"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. The Bureau of Mines surveyed unit trainloading and storage installations in the midwestern, eastern, and southeastern coalfields. Nine individual operations were studied in detail as a representative cross section of unit train operations in these areas. Of the nine operations studied, three were in Illinois, two in Kentucky, and one each in West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Information was obtained from coal producers, coal sale agencies, railroads, construction and equipment companies, and power companies.

The geologic environment of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is both inviting and challenging to drilled pier installation. The shales and clayey soil zone of the hills are favorable but the alluvial soils of the three major rivers create problems. Beginning in the early 1950's, drilled pier installation continually improved as methods were developed to meet the geologic challenge. Case histories are presented to illustrate the historical development of piers in Pittsburgh. Recent innovations reducing the groundwater problem are illustrated by a case history of a high rise building construction. Load test information for side wall shear on the cylindrical shaft area between the concrete and bedrock continues to be desired but remains generally uneconomical.

"This research was conducted to study the changes of microstructure, chemical composition and mechanical properties ofIN718 superalloy after adding aluminum to the ESR process slag. The experiments were performed in VIM and ESR furnaces. The results showed adding 1.5 percent aluminum to the slag increase lave phase in the IN718 samples from 0.34 percent in the base sample to 3.0 percent. It also indicated that the more increase of aluminum in slag cause decrease in the aluminum absorb yield in the superalloy.it is observed that increasing aluminum from 0.7 to 1.1 and then to 1.5 percent caused a decrease of absorb from 91.4 to 76.3 and 74.6 percent respectively due to increasing of aluminum oxidation. According to the results, tensile strength increased and ductility declined in the IN718 samples mainly because of rising the amount of y' volume fraction.IntroductionIN718 superalloy is an iron-nickel base superalloy with constant mechanical properties at medium at high temperatures. For the past seven years a considerable amount of time and effort has been expended by both suppliers and users in the study of Alloy 718 [ 1]. The interest in this material stems not only from the interesting metallurgy associated with the alloy, but with the large usage of the material in numerous applications In fact many people believe that the projected use of this alloy increase significantly over the next several years, The large use of Alloy 718 is the result of its performance in respect to high strength, good ductility, good repair weld ability and from its versatility of being supplied in various product forms. This superalloy is used in wide ranges of industries such as aerospace and gas turbines [2]. In the past more than 20 years many researchers did a lot of work to improve the structure stability of IN718 at high temperatures and intended to develop a new 718 type alloy to be used beyond 650 °C. One of the methods is to control and phase precipitation behavior by means of adjustment of Al, Ti and Nb contents. The other idea is to strengthen the matrix by altering the content of solid solution elements such as W and Co. The adjustment of these alloying elements can change phase precipitation behavior [3]. If detailed information dealing with phase precipitation behavior can be obtained before experimental work for alloy development, a lot of time can be saved and the development cost can also be reduced. In recent years, computer modeling based on experimental data plays an increasing role in alloy design and development. Adding Al to the Iron and Nickel increas the strength of superalloy by formation of y phase and subsequence formation of n phase. Ti in IN718 superalloy also helps the formation of MC carbides and gamma prime phase. Increasing Al/Ti and (Al + Ti)/Nb will lead to form finer particles of y'. More uniform distribution of the precipitates and enhancing stability of y' in IN718 superalloy [ 4]. Adding Al to slag of ESR process can reduce the oxide inclusions because of the strong tendency of Al to oxidation. In addition, tensile properties of IN718 superalloy improve. The most significant inclusions in IN718 superalloy are Alz03 and TiN that were found in agglomerate forms. Thermodynamic calculation results indicate that the effect of increasing Al shows a strong increase in solvus while phase solvus shows mildly decrease when Al level is less than 2%, after that it dramatically decreases [ 5]. Laves phase precipitation and the appearance of phase are occurred when Al content reaches 2%. In fact, when Al content is beyond 1.5%, phase has already precipitated in a considerable scale. Shows the fraction of increases greatly while the fraction of phase decreases remarkably with the increment of Al content. Based on thermodynamic theory, if these particles were not existed in the melt during cooling agglomeration would not accrue and the superalloy will be cleaned By adding Aluminum to the slag, the metal reacts with oxyge"

