In this work it was evaluated the environmental impact of sunflower plantation for biodiesel production. It was considered, for life cycle analysis (LCA) of sunflower in familiar agriculture in the South of Brazil, data collected in 23 experimental farmings with sowing in the period from August to November (2006 -2007). The LCA has considered the plantation conditions, energetic efficiency, man power, diesel volume, type of machines, fertilizers and pesticides used. From the analysis carried through it was evidenced that the sunflower produced in small scale does not need the use of tractors to have an excellent productivity and low impact. Therefore, the sunflower can be cultivated, with the necessary cares, in periods that do not compromise the man power for other cultures and the sunflower is an alternative so that the familiar property can produce biodiesel.

Fine particles float poorly and less-selectively under normal flotation conditions. One of the promising methods for fine minerals is the utilization of the principle of Flocculation. Hydrophobic flocculation flotation (or floc flotation) was tested on a magnetite concentrate that was finely ground to be micron particles, for producing a concentrate with sulphur grade less than 0.1%. After that, slurry dispersing with water glass as dispersant, pyrite fines were subjected to hydrophobic flocculation induced by xanthate and a small amount of kerosene then the slurry was transferred to a flotation cell for recovering the hydrophobic flocs. The experiments carried out indicated that through one-step rougher and two-step cleaner flotation, sulphur grade was reduced from 1% to 0.1%. It has been found that the separation efficiency of the floc flotation process closely correlates with the main parameters of hydrophobic flocculation such as xanthate addition, conditioning time and kerosene addition.

For the sake of effective control of titanium-compound inclusions in the steel-making processes, especially for stainless steel production, the influences of alloying elements of chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, copper and oxygen on the thermodynamic property of titanium in molten iron were investigated at 1873K. At a certain titanium potential controlled by the coexistence of Ti3O5 and Ti2O3 doubly saturation of steels, the interaction parameters between alloying elements and titanium in molten iron were determined as follows. [ ] From the investigations on the equilibrium of titanium deoxidation in molten iron, the activity coefficient of titanium and the first order interaction parameter between oxygen and titanium were determined as follows. [ ] Also, deoxidation equilibrium for titanium in molten 304 stainless steel was measured and compared with the calculated results using the determined interaction parameters.

The implementation of a flow-through yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) sensor for pH measurements in high temperature and concentrated electrolyte systems relevant to hydrometallurgical processing of nickeliferous laterites is discussed. Instrumentation involved the use of a custom made flow-through titanium electrochemical cell. Accuracy and validity of the pH measurements at temperatures up to 250C were assessed using concentrated sulphate process solutions ranging from synthetic binary sulphuric acid ? water solutions to progressively multicomponent metal ? sulphate solutions simulating laterite Pressure Acid Leach conditions. The measurements were also compared with theoretical models using recently obtained thermodynamic data. A difference of ±0.25 pH units was observed between measured and calculated pH values at temperatures. This is an acceptable difference given that these are the first direct high temperature pH measurements ever on the concentrated acidic sulphate solutions. This result is encouraging more research for the development of industrial electrochemical systems for direct pH measurements in autoclaves.

"India’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and its low value fishes such as sardines, sciaenids, goat fishes and leiognathids amount to 60%. The fish meal obtained from these resources is mainly used presently as an ingredient in live stock and aquaculture feeds. These fishes offer vast scope in the production of pet foods. Pet foods prepared with leiognathid fish meal (60%), maize flour (10%), wheat flour (5%), vitamin and mineral mixture (5%) and water (20%) and experimented with 50 cats and 50 dogs were found to be ideal. Depending on protein level, feeds are being formulated for experimenting with more number of pet animals. "The potential of hydrocarbon resources in the Arctic oil and gas provinces is enormous. Oil, gas and condensate constitute the basis of mineral resource base of the shelf zone of the Russian Arctic; summary volume of hydrocarbons exceeds 100 billion tons of conventional fuel. Only in the Shtockman gas condensate field in the Barents Sea explored balance reserves equal to 3.2 trillion m3 of gas. It is necessary to establish a special regime of nature management in the Arctic. Environmentally oriented economic activities should be more actively stimulated. The Energy Strategy plans that starting from 2010 in the Barents and Pechora Seas up to 10 million tons of oil and 50 billion m3 of gas will be extracted, reaching the level of 30 million tons of oil and 130 billion m3 of gas in 2020. This task cannot be solved without intensification of geological exploration on the continental shelf. Nonferrous metal recycling not only provides energy saving and environmental benefits but also is a significant factor in the supply of various types of metals used in our society. Recycling plays an important role in establishing the sustainability of materials. The total amount of recycled nonferrous metals by weight accounts for less than 5% but their value is larger than 50% compared to ferrous metal recycling which consists of about half of the total metal recycling in weight. This paper describes trends and typical achievements in nonferrous metal recycling and overviews the present and future of nonferrous metal recycling technology and business in Korea.

