"The Reflux Flotation Cell (RFC) consists of an inverted fluidized bubbly bed, located above a system of parallel inclined channels. This novel arrangement enhances the hydrodynamics of flotation in a number of ways. Firstly, the free-surface of the flotation cell is enclosed via a fluidized bed distributor, ensuring uniform application of wash water to promote desliming. Secondly, foams can be variable in their stability and lack permeability. Hence this system is preferably operated in the absence of foam, instead opting for a bubbly zone of high bubble volume fraction through the use of a very high gas flux and/or wash water flux. Discharge of the product proceeds upwards through a central port of narrow cross-sectional area. Thirdly, the system of inclined channels increases the segregation between the bubbles and the water, ensuring the bubbly zone remains contained within the upper vertical zone, and the liquid flux reporting to the overflow is low. The expanded operating regime of the RFC was investigated by covering a very broad range of gas fluxes, up to 5.5 cm/s, and wash water fluxes, over 2 cm/s. Both laboratory and pilot plant performances were quantified by the recovery of hydrophobic particles and rejection of the hydrophilic particles, using model and industrial coal feeds. The new system hydrodynamics was found to offer significant advantages in flotation kinetics, desliming, and particle recovery across a broad particle size range. Bubble interfacial flux reached as high as 600 m2/m-2s-1. The upper system consists entirely of a high volume fraction of bubbles, which provides a "safety-net" to protect against the detachment of coarse particles, and a highly permeable zone for counter-current washing of the flotation product. Under relatively extreme conditions selective stripping of the product is observed, resulting in grade recovery values beyond those achievable using the tree flotation method."

The observation method is a design optimization approach for the drill and blast method in tunneling. This method includes first identifying the hazard scenarios through site investigation, formulating suitable solutions, obtaining feedback during construction, and finally using that data to optimize the design methods. This paper illustrates the application of the observational method for T-48, a railway tunnel project in the Himalayas. It is a 10.2 km long tunnel with a parallel escape tunnel and 26 cross passages. The use of observational methods in this project optimized the overall tunnel design and considerably saved the overall project cost.

Image analysis studies were performed on mill products from pilot-plant and laboratory tests that had been conducted to determine the effect of grinding media on the selective flotation of two zinc-lead-copper ores. It was found that, when the ores had been ground to the same degree of fineness with flint pebbles, ceramic pebbles or ore fragments (autogenous grinding) as with steel balls, there generally was increased sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena liberation in the flotation feeds, depending on the textures of the minerals. The increased sphalerite liberation fully accounted for the improved zinc recoveries that were obtained when steel balls were replaced by either pebbles or ore fragments. The increased chalcopyrite and galena liberation accounted for part of the changed technical efficiency of concentration, but other factors, probably changes in oxidation and reduction of iron and in consumption of oxygen, also contributed.

It had been more than a decade since this many booths were occupied at an SME Annual Meeting, but at the 2010 meeting in Phoenix, AZ 630 booths were sold to 470 vendors from the entire spectrum of the mining and minerals industry. Exhibitors such as Metso, FLSmidth, West-Tech, ABB, NIOSH, Eriez and Resource West took their usual prominent places on the exhibit floor and were joined by newcomers such as tunnel boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht AG, Frontier Kemper, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and more than 100 other first-time exhibitors. On the floor, one could find everything from a new pair of boots to a new career in the recruitment pavilion where some of the biggest companies in mining (Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining, etc..) set up shop. The following is a look at some of the companies and products that were on display at the 2010 meeting. This paper outlines briefly results of seismic measurements recorded in the vicinity of quarry blasting under practical operating conditions. The data cover field work done from January to the middle of August 1930, during which time records were made of 61 blasts in 19 quarries. Of the tests made, one was in biotite-gneiss, two in dolomite, two in a flintlike volcanic complex, three in gabbrodiorite, five in trap rock, and six in limestone. One quarry was in Alabama, two were in South Carolina, two in New York, four in Kentucky, five in Connecticut, and five in Massachusetts. Explosive charges ranged from 0.30 pound to 41,900 pounds, and the method of shooting varied from mud caps through hammer and wagon drill holes to churn drill holes and coyote tunnel shots.