Compilation of data on materials of metallurgical interest is one of the important activities of the Berkeley Thermodynamics Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Recent renewed interest in metallurgy of vanadium renders the present compilation a timely guide for experimentation to improve present methods or to develop better methods of extractive metallurgy. Thermodynamic data for vanadium and its inorganic compounds have been critically surveyed, selected, and compiled into one convenient reference from which information can be readily obtained for evaluating heat balances, determining trends, and establishing limits of metallurgical processes. By indicating the direction of experimentation, this report enables the saving of time, effort, and expense which would otherwise be necessary for trial and error experimentation. Much of the data has been obtained experimentally at the Berkeley laboratory. Other data were collected through an extensive survey of worldwide literature through April 1965. Estimates were made when no data were avail-able. Data on the vanadium halides was sparse, and the results derived from existing data were at times divergent. Some of the selected values for the halides may need modification as more or better experimental data become available.

Subsidence events occurring above inactive room-and-pillar (R&P) mines, including abandoned mines or sealed portions of active mines, are classified as unplanned subsidence, because of their timing and distribution are unpredictable. When investigating such subsidence cases, many uncertainties exist and disputes often focused on whether the observed structural damages are caused by mine subsidence or other natural or artificial causes. However, solid evidence to identify the cause is often lacking. In order to conduct a complete and impartial investigation, thorough knowledge of subsidence theories and other ground control topics, as well as broad experience, are required.

Bendigo Mining Limited has established a modern underground gold mine and processing plant at Bendigo in central Victoria. The Bendigo goldfield produced around 22 000 000 oz of gold between 1851 and 1954. Approximately 4 000 000 oz were sourced from surface alluvial workings with the remaining 18 000 000 oz won from underground quartz reefs. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Since that time 20 km of underground development has been completed. Exploration drilling, on-reef development and bulk sampling carried out between 1999 and 2005 resulted in the estimation of a Probable Ore Reserve of 700 000 tonnes at 9.0 g/t gold for 207 000 oz of gold. These Ore Reserves were contained within four reefs located on the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines. Reef mining commenced in late 2005 from the Shywolup and Greater Garrard reefs. Material mined was stockpiled on the surface in preparation for commissioning of the process plant which commenced in mid 2006. Mining and processing were carried out between August 2006 and May 2007 during which time 176 000 tonnes were processed at an average grade of 5.4 g/t gold to produce 26 735 oz of gold. Plant feed was sourced from four reefs. This paper discusses some of the issues which were encountered with the definition and mining of these geologically variable and nuggetty reefs. This paper covers exploration techniques, grade estimation, mine geological control, mining methods, geotechnical issues and reconciliations. It will also discuss some of the lessons learnt and how these will be applied to future Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation, as well as underground operations.

[The shrinkage of coke after formation is one of the variables that affects the net expansion of the change in both industrial and test ovens. Various test results have been interpreted as indicating that cokes from certain coals shrink to a marked extent and that other cokes show very little shrinkage; out no comprehensive experimental study of the shrinkage of coke after its formation and of the factors influencing this shrinkage has come to the attention of the authors. While investigating the reactivity of cokes made by the BM-AGA method,6/ Reynolds7/ found that granular low-temperature cokes shrink considerably then reheated to higher temperatures. This shrinkage was large enough to influence the behavior of the charge (net expansion or contraction) in a coke oven to a marked extent. Since that time the Bureau of nines has investigated the shrinkage of coke different methods, all of thick had one common objective - the elimination of the effect of other factors, such as swelling in the plastic range, which could either partly or completely mask the shrinkage of the coke. Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

"Steel slag has been stockpiled in many steel mills due to its poor performance in various construction related applications. Free lime in steel slag has been considered as a major barrier for its utilizations. Composite of steel slag and powders of granulated blast furnace slag have been found an excellent cementitious material for concrete. Portland cement is not required in this kind of concrete. Concretes with various amounts of steel slag and powders of granulated blast furnace slag additions have been investigated. Physical and chemical properties of the products were examined. High performance concrete can be obtained. Field testing of the concrete products was conducted for various applications, including buildings and pavements, and the results demonstrated the soundness of the concrete. Drill cores of field tested concrete, with ages up to 26 years, were examined for the microstructures under SEM.IntroductionIn the steel industry, a major source of the solid waste is steel slag. Steel slag has poor stability in construction applications. This is a major reason that only a small amount of steel slag has been utilized. Some of the reported applications include the land filling/creation in the sea, road base materials, soil treatment for acid neutralization and micronutrients supply, and sintering aid in the sintering plant of the steel industry [1].To solve the stability problem for using steel slag as construction materials, the common approach is to find a method capable of depressing or eliminating the expansion of steel slag. Free lime in steel slag is the major component that causes the expansion. Aging and hydration pretreatment of free lime in steel slag are the well known methods for increasing the steel slag stability. However, there has been limited success on these approaches due to that a large portion of free lime is locked in the grains during the pretreatment process."

