Industries in general, and mining in particular, have become safer than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction, as required, through job redesign, work procedures and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control must be practiced in a manner consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, which include the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to: • present a set of analytical tools to analyze injury experience data. • apply these tools on a case study example, • discuss the results of the case study, and • identify the application limitations and the future research needs.

Disposal of mine tailings has been recognized as an unavoidable burden of mining companies and local authorities. Conventional methods dispose mine tailings in a passive manner which hardly generates any value from them. On the other hand, growing local communities close to mines need more infrastructures which require great amounts of raw materials. In view of the above mentioned situation, a novel utilization of mine tailings is explored as alternative material for asphalt pavement, in order to extract more value from mine tailings and solve the high cost of pavement material. Inherent physical properties of the mine tailings were first investigated to find out their availability as pavement material. Then test specimens were made as mixture of the mine tailings and other pavement material to be tested in laboratory. The transport of dust particles from a turbulent air stream on to the surface of a mine entry is mainly due to the effect of diffusion, sedimentation and inertial impaction. While the literature in aerosol science contains many references on particle deposition, most studies apply to smooth surfaces in small, short tubes. The deposition data from those experiments may not be applicable to deposition in mine airways that have large areas of rough surfaces and extend several thousand meters. This paper describes the mechanisms of mine dust transportation and deposition, specifically, by estimating the turbulent deposition velocity for coal dust in mine airways. Data from in-mine experiments on ambient dust concentration and dust deposition along a straight entry were used. A statistical model for dimensionless turbulent deposition velocity was developed, and compared with the models developed by other researchers. The model shows that the distance from the dust source is an important factor in the turbulent deposition of mine dust.

This paper reviews the phenomenological models that are the basis for dynamic optimization and the alternative methods of mathematical optimization. These methods range from theoretically complex and costly to implement to intuitively comprehensible and readily implemented.

INTRODUCTION A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environ- mental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The environmental measure that reflects physiological strain is the link between the three elements and, since the turn of the century, the discussion of the merits of various indices has been prolific. One problem in selecting a suitable measure or index is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to accurately reflecting the physiological strain. For example, wet bulb temperature is simple to measure and, for a particular mining sys- tem, it may adequately represent physiological strain, however, it would not necessarily provide the same relatively safe measure in a different mining system. The acceptance of a measure which can be universally applied has been confounded by both development and predisposition. That is not to say that there is only one "correct" measure and all others are unsuitable. It is self evident that if the application of a particular index has resulted in adequate control, then that mea- sure is correct for that situation. However, an understanding of the limitations is necessary to ensure that adequate control is maintained as mining conditions change. Almost 100 years after the question of heat stress in mines started to be dealt with in a collective manner, an analysis of the available information is leading towards a general strategy to control this problem. In the paper, the developments in heat stress assessment are briefly examined and followed since the earliest published observations on the effect of heat in mines (Haldane, 1905), efforts to determine a relationship between an environmental measure and human performance are reviewed and summarised and the benefits of control strategies such as acclimatisation and shortened shifts are discussed as they relate to Mount Isa Mines. The results of testing the prototype air cooling power instrument are discussed and a heat stress control strategy outlined. HEAT STRESS AND AIR COOLING POWER The operation of the human engine is analogous to other engines where the conversion of chemical energy from the oxidation of fuel to useful mechanical energy is not 100% efficient. In a diesel engine it is about 33% and in a human engine less than 20% resulting in at least five times as much heat produced by the meta- bolic process as useful work done. Metabolic energy production is related to the rate at which oxygen is consumed and is about 340 W for each litre of oxygen per minute. Using measured oxygen consumption and an average body surface area of 2.0 m2, the approximate metabolic energy production associated with different mining tasks is (Morrison et al. 1968):- • Rest, 50 W/m2 • Light work, 75 to 125 W/m2 (machine, LHD or drill jumbo operators) • Medium work, 125 to 175 W/m2 (airleg drilling, light construction work) • Hard work, 175 to 275 W/m2 (barring down, building bulkheads and timbering) • Very hard work, over 275 W/m2 (shovelling rock) Heat balance is achieved when the rate of producing heat (the metabolic heat production rate) is equal to the rate at which the body can reject heat mainly through radiation, convection and evaporation. Heat exchange between the lungs and the air in- haled and exhaled is normally less than 5% of the total and there- fore usually ignored. Any heat not rejected to the surroundings will cause an increase in body core temperature. Since heat stress is related to the balance between the body and the surrounding thermal environment, the main parameters required to be known when determining acceptable conditions are those associated with the heat production and transfer mechanisms. These can be summarised as follows: Metabolic heat production rates (M - W) Skin surface area (A3) (and effects of clothing) Dry bulb temperature (t[ ]) Radiant temperature (t[ ]) Air velocity (V) Air pressure (P) Air vapour pressure (e [ ]) The rate of heat transfer to or from the environment depends on the equilibrium skin temperature t, and the sweat rate S,. These in turn depend on the response of the body to the imposed heat stress and the effect of thermoregulation (Stewart, 1981). Thermoregulation The body contains temperature sensitive structures which send impulses to the brain at a rate depending on the temperature. As part of research to develop a coal handleability index that predicts the ease with which coal will flow through a handling system, comparative tests were conducted with a Johanson Indicizer and a low-stress triaxial apparatus on 12 coals at a variety of gradations and moisture contents. The lndicizer test provides a rapid method for generating data associated with coal handling characteristics. The arching index measured with the Indicizer is a function of the geometry of the apparatus as well as the properties of the coal. The handleability index determined from triaxial data is a more direct measure of coal characteristics. The handleability index shows a wider range of values than the arching index and, therefore, appears to be more sensitive to coal variations. Neither the arching index nor the ratholing index, as measured with the Indicizer, agreed well with the handleability index. This is attributed to differences in sample preparation as well as to the tests themselves.

