Some ferro-silicon furnaces have heat-recovery equipment. Here, the recovery of electric energy from the off-gases can be increased by increasing the off-gas temperature. This is easily done by reducing the amount of air which usually is mixed into the?off?gas to cool the gas mixture. If the off-gas becomes too hot problems with severe fouling or clogging of the gas channels close to the furnace is observed. The result is irregular stops to clean the off-gas channels. The paper focuses on the nature of the clogging phenomena and some of the ways to avoid clogging. A detailed experimental study was carried out at the Elkem Thamshavn Plant. Theoretical studies were performed to understand the particle deposition, turbulent multiphase fluid flow and off gas combustion in the off-gas channels. The study has resulted in reduced clogging.

"The present paper focuses on the action mechanism of anionic polymer dispersants in dense Si3N4 and SiC suspension. An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to determine the relationship between the macroscopic suspension viscosity and the microscopic adsorbed structure of a polymer dispersant at the solid / liquid interface. The surface interactions within the suspensions were analyzed in various dispersant pH and additive conditions. The addition of an anionic polymer dispersant decreased Si3N4 and SiC suspension viscosity and increased electro-steric repulsion force on the non-oxide surface in solution at pH> 6 which was the isoelectric point of the materials. It was assumed that the increase of repulsive force was promoted by a hydrophobic adsorption of polymer dispersant on the non-oxide particles.IntroductionThe surface of silicon nitride and silicon carbide powders in a water suspension system has quite a complex molecular structure. In the case of Si3N4, hydroxyl and ammonium groups form on the surface and the pH of the suspension is increased from neutral to about 10 due to surface oxidation. The particle surface is negatively charged in alkaline solutions (pH=10), because the isoelectric point of silicon nitride exists in the pH range from 5 to 6. However, in spite of charging the negative surface charge, an anionic polymeric dispersant is generally used for the reduction in slurry viscosity.In dense SiC suspensions, an anionic polymer dispersant is generally used in order to disperse aggregates and reduce the suspension viscosity, too. Since an anionic dispersant is used in alkaline solutions higher than the isoelectric point of silicon carbide, the dispersant adsorbed on the negative charged surfaces of SiC.Few researchers have discussed and estimated the adsorption mechanism and structure of anionic polymeric dispersants on silicon nitride and silicon carbide surfaces. This is because it is difficult to observe the structure and measure the interaction at the solid/liquid interfuce directly. However, new developments in surface-force measurement technology have enabled the determination of non-DLVO type interaction for analyzing aggregation behavior2. The use of the AFM for analyzing the effects of various surfactants and co-polymers on colloidal dispersions and solid surfaces has also begun to rapidly expand to characterize the interaction between solid surfaces."

"Under the 4-in-1 recycling system, Taiwan producers and importers who using packaging containers have responsibility to pay the recycling fees for recycling the waste packaging containers they produced or imported; while the collectors/recycling plants who collect/sort/recover waste packaging containers receive subsidy for conducting recycling. A reasonable pricing for recycling charge and subsidy is a way for sustainability of the recycling. The objective of this study is to provide an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes. This study employs a regression analysis and cost adjusting model to link the factors used for calculating product charge and recycling subsidy on recycling waste packaging containers with socio-economic indicators, raw material prices, wholesale prices, and secondary material prices. Study results provide estimated models to EPA in Taiwan for amending product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes.IntroductionUnder ""4-in-1"" recycling system in Taiwan, waste packaging containers are officially announced to be recycled. The waste packaging containers announced to be recycled include iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs. In order to compensate the recycling system, EPA charges associated manufacturers and importers for recycling fee and subsidies recyclers to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance. Basically, the budget for subsidy recyclers is from the recycling charge. That means if we want to increase recycling efficiency by increasing subsidy to recyclers then the manufacturers and importers have to pay more for reaching financial balance of recycling foundation. The benefit of recyclers and fee payers are always conflicted. The recycling charge and subsidy is thus argued by fee payers and subsidy receivers all the time. A reasonable pricing for recycling charge and subsidy is the only way to keep the recycling system sustainable. Moreover, a suitable mechanism has to be changed along with the changing social economic condition. The recycling performances and effectiveness of this recycling system is also highly dependent on the pricing mechanism. This study intends to provide an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic change. Related previous studies about recycling system in Taiwan with its performance include Hsu and Kuo (2002, 2005), Bor, Chien, and Hsu (2004) and Hsu (1999). Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values."

