Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes S.A. (Disputada) is proactively implementing closure and reclamation planning activities at its mining and beneficiation facilities (mining facilities) in Chile where regulations governing mine reclamation are not yet fully in place. These activities are being implemented to improve currently employed measures to protect human health and the environment and to enhance reclamation and facilitate future closure with regard to these areas when mining is completed. As part of this process, Disputada, with the assistance of Shepherd Miller, Inc., developed recommendations and guidelines for future closure and reclamation of the Disputada sites. These recommendations and guidance incorporate planning and operational and post-operational design considerations and practices, and standards used by the mining industry and regulatory agencies around the world. The criteria presented in the guidance are based on achieving conditions that will be suitable for the anticipated post-mining land use. This paper discusses the process and approach taken, and the results.

Water from the Forest Queen mine adit near Silverton, Colorado drains into a natural wetland. Because the pH of the water averages 5 and the iron concentration averages 18 mg/L, it was thought that the wetland might naturally treat the water. Of most concern with respect to the aquatic environment is zinc whose concentration averages 0.60 mg/L. Starting in October 1997, the surface waters, ground waters in the peat substrate, and the sediments in the wetland were sampled and analyzed four times over the course of four months. The adit water primarily remains as surface water where Fe, minor amounts of Al, and no Zn are removed. After the adit water enters the peat, then it is found that the pH rises to 5.8-6.5 and sulfate is reduced. The removal of Zn and A1 is caused by these two changes. However, Fe in its reduced state is quite soluble and may be remobilized in the reduced environment of the peat.

The chemistry and structure-activity relationships for four new classes of sulfide mineral and precious metals collectors developed recently are discussed in this paper. These collector classes are alkoxycarbonyl alkyl thionocarbamates and thioureas, dialkyl (or diaryl) monothiophosphates and dialkyl monothiophosphinates. The main emphasis will be to highlight the differences between collectors and their affinities for various minerals on the basis of data on kinetics of adsorption on pure minerals, natural ore flotation and microscopy of flotation concentrates. The mechanism of interaction of these collectors with sulfide minerals is also discussed with the available data on the FTIR and solution chemistry studies.

This study was initiated by the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop guidelines for determining the maximum economic recovery of resources in coal mines. The work was in response to a requirement in the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 and Federal regulations. The intent was to address the economic rainability of small, irregular reserves in existing longwall mines. In particular, there was a need to determine if room- and-pillar mining using a continuous miner (CM) was economically sound or whether unconventional (short or odd-shaped) longwalls could be used to recover small coal reserves economically. Small reserves, called "widgets " are left in longwall mines on one side of the mains near outcrops and adverse geological conditions or near any other location where reserve geometry does not lend itself to mining with a rectangular longwall panel. The work included the analysis of the geologic, geotechnical and economic factors that influence the recovery of small coal reserves; the analysis of historic changes in supply, demand and coal prices; the development of typical cost models for room-and-pillar and longwall mines; and the development of a practical methodology for determining maximum economic recovery. The methodology included an evaluation of the ratio of coal mined during longwall mining to that mined for development (LDR), as well as costs of maintaining coal quality depending on market conditions. The LDR is a good indicator of mine efficiency and overall coal recovery in modern longwall mines and, thus, is used to evaluate the increased costs associated with adding new development sections for extraction of small reserves. The study examines the economic feasibility of using unconventional longwalls for the recovery of medium-sized reserves, depending on site-specific geologic and geometric conditions.

Recent advancements in computer hardware have led to the development of new ventilation planning software for PC's. These programs now can be run more quickly and can display their outputs with graphical techniques. Only a few of the existing programs have the capability to display the output data graphically on plotters. Graphical presentation of ventilation simulation data is essential for quick and sure comparisons of alternative analyses. Recently a noticeable growth has occurred in the application of graphics for display and interpretation of the data that have been developed by simulation procedures. The process of mine ventilation network analyses used for planning and design can benefit from this development. The authors describe and present graphics-assisted software that has been developed to work with a mine ventilation simulation program. This software has some of the following features: - graphic editor on screen, - graphical display of output data on screen (EGA, VGA), - graphical display on plotter or printer, - scaling capability (desired part of the entire schematic can be displayed), and - such values as flow, pressure loss, gas concentration for branches, and pressure and elevation at junctions can be presented as labels.