To promote the safety and health of U.S. mineworkers, researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are currently involved in gathering additional field data from the nation’s underground coal mines. The purpose of this field study was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include a thick parting in the coal seam. To accomplish this, three arrays of field instrumentation were installed in the wraparound bleeder of a room-and-pillar panel at the Maple Eagle mine located in southern West Virginia. Borehole pressure cells (BPCs) were used to monitor the change in pressure in pillars located adjacent to the gob. Roof extensometers were installed to measure roof sag at various horizons in the immediate roof, while rib extensometers were installed to measure displacement of the in-seam parting as mining progressed. Additionally, visual observations and manual measurements were taken during subsequent site visits. The repeatability of results, important from a scientific perspective, was accomplished by successfully obtaining field measurements from two nearly identical instrumentation sites. The data collected indicated that the front abutment extent at the edge of the panel was approximately 200 ft, corresponding to a distance of 9– 10 times the square root of the depth. Yielding of the slabbed pillar began when the pillar line was approximately 290 ft outby the instrumentation sites. This was followed by load shedding onto the abutments and the measurement of small amounts of roof sag in the No. 1 entry. Instrumentation data, as presented in this paper, can be used to better understand stress redistribution, pillar performance, and roof/rib displacements. Additionally, this data is suitable for assisting in the calibration of numerical models. Insight gained from applying these models can be used to make better engineering-based judgments for conditions that could potentially be encountered in the future.

Mineral deposits of western Utah and eastern and central Nevada have produced in excess of $8,500,000,000 since 1871. Through 1965, Bingham Canyon had produced over $4,600,000,000 and seven other camps over $100,000,000 each, principally from base metals. In addition, they yield iron and uranium ores; contain the world's largest beryllium reserves; and have produced the United States' most important gold discovery in 25 years. The area is famous for its silver production and its bonanza-type precious metal deposits, but such production has become unimportant. The area's greatest producers of metallic wealth are base-metal deposits in limestones and porphyry-type copper ores. In contrast to silver's decline, gold production has been rising-the result of by-product operations at Bingham Canyon. The area also contains gold deposits in which the gold is so finely disseminated it is not recoverable by panning. The area's gold ores frequently are associated with realgar, cinnabar, and carbon. The ore deposits generally are attributed to Tertiary intrusives,* but, at Mountain City, they may be related to Paleozoic volcanism. Mountain City has yielded rich chalcocite from quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite bodies in siliceous sediments. Regional stratigraphy and structure are difficult to interpret, 69 per cent of the area being obscured by alluvium or volcanics. In general, central Nevada consists of chert, shale, silty sandstones, lavas, and pyroclastics; eastern Nevada and western Utah of many alternations of limestone, shale, and sandstone. Central Nevada has been structurally active since late Devonian. Although granitic stocks may have intruded eastern Nevada and western Utah prior to the Cretaceous, these areas remained quite stable until affected by the Laramide Revolution. Precambrian exposures, occupying 3 per cent of the area, have not been important hosts. However, the question is raised as to whether Precambrian carbonates, properly situated with respect to invading mineralizers, might yet prove to be important. This paper describes 16 precious metal camps, 6 limestone replacement districts, 2 silver-base metal vein deposits, and 9 miscellaneous types and discusses briefly the 11 * Some ores, as at Ely, are associated with intrusives of. Cretaceous age. major camps that are described in detail in this Volume.

