Stage 2 supergene enrichment in the Tertiary resulted in the removal of residual ankerite and apatite and the weathering of the shale bands to clay.

The development of present methods of pillar extraction has evolved from the very earliest of hand mining operations which were limited in scope by venti- lation and transport considerations. Conservation and safety considerations also have led to the current shortwall operations with conventional equipment and powered supports. The shortwall methods have had significant effects on safety, costs, con- servation, flexibility, and other aspects of pillar extraction. The present stage falls short of the ideal but is some guide to prediction in what direction may lie the ideal methods for the future.

This paper presents the results of a. study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresisl-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation _ 4µ(300)² Z= kx in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, µ the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas. The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient. Or, when the zeta potential of a mineral particle is measured first in distilled water, then in a mixture of water and copper sulphate, and finally in a mixture of water, copper sulphate and xan-thate, we can calculate the zeta coefficient

ANY years ago a prospector came to a Nevada town and built himself a shack. Day after day he searched the hills for gold -but he found none. He closed his shack and hurried north, where a strike had been made. Next he tried to trap the flour gold that floats down the Snake River. He panned the black sands along the Oregon coast. He ranged over the mountains and up the gulches of far-off Alaska. At last, broken in health, six years ago he came back to his old home in Nevada. There his shack still stood-nobody wanted it. One day he started a garden in the rocky soil that he owned. His spade turned up a chunk of quartz, and in that quartz were stringers of gold. He had found a rich gold vein, running right under his own house. You gas producers who have hurried to Oklahoma, Louisiana, East Texas, South Texas, West Texas, even to California to drill wildcat holes a mile or two miles deep-why not, like the old gold prospector, have a look in your own back yard? Some of your coal seams contain 20,000,000 cu. ft. of natural gas per acre.

The pressure and flame development of the methane-air-nitrogen system was investigated in the Bureau's l2-foot-diameter sphere to define buoyancy effects and to develop relationships for predicting venting requirements. Pressure rise (?P) is defined as a function of time (t) and nitrogen dilution and is shown to deviate noticeably from the cubic law (?P = kt3), depending upon the period of combustion and the mixture composition. Corresponding flame speed (Sf) and burning velocity (Su) data are given which show that Sf is time dependent and that Na dilution has a greater effect than air dilution in inhibiting the flame propagation. The Su data agree with "accepted" values and are unique in that they are based on much larger flames than those used in other investigations. Downward propagation limits are shown to depend mainly upon buoyant forces, which can affect the burning of even stoichiometric CH4-air systems. Theoretical expressions, based on the mixture burning velocity and expansion ratio, are given for predicting the venting requirements for ignitions of hydrocarbon-air-nitrogen mixtures in spherical or cubical enclosures.

Mineral production was confined to out-put of cement and gravel. However, exploration was being conducted by the U.S.S.R. and the United Nations Development Program. Development of a domestic limestone deposit and crude oil from an offshore oilfield was underway. Benin's currency remained fixed to the French franc. The gross domestic product (GDP) was $977 million in 1981, the latest year for which information was available. 2 COMMODITY REVIEW Cement.-Construction of a cement plant with 500,000 tons per year capacity neared completion at Pobé. The operator of the plant, using locally produced limestone, was the Societe des Ciments d'Onigbolo, a joint venture between Benin and Nigeria. Nigeria was expected to utilize most of the cement produced. Equipment for the plant included a 1,600-ton-per-day, oil-fired pre-heater.

Hydraulically emplaced, classified mill sands long have been used for stope fill. Entrained water drains rapidly from this type of fill through openings between the sand grains. Slimes are removed to facilitate drainage of the water, thereby lowering dangerous hydrostatic pressures in the fill. Use of unclassified mill tailing as practiced at the Dayrock mine is a recent development and represents a fundamentally different approach to the problems of inhibiting the development of hydrostatic pressures within the stope fill. At the. Dayrock mine, mill tailing is used to form a densely packed fill of sand and slime particles relatively impervious to additional water.

The Caval Ridge Mine is an open cut coalmine and located within the Bowen Basin region in Central Queensland, and commenced mining and processing operations in 2014. A number of geotechnical challenges for managing dragline bench and lowwall stabilities have been encountered in both southern and northern pits over the years. Southern Pits contain steep seam dips of up to 15° (27 per cent) whilst the northern pits also have shears below pit floors. Geotechnical guidelines to manage the risk of dragline bench failure and lowwall instability have been developed and improved since these geotechnical challenges were identified. The dragline guidelines include dragline tub offset distances from the 60° Line (SDL) or buttressing thickness for different seam dips greater than or equal to 8°. The low wall stabilisation guideline established floor disruption widths and depths depending on seam dips and presence of floor shears to known depths of up to 3 m. As mining operations advance, lowwalls have remained stable until floor disruptions were fired, then returned to stable soon after the shot. The maximum distance of lowwall cracking with blasting has been as far back as the second spoil peak (the prestrip truck dumps construction limit). These failures need to be eliminated to allow the operational flexibility and haulage benefit of constructing the prestrip truck dumps behind the first spoil peak, while maintaining no risk to personnel or equipment. The floor shear depth was verified by collaborating with the exploration teams and taking advantage of the already planned 8-inch coal quality core holes, drilling them an extra 5–10 m past the coal seam floor and locating the shear presence. With this continuous improvement effort, no lowwall failures have occurred during floor disruption firing from the second strip after the new floor disruption depth guidance have been applied. This paper documents the processes for developing these geotechnical guidelines, operational implementation, and outcomes. Operational applications over the years confirmed that these guidelines have effectively managed the dragline bench and lowwall failure risks related with the steep seam dips and floor shears in this open cut coalmine.
