Minerals have been critical to human society from the earliest and their use has been intertwined with the development of civilization. In the Western World, the mining, processing and extractive metallurgy associated with ores was first described in detail by Agricola in the 16th century. He considered these collective activities to be the most necessary and the most profitable of professions, and wrote, "without doubt, none of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of the metals is not less ancient; in fact they are at least equal and coeval, for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. In truth, in all works of agriculture, as in the other arts, implements are used which are made from metals, or which could not be made without the use of metals; for this reason the metals are of the greatest necessity to man." Ours is still a materials-dependent society that relies heavily on minerals for raw materials. Today our dependence on minerals is exceptionally great. To meet the need for fuel and non-fuel minerals in a representative year, in the United States alone, about one billion tons of coal and 2.7 billion tons of ore are mined. These mineral products are essential for fertilizers, for construction materials, metals and alloys, for manufacturing household and industrial items, for transportation, and for the generation of electric power. It is instructive to consider the diversity of uses found in our society for a single mineral product - silver, for example. Experts believe that in the past 5000 years we have mined about a million tons, or 31.9 billion troy ounces of silver. In 1988, 133 million troy ounces of silver were used in the Unites States. Most of the silver used was for techno- logical, medicinal and industrial purposes, Table 1. X-ray films, for example, carry comparatively large amounts of silver to lessen patient's radiation exposure. Silver does not prevent tooth decay, but each year about two million troy ounces of silver is used for dental work in the United States. In small quantities it is used in medicine. No metal - not even copper conducts heat and electricity so efficiently as silver. Silver wires lace solar cells, and silver oxide batteries power hearing aids, calculators, submarines and satellites. Hardened with tungsten or molybdenum, miniature discs of silver pass current from wire to wire in cars, telephones and computers. A dish- washer timer alone may have 50 such electrical contacts, which open and close without excessive heat or friction. Silver is an important component of solar reflectors, since no other material reflects light so well or uniformly. In our personal lives, silver remains in high esteem to adorn our tables, provide precious objects and jewelry. In many parts of the world, silver in the form of coins, jewelry and bullion is used for financial independence and security against the vagaries of paper currency. In India, silver is used in its purest form as thin foils to decorate sweets and other edibles. It is obvious that this mineral product, silver, is of great value and utility in our society. Minerals and Environment The benefits of minerals do not come without problems. Much of the silver, for example, lies locked up in copper, lead-zinc or precious metal ores; to extract it creates vast quantities of waste material. On the average, in order to recover one ounce of silver about a quarter ton of ore must be mined. To meet the world's annual demand for silver, approximately 100 million tons of waste is generated every Year. The problem with silver is repeated with all minerals. Conversion of mineral ores into usable materials necessitates the generation of large quantities of waste products that create tremendous disposal problems. In addition to waste material discarded during mining, wastes may be generated during processing as gases, liquids or solids that must be subsequently converted into forms more acceptable for disposal. Associated with the handling, treatment and management of waste products are a number of environmental problems. Environmental problems are not new to the minerals industry. The Federal Bureau of Mines evaluated the prospects for using geothermal energy to generate electricity for mines in remote areas. Given the development of a geothermal resource for this purpose, the subsidiary uses of space heating and agriculture were then examined to see if other industries might be viable given a cheap source of heat energy. Sites investigated were located in three areas of Alaska: Kobuk in the northwest, Unalaska in the southwest, and Stikine River in the southeast. Each site was relatively close to mineral deposits whose prospects for development would be enhanced with cheap power.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

Elevated temperature electrical resistivity measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines on arc-melted, spin-cast, and hot-pressed columbium carbide¬carbon (CbC-C) and zirconium carbide-carbon (ZrC-C) materials up to 2,000° C. The CbC-C materials displayed electrical resistivity values ranging from 35.20 microhm cm at 23° C for hot-pressed material containing 12 wt pct carbon to 242.64 microhm cm at 1,622° C for arc-cast material containing 17.0 wt pct carbon. Electrical resistivity values ranged from 29 microhm cm at 20° C for arc-cast ZrC-C containing 16 wt pct carbon to 279 microhm cm at 1,951° C for hot-pressed ZrC-C containing 21 wt pct carbon. Data from a previous report were included to establish comparison between the electrical resistivities of the CbC-C, ZrC-C, and HfC-C systems.

Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

Samples of raw oil shale and kerogen concentrates were oxidized by alkaline potassium permanganate, air, nitric acid, oxygen, and ozone to obtain information about the chemical structure of organic kerogen in oil shale. In one test, oil shale and oil-shale products were oxidized exhaustively with alkaline potassium permanganate, and the distribution of the organic carbon in the final oxidation products was determined. Comparing results of this oxidation with those obtained from other carbonaceous materials and known compounds gave information about the structure of kerogen. Alkaline potassium permanganate oxidation also was used partly to degrade kerogen into soluble products for characterization purposes. Structures present in these degradation products were indicative of type structures originally present in the kerogen. Nitric acid, oxygen, and ozone were used also for partly degrading kerogen to soluble oxidation products. Carbon-balance oxidation tests using alkaline potassium permanganate showed that Colorado oil-shale kerogen differs from many other carbonaceous materials such as coal and kerogens from other areas. Composition of the degradation products indicated that Colorado oil-shale kerogen is predominantly cycloparaffinic and saturated heterocyclic structures with some long-chain paraffinic and aromatic structures present. The ring systems may be connected through short carbon chains or bridges containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

THIS paper will present a review of the mining operations of one of Canada's most lately established gold mining districts (1). The history of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas is interesting in view of the fact that, although they have long been the scene of a certain amount of mining activity, they remained little more than an uninhabited wilderness until 1933, since which time ten producing gold mines and mills have been established in permanent operation, eight of these having entered production since the beginning of 1937. As complete a background as possible will be given concerning the major influences having a bearing upon living and economic conditions in the mining communities. The object, here, is to show the diversity of problems which demand the attention of the operator starting up and operating a new mine in present times, and to indicate the ways in which these problems are successfully met in this district. A description of the power facilities and plant equipment will be followed by a summary of the problems encountered and methods applied in exploration and development. This is to aid in forming a background showing the circumstances which influence the mining methods and costs of the various operations. The paper will conclude with a description of the mining methods used and the costs of the operations, including summarized analyses of the stoping methods and mining conditions. The various phases of operation will be dealt with separately, in so far as this is possible, in order to present clearly the salient features. It is necessary, however, that the reader bear completely and constantly in mind the fact that in actual operations these phases arc, to a large extent, intimately related and greatly affect each other, as well as being, in turn, affected by other circumstances beyond the control of the operator. A few of these circumstances are: capital available during the development period and early stages of productive operation; strength of rock comprising the ore and its boundary walls; grade, size, shape, and location of ore-bodies; and many other natural items which must be carefully weighed in relation to the details of operation.

The milling plant of Bicroft Uranium Mines Limited has been in operation for a period of 2 years. During this time many changes, both physical and chemical, have been made in an effort to improve plant efficiency. Investigational work has been facilitated greatly by the fact that the Bicroft mill consists to a large extent of two parallel circuits; however, the number of inter-related variables is great, and it is difficult to measure, let alone control, all of them simultaneously. The Bicroft mill staff feel that much progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done and many questions still to be answered. The property of Bicroft Uranium Mines is located in Cardiff Township in the Highlands of Haliburton County, southeastern Ontario, some 140 miles northeast of the city of Toronto and 70 miles due north of Lake Ontario. The ore-bearing dikes are classed as mafic, non-segregated, syenite and granite pegmatites. Microline, microline perthite, quartz, uraninite, uranotharite, fluorite, titanite, cyrolite, calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and molybdenite as important accessories. The mill was designed for a nominal capacity of 1,000 tpd with all sections except grinding, leaching and clarification capable of 1,500 tons. Feed was entered to one mill unit on October 29, 1956 and to the second parallel line on November 13. The total feed rate was at 1,000 tpd on November 15. The first precipitate was produced on November 12. By August 1958 the average entry had been increased to 1,410 tpd without the installation of any additional major equipment. The overall recovery has been greater than 93,0 pet do several months, but a recovery of 92.5 pct appears to be most economical. Operating time for 8 months in 1958 has been 97.1 pet although all grinding mills were relined during this period.