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine that employed nine-entry panel system using supersection technique under a cover ranging from 91 to 168 m (300 to 550 ft). Chain pillar squeeze and large roof-to-floor convergence were first observed at the belt transfer point on the very inby side of the main entries. It propagated outby quickly and within 24 hours it had covered an area approximately 1,250 m long by 762 m wide (4,100 x 2,500 ft). The failure was caught and stopped by a solid barrier pillar. Using computer modeling, the study indicated that the massive failure was initiated due to a combination of undersized chain pillars in some panels and weak immediate floor. Also, the study shows that the massive pillar failure expanded to a large area because of no barrier pillars between some panels and between mains and panels. Based on the computer modeling, alternative mine plans have been proposed to avoid such problems.

Artificial intelligence, and especially expert systems, are currently receiving considerable attention. Of interest to the control engineer is the utilization of these tools for real-time process control applications. To evaluate this technology, a real-time expert control system was implemented in one of the grinding circuits at Brenda Mines Ltd. The performance of this micro computer based expert system compared satisfactorily to the proven supervisory control system currently in use. The study confirmed the expectations that expert systems have potential for real-time, supervisory control of mineral processing operations.

Many models have been suggested in the past to obtain a satisfactory fit to flotation data. Of these, first-order kinetics models with a distribution of flotation rate constants are most common. A serious limitation of these models is that type of the distribution must be pre-supposed. Methods to overcome this limitation are discussed and a procedure is suggested for estimating the 'actual' distribution of flotation rate constants. It is demonstrated that the classical first-order model fits the data well when applied to coal flotation in narrow size-specific gravity intervals. When applied to material which is fractionated on the basis of size alone, the use of three parameter models, which were modified from their two parameter analogs such as rectangular, sinusoidal, and triangular, gave most reliable results.

Mining is a capital- and labor-intensive business, and profitability often depends on the ability to squeeze maximum efficiency out of every piece of equipment to achieve safe production. This means keeping every mechanized drill, loader, truck and bulldozer operating at all times, and having a system to coordinate the movements of people and personnel. Mines often use wireless radios to connect equipment with management systems. But growth and changes in a mine?s profile over time can require upgrades to the wireless network. In its openpit gold mine near Carlin, NV, Newmont Mining Corp. has recently upgraded to microwave radio systems to increase bandwidth while maintaining round-the-clock uptime on its wireless network. For many of its operations around the world, Newmont uses Minestar, an operational control software system that allows administrators to dispatch equipment operators and use GPS to track the precise position of every piece of equipment in an operation. Each of the approximately 150 pieces of equipment at the mine has a radio on board. These radios connect to a network backbone that carries information between the equipment and the mine?s operations center. When traffic began to bog down on this network, Newmont upgraded to Exalt microwave backhaul systems to carry dispatch, inventory and control information throughout its operation.

