Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. The conduct of work at elevated air pressures , such as in caissons and in tunnel - driving in subaqueous strata , poses safety problems not encountered in mining and tunneling operations at ordinary atmospheric pressure . This publication discusses some of the problems involved and presents information on the following subjects : ( 1 ) Physiological effects of gases at elevated pressure . ( 2 ) Use of respiratory protective equipment in rescue or recovery operations in event of fire or other emergency in pressurized tunnels . ( 3 ) Effect of elevated pressure on performance of some gasdetecting instruments ; interpretation of the results . Various types of respiratory protective devices are discussed in relation to their possible use at elevated pressures , especially the 2 - hour , selfcontained , recirculating - oxygen - breathing apparatus , which has had wide use in the United States during rescue and recovery work in the mining industry . This presentation covers the results of laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines Mineral Dressing Section, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., on alluvial sands from Dismal Swamp, Bear Valley, and Cascade, Idaho. The search for radioactive minerals has led to the reexamination of alluvial deposits; in the process of this reappraisal the frequent presence of minerals bearing columbium and/or tantalum was toted. Because of increased demand for these metals by the defense industries and because these industries depend upon foreign sources for their supply the domestic alluvial black sands are being considered, as a possible domestic source. However, utilization of these alluvial deposits depends upon development of methods of concentrating these valuable minerals. The primary objective of the test work was the study of the effect of attrition scrubbing, sizing, magnetic, electrostatic, and gravity separa¬tion as methods for concentrating and recovering the columbium and tantalum-bearing minerals, samarskite, euxenite, ilmenorutile, and columbite.

To reduce U.S. dependence on imports of titanium, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of titanium from perovskite (CaTi03). Domestic perovskite deposits represent a significant, but untapped, titanium resource. An acid sulfation method was developed that will extract about 97 pct of the titanium and the columbium and 70 to 90 pct of the rare-earth byproducts from perovskite concentrates. A flow-sheet for recovering titanium as pigment-grade titanium dioxide (Ti02) is discussed. Test work performed in developing each unit operation is described. The first three unit operations have been demonstrated using laboratory-scale continuous methods of operation: acid sulfation of perovskite concentrates, leaching sulfation residue to dissolve metal values, and precipitation of titanium oxysulfate monohydrate (TiOS04?HP) from the resulting leach flltrate. Batch testing of other unit operations was performed: TiOS04?H20 redissolution and iron reduction, precipitation of Ti02 by hydrolysis, and regenerating recoverable acid with rare-earth byproduct recovery. Cost evaluation results are provided, indicating that processing perovskite concentrates by acid sulfation may be an economically viable means of producing Ti02.

1. INTRODUCTION. THE general impression regarding the preparation of merchantable anthracite is that it is confined to a colossal, grimy structure, called a "coal-breaker." This name is misnomer; for the desired result is not to break the coal, but to prevent its being broken. Preparation may be said to begin at the face of the chamber, with the mining and loading of the coal. Local conditions vary, not only in the same field or basin, but also in the same mine, so that there is no fixed empirical rule governing the method of blasting or cutting coal. Tests should be made, when possible, to determine the explosive, or the mechanical coal-cutter, which will produce the largest percentage of what are locally known as " lump " and " prepared sizes " of anthracite. The prepared sizes are those mostly consumed for domestic purposes. All other sizes might be called by-products of the anthracite industry; for they are not especially desirable, being the degradation resulting from the mining and handling of a brittle or laminated material. Being low in volatile combustible matter, anthracite burns most successfully when nearly of a uniform size, permitting the easy passage of air through the voids. This accounts for the large number of sizes into which the coal is separated. Table I. gives the various sizes, the diameter of ring over and through which each size is made, and the usual purpose for which it is employed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to provide technical information needed to devise waste management plans for the processing of manganese nodules. Studies included summary descriptions of Pacific manganese nodules, process options and flowsheets, methods for characterizing nodules and their tailings, and results of analyses of laboratory and pilot-plant generated tailings. This information is the result of a cooperative research effort of the Bureau of Mines and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with NOAA providing funding and the Bureau conducting the research. A summary of the extensive literature review is provided for manganese nodule mineralogy, chemistry, processing techniques, and methods of analyses. Characterizations and analyses of laboratory-generated tailings and slags are given, as well as the results of the leaching studies on these waste materials. Leachability was determined by three standard leachate tests- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test, the American Society for Testing and Materials shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-EPA seawater elutriant test. While the wastes generated in the laboratory may not be entirely representative of those to be generated in full-scale plants, results of these studies provide a positive indication that commercial recovery of cobalt, copper, manganese, and nickel from manganese nodules would be environmentally acceptable.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to measure the amplitude and shape of the strain pulse and the size of the crushed zone produced in a granite by different explosives and to determine how these quantities are related to the detonation properties of the explosives. The reflection theory of rock breakage has shown that the amplitude and shape of the strain pulse incident at a free surface determine the fragmentation and volume of rock broken. Determination of the properties of an explosive that control the characteristics of the strain pulse produced in the rock will help in evaluating explosives for use in blasting. The investigation showed the different explosives produced a twofold variation in the amplitude of the strain pulse but little variation in the shape of the pulse. The explosives also produced a twofold variation in the volume of the crushed zone, but differences among the explosives were more accurately determined by strain-amplitude measurements than by crushed-zone measurements. The peak amplitude of the strain pulse and the volume of the crushed zone correlated with the calculated detonation pressure of the explosive.