he power generation industry may be required to reduce carbon dioxide (C02) emissions if regulations related to global climate change are enacted. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2 and would be a likely target for CO2 reductions. Compliance with the Kyoto Protocol will require a 33% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level, even with moderate load growth. This article describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs. It assesses how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered. The Global Climate Change Treaty signed at the Rio de Janiero Earth Summit in June 1992 set the long-term goal of stabilizing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The December 1997 Kyoto Protocol established short-term mandatory targets for the United States and 37 other developed countries. The United States' target is a 7% decrease by 2012 from the 1990 "greenhouse gas" level. Developing countries are exempted from reductions, according to the Kyoto Protocol, despite projections that indicate a significant increase in their emission levels. The Kyoto Protocol must be ratified by the US Senate. US power industry carbon emissions were 490 Mt (540 million st) in 1990 and are projected to be 680 Mt (749 million st) in 2012, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2. Assuming that the power industry is only required to reduce emissions by a proportional share, a 33% emission reduction, or 225 Mt (248 million st) of carbon, would be required to comply with

In today?s mining environment, improving production, performance, productivity and profitability is crucial. Production, ancillary, plant and shipping equipment need to be monitored and controlled by online systems delivering production statistics and real-time information to everyone involved, including equipment operators. Traditional systems currently in use today, operate in an iterative mode constantly switching between scheduling and execution. However, the real world tends to change in ways that invalidate such advance schedules. Agent based computing has been hailed as the most significant breakthrough in software development and the new revolution in software. Agent systems are being used in an increasingly wide variety of applications, including complex mission critical systems such as Air Traffic Control. This paper presents the possible ways that multi-agent systems can be applied to mine production and rehabilitation scheduling problems with focus on real time fleet management, plant and equipment performance monitoring, downtime and delay reporting, stockpile management, personnel and equipment tracking and product distribution and transportation.

Shovel operators are one step closer to having a better tool to operate and monitor their equipment. The development of a unified shovel interface is proceeding into phase three, focused on producing a standard application programming interface (API) for connecting onboard devices. This solution will positively impact safety, performance and productivity, and is the result of collaborative work driven by the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG). Proof of concept revealed During the spring of 2013, Peck Tech Consulting was engaged to develop the working proof of concept (POC) software implementation, which integrates multiple vendors? systems into a single interface using one-to-two displays. As a result, the GMSG developed a functioning, manipulatable, unified shovel interface proof of concept and unveiled it at the World Mining Conference in August in Montreal. The proof of concept effectively provides a unified operator interface that pulls together the many divergent systems onboard large shovels.