The leaching of copper from a printed circuit board (PCB) and the electrodeposition of copper from a cuprous solution in ammoniacal alkaline solutions were examined in order to develop an energy-saving hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from electronic scrap. In the leaching experiments, copper in the PCB was oxidized by Cu(II), and Cu(I)-ammine complex ions were formed. The copper(I)-ammine complex slightly depressed the leaching rate, while Cu(II)?ammine markedly enhanced it. During the electrodeposition experiments, the current efficiency of copper deposition was approximately 100% in the current density range of 200 to 1000 Am-2. The electrodeposition of copper from the Cu(I)-ammine complex solution favored the production of plates rather than powders.

In 1975 T. Nishizawa and A. Chiba reported on observed deviations from the ferrite-austenite local equilibrium in several diffusion couples based on the Fe-Cr system. In order to try to verify these results the austenite-to-ferrite transfonnation in a Fe-20 %Cr-Invalid Code [Fe-]-%Cr diffusion couple held at 1100 for 100 hours has been simulated. "In this study, zinc and lead recovery from zinc plant leach residue obtained from Çinkur using hydrometallurgical methods have been investigated by laboratory scale experiments. Considering more than one million tons leach residue (LR) rich in Zn (12.43%) and Pb (15.51%) in the stockyard and environmentally hazardous, it is essentially necessary to process Çinkur LR. Zinc and lead have been recovered in two main stages. As a first step, Çinkur LR was releached by using hot sulphuric acid for zinc recovery. About 72 % Zn was recovered by using 150 g/l H2SO4 at 95 oC in 2 hours with a pulp density of 200 g/l. Secondly, for lead recovery brine (NaCl) leaching tests were performed on the secondary Çinkur LR obtained after acid leaching process. In brine leaching while lead recoveries up to 95 % could be attained at a low pulp density, the maximum recovery obtained was 84.9 % at a high pulp density (200 g/l) with 300 g/l NaCl concentration in 10 minutes at 95 oC. Introduction Zinc and lead have been known and used by humans since ancient times and also they are important nonferrous metals [1]. Zinc and lead have different properties thus they are used in various application areas, ranging from automobiles to construction, from batteries to textile. Zinc and lead deposits are widely distributed in the Earth’s crust. The principal ore mineral for zinc is zinc sulfide, Sphalerite (ZnS), and lead sulphide, Galena (PbS), is the main source of lead in the world [2].Although zinc is generally produced from sulphidic ores (ZnS) or concentrates by Roast – Leach – Electrowinning (RLE) in the world, in Turkey, zinc production is based on zinc carbonate ores (ZnCO3), and at the Çinkur plant zinc was produced from zinc carbonate from its establishment to 1997 due to high reserves of zinc carbonate in that region. Çinkur is the only plant in Turkey that produces Zn from primary ore containing ZnCO3 by Waelz – Leach - Electrowinning route [3]. However, due to depletion of local high grade ores, oxidized ore concentrates were imported from Iran after 1997, until this plant was shut down. Therefore, there are two different leach residues (LR) which are Turkish LR (TLR) and Iranian LR (ILR) in Çinkur stockpiles. It has been estimated that the total amount of leach residue is more than one million tons of which the major part is Turkish leach residue (TLR)."

The trend in process engineering is to design compact, more efficient processes, there is the paramount requirement to get the job done right the first time going from the drawing board to full-scale commercial operation. To accomplish this goal, there is also the need for tools beyond the traditional engineering toolkit to evaluate designs through virtual prototyping, thereby reducing the risks associated with making design decisions. One of the most important tools that has recently come to the forefront of process design and development is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). CFD has been used at HATCH to address the key process parameters that drive the design of hydrometallurgical unit operations. This paper will detail the role of CFD at HATCH in achieving a superior level of confidence in the process design of autoclave circuits. Specifically, the optimum application of multiphase modeling including hydrodynamic, heat and mass transfer to hydrometallurgy operations, the impact of non-Newtonian slurry rheology on autoclave performance, and the challenges of optimizing the mixing of key reactants into slurries in autoclave reactors, is discussed.