Staurolite is one of the major contaminant minerals contained in the Tiwest Cooljarloo orebodies. Approximately 80 per cent of staurolite in mined ore, reports to the heavy mineral concentrate that is supplied to the Dry Mill. Staurolite in heavy mineral concentrate is typically five per cent by weight and has no significant effect in the Dry Mill other than to occupy equipment space, reporting as a tailing, that requires transportation and disposal back to the mine site. Staurolite is an aluminosilicate with a MohÆs hardness of 7.5. It is known to have potential as an abrasive blast agent and it is produced in substantial quantities in the USA for that purpose. Research indicated that there was potentially a market for staurolite within Australia, as a replacement for some of the lower grade abrasives as well as a material of choice. A small tonnage of staurolite product was manufactured through a simple circuit within the Dry Mill in December 1998. This was subjected to industrial scale tests by external companies specialising in sand blasting. The most significant batch of tests were conducted at the Tiwest Chandala site on plant and equipment undergoing corrosion repairs. Staurolite was tested against three other commercially available abrasives and compared very well with respect to surface profile, surface texture, coating adhesive strength and dust generation. As part of a due diligence study, free silica, radiation and heavy metals contents of spent abrasive and dust was investigated. This information was needed to seek approval from the appropriate Western Australian statutory authorities to sell staurolite as a product. Approval was received in November 1999. Tiwest has since installed a production circuit in the Dry Mill capable of producing 20 000 tpa of Staurolite.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating methods to treat waste water that contains cyanide. This report describes a new method that removes heavy metals and all forms of cyanide. In the first step, hydrogen peroxide and sodium thiosulfate are added at pH 7 to 9 in a 1:2 molar ratio to convert free and weakly complexed cyanide to nontoxic thiocyanate. Then steryldimethylbenzylammonium chloride is added to precipitate ferro-cyanide, and finally, ferric sulfate is added as a sweep floc and sequestrant for heavy metals. After the suspended solids settle, the water is polished by filtering. The water initially contained 1 to 5 mg/L Fe, 1 to 5 mg/L Cu, and 10 to 30 mg/L total cyanide; the level of each of these constituents was reduced to less than 0.02 mg/L.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. (communication to the Secretary*) :—The characteristics of Professor Home's metallurgical papers are, that he is able, from the mass of confusing evidence on the subject, to make an analysis and present hypothetical and essential principles in concrete form for consideration and discussion. I can appreciate, from the practical side of the subject, the labor of collecting and investigating the data which was essential to prepare the paper. Much of it necessarily came from material of preceding years of manufacture in which time was allowed for chemical reactions of the re-carburizer, and for the elimination of the oxidation-products before teeming the ingots. This practice gave a favorable time-element to free the metal from slag and other impurities— a requisite condition for the production of sound steel in the ingots. But, in allowing them to become cold before they were charged into the furnace, a subsequent time-element entered as a detrimental factor in the development of the pipe or shrinkage-cavities, which gave an ingot-structure deficient in soundness, at least in the upper portion. (The term slag is used in a general rather than in a strictly technical sense.) Traces of manganese sulphide are often associated with manganese silicates in the same thread or seam, and at other places they are separate and distinct. Interpretations from material thus manufactured must be made with due allowances for the methods of fabrication and the requirements of service. The only way we now have to estimate what the degree of soundness of the ingot-structure was, in the early foreign and American manufacture of steel rails, is by examination of the worn and failed material after years of service. We must remember also that the poorest material was long since consigned to the scrap-heap without any full record of its history. The rails from a given ingot cannot now be identified ; and in many

"I think that you will agree with me that we have an excellent program planned for the next three days, comprising various interesting and educational subjects by authors of prominence, which will be of keen interest to all of us in the coal industry. "The Program Committee, chairmanned by John Peperakis, has done an excellent job in securing this very splendid talent for our convention. "I would like to say a word as to the, condition of the coal industry in our part of the country as well as elsewhere. I believe we can look at it with more optimism than in the past several years, particularly in the state of Colorado, with which I am more familiar. "Annual coal production in Colorado gradually dropped from around 12 million tons during the years of World War I to as low as 8 million tons during the last war, and to less than 3 million tons in the year of 1954. We believe that it touched bottom that year, as in 1955 the state production went up again to nearly 3,400,000 tons, equivalent to an increase of 15%. As you know, the national increase in bituminous coal production for the year of 1955 was roughly 2000 over 1954. "The national increase for the first two months of 1956 over the same period of 1955 is approximately 2100. Colorado's production is running around 1000 over the comparable period of last year, and the 5 states represented by our Institute came up with a nice increase in 1955 over 1954 of 1000. "Figures on the increase so, far in 1956 for this group of states are not readily available, but I fully believe that. our industry locally, as well as nationally, is now starting out on a steady rise despite the fanfare of nuclear energy and its more glamorous competitor, solar energy. Many authorities tell us that real competition from these sources is a long way off and that the atomic energy program will consume far more coal than is displaced by nuclear power. "I do not mean to infer that we coal people are out of the woods by a long way' so far as holding and regaining markets, for our coal. The Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Laramie, Wyo., in cooperation with the University of Wyoming, has in progress chemical and refining studies of Wyoming black oils. In general, these crude oils are characterized by their high sulphur, high asphalt, and low gasoline content and are called black oils because of these properties and their color. Characteristics of the various Wyoming black crude oils, as determined by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method of analysis, have been published.4/