"Mining is an inherently risky business. Over the years, major mine disasters have resulted in the deaths and injuries of thousands of miners in the United States. These disasters also resulted in innovations in approaches to mine design, operations and the training of miners and mine rescue teams. The U.S. Congress responded to these disasters with new laws designed to create mandatory safety and health standards as a means to eliminate fatal accidents; to reduce the frequency and severity of nonfatal accidents; to minimize health hazards and to promote improved safety and health conditions in the nation’s mines.Following a mine emergency preparedness and response holistic gap analysis in 2012, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) identified the need for the development of risk and readiness assessment models for MSHA and the mining industry. MSHA’s objective was to evolve existing theoretical concepts for risk and readiness assessment into simplified tools that can be applied by the mining industry for use at operational levels. In 2012, MSHA hired ABS Group, a recognized industry leader in safety risk management and a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Bureau of Shipping, to develop self-assessment models to help meet this objective.In September 2012, MSHA chartered a project to supply the coal mining industry with a pro-active toolset for mine operators to:1. Self-assess the risks associated with underground coal mining operations in order to prevent major mine emergencies.2. Assess the preparedness of mine operators to respond to an emergency.3. Measure the readiness of mine rescue teams and responsible persons to execute emergency plans.MSHA’s objective was to evolve existing theoretical concepts for risk and readiness assessment into simplified tools that can be applied by the coal mining industry for use at operational levels."

"INTRODUCTION The limited domestic demands for lithium salts and metal before the war were met readily by the use of minerals particularly lepidolite (lithium mica) and amblygonite (a lithium phosphate), from which lithium can be recovered relatively easily. New wartime uses, however, created such a demand that it became necessary to turn to spodumene (a lithium feldspar) as the principal source of supply. Although very large deposits of spodumene occur in South Dakota and in North Carolina, it much more difficult to extract lithium from spodumene than from lepidolite or amblygonite.During the spring and summer of 1942 a study was made in Salt Lake City laboratory of the Bureau of Mines on the recovery of lithium from spodumede. Preliminary tests were made on two processes - roasting with potassium sulfate 4/ 5/ and roasting with calcium chloride and calcium carbonate 6/ -,which appeared to be the most promising of the various processes that had been proposed. By roasting spodumene with approximately its own weight of potassium sulfate at 1,050º C. and leaching the product with water, about 70 percent of the lithium could be extracted. Consumption of the relatively expensive potassium sulfate, however, was high; much of the potassium was found in the insoluble leach residue, end large amounts were lost by volatilization and dusting. By roasting the spodumene with calcium chloride and calcium carbonate, nearly 90 percent of the lithium was chloridized temperatures of 850° to 1,050° C. Much of the lithium could be extracted from the calcine by leaching with water after roasting at the lower temperatures, but volatilization of lithium chloride was appreciable, amounting to 20 to 25 percent in a direct gas-fired furnace at temperatures of 800° to 850° C. At 1,000° to 1,050° C., volatilization was far from complete. Thus, it would be necessary to use both fume collection and leaching of the calcine, unless the roasting temperatures were sufficiently high to volatilize all the lithium chloride. Because of the well-known difficulties of collecting chloride fumes, it was decided to search for a better process."