"Impurities from an electrolytic refinery are typically extracted from the electrolyte utilizing conventional electrowinning cells. These cells are arranged in series with cascading solution flow and are commonly referred to as liberator cells. The Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold El Paso Refinery has optimized the removal of arsenic in cascading liberator cells by utilizing two separate feed solutions. The primary feed solution is recycled liberator electrolyte and the secondary feed solution is ""neat"" tank house electrolyte. The secondary feed solution is added based on the voltage response across the individual cells utilizing independent variable frequency drive (VFD) pumps. When the voltage across a cell changes, a signal is sent to the VFD pump to maintain a cell voltage of 1.98 volts. By maintaining this voltage the copper content in each cell exits at 2-4 grams per liter. This safely optimizes the arsenic removal as copper arsenides on the liberator cathodes.IntroductionDuring the electrolytic refining of copper, impurities from the copper anode report both to the bottom of the electrolytic refining cell as slimes and to the electrolyte. The impurities which enter the electrolyte are arsenic, antimony, bismuth and nickel. The impurities that report to the electrolyte during the electrolysis process gradually increase. As these impurities increase, they are incorporated into the refined copper cathode. There are many processes that have been used to remove these impurities from refinery electrolytes. Some of them are listed as follows: solvent extraction, ion exchange, hydrogen sulfide reduction, bioreactor, adsorption onto a low - solubility metal-oxide hydrate, adsorption onto activated carbon and EMEW cells. The conventional process used by the copper refining industry for controlling the level of impurities in electrolyte involves multistage electrolytic cascading liberator cells. In these cascading liberator cells copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth are removed as various mixed deposits from the electrolyte. Removal of these impurities is achieved through an increase in voltage resulting from the depletion of copper in the electrolyte through electrowinning. With this higher voltage, the Group Vb elements, arsenic, antimony and bismuth are deposited on the copper cathode and report as slimes to the bottom of the cells. Nickel is removed in a subsequent process."

"EXECUTIVE SUMMARYINTRODUCTIONThe commercial incentives for using molten aluminum in casting operations are numerous and substantial. Although these incentives apply broadly to both shape castings (foundry) operations and wrought alloy production, the merit of a particular motive is indeed downstream processing sensitive. Melting cost reduction is a universal incentive that impacts on essentially all aluminum products. At a natural gas burner cost of $4.50 per therm, for example, the reverberatory furnace energy cost is at least $0.01 per pound of aluminum melted, exclusive of melt loss, fixed costs, and other expenses. The Aluminum Statistical Review' cited 3.188 million metric tons of secondary aluminum that was recovered by the industry in 1995. This represents a re-melt energy cost of over $70 million. Other incentives to use molten secondary aluminum include throughput enhancement, metal chemistry assurances, environmental considerations, and the avoidance of an in-house scrap processing operation.A traditional disincentive to use molten secondary aluminum is metal quality. If a particular secondary processing operation was successful in achieving and preserving an acceptable metal quality level prior to shipment, the subsequent metal transfer and ladle delivery events would frequently obviate these efforts. For example, a metal superheat on the order of several hundred degrees is required for an unheated transfer ladle to travel 3 to 4 hours to a customer location. The rate of the y-alumina formation reaction approximately doubles for every 120°F increase in temperature, therefore, the effect of excess superheat on melt loss and metal quality is considerable. The prospect for recovery of rare earths from red mud, the bauxite tailings from the production of alumina is examined. The Jamaican red mud by far has the higher trace concentrations of lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, and yttrium. Scandium is also present. The dissolution of the rare earths is a major extraction problem because of the large volume of other materials present. The recovery processes that have been proposed include the production of co-products such as iron, alumina, and titania concentrates, with the rare earths going with the titania A critical examination of the possible chemical processes for the complete utilization of the red mud are presented Recommendations for research projects considered to be important in the development of a chemical separation process where no pig iron product is contemplated are also discussed.