Investigation and uptake of filtered tailings continues to grow throughout the globe. This is driven by a wide range of site-specific considerations, which include such factors as tailings characteristics (e.g., amenability to filtration), production rates, climate, water availability, cost drivers, environmental requirements, and social factors. Despite the aforementioned technological growth, the currently available filtration technology is not able to meet the needs of many operations and projects that would otherwise adopt the technology. Experience with large-scale industrial filtration shows that vacuum belt filter systems meet the needs of many modern users, exceptions being the inability to effectively dewater tailings at altitude and/or with a fine particle size distribution: a potential fatal flaw. This paper presents a case study on the utilization of the patented Viper Filtration technology on gold tailings to overcome this challenge and shares the resultant full-scale plant design, highlighting the features designed to overcome cost and scalability deterrents. This technology is a novel mechanical process which complements the vacuum pressure in dewatering the filter cake as it travels along the belt filter. This project commenced with a pilot testing program, which successfully met the objective to rigorously test, measure and record any performance improvements achieved when engaging the Viper technology. Of the two tailings products tested, gross improvements of 4.2%w/w and 5.7%w/w were achieved when compared to the conventional vacuum belt filter operation. This pilot testing facilitated measurement of operating and design data, which forms the basis of the full-scale system design and resultant equipment supply of three vibration roller assemblies for retro-fitting on the existing vacuum belt filter.

Longwall mining systems are used to mine approximately 50 pet of the world's total underground coal production. Single entries are the predominant method of longwall development in Europe and Asia, where mining conditions are more severe than those encountered in the United States. During the 1970's and early 1980's, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. mining industry invested nearly $20 million in single-entry and related research. This report reviews the accomplishments of single-entry research in the United States and describes two U.S. single-entry field projects: the Sunnyside single-entry project in central Utah and the tunnel-boring project in northern West Virginia. Also discussed are a single-entry study conducted by North American Mining Consultants (NAMCO) and a single-entry design study conducted by Ketron, Inc. This Bureau report compares the resulting technology with European counterparts to further assess the utility and efficiency of U.S. systems.

"THE copper smelting operation of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, generates a gas flow of 350,000 c.f.m. at n.t.p. This gas stream passes to atmosphere through a 20-foot diameter by 250-foot brick stack, carrying with it an appreciable dust burden in the form of metallic oxide fumes. The flow constituents during the period 1952 and 1953 and •before gas filtration was included in the treatment scheme are shown in Table I. This paper describes the gas filtration treatment which was installed in 1957, using glass cloth media to recover this dust burden, and discusses the associated problem as its treatment for recovery of zinc and cadmium.The metallurgical details associated with the problem are illustrated by a description of the material flow sequence of the Company's hydrometallurgical zinc plant and copper smelter. In this ore processing complex, the zinc plant and copper smelter form an integrated unit within which intermediate zincrich products of each operation enter the treatment circuit of the other."

Since March 28, domestic producer prices on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot have been at 5l¢ per pound. Dealers in this same time frame have held ingot quotes at 49¢-50.5¢ per pound. COBALT: Imports from southern Africa in 1976 constituted 73 percent of total cobalt imports. Moreover, the United States is 98 percent dependent on imports of cobalt. For this reason, the Bureau of Mines is closely monitoring developments abroad to ensure an advance notice of any possibility of a shortfall in supply. Included in these imports were those from Zaire (41 percent directly from Zaire and 15 percent via Belgium-Luxembourg), Zambia (11 percent), and Botswana (6 percent). Also being closely watched are industry stocks.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of ground control considerations associated with cutter roof failure. Many of the relevant U.S. and international research studies since the late 1940's are reviewed, and summaries of recent design guides are included. Factors affecting cutter roof, such as underground stress field and rock structure around the entry, are described. Strata control techniques are also outlined. These techniques are divided into three sections: artificial support, mine structure design, and multiple-seam extraction. Other subjects covered in the report include monitoring and prediction, effect of geologic features, and mapping of adverse mining conditions. The emphasis of this report is on practical considerations; theoretical discussions are minimal.