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density hackfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: I. Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the 'traditional' approach to the preparation of pastefill. 2. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producing paste/high density backfills. 3. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach. This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material- No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mincsin Canada.

THREE great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba; Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.1 The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surficial ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2 . 1 A Geological Reconnoissance of Cuba, by C. Gas-liquid chromatography has been applied to separating basic nitrogen compounds, such as pyridines and amines. Close-boiling compounds have been separated by exploiting structural and polarity differences, using selective liquid substrates dispersed on specially prepared solid supports. Development of these special supports was necessary in order to obtain symmetric peaks for basic nitrogen compounds; solution of this problem was important in applying gas-liquid chromatography to the analysis of basic nitrogen compounds found in shale oil. Attempts to analyze shale-oil tar bases by conventional gas-liquid chromatographic techniques, using Chromosorb4/ or Celite 545 as the support for a nonpolar liquid substrate, resulted in asymmetric peaks. These asymmetries were caused by adsorption of sample vapors on the solid support. Symmetric peaks were obtained when strongly polar liquid substrates were used on either Chromosorb or Celite. However, a solid support giving symmetric peaks only with strong polar substrates restricts the choice of substrate, and frequently, desired separations cannot be achieved.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion widens the existing four-lane bridgetunnel corridor to eight lanes through construction of two parallel tunnels, interstate widening, and bridge expansions. As part of the design-build contract, a supplemental geotechnical investigation was completed to support the design. The investigation for the subaqueous tunnel segment consisted of over 48,400 linear feet of drilling and 7,100 laboratory tests. This paper discusses the challenges of planning and executing a large-scale geotechnical investigation for underground works in a marine environment and the use of big data for effectively managing, interpreting, and transmitting data to the design-builder consistently throughout the investigation.

De acuerdo a este estudio geológico se infiere que tanto el oro y el hierro pertenecen a la costa, así como los yacimientos de plata, plomo y zinc son de la cordillera volcánica, la línea de tungsteno de Cabanillas se encuentra asociada a granitos, los depósitos telegramáticos de cobre, antimonio, mercurio y plata, se encuentran relacionados a líneas tectónicas en la depresión del Titicaca. Asimismo en el yacimiento oriental, tenemos el peri y apomagmáticos de calcopirita, plomo-zinc, plata, plomo-plata, antimonio, oro, tungsteno y estaño. Finalmente, la repartición de zonas mineralizadas responde a dos causas: la asociación a varias clases de intrusiones y la relación directa a distintas categorías de líneas y regiones tectónicas.

Many flotation plants use pH to adjust the pulp chemistry of their system to achieve optimum separation. For example, in a sequential lead/zinc circuit the pH during sphalerite flotation is increased to 10.5 or greater to depress galena and pyrite, thereby improving selectivity for sphalerite. However, maintaining a pulp at a particular pH value does not necessarily provide the operator with an abundance of information regarding the chemistry changes occurring within a plant. This paper provides the reader with a number of pulp chemical observations in several plants, showing that the same trends are noted over time; however, the magnitude of the measured values do change. Further, the changes in magnitude are invariably associated with a change in mineralogy. Thus, is measuring pH enough? Can the Eh, dissolved oxygen and temperature be measured at the industrial scale reliably? And, are these measurements useful?