Many processes developed for the mechanical processing of Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR) suffer from high processing costs. We offer a distinct concept for low-cost mechanical processing still allowing high value-added recycling of the recovered materials. The basic idea behind this approach is to produce saleable pre-concentrates at the lowest possible costs that can be further processed in existing separation facilities. Our process includes screening, size reduction and magnetic separation. Preliminary studies showed that fibers in ASR are magnetic due to adhering rust particles allowing separation into a fiber fraction and a non-magnetic rigid fraction by high-intensity magnetic separation. The fiber fraction is most suited for thermal processing. The rigid fraction mainly consists of plastics and rubbers with up to 10 wt.-% of non-ferrous metals, some inert material and copper wires. This fraction is very well suited for mechanical processing by, e.g., sink-float separation in existing metal separation plants. The non-metal fraction can be processed further to recover the plastics and rubbers. The process proposed in this study is expected to be substantially cheaper than full thermal processing. In addition, as it mainly relies on existing separation facilities, it can be applied in the short term.

"The McCoy/Cove mine, located in Eureka-Battle Mountain trend of Nevada, is a gold and silver deposit. Case studies of recoverable reserve estimation for gold and silver were made using multiple indicator kriging and volume variance correction. The grade tonnage distributions of recoverable reserves were constructed and compared with the distributions defined by blast hole assays. Optimal pits were generated by Whittle 4D pit optimization package to analyze the impact of different processing recoveries at different economic cutoffs. The results were compared with ordinary kriging. The study indicates that the proposed method for multi-mineral recoverable reserve estimation is more accurate than kriging in tenns of grade and tonnage. The method of using recoverable reserves for pit optimization will maximize global reserve recovery and revenue, and is more efficient than condition simulation regarding computing power.ABSTRACT ONLY"

"The hot formability of a microalloyed steel with 0.16 wt-%C modified with N is studied by using processing maps. Compression tests of cylindrical samples are carried out using a Gleeble®3800 simulator in the range of temperature between 750 -1000°C and strain rates between 0.01-100 S-1. For this alloy, an Ar3-temperature about 740°C is determined by means of dilatometry. Processing maps are calculated using the modified dynamic material model developed by Murty and Rao for different logarithmic strains. For the instability map, the parameter Kj developed by the authors in previous works is used and compared with other instability values. Softening in the flow curves provoked by induced ferrite during deformation at low temperatures and low strain rates is reflected in the n-value. Light optical microscopy (LOM) and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) measurements are used to study the microstructure of the hot deformed samples to determine the deformation mechanisms active and to verify the processing maps.IntroductionProcessing maps offer a good possibility to optimize thermomechanical process parameters and to avoid defects in the products. Prasad et al. [1] developed the processing maps using the dynamic material model (DMM) and Murty & Rao [2] modified it. Processing maps consist of two superimposed maps: the dissipation efficiency and the instability map. The processing maps can be used to detect areas with a good hot formability, which are normally related to restoration of the material by dynamic recovery/recrystallization. For a high dissipation efficiency value and no instabilities, a good hot formability is predicted. In the DMM no storage of energy takes place and so the material is considered essentially dissipative, this is only true for high temperatures and high strain rates [1]."

The first industrial application of direct solvent extraction of nickel from hypersaline sulfate feed solutions has highlighted the need to investigate the influence of chloride on the extraction behaviour nickel in the presence of calcium using Versatic 10 and the solubility characteristics of gypsum. Temperature-solubility curves for gypsum in various aqueous electrolytes were prepared. The solubility of gypsum is increased significantly by the presence of sulfate ions, while chloride ions decrease it for a given temperature. The anion effects of chloride and sulfate on the extraction of calcium and nickel by Versatic 10 corresponded well with the complexing ability of the anions. It was shown that the presence of chloride shifts the extraction isotherms for both metals significantly to the left, while decreasing the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium. The loading of nickel onto Versatic 10 in this system was shown to be at a maximum within 3 seconds, while calcium extraction took between 4 ? 5 seconds to load to a maximum. Chloride ions had no influence on loading kinetics of nickel, but depressed the rate of calcium loading. It was shown that in the presence of an excess of nickel, calcium loading is effectively eliminated, and that calcium is scrubbed from Versatic 10 within 2.5 seconds of contact with nickel electrolyte.

This paper describes a model that has been developed for the aluminum industry that allows scenarios to be evaluated to gain improved understanding of possible implications for our businesses. A brief overview of the model is provided.