The Elliot Lake Centre was established in 1965 as an independent Centre for Continuing Education offering a variety of adult education services. In 1976 all retraining and community college type activities were transferred to the Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology which had opened a branch campus in Elliot Lake. Upon the completion of this transfer, the Elliot Lake Centre was then contracted in 1977 by the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to study the feasibility of establishing a research and information institute dealing with various health and safety concerns of the uranium worker. By late 1980, a federal charter was granted for the establishment of the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety, made possible through the cooperative efforts of the Governments of Canada and Ontario, the Ontario uranium mining and refining companies, and the Elliot Lake Centre. On 1 April 1981 the Institute officially began operations. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION In May 1978 the Elliot Lake Centre initiated a voluntary sputum cytology program for uranium workers. This program was financed by the Ontario uranium mining companies: Agnew Lake Mines Limited near Sudbury; Madawaska Mines Limited in Bancroft, and Denison Mines Limited and Rio Algom Limited in Elliot Lake. In 1981 additional funding was granted by Eldorado Nuclear Limited for a small group of employees at the company's uranium refinery in Port Hope, Ontario. Initially in 1978, program participants were accepted according to length of employment, radiation exposure levels (calculated in working level months) and/or smoking history. These restrictions were abolished within a few months and all uranium workers were encouraged to participate. From 1978 to 1979 the sputum cytology program was medically directed by personnel from the Montreal Cancer Institute. Until 1979 all data maintenance for the program was performed manually, however the effort required to sustain the system increased significantly as the number of participants grew. In September 1979 the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital, under the direction of Dr. F.G. Pearson, submitted a proposal to the Elliot Lake Centre to develop a data processing system to help coordinate the surveillance program. In October 1979, Dr. Pearson became the new Project Director. Director of the Cytology Program is Dr. D.W. Thompson of the University of Toronto who is responsible for all cytologic analyses. Developmental work to establish the new surveillance system was initiated in January 1980 and became fully operational at the beginning of March 1981. The following sections describe the Elliot Lake operations of the sputum cytology program now conducted by the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION As of 1 September 1981 the sputum cytology program has 518 participants enrolled. Eligibility is restricted only to a willingness to participate and the ability of an individual to produce adequate sputum samples. Each participant registers for the program at the Institute and is given personal instruction on methods of sputum collection. The majority of the participants in this program are employed by the uranium mining industry; some work for firms which are contracted by the larger companies. Many participants are either retired from the work force or receive disability pensions or workmen's compensation benefits. Other participants have been employed in the uranium mining industry and have since gone on to other employment; some work for various federal and provincial governmental agencies concerned with the mining industry. Some participants are referred to the program by their family physicians because of smoking histories and/or various respiratory conditions. A small number of these individuals have never been involved in the mining industry at all. A chart describing program participation by employment is found in Appendix 1. PROGRAM REGISTRATION In the Elliot Lake area, persons interested in registering in the program are required to go directly to the Sputum Cytology office located at the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. Each individual is interviewed personally by the Program Officer. For the employees of Agnew Lake Mines, Madawaska Mines and the Port Hope refinery of Eldorado Nuclear Limited, registration is possible during the Program Officer's semi-annual on-sitevisits. Participants are assigned, in chronological order, "program numbers" for easier identification. File labels are color-coded according to place of residence or, in some instances, place of employment. During the decade of the 1970's, a new emphasis was placed on assuring a safe and healthful workplace for all American workers. Much of the basis for this national effort was federal legislation: the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (amended from the 1969 Coal Mine Act). One of the agencies involved in this protection effort is the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In fulfilling its mandates under the 1970 and 1977 Acts, NIOSH conducts research, experiments, and demonstrations to support and stimulate advancements in health and safety practices. Priorities for NIOSH research are established primarily through congressional mandates, requests from the Department of Labor, needs as defined by NIOSH researchers, and surveillance information. Emphasis is placed on research in the areas of toxicology, industrial hygiene, physical and chemical sciences, physiology, ergonomics, engineering, psychology (behavior and motivation), and epidemiology (industry-wide studies). The framework of the current Institute program to identify, evaluate, and control occupational hazards includes activities in surveillance, research, evaluation, and training. These activities are planned and evaluated through a system that coordinates the efforts of eight research and scientific divisions. Each division develops projects to address program areas that have been identified by NIOSH management as having highest priority. In surveillance programs, the objectives are to identify substances and agents found in a representative sample of workplaces and to collect and evaluate information on rates of disease and injury in occupational groups. Information is also collected on occupational safety and health programs implemented by industry. Estimates of worker exposures and the potential for adverse health effects are considered in setting priorities for further investigations. A related activity, which also serves to provide technical assistance to industry, is NIOSH's Health Hazard Evaluation program. On-site investigations of workplaces are made in response to worker, employer, or government agency requests. Both industrial hygiene and medical examinations are conducted, and the results contribute to identifying new problems and evaluating their significance which may have public health implications beyond the particular worksites that are investigated. Field and laboratory research projects are performed to meet several objectives: - Characterize the working environment by evaluating current and past exposure levels for workers who are included in epidemiological or medical investigations. - Develop epidemiological information to define the association between the substance or agent under investigation and the acute and chronic health effects on workers. - Determine through animal studies the parameters of an association between exposure and effect. - Investigate the etiology of disease. - Develop sampling and analytical instruments and techniques and demonstrate their application for measuring toxic materials in the workplace. - Formulate sampling strategies that will accurately and precisely indicate exposure levels. - Develop medical procedures to prevent disease and to detect the presence of disease and early indicators of disease. - Assess the technology for control of exposures, including engineering and administrative techniques, personal protective equipment, and work practices. Presently, the research program is focused on reproductive effects, neurotoxic effects, injury/trauma, lung disorders, cutaneous disorders, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, stress-related disorders, effects of physical agents, digestive disorders, and renal and other organic disorders. In studying these issues, priorities are determined by the seriousness of possible adverse health effects resulting from occupational exposures, the feasibility of studying existing records or obtaining new data, and the size of the population which is potentially affected. Where there is low level of suspicion concerning adverse health effects or where an occupational disease occurs in a variety of industrial environments, investigations are limited to gross analyses of health effects such as review of mortality patterns. In such studies, the industrial populations selected are those for which existing data resources can be utilized. Such data consists of records of occupational exposures or health status which have been maintained by the employer, the union, or Government agencies. Where a review of the available information suggests that serious health hazards exist and the existing data resources are inadequate for quantifying the relationship between the specific biological response and type and degree of exposure, prospective studies are initiated. Information derived from such research is essential for the development of sound criteria for control of industrial exposures to noxious agents. Other input to the criteria documentation process comes from searching and evaluating the literature. Criteria documents contain the recommendation of an environmental limit where information is available to support it, as well as the recommendation of work practice controls, medical evaluation, information for workers to recognize and avoid the hazard, and identification of specific research gaps. In some cases, during the criteria document preparation, gaps in knowledge are found which necessitate further research before an occupational standard can be recommended.