"Ventilation is one of the most important features of coal mining, and if a mine is exceptionally gassy it is often difficult to ventilate it in such a way as to make it safe. The general system of splitting the main air current so that two, three, or more sets of room entries are ventilated by the same current of air does not provide a safe method if non-permissible electrical equipment, such as cable-reel, crab-reel, or trolley locomotives are used on gathering haulage, or if open-type hoist or pump motors are used. The problem has been greatly simplified at the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. at Crucible, Pennsylvania.The system is not only applicable to the room-and-pillar method of mining, but it may be adopted for any panel system of mining. There also appears to be a definite application in mechanized mining, where the rapid extraction often results in inadequate attention to ventilation and where the gassiness of the section generally increases because, as compared to hand loading, the methane has less time to drain off. Markets as used 1n this report are divided into two components for individual analysis--(1) supplier markets which include regional Frasch and byproduct sulfur producers and (2) consumer markets which include processors and manufacturers requiring sulfur in their operations. T HE position of each hole of any series of holes was carefully located by the surveyor, plotted in plan and elevation, and numbers assigned to them. The second series was staggered halfway between the first and so on for each succeeding series. Two and a, half to three months was frequently required to grout a series of holes calculated to insure safety for sinking a distance of 10 meters or say 33 ft. Naturally the initial operation called for drilling and grouting two series of holes but thereafter each sinking campaign required only one series of holes as shown in Fig. 8. The pump handling about 75 gal. per minute corresponds to 46 tons of grout or 6 tons cement delivered as a fair over-all average for the 24 hours. Thus 600 to 800 tons of cement was used for a single section of 33 ft. depth of shaft. One campaign used nearly 1100 tons of cement. Some holes were effectually sealed with as low as 30 tons, while many required 60, and some 80 to 90 tons.

The post-World War II expansion of the Soviet petroleum industry has established the U.S.S.R. as a major oil-producing nation and has led to Russian reentry into the international petroleum trade. The rapid growth of Soviet petroleum production will allow the U.S.S.R. to displace Venezuela as the world's second largest oil-producer in 1960 and to narrow further the gap between Soviet and U.S. crude-oil production. U.S.S.R. crude oil output was only a tenth of U.S. production in 1946, but it will be more than a third at the end of 1960 and more than half in 1965. The Soviet Seven-Year Plan (1959-65) for oil provides for substantial increases in petroleum production, refining, storage, and distribution facilities. Crude oil production and primary distillation capacity are to double, considerable storage capacity is planned, and pipelines for crude oil and petroleum products are to increase threefold. According to the Soviets, the initial phases of this plan (1959 and 1960) have been completed successfully. However, this progress has been achieved with difficulty.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is critical to the operation of coal and diamond beneficiation plants. It is also utilised in iron ore, manganese, chromite and andalusite beneficiation as well as pre-concentration for platinum-bearing UG2 ore. Gravity concentration plays an important role in the processing of diamonds, coal, gold, platinum, titanium minerals, zircon, chromite, iron ore and manganese. The DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and technology in South Africa conference will focus on the operation of DMS and Gravity Concentration circuits in the South African Mining Industry. The current status of the technologies and equipment employed will be presented as well as future developments. The conference was set up to showcase South African DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and provide a forum where operators, technology and equipment suppliers can engage in knowledge sharing. The papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including descriptions of operations, optimisation projects, new capital projects, equipment applications, process monitoring and process selection. Most commodities and unit processes associated with DMS and Gravity Concentration are covered. The conference venue was selected to be the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria. The CSIR has contributed to DMS research in South Africa and it is located not far from many coal, diamond, gold, platinum and chrome mines that extensively utilise DMS and Gravity Concentration in their beneficiation plants. I believe that the papers and presentations submitted for this conference will provide a valuable future reference for DMS and Gravity Concentration, thus making the work of all the contributors to this conference highly rewarding and worthwhile.

"The Compound Water Cyclone is a concentrator for the wet processing, in bulk, of finely divided materials such as slack coal, fine ores and mineral sands. It was originally developed by the Fuels and Mining Practice Division of the Mines Branch, Department of Mmes and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, for the cleaning of friable slack coals and slurries.Since its introduction in the coal industry in 1962, its application to other materials has also been studied, with special emphasis on simplicity of operation and low over-all cost per ton of finished product .In this paper, a description is given of commercial two-stage units presently available for the processing of granular materials, including wastes a1:1d other low-grade products. A pneumatic control system is used for operating the cyclone under back pressure .and for automatic cut-point adjustment. An account is given of results obtained on coal mineral sands and ores in the Wes tern Regional Laboratory of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. Results of several industrial applications are discussed."