In nature, mercury is quite commonly found in association with antimony ores. This can be as a separate mineral such as cinnabar or in direct association with the antimony ore. The most common antimony-mercury mineral is livingstonite that occurs in places such as Algeria, Mexico, USSR and China. In the Roznava deposit in eastern Slovakia, tetrahedrite ore containing mercury ore has historically been processed pyrometallurgically for its silver and copper values. As well, in Tajikistan, major antimony deposits there contain significant mercury ore concentrations within the stibnite ore body. The mercury contained in these materials poses both a processing and environmental challenge. This paper will outline the processing of these types materials by industrial alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgical methods. The economics relevant to this potential application at Roznava in Slovakia will be outlined.

This paper outlines the detrimental impact that unblended ore can have on the Ni and Co recoveries and the ore slurry density with real data from the Caron low-pressure ammonia leaching process for the Punta Gorda ore. The author briefly discusses the reason for the decrease in slurry density that the process experiences. The lower metal recoveries in the process that are caused by the unblended ore chemical characteristics and variations are shown with a data base statistical analysis drawn from the results obtained from a pilot test, designed with different ore bypassed from the normal process flow and a similar ore from a similar metallurgical treatment. "Abstract: In this work, low temperature carbothermic reduction of Panzhihua low grade ilmenite after ball milling were investigated. The ball milling of ilmenite and graphite were processed in a ball mill. The milling process can attenuate the particle of ilmenite, and the ilmenite characteristic peak were broadened and weakened. The reduction temperature and behaviors are studied on the thermo gravimetric apparatus; lower temperature and higher reaction rate were obtained for the reduction of ilmenite with graphite after milled. The reduction temperature and times of ilmenite decreased to 1000-1025°C and 40-60min via milled for 4 or 8h; Low down the reduction temperature can eliminate the solution of Mg2+ and FeTi03 in a certain degree; the reduced ilmenite has an obvious loose structure, can favored the subsequent procedure such as leaching.1 IntroductionThere is about 9.66 billion tons of Vanadic Titan-magnetite deposited in Panzhihua, China. In this reserve, there is about 8.73x108 t ofTi02, Accounting for 90.54% of the Chinese reserves, and 35.17% of the international reserves and ranking first in the world. [JJ Titanium mineral deposits major classified into Rock type and Placer type. Rock type is the igneous mineral, which have great content of FeO (Relative to Fe20 3) and gangue. The rock textures are compact and almost are complex ore. Rock type Titanium mineral major are ilmenite and titan magnetite ore, difficult to separate the metal ore and gangue. l.21 Thus, the Ti02 grade of Rock type ilmenite much lower than the Placer type (Table land 11). Panzhihua ilmenite are the typical Rock-type, due to the higher contents of MgO, CaO and Si02 and the complex mineralogy in ilmenite in Panzhihua region, making its direct reduction progressively more difficult. Mechanical activation, usually carried out by energetic milling or ball milling, was reported to significantly decreased the reduction temperature and accelerate the reaction rate of reduction of ilmenite with carbon, silicon and Magnesium. f3·(>J It reported that the process temperature were decreased to 600-1000°C and the annealing time were reduced to 30-120min after milled for 50-400 h. Shorter milling time involved was imported for else procedure such as direct leaching. 171 Hardly any research had referred to the carbothermic reduction reactivity of ilmeite milled for a short time as 1-1 Oh. In the present work, the aim is to investigate the reactivity and reaction temperature of carbothermic reduction of Panzhihua ilmenite. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has tested cyanide leaching for recovery of palladium (Pd) from spent petroleum processing catalysts. Three different catalyst samples were supplied by a spent-catalyst processor. These catalysts consisted of a zeolite base and contained 0.4 to 0.7 pct Pd. During alkaline cyanide leaching, the catalysts exhibited ion-exchange properties due to their zeolite matrices. Hydrogen ions were released from the zeolite in exchange for sodium ions in solution, resulting in a significant decrease in solution pH. This could present a safety hazard because of the potential for release of toxic hydrogen cyanide gas. A pretreatment .step where the catalysts were contacted with a 1.0M sodium hydroxide solution was found to prevent the pH shift from occurring. Following the sodium hydroxide pretreatment, two stages of leaching at 160 °C with solution containing 1 pct sodium cyanide and 0.1M sodium hydroxide gave at least 75 and up to 95 pct Pd recovery. The Pd was quantitatively recovered from the leach solution by thermal decomposition in an autoclave at 250 °C for 1 h. The Pd content of the precipitate was over 50 pct. Thermal decomposition also decreased the total cyanide content of the barren solution to less than 0.2 mg/L. The catalyst leach residues passed the Federal Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure and the California Waste Extraction Test, indicating that landfill disposal of the leach residues would be acceptable.

