"The gently-dipping Devonian dolomite beds south of Great Slave lake in northern Canada are nearly every-where concealed by a cover of glacial drift and muskeg. Nevertheless, in 1898 or earlier, four small outcropping areas of dolomite, richly mineralized with lead and zinc sulphides, were discovered. Exploration work performed here up to the end of 1930, included intensive trenching and drilling of the showings, together with mapping and wide-spaced drilling in the surrounding region. This work proved that the discoveries are isolated pockets of mineralization much too small to be commercially valuable by themselves. No evidence of orebodies elsewhere was reported.Meanwhile, mapping by the G.S.C. in the Shield far to the east disclosed major Precambrian faults, some of which can be projected southwesterly (under a cover of Paleozoic sediments) to the vicinity of Pine Point. During the period from 1940 to 1947, consideration was given, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd., to evidence of a theoretical possibility that, although apparently dormant in Paleozoic times, these faults may have provided a structural control and a source of ore-bearing solutions in some post-Devonian period. From this, it was postulated that the breaks might have created, in the overlying dolomite, a linear array of orebodies concealed by overburden but lying in a belt of considerable length and in a position predictable within practical limits. A program of drilling designed to test and exploit this specific concept was conducted from 1948 to 1955.he drilling within the new, theoretically-defined search area resulted in the discovery of many lead-zinc ore-bodies, none of which was exposed at the surface. Some of these are large and (as indicated by 1965 production records) very rich. They are situated 1 to several miles distant from, and apparently not connected to, the earlier-known surface discoveries. The drilling also disclosed that the ore, which consists of disseminated sphalerite and galena replacements together with colloform sphalerite and coarse galena cavity fillings, occurs mainly at certain stratigraphic horizons within a large, coarsely-recrystallized dolomite barrier reef. Considerable fracturing and folding was found. It has been suggested that reef development was influenced by post-Precambrian tectonic movements associated with the old faults in the basement complex. The ore may have been deposited by solutions moving from distant sources to favourable structural and chemical environments in or related to the reef.In more recent exploration performed in the course of preparing for mining production, the rate of ore discovery within the same general geological context has been greatly accelerated by the use of new geophysical techniques and drilling equipment. Reserves of 21.5 million tons, averaging 4 per cent lead and 7.2 per cent zinc, were reported in 1965, and production from open pits at the rate of approximately 248,000 tons of concentrates per year is in progress"

Control of the environment is as old as mining. Engineers have always had to consider how best to deal with the surface, and the character of the surface environment always affects mining method in some way. However, if the relationship of the mine to the environment is old, today's approach is new. For one thing, land, air and water formerly could be viewed simply as obstacles to be overcome or resources to be utilized to win ore at the lowest possible cost. Now we have come to realize that these nonmineral components of the environment also are highly valuable. For another thing, environ- mental protection has become a public policy issue. Again, a special public interest in land and land use is old. From the firs(, the crown claimed extra rights in valuable minerals, and to this day a multitude of laws and regulations control-and tax-land use in every country. What is new is the detailed public attention bring given to waste management practices, whether these wastes be in the form of solids, liquids or gases, and regardless of where in the environment they appear. (It is convenient to lump all mining environmental problems, including hank fires and subsidence, together under the term "waste management," for in effect that is what they are.) As a result of these changes, the mining engineer must consider that lie is dealing with two productive resources the minerals and the remainder of the environment-and he must expect that lie will be judged not only on his efficiency in recovering the one but also on his effectiveness in protecting the other. Further, in seeking to protect the environment, the modern mining-environmental engineer has a dual role. First, there is the obvious task of finding better ways for industry to cope with waste-management problems in actual operations. Second, there is the less obvious but equally important task of helping formulate appropriate public policy objectives for the environment. Throughout; the section it is assumed that mining is an acceptable land use for the tracts under consideration. The question of whether mining will be permitted at all on these tracts is a further public-policy issue, ultimately to be resolved politically and thus, since it is beyond the scope of engineering, is not a subject that can be usefully discussed in a mining handbook. Finally, none of the statements in the section are predicated on the assumption that required waste-management measures will be privately profitable in the conventional sense. Indeed, the reverse is more likely to be the case-at least if accounts are kept so as to include all appreciable costs and a normal rate of return on investment in waste-disposal and reclamation equipment.',',' However, it is clear that improved waste management will be required of mining firms and that, to a considerable although undetermined degree, this expenditure is in the best long-run interest of both public and industry. The several studies that have attempted to quantify the impact of mining on the environment are admittedly rough but still provide enough information to indicate that there is a big job to be done. Power plants that utilize conventional wet flue-gas desulfurization methods produce enormous amounts of flue-gas scrubber sludge. A typical 400 MW power station that burns a high sulfur coal produces 170,000 tons of wet flue-gas scrubber sludge per year. This scrubber sludge is currently landfilled at an enormous cost to utility companies. This material could be used as a raw material for industries that use gypsum, such as the wallboard and plaster industries. However, before it can be used as feedstock for these industries, some of the impurities such as unreacted limestone and silicates must be removed from the scrubber sludge. Froth flotation has tremendous potential for separating these impurities from scrubber sludge. In order to select an optimum flotation process, it is necessary to characterize the surface properties of the major components in the scrubber sludge, which consist of calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate (limestone), and silica. In this study zeta potential measurements were used to determine the surface charge of the components in scrubber sludge, with the goal of optimizing a froth flotation process to produce a marketable gypsum product for the wallboard and plaster industries.