Curved pulp lifters have been incorporated in SAG and AG mills in Australia. The aims have been to ensure complete discharge, at high throughput, of both slurry and coarse solids, especially at high mill rotational speeds. Curved pulp lifters can overcome incomplete discharge and back-flow of solids down the pulp lifter that can occur in straight-radial pulp lifters (and is a major cause of wear). They can be designed to prevent reverse flow of pulp via grates back into the mill. Experience with curved pulp lifters now extends to three years over three mills, in one mill as an installation from new and two as retro-fitted installations. Curved pulp lifters, relative to conventional designs, offer improved discharge and wear performance and well as high impact-resistance and wear life of the curved pulp lifter grates.

The use of a laboratory-scale magnetic fluid-based separator for coal separations was examined. A Frantz laboratory magnetic separator was modified by fabricating new pole pieces of the appropriate geometry to provide the proper magnetic field gradients. Two separation chambers, which were constructed of Plexiglas, were designed to fit between the pole pieces. A commercially available, water-based, ferromagnetic fluid was used as the separating medium. The separating density was changed by varying the current intensity of the electromagnet coil. Both batch and continuous separations were made using 0.59 x 0.50-mm and 0.18 x 0. 15-mm coal. The results are compared to those obtained using organic liquids.

The Mesquite mine is being operated by Gold Fields Operating Co.-Mesquite, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corp. The mine Is located in southeastern California about 56 km (35 miles) east of the farming community of Brawley, California. The mine has been in commercial production since early 1986 and Is a conventional open pit mine developed on 6.1 m (20 foot) benches. The gold is recovered by heap leach using permanent heaps built in multiple 6.1 m (20 foot) lifts. This year's gold production will be in the range of 5,600 kg (180,000 troy ounces). Current ore production is about 18,140 tonnes (20,000 tons) per day while the total tons mined Is averaging 65,000 tonnes (72,000 tons) per day. The climate at the mine is extremely arid with rainfall of 7.6 cm (3 inches) per year. From early May until late October daytime temperatures generally exceed 37.8 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) and can be as high as 37.9 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit).

Investigations were undertaken to evaluate peroxygen compounds for effective­ness in alkaline cyanide leaching of gold. The addition of peroxygens improved the leach results. Calcium peroxide was the best performed reagent to be employed. Improved reagent consumption followed the trend of calcium peroxide> hydrogen peroxide> no peroxygen addition. In general, preaeration stages could be eliminated, and improved leach rates achieved with no detrimental impact on leach perfor­mance. Interox has not developed an Au Plus (Trade Mark pending) system to utilise this new leach reagent. Initial plant trials are verifying its potential to give additional benefits.