This report presents the results of a Bureau of Mines study to identify clays found in several petroleum-reservoir rocks in the Tejon-Grapevine area, Kern County, Calif., and to determine the effect of water sensitivity of the clays on the permeability of the reservoir rocks. The clays in the porous rocks were examined in detail, and the clay-mineral types were identified by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and optical and dye-staining methods. Fresh-water damage to the permeability of the oil-reservoir rocks was indicated by a study of 125 core samples from productive formations. The study indicated that, although clays were generally less than 5 percent of the reservoir rocks, they swelled in water, particularly fresh water, and nearly blocked the flow channels through which oil flows to the well, effectively reducing the permeability of the formations. The average permeability of rock decreased from 1,600 millidarcys in air to 620 millidarcys in salt water and 120 millidarcys in fresh water. The dominant clays in the oil-bearing sandstones were members of the montmorillonite group. They were associated with smaller quantities of clays found to be in the mica or illite group. None of the cores appeared to contain clays of the kaolinite group. In the lower section of the J.V. sandstone indications of what appeared to be the mineral sepiolite were noted.

The United States Bureau of Mines was created by an act of Congress in 1910 as a governmental agency to work , on a national scale , toward reducing the huge annual loss of life in the production and processing of the Nation's minerals . From 1906 to 1910 , inclusive , nearly 2,500 miners lost their lives in 84 major explosion disasters , and more than 13,000 suffered fatal injuries from all causes in the coal mines of the United States . Also , conditions in the metal and nonmetal mines were proportionately hazardous during this period , and the total loss of life in all mines and quarries exceeded 3,000 annually and approximately 250,000 workers suffered serious injuries . Under these conditions it is readily understandable why Congress took notice of this " high cost of mining" , and from the investigations and hearings of the day emerged the Bureau of Mines charged with the prevention of accidents and the preservation of the health of all those engaged in the mineral industry; this has continued to be a most important part of the work of the Bureau . Throughout its existence the Bureau of Mines has had no legal authority of enforcement , except during war years , when enforcement necessary to the national security was given to it . The Bureau believes that persuasion , with factual evidence , is the proper and best way to obtain compliance with the safety suggestions made by its engineers and scientists . There is no panacea for accidents , nor will any single " approach " , instill safety consciousness in all workers , and without it accidents will occur --and occur again . To persuade men to work safely, numerous forms of appeal are required to reach the various temperaments of workers in many types of mines operating under diverse conditions .

The integrity of mine structures, such as the roofs, ribs, face and supporting pillars, is difficult to assess beyond the exposed surface. To mitigate potential rockfall hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is assessing the usefulness of Rayleigh wave dispersion analysis to detect damage and stress-relieved zones in mine structures. Classical surface wave dispersion modeling is utilized at both laboratory and field scales in damaged and undamaged material to assess the integrity of a mine pillar and roof. To more fully exploit Rayleigh wave propagation characteristics, derivation of a novel dispersion parameter was conducted using a convolutional model. The development of a suitable Rayleigh wave dispersion system based on insight derived from forward modeling is presented. The application of inverse modeling for damage and stress assessment in the mine environment is also discussed.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs for improving mine safety. Of particular interest to the Bureau are new and improved means for minimizing the hazard of fire which can be initiated by prolonged low energy electrical faults on trolley line systems. When a high energy fault occurs on a trolley line, wherein the current exceeds the magnitude normally drawn by legitimate loads, such as locomotives, then the circuit breakers at close-by power rectifier sets trip. Tripping of the breakers not only protects the equipment at the rectifier sets, but also disconnects the energy source from the fault and thereby minimizes the fire risk. However, the fault current is frequently of a level substantially below that required to trip the overload breakers. When the fault is a substantial percentage of the set level of the breakers, the energy dissipated by the fault is frequently sufficient to clear the system by rapidly burning itself clear. Such a fault is often short-lived and does not present as serious a fire risk hazard as a prolonged, much lower energy fault, wherein the energy level is too low to clear the system. The breakdown of a trolley line insulator, in which there was a 15 to 30 ampere fault to ground, would represent such a fault or illegitimate load and a substantial fire risk.