A compound stability diagram was constructed by the Bureau of Mines for the Zn-Fe-S-O system to show the phases that should be thermodynamically stable at various temperatures, oxygen pressures, and SO2 pressures. The diagram was demonstrated to have good qualitative value for predicting stable phases that may, in turn, be related to the recovery of zinc in the leaching phase of the electrolytic zinc process. The study showed that roasting temperature is the most Significant variable in preventing roaster formation of zinc ferrite, which is directly related to subsequent extraction of zinc in the leaching step.

MESSRS. BURT and Shockley and others have been for three years urging upon the Institute the matter of simplified spelling. The Institute endeavors to be progressive in the matter of spelling and. is in cooperation with the national body which has this in hand and which has its principal office in New York. Our spellings are changed as fast as-good usage will permit (so it seems to the Board of Directors) and the national body, which is the real representative of the simplified spelling interests, deems that the Institute is making real progress, although not quite as fast as extremists would wish. In January, 1919, Mr. Shockley sent out letter ballots which created a misconception in the minds of many members, who received the impression that the communications came from the Institute instead of from a small group of members. As a result of this propaganda 163 proposal-ballots were sent in to the Institute divided as follows: Yes ?114 No ?20 Negative letters ?9 Split ballots ?20 Total ?163 The total membership at this time was about 7200. The disgusted members would not vote.

To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the signifi¬cant coalbeds in Preston County, W. Va. It is one in a series of reports planned to determine coals suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 2 million tons of coal was produced in Preston County, W. Va. in 190, none of which was cleaned mechanically. Estimates as of January 1, 1959, indicate that more than 3 billion tons of coal remained in the county in beds 12 inches or more thick. The Bakerstown, Mahoning, Upper Freeport, and Upper Kittanning beds were selected by the Bureau of Mines for study based on current production and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were selected after study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company offi¬cials in the field, and examination of available sites. Four samples were collected from the Bakerstown and Upper Freeport beds and one each from the Mahoning and Upper Kittanning beds.

Boring of tunnels and shafts in hard rock under high stress conditions is becoming more common as mines and tunnels are developed at greater depths. Under the high stress conditions, fracturing of the often-brittle rock occurs in the walls, backs, and ahead of advancing faces of excavations. Fracturing can have a significant impact on boring activities: sidewall spalling, which affects machine gripper capacity, and fractures can also develop in the rock ahead of the face, leading to blocky rock conditions, which may have a significant effect on machine excavation. Fracturing may develop dynamically, leading to rock bursts manifesting in the form of strain bursts, which can be hazardous and destructive. In brittle rock, fracturing is commonly extensional in nature. The focus of this paper is on fracturing in the face of the excavation. Examples of such fracturing behaviour are described briefly in the paper. Numerical analyses were carried out to predict the initiation of extension fractures and their orientations ahead of excavation surfaces, and the resulting formation of rock slabs/plates, and the stability of these plates. The results should be beneficial for the evaluation of the conditions prior to, and during boring operations.

Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and re?ects in?ltrative ?uid ?ow, wall rock reaction, temperature variations, and ?uid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonationusually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knifesharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although,visually striking and scienti?cally interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations areless useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonationpattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarnor other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wall rocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gos-san in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to gar-net, to pyroxene, to massive-sul?de replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal loca-tions. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet: pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation pat-terns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is com-monly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, re?ecting particularly reducing wall rocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcicgarnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisens stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite.Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wall rocks. Gold-rich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa-Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with signi?cant zones of massive sul?des within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wall rocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and meta-somatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. Differences in oxidation state correlate well with different skarn zonation patterns, particularly garnet: pyroxene ratios and compositions, and can be used in both classi?cation of and exploration for skarn deposits

Such corrosion, termed "low-temperature hydrogen sulphide corrosion", presents a somewhat different problem from the "high-temperature hydrogen sulphide corrosion" that is encountered in refinery operation and which has been described by various-investigators of refinery corrosion.

Calgary is today the 'operation headquarters' for the great bulk of a huge exploration and development programme that now extends over a quarter of a million square miles of Canada's West. India is one of the fortunate countries that has substantial reserves of many raw materials for producing steel; however, for historical and economic reasons these resources have not been aggressively developed until recently. Production of steel on an industrial scale started in 1912, but annual output was below 1 million tons3 in 1938 and about 1,500,000 tons in 1951. Expansion of the steel industry became one of the objectives of India&apos;s economic planning after independence in 1947. The Planning Com¬mission&apos;s 1951 report emphasized the importance of steel production, but financial obstacles, emphasis on river valley projects, and priority for increased food production in the First 5-Year Plan (1951-56) did not permit large-scale expansion of steel capacity. The 1956 planned target for crude steel, only 1,650,000 tons, was actually exceeded by production of 1,737,900 tons. In the Second 5-Year Plan (1956-61), however, construction of steel plants received a high priority. Currently three new steel plants, each with an annual capacity of approximately 1 million tons of steel, are nearing completion in Rourkela, Dorgapur, and Bhilai. Simultaneously, the two privately owned steel plants and the small State-owned plant in Mysore have been enlarged and modernized. As a result, India&apos;s crude steel capacity will be about 6 million tons in 1961, almost evenly divided between Government-owned and privately owned plants. Actual production in 1960 totaled 3,254,000 tons compared with 2,434,000 tons in 1959. Assuming that the population will be 430 million and that capacity production will be achieved, the 1961 per capita steel output will be only 31 pounds compared with 200 pounds for Japan in 1959. Some Indian experts feel that development of steel-consuming industries merits greater emphasis in the Third 5-Year Plan (1961-66) than expanding existing steel-producing facilities. Nonetheless, the Third 5-Year Plan calls for a 10 million ton annual capacity by 1966 to be achieved by expanding the Government-owned plants in Bhilai, Durgapur, and Mysore, and by establishing a new integrated Government plant in Bokaro, in the State of Bihar.

"Non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT/NDE) methods have become standard tools as part of the post-construction quality assurance of drilled shaft foundations. In responding to anomalies, foundation designers, owners, and contractors face a number of choices, including: (i) acceptance of a shaft with known anomalies, (ii) further investigations of integrity (e.g., concrete coring), (iii) repair schemes, and (iv) reject and replace. To assist in selecting the best option, analyses are often performed that involve assessing the structural performance of reinforced concrete shafts that may include defective concrete or voids. Currently, the analytical tools for predicting the flexural strength and stiffness of drilled shafts with defective concrete located in discrete regions of the cross section are limited. This paper presents a robust moment-curvature analysis tool for drilled shafts based on the fiber-element discretization method. The tool allows for consideration of anomalous or defective concrete regions in the shape and location that they are believed to exist in the shaft while considering explicitly the nonlinear material behavior of the intact regions based on expected material properties. A case study is used to illustrate the practical application of the analysis to drilled shaft projects.INTRODUCTIONImperfections such as defective concrete or accidental eccentricity of reinforcing cages are an inherent part of the drilled shaft construction process that will occur occasionally even when construction best-practices are followed. Petek et al. (2002), O’Neill and Sarhan (2004), Poulos (2005), and others have described the effects that construction defects can have on the axial and lateral performance of drilled shafts. Our industry has seen rapid progress in recent years in the development and improvement of tools for detecting drilled shaft anomalies, such as gamma-gamma and crosshole-sonic logging, sonic-echo testing, thermal integrity profiling, and even visual inspection with invasive video cameras. Nonetheless, in most cases the wealth of data from these tests is used by foundation engineers to make a fairly “black or white” decision—should the defects be repaired, or should the shaft be rejected? A third option that is not typically considered is to directly analyze the section, including anomalies, and compare the reduced strength and/or ductility to the actual project demands. This option takes full advantage of the data collected during integrity testing, and may provide a justifiable means for avoiding further construction costs and delays, whether for repair or replacement."