As the mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources, consolidations in both the mining and mining service industries and a generational departure of experienced industry professionals is challenging today’s mining companies, not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies, oftentimes lacking in operating properties to draw from for experienced professionals and having to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This paper discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development Limited in developing its Çöpler Gold Project in central Turkey.

In a gas/coal outburst the gas plays an active, driving part. The proneness of coal to outbursts can be determined by means of its gas emission properties, since coal that is liable to outbursts differs from coal with normal gas emission properties in that it liberates its gas from the sorptive bond more quickly. There is a risk of outburst when the flow of metha¬ne originally desorbed by the coal is sufficient to move the loosened coal which has been broken suddenly. The violence of a gas/coal outburst can be evaluated from the distance of projection of the mass of coal. It depends on the gas pressure and on the liability to outburst of the coal at the original centre of the outburst. Both factors are complementary in their effects so that the same work is done in a gas/coal outburst when there is a high gas pressure and low proneness to outburst as when there is a low gas pressure and a higher proneness to outburst. The gas pressure in the coal increases with its gas content. Consequently it is possible to deduce the gas pressure of a coal seam from its gas content. In the Federal Republic of Germany the risk of a gas/coal outburst is thought to exist when the desorbable gas content of the coal reaches or exceeds the value of 9 m3/ton and if the specific limit value of the proneness to outburst is exeeded. The Mine Ventilation Testing Station of the Westfalische Berggewerkschaftskasse has developed a new method for determining the risk of gas outbursts immediately after taking the samples at the coal face (1), (2).

The state of Illinois is committed to direct support of the Illinois coal industry. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs’(DCCA) Office of Coal Development (OCD) provides incentive programs for coal and energy development. Illinois coal programs include tax and financing incentives for new coal-fired generation, infrastructure grants to expand coal mining and transportation systems, research and development grants to initiate and advance clean-coal technologies and demonstration grants to bring advanced coal utilization technologies to commercial-scale readiness. As a result of these efforts, the Illinois coal industry is reinventing itself and is now more productive and competitive than ever before.

The productivity of underground mines has increased dramatically since the introduction of continuous miners. A variety of new hazards have developed as a result. In the spring of 2004, Mine Health and Safety Administration (MSHA) held a workshop to brainstorm ideas to decrease the number of injuries associated with continuous miners. One of the main areas of discussion at the workshop was “trailing cable-handling injuries.” The method of handling the power cables over the years has changed very little while the technology and uses of continuous miners has advanced dramatically. This paper will discuss the main ideas brainstormed at the MSHA continuous miner (CM) trailing cable handling workshop and the history and root causes of cable-handling injuries, as well as proposed ideas developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to alleviate some of the cable handling issues.

The new position of stone, the oldest building material, in contemporary architecture, was described to me very concisely the other day by a very distinguished avant garde architect. He said rather wryly, "Do you know, if quarried stone had only just been discovered, we would all be calling it the most miraculous of all the modern miracle building materials." His prognosis was, I believe, much more than a witty quote. It echoes the surprise and. enthusiasm with which a considerable segment of the architectural profession is rediscovering stone as a most modern building material that offers unsurpassed values in beauty and practicality - well deserving of the term "miracle".

Cyanidation of gold and silver ores by conventional mining and milling techniques has been practiced for over a century. During the past decade, heap leaching has emerged as a viable process for treating certain gold and silver ores. (1) The rapid development of heap leaching for gold and silver ores is largely a result of lower capital and operating costs and faster start-up time than that offered by conventional mining and milling. In general, these features make heap leaching an ideal approach for exploiting either small or large low-grade disseminated deposits of gold and silver considered to be uneconomic by conventional methods. The development of heap leaching technology has evolved from the operations initiated in the western United States. The basic components of a typical heap leaching operation are depicted in Figure 1. Run-of-mine or crushed ore (usually 1 to 5 ppm gold) is delivered to specifically prepared impervious pads. Alkaline cyanide solution is applied to the surface of the heap and allowed to percolate through the heap (typically 10-30 ft high). Pregnant leach solution which drains from the heap is collected and stored in tanks of sufficient size or in collection reservoirs. Gold and silver are recovered from the pregnant solution and the barren solution is recirculated back to the heaps after reagent make-up.