Recent investigations of a 55-km long trend of intrusive complexes on southern Prince of Wales Island have identified significant resources of Nb, Y, REE. U, Zr, and a host of potential by-product metals. The northwesterly trend comprises multi-phased sodic alkaline and peralkaline diorite, monzonite, syenite, and riebeckite granite. There are at least three significant deposit types recognized, two of which, 1) pegmatite dikes/vein-dikes that zone laterally from the intrusions and 2) concentrically zoned pegmatites, contain most of the lithophile metals. A third, epigenetic replacement-type mineralization, contains much of the U resource. Other deposit types with minor or unknown resource potential include diatremes, carbonatite, and placers. This report summarizes the deposit evaluations, characterizes the mineralization, and estimates the resources. To date a total of 40.7 million tons of mineralized material is estimated as indicated or inferred. Most of the Y203 plus REO is at a grade exceeding 0.5% and half of the Nb20S exceeds 0.125%. Tonnage estimates would likely be substantially lncreased with additional exploration. Mineralogy is generally fine-grained and complex, and consists of more than a dozen principal REE-Y-Nb-U-Th-Zr phases, the sum of which may compose up to half of the rock. Approximately half of the REE-Y content comprises the heavy yttrium subgroup which is uncommon compared to deposits elsewhere. Although the Alaskan deposits are likely subeconomic at today's metal prices and consumption levels. recent technological advances suggest future demand may increase.

With the increase of proportion of biochar(without modified) replacing coke breeze, the physical strength of sinter decreases due to the faster burning speed of biochar. An investigation upon passivating biochar with boric acid was then conducted to strengthen sintering in this paper. A layer of thin film of B2O3 distributed in the surface of biochar was observed, which could reduce the contact between reaction gas and biochar. So the burning speed of biochar was decreased properly after passivation, and the combustion efficiency increased due to the inhibition of carbon gasification. The comprehensive effects of above changes could increase the maximum temperature of sintering bed, which facilitated to the mineralization of sintering mixtures. Eventually sintering indices got reinforced. Thus the indices of sinter as applying 40% passivated biochar were comparable with that of 100% coke breeze.

Syntheses of zeolitic materials were carried out from coal fly ash by alkali hydrothermal treatment as part of the reuse and recycle technologies of coal ash, For the obtained zeolites, the cation exchange capacity and acid resistance, which are very important in the practical use of cation exchanger in aqueous solution, are investigated during this stufY, The cation exchange amounts of the NaP, CaP and K-CHA zeolites are measured for various cations such as K+, Na +, NH4+ Ca2+, Mg2+, Pb2+, Cd2+ and so on. The change in crystallization degree are researched as a function of pH. The simultaneous removal ability of NH4+ and PO43- in solution is examined for an example of the water purification with CaP zeolite. From these results, the characteristic and its mechanism of cation exchange are clarified for the various zeolitic materials obtained from coal fly ash.