Idaho has nearly 6 billion tons of potential sources of phosphorite, 10 to 31 percent P2O5&apos; above and within 100 feet below entry level, the largest potential of any State in the United States. In 1963 Idaho ranked third after Florida and Tennessee in total mine and marketable production of phosphate rock; Montana ranked fourth. This report describes phosphate deposits, mines, and prospects in 10 districts covering most of the Idaho phosphate field. All mine production of phosphate rock in Idaho comes from surface mines and is processed to phosphate fertilizers, phosphoric acid, and elemental phosphorus. Producing districts are Fort Hall (Gay mine), Trail Creek (Conda and Ballard mines), and Crow Creek (Georgetown Canyon mine). FMC Corp. and J. R. Simplot Co. at Pocatello have the largest elemental phosphorus and fertilizer production facilities, respectively, in the State, followed by Monsanto Co. and El Paso Natural Gas Products Co. (formerly Central Farmers Fertilizer Co.). The only other major phosphate processing plant in the State is the phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizer complex at Kellogg operated by the Bunker Hill Co. In 1963 a plant was constructed and put on line at Monsanto, Idaho, to recover vanadium from ferrophosphorus produced by electric furnace operations in the area. El Paso Natural Gas Products Co. completed construction of a fertilizer and phosphoric acid plant near Conda in 1965. There is a small fertilizer plant producing phosphate fertilizers for local consumption in Soda Springs.

In this work Thermo-Calc software was used to calculate the phase diagram of the Fe–Si system. The deduced phase diagram includes twenty fields, where three fields represent pure phases; two solid solutions and a liquid phase. There are several fields of two co-existing phases; mixed solid phases, and mixed solid with liquid phases. A set of eutectic and eutectoid points were found, where transformation reactions and temperatures were identified. The results were compared with results in the literature and good agreements with some differences were found. This study is a step to understand the phase diagram of Ca–Fe-Si system for refining metallugical grade silicon (MG-Si).

This paper investigates ore loss and dilution produced by rock movement in bench blasting. A total of four blasts, in which electronic detonators have been used, were monitored in Cobre Las Cruces Open Pit Mine (FQM Ltd) in Gerena (Sevilla, Spain). Rock motion has been obtained in 137 points of the free face and 6 points inside the block. Multiple liner regression has been applied to predict rock motion and estimate ore dilution as a function of hole coordinates, rock contacts, powder factor/hole, amount of explosive per blasthole, burden, spacing, hole length, stemming length, explosive energy, hole row, subdrilling, blast sequence, stiffness ratio, blasthole distance to free face, rock density and Young’s modulus. The model is statistically significant with a determination coefficient over 0.8. The Environmental Protection Agency&apos;s Clean Air Act? of 1970 provided the driving force for the current Magma Smelter configuration. The historical and technical perspectives of those process developments are reviewed?. Innovations in procedures and equipment have allowed compliance with the requirements of the regulating authorities?. The wet scrubbing of converter gasses and the monitoring of converter operations by a controlling foreman are two of the major contributors? to these successes. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 have posed many new concerns? for all U.S. industry, including the few (seven) primary copper smelters remaining. The synthesis and characterization of silica polyamine composites modified with a variety of sulfur containing ligands is described. The two most successful ligands in terms of sulfur in-corporation and mercury capture are ethylene sulfide and carbon disulfide. The ethylene sulfide forms either an amino mercaptane or a polysulfide upon reaction with amino groups on the composite. The carbon disulfide undoubtedly forms a dithiocarbamate functional group upon reaction of the amino group under basic conditions. Both materials posses excellent capture kinetics and capacities for mercury, Once captured, the mercury is extremely difficult to remove from the composite materials, even with concentrated acids, and they easily pass the TCLP test. The materials are compared with related thioether modified silica polyamine composites and appropriate potential applications are discussed.