COMMENCING in 1922, each year a lecture has been presented to the Institute of Metals Division at this February meeting. The range of subjects has been very broad. Some speakers have dealt with the most advanced work in the very heart of the science of physical metallurgy. Others have stimulated our imaginations by discussing the most recent progress in related fields of science. Others have told us of the latest art, which is at any moment of greater practical importance than the latest science, of metals. I feel that this broad precedent in the choice of subjects will justify my choosing to talk about some of the prosaic details of how, during the last generation, industry has effectively organized research to accelerate progress in our own and all other fields of science and related art. A number of years ago I visited one of this country's well-known research laboratories and had the pleasure of chatting for a few minutes with its equally well-known director. Being particularly interested at the time in the organization problems connected with industrial research, I broached that subject. My host stated in effect that he didn't believe in organized research. He was, of course, resorting to a rhetorical hyperbole to point out the danger of overorganization which can so easily drift into regimentation and destroy individual initiative. Actually nearly all of us, much as we cherish our personal freedom of action, believe in organization because the history of progress in every field of human activity has been a history of men learning to work together, to cooperate, to create an efficient division of labor. We use organization to achieve this coordination. At the same time our form of organization must not stifle individual initiative or it will prove a deterrent rather than an aid to accomplishment. Research, too, must be organized for greatest achievement but especial skill and care are perhaps needed to avoid stifling the initiative of the individual workers. I have, of course, followed with keen interest and much benefit the vast amount that has been said and written on this subject in the past twenty years but I still find new stimulation in discussions with my good friends working in this field. It is my hope that this discussion may serve a like purpose. It would be ungracious not to make due acknowledgment to the many able contributors to this particular phase of human progress, but their very number and the great volume of their writing makes it impossible to trace to any one individual a particular significant and valuable idea. I shall content myself therefore with this general acknowledgment and with acknowledgment of the specific debt that every research man owes to those who have so ably kept before the public, and in particular before industrial executives, the place of research in the modern scheme of things. "Once all the hullabaloo about Finance Minister Wilson's April 27 budget died down (or was it an April 26 budget?), the pain of the budget papers began to sink in. Individuals and corporations will have to dig deeper and pay more taxes - and government will continue to dig deeper and spend more. The irony of the situation is that higher tax rates actually make flow-through shares more attractive as a tax-deferral investment - a bittersweet ""bravo"" for the mining industry.INTRODUCTIONFor the first time in Canadian history, a major budget address has taken two days to deliver. Of course, it's not a case of long-windedness, but rather a case of a hastily called press announcement on April 26 in response to a budget leak, followed by a formal budget speech on April 27.The general reaction of the business community to the budget was to the effect that the tax hikes are acceptable, but the government's failure to curb spending is less than acceptable. Mr. Wilson's reported response indicated that the government had never promised to cut spending, and that increased government spending would actually benefit the country. That age-old debate will doubtlessly continue for generations.In any event, three noteworthy components of the budget papers are:• Personal income tax rates increase effective July I, 1989;• A ""large corporations tax"" (in effect 'a corporate ""minimum tax"") is effective July I, 1989; and• Federal sales tax increases are effective from June 30, 1989, to be replaced by a national sales tax in 1991.A brief overview of these and other budget proposals follows."

With large deposits of low-grade molybdenum ore and a latent market for molybdenum, which with development might perhaps equal that for tungsten, the United States has for years made no pro- duction of molybdenum ore worthy of mention. In fact, during the decade previous to 1914, there was no output of molybdenum ore in this country except in 1905, 1906, and 1907, when a few small lots of molybdenite and wulfenite were marketed." To ascertain why this possible source of economic wealth should remain undeveloped, the United States Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation in 1914, with a view of assisting the establishment of a molybdenum industry in this country. A preliminary review of the situation showed the following conditions: Briefly there was a lack of any considerable demand for molyb- denum for the one known use that might consume any large tonnage of it, that is, for the manufacture to certain alloy steels to which molybdenum imparts properties roughly similar to those produced by tungsten. It was at once evident that the market for molybdenum in alloy steels must be developed, or that extensive new uses for the metal must be created, before the demand would be sufficient to war- rant any extensive mining of molybdenum ore. Investigation showed that one of the chief factors in retarding the development of any demand for molybdenum by the alloy-steel trade was that manufacturers who might use, or might investigate the possibilities of using, the metal were kept out of the market by the fear of not being able to obtain steady supplies. On the other hand, those who might be interested in the development of some of the extensive low-grade molybdenite or wulfenite deposits in this country were prevented from doing so by the small visible demand and the fear that any large production would glut the market. Owing to these conditions the mining of molybdenum has in the past been confined almost entirely to small-scale operations on high-grade streaks of molybdenite ore, and the methods of recovery have been limited largely to cobbing and hand picking.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health method 7703 is a portable field procedure for the analysis of workplace air filter samples for hexavalent chromium (CrVI) content immediately after the samples are collected. The field method prescribes CrVI extraction from air filter samples with an ammonium sulfate/ammonium hydroxide extraction buffer using ultrasonic extraction (UE). Strong anion-exchange solidphase extraction (SAE-SPE) is then used to separate CrVI from trivalent chromium and other interferences. Portable spectrophotometric measurement of CrVI is then conducted using the 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) method. However, it has been found that the ammonium extraction buffer does not dequately bring insoluble CrVI compounds into solution during the UE process. Thus, it was deemed necessary to modify the field method so that it would provide acceptable recoveries for insoluble CrVI compounds. To this end, a more alkaline extraction solution—sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate buffer—was investigated. The modified procedure using the highly alkaline extraction solution was demonstrated to be compatible with SAE-SPE cartridges when determining insoluble CrVI in air filter samples. It was found that the carbonate/bicarbonate buffer was equally effective for complete dissolution of both insoluble and soluble forms of CrVI. Furthermore, the modified procedure met desired performance criteria established for air sampling and analytical methods. The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