IMCO Recycling Inc. has developed a new, patented technology for the production of fertilizer, K-SOIL?, as a by-product of its aluminum recycling operations. This new technology can substitute for conventional technology which now results in a saltcake residue that is placed in 'landfills. Four years of research and development work by IMCO culminated in a U. S. patent issued April 5, 1994. As part of the technology development effort, IMCO engaged the services of a nationally renowned research organization and a prominent university. These two organizations have conducted in-depth agronomy studies In the laboratory, greenhouse, and the field. Results have shown K-SOIL? to be performance equivalent, on a nutrient content basis, to conventional potash fertilizer. The first field applications on commercial farms were made in the spring of 1994. K-SOIL? is a potassium-bearIng, granular solid which may find use in fertilizer blends, direct application, and other forms of fertilizer products. The overall benefit of this new technology is to create a useful by-product rather than generate a useless residue and, thereby, reduce or eliminate the amount of salt cake now placed in landfills. As such, It is a significant, step toward IMCO's ultimate goal of complete recycle.

The surface quality demands for galvanized and galvannealed steel sheets by the automotive and appliance industries have been getting increasingly stringent over the past few years. Intensive efforts by Hot-Dip-Galvanizers to meet these demands have resulted in substantial improvement to the hot dip coating process. However, elimination of zinc bath contaminants which directly affect the coated strip surface quality continues to remain a tough challenge. As part of our effort to improve the zinc bath cleanliness, Inland Steel Company has developed a test method to quantitatively measure the contaminants in incoming zinc spelters and establish a specification for incoming zinc quality. The test is currently being used for auditing the incoming zinc quality. The zinc suppliers are also using this test for quality control purposes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the test method and how it has improved the galvanizing operation at Inland.

In this study, the analysis method of trace element in pure indium using glow discharge mass spectrometry (GD-MS) has been established by correcting the analysis result, which was obtained from non-standard quantitative method of GD-MS. The effect of instrument operating parameters, the resolution and isotopes and the pre-sputtering time on the determination results were investigated respectively. The optimized operating parameters of the instrument were obtained as follows: the discharge current was 37.5mA and discharge airflow was 475ml/min. Mass spectral interferences have been eliminated using selected resolution and isotope. The pre-sputtering time was 30 min. 4 trace elements in two pure samples were determined for 6 times. The RSD were less than 20%. The content of trace elements in indium samples was determined by GD-MS and Chemical Analysis Method of Indium which is tested by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, respectively. The results were consistent with each other.

"Chromite concentrate after beneficiation can not be directly used in the electric furnace. Therefore sintering is one of the effective way to agglomeration, by which the chromite concentrate can be utilized and the power cost of ferrochrome smelting can be reduced. The properties of raw materials and the sintering process of chromite concentrate were studied in this work. The results showed that chromite concentrate used can hardly granulated alone, while chlorite addition can improve the effect of granulation. Moisture plays an important role in sintering process. The granulation effect is optimal when the amount of water addition is 12%. Strength and abrasion index are the evaluation indexes of sinter quality. It was found that the strength of sinter increased with coke dosage increasing to 12%, and then decreased when it continuously increased. Opposite regularities were found for the abrasion index of the sinter.1 IntroductionChromium is a very important metal element which is mostly used in the production of stainless steel. In the earth, it is always formed compound with iron as ferrochromium spinel (FeO.Cr203), and its mineralogical name is chromite.[1] Currently, the global production of chrome ore is about 20 million tonnage every year , in which fine ore (less than 8 mm) accounted for about 80% [2] Although the price of the fine ore is cheaper than the lump one, too much fines will lead to the poor permeability and causes increased electricity consumption while producing ferrochrome. Therefore, the agglomeration process of chrome ore is one of the effective measures to increase the usage ratio of fine ore."

The quality of metallic materials depends on their composition and structure and these are determined by various physico-chemical and technological factors. To effectively prepare materials with required composition, structure and properties it is necessary to carry out a research in two parallel directions: Comprehensive analysis of thennodynamics, kineties and mechanisms of the processes taking place at the solid-liquid-gaseous phase interface during welding processes and development of mathematical models of the specific welding technologies. We have developed unique method of mathematical modeling of phase interaction at high temperatures. This method allows us to build models taking into account the thennodynamic characteristics of the processes, the influence of the initial composition and temperature on the equilibrium state of the reactions, the kinetics of heterogeneous processes, the influence of the temperature, composition, hydrodynamic and thennal factors on the velocity of the chemical and diffusion processes. The model can be implemented in the optimization of various technological processes in welding, surfacing, casting as well as in manufacturing of steels and non-ferrous alloys, materials refining, alloying with special additives, removing of non-metallic inclusions.