A small group has been set up at the Dominion Observatory, Ottawa, to make a survey of terrestrial heat flow throughout Canada. Terrestrial heat flow is the heat rising from the interior of the earth and escaping at the surface, and is calculated from a knowledge of under-ground temperature distribution and the thermal conductivity of rocks. A small number of diamond drill holes are being sunk for the purpose of measuring temperatures below the surface, but the program is inadequate for a thorough survey. Mines and holes drilled for other purposes are being sought by the Dominion Observatory group to supplement their own drilling program. F ROM January, 1.962, to December, 1964, geo-physicists of many nations will be cooperating in the "International Upper Mantle Project." Unlike tl1e International Geophysical Year, which was mainly concerned with the fluid layers surrounding the earth, the Upper Mantle Project is an intensive study of the solid earth. Canada, with its large land area and extensive Precambrian Shield, is an active participant in the project.

"Modeling of the magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) and thermodynamical processes during the industrial scale Direct Chill (DC) casting of aluminum slabs is performed using a combination of ANSYS/CFX and ANSYS/EMAG software. The electromagnetic field is modeled through ANSYS/EMAG, while hydrodynamic and thermodynamic processes are modeled through ANSYS/CFX. Both packages were modified in order to calculate MHD flows in the liquid pool that forms during aluminum DC casting, and they were unified into a software combination that provides simultaneous simulation of all the above processes. The simulation shows that the electromagnetic stirring of the molten aluminum changes the shape of the solidification front (solid-liquid interface) very dramatically, namely it becomes significantly flatter. This effect should improve the internal structure of aluminum DC slabs and allows us to increase the casting velocity.IntroductionProduction of Aluminum alloys with high mechanical properties and structural uniformity is one of the main goals of industry. The preferred production method of aluminum alloys in most modern plants is Direct Chill (hereafter DC) casting because it offers high productivity and commercial success. One important limitation of this technology is the development of centerline shrinkage in slabs larger than about 1 meter. The improvement of the internal structure of long DC cast slabs can be achieved by electromagnetic stirring (hereafter ES) of the liquid metal above the solidification front. This intensifies heat transport in the zone close to the solidification front and suppresses shrinkage formation."

The surface roughness of unfilled rock discontinuities has a major influence on the deformational and hydraulic behaviour of discontinuous rock masses. Although it is widely recognized that surface roughness is comprised of a large-scale (waviness) and small-scale (unevenness) components, most investigations of surface roughness have been restricted to small fracture surfaces (< 1m2). Hence, the influences of the large-scale components of roughness are often neglected. Furthermore, these investigations typically focus on analyzing roughness in terms of two-dimensional profiles rather than the complete three-dimensional geometry, which can lead to potentially biased estimates of roughness. This contribution demonstrates the use of a new optical digital measurement system, based on the principle of triangulation, to digitize a large-scale natural rock discontinuity surface at both outcrop-scale (~6m x 2m) and lab-scale (~100mm x 100mm). Subsequently, the digitized surfaces are systematically analyzed using the three-dimensional roughness methodology proposed by Grasselli to investigate the dependency of roughness on sample window size and measurement resolution.

"The Ontario Division of Inca Metals Company, a Unit of Inca Limited, operates eleven mines, four mills, three refineries, one smelter and one iron ore recovery plant. All but one mine, mill and refinery are located within a fifty kilometer radius of Sudbury, Ontario. A mine-mill complex is located some 100 kilometers west of Thunder Bay on the shore of Lake Shebandowan and a nickel refinery at Port Colborne.During the past 10 years the use of recycled water in our milling operations has increased to more than 95% at each mill. This high degree of water reuse has reduced the (a) need for fresh water and (b) the contaminant level of the downstream aquatic environment. The aggregating of effluents in a common receptor provides a process water having a consistent quality thereby minimizing upsets in mill metallurgy while concurrently improving the operating economies and the downstream aquatic environment."

The thirty-fifth consecutive National Safety Competition sponsored and conducted annually by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, closed with several noteworthy accomplishments to its credit. Some of them are: 1. A record low injury-frequency rate of 18.293 disabling work injuries per million man-hours equal to that established in 1957. 2. The third lowest injury-severity rate (4,335). 3. The second highest number of mines and quarries participating (672) 4. A record number of participants finishing the competitive year without a disabling work injury. 5. All recipients of Sentinels of Safety trophies free of disabling work injuries for the first time since 1952.