Mining at the Tuckabianna Mining Centre in the Murchison district of Western Australia ceased in 1997, after the production of 550 000 ounces of gold at an average grade of 2.5 g/t from 22 separate open pits (Tectonic Resources, 2006). Like many historic mining camps in WA, Tuckabianna was considered exhausted of gold, such that an economic project could not be sustained on the existing resources. Since 1997, three separate companies have owned the Tuckabianna leases. Each of these companies completed minor exploration and some form of mining study to determine if mining could be sustained. All three companies concluded that the remaining resources were insufficient to support an economic project. Silver Lake Resources acquired the adjacent Tuckabianna, Comet and Moyagee projects in 2007 with a combined resource base of 693 000 ounces of gold in 11 separate deposits. In September 2009, Silver Lake commenced exploration in the Murchison targeting extensions to the main resources at the three project centres and completing targeted regional exploration across the lease holding. At the same time, a detailed evaluation of all historic drill data was completed and all resources re-estimated. This has culminated in the resource base increasing to 1.5 million ounces of gold in 20 separate deposits, with two new discoveries being made. In August 2010, a mining feasibility study was commissioned. Preliminary results from the study indicate that an economic stand alone project can be sustained for a minimum of five years. The ability to bring the remaining resource from a once unloved project into production is due to a number of factors: historically high gold price, combining adjacent projects into a single operation, evaluation of all resources regardless of size and grade, and well funded exploration directed to both resource extensions and new discoveries. Using the Tuckabianna Project as an example, this paper attempts to outline the strategy Silver Lake used to define the resources to justify the capital expenditure required for production, and give a summary of some of the successes and failures made as the projects progress towards mining. Examples of where being too rigid and over exuberant have resulted in less than optimal use of expenditure are used to high-light the difficulties in exploring in mature terrains. Evaluation of the success of a company’s exploration strategy at all scales from project acquisition to target selection is critical to the success of future project development. This paper has been part of that process for Silver Lake with some interesting discussions and insights being made. It is hoped that some of the points discussed can be applied to other projects to help achieve the best outcome from the assets available to a company.

This report describes the materials flow of mercury in the United States. It examines the mining and production of mercury and the manufacturing, uses, and ultimate disposal of mercury. Materials flowcharts were prepared for 1989 and 1990. An effort was made to include estimates for all major anthropogenic sources including fossil fuel combustion, waste incineration, and nonferrous metal mining operations. Mining and mineral processing released about 100 mt/yr of mercury to the environment in both 1989 and 1990. The combustion o ii fu1s released 175 mt/yr in the same years. The manufacturing, use, and disposal of products containing mercury accounted fix the release of 1,037 mt of mercury in 1989 and 938 mt in 1990. The manufacture of chlorine and caustic soda was a major source of recycled mercury, but it was all reused within the industry. Recovery from all waste products accounted for 36% of reported consumption in 1989 and 42% in 1990. The losses from manufacturing and end use have been declining, whereas mercury emitted from combustion sources has not been strictly regulated and will likely become the largest source of mercury releases to the environment.