"Fire Refined Copper (EI Teniente Three Stars) has been produced at Caletones Smelter of Codelco Chile since almost the beginning of its operations.Due to changing features of the copper market, together with the targets on technical efficiency and productivity, it has become more and more relevant for copper industry to reach both, good final product quality and a proper environmental control.At present, copper refining process at Caletones Smelter takes place in two cylindrical tilting furnaces, where solid fluxes are injected through horizontal tuyeres into the molten bath. (Fig. N2 1)Solid reagents are pneumatically conveyed and injected into the liquid copper bath attaining excellent solid - liquid contact, so the impurities removal efficiencies are found to be high. Same injection tuyeres are used to introduce both oxidising agent (normal air) and reducing agent (reformed gas) into the molten bath. Air or nitrogen is used as conveying gas for solid reagents, depending on the process stage.This pap~r gives a fundamental description of the process and industrial results related to the injection of blend of sodium and calcium carbonates to remove arsenic and antimony, silica and granulated reverberatory slag to remove lead and a mixture of calcium carbonate and mineral coal to reduce the selenium content of the fire refined copper."

Telfer Gold Mine treats both gold/copper oxide and sulfide ores in a remote location in the Great Sandy Desert, Western Australia. Currently, the oxide gold ore is treated in a conventional CIL circuit by blending the low and high grade copper ores to minimise cyanide consumption and allow smooth operation. The sulfide ore is treated through a flotation circuit to produce pyrite and copper concentrates. The pyrite concentrate is treated in the CIL. Copper concentrate is stockpiled and sold to a smelter for further processing. In recent times, as the depth of the pit has increased the copper head grade has also increased, to the point where the ore was becoming uneconomical to treat. In addition, it was desirable to reduce the amount of cyanide reporting to the tails dam both from an environmental and economical viewpoint. Newcrest Mining Limited engaged GRD Minproc Limited to evaluated a process to reduce the amount of cyanide entering the tail dam with consideration given to copper recovery. From this investigation, the Sulfidisation, Acidification, Recycle and Thickening (SART) process was selected. A detailed testwork program for SART was undertaken with the objective to design and construct a SART plant at Telfer. This paper outlines how the SART process was chosen and summarises the testwork that led to the design of the SART plant. It also touches on some of the important issues for designing this type of process.

In this paper, the practice of separating precious metals from base metals in gold-antimony alloy by selective chlorination leaching under controlling potential in China has been introduced in detail. The precious metals and the base metals can be separated completely when the complex gold-antimony alloy is treated by this process. The impurity metals were removed effectively since the leaching efficiencies of copper, nickel and antimony are over 99%, with direct recovery of gold being 99.83% that is about 20% higher than that of the original process and silver, antimony, copper and nickel are also recovered effectively. The gold grade of the resulting crude gold powder can reach to 94%.The new process has been applied in the treatment of gold-antimony alloy for two years, and many former procedures have been cancelled, such as electrolysis, Anode slime leaching by nitric acid, smelting in crucible and blowing in muffle. The new process is more shorten, lower cost and friendly to the circumstance comparing to the original process.

Siderite ore is abundant around the world, due to its inert properties of low grade, mudding when milling and low magnetic, and it is very hard to be beneficiated. Nowadays, decomposition by roasting becomes the main process for utilization of the siderite ore. The methods of energy input for roasting are normally electrical heating, coal or gas combustion. Because traditional roasting methods owns some disadvantiges, such as low energy utilization, high cost and/or large exhaust pollution, only about 10% of the siderite ores in China were used as iron concentrate. In this work, the possibility of roasting siderite ore with microwave energy is studied by both laboratory and pilot experiments. The result of laboratory experiments showed that the optimized condition is roasting for 20 min with a power density of 3 W/g, and the Fe content of the final sample obtained is about 59.12%. The pilot experiments result showed that the decomposition is thoroughly, and the main phases of the roasted material are magnetite and wustite, and the energy consumption of the roasting process is 695.8 KWh/t.