1. INTRODUCTION Empirical methods have always been important in tunneling in contrast to many other branches of engineering. Beginning in the late 19th century, when engineering entered the phase of formal modeling, this dichotomy could be seen to emerge even in the work of individuals. Culmann (1), Ritter (2) Kommerell (3) and others simultaneously were developing analytical approaches to bridge and building design and empirical approaches to tunnel design. The dichotomy remains. Empirical or simple analytical methods are used at most in the preliminary design of bridges and buildings, while they are used in all phases of tunnel design and construction. In fact, the past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in empirical methods, and with it discussion and controversy. This discussion has centered on the suitability of various methods. In some applications identical results are obtained with differing methods and in some cases radically different ones. On certain occasions the discussion has focused more on the methodological rather than empirical by taking issue with the appropriateness of particular parameters or the structure of some methods. This paper attempts to establish a basis for judging the suitability of empirical methods in tunnel design, and their applicability to particular cases. The paper makes no claim of exhaustiveness, and instead emphasizes basic requirements for application. Various methods are reviewed against this background. A detailed comparison of empirical methods and a description of their concept and background is now being prepared (4). Specifically the paper first defines empirical methods, and their purpose (Section 2), describes their structure (Section 3), and focuses on the basic requirements each must satisfy (Section 4). The development of novel methods for the investigation of the subsoil contributes to the improvement of geotechnical research, enhances the obtained geotechnical characterization and may reduce the investigation cost by reducing the number of required tests. Non-destructive testing methods, performed either in situ (i.e. electrical tomography, seismic refraction, etc) or in the laboratory can provide initial data and perhaps estimates of rock/soil properties. This study focuses on the development of rock material properties and/or characteristics based on non-destructive laboratory testing of a number of stones, ranging from porous (bioclastic) limestones to impervious marbles. Seismic velocity measurements as well as attenuation signals were digitally recorded using a digital oscilloscope. Data were processed using a novel technique of spectral analysis available through special Matlab packages employing Fourier transform methods. More specifically, the NFFT (Non Equispaced Fourier Transform) transformation was applied to seismic waves traveling through the subsoil using the Autosignal program (by Seasolve) and the Specgramdemo program included in the Signal Analysis toolbox of Matlab 6.5 (Mathworks). Results indicate a definite relationship between the frequency content of the signal and the rock type as well as the degree of saturation of the specimen.

All programs used to optimize main fan nowdays have to be run on the large and medium- sized computers. With a lot of array elements, complex processes, low convergence speed and large storage, these programs are both time consuming and difficult to be used in the micro computer. This program uses two languages (dBASEIII and BASICA) to calculate the network and to choose the fan respectively. It allows user to compare and choose the parameters of various kinds of fan and to transfer the selected fan parameters to the master program by a data communication system. Then the user can get the air quantity, the air pressure, the power and the efficiency of the main fan. The advantages of this program arc as follows: 1. It can be run on IBM-PC or compatible micro computer. 2. It can select a fan more quickly and less time consumingly. 3. It can choose desired one or a set of fans according to user's requirements. 4. It is suitable for the research institutions and coal mines.

This paper presents an approach for developing a Sustainable Development Indicators (SDIs) framework tailored to the Greek Industrial Minerals sector, due to its importance for the national economy. To achieve this goal, an overview of the Greek mining and minerals, and especially the Industrial Minerals sector, from a technological and a financial perspective, is presented. In addition, a brief description of the global initiatives to this direction is given. The proposed indicators are based on those presented in 2006 by the Greek Mining Enterprises Association (GMEA) adjusted for the sector of industrial minerals by taking into account economic, environmental and social issues, known as the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach.

Investigations of long-time grinding of fine quartz (to about 80% passing 0.35 pm) in a 0.6 liter stirred-media mill are described. Breakage rates and primary breakage distributions have been determined based on extensive characterization of the ground products by laser scattering/diffraction and gas adsorption. The results indicate that, while there is qualitative similarity between the breakage parameters for ultrafine and conventional (coarse) grinding, there are important, quantitative differences. In particular, it is found that primary breakage distributions become significantly narrower in the submicron sizes. The trend can be described using double-truncated log-normal distributions in which both a maximum (breaking) size and a grind limit are specified. The breakage distributions become progressively narrower as the size being broken becomes finer. Breakage rates follow a typical, consistent pattern in which the rate decreases with size according to a simple power law. Further decrease in the rates seems to occur after very long grinding times when the entire mill contents become finer than about 1µm. The effect is explained as a result of changes in the rate/size relationship in the submicron range.

The design of an information management system (IMS) for a mineral processing plant requires prior consideration of many factors, which can be broadly categorized into two domains, process plant considerations and IMS considerations. The process plant considerations include: plant characteristics, management and personnel issues, existing organizational standards and policies, and the level of existing hardware and software systems. The IMS considerations include: system functionality, system sizing and desired performance, hardware components, software components, and system support issues. All of these aspects must be addressed in order to achieve a functionally successful and cost effective system. The purpose of this paper is to lay out these design issues and, in doing so, to provide process engineers with a guideline with which to tailor a system that is best suited to their specific application. The paper is completed by presenting an approach that has been used in two Canadian concentrators. Both of these plants have incorporated MillEX, a software system designed specifically as the central component of a mineral processing IMS.

Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon will disturb over 2,500 ha of prime agricultural farmland in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 20 years. Mining of the Virginia deposit was initiated in 1997 and approximately 750 ha have been disturbed to date with approximately 150 ha reclaimed to support a mix of agricultural post-mining land uses. While considerable university research and corporate effort were devoted to developing environmental management systems and reclamation protocols for these lands, specific indicators of sustainability and restoration success were lacking. By 2003, it became apparent to the mining operator (Iluka Resources), local land-owners/farmers, local government, and the regulatory authority that testable indicators of reclamation success were essential for long-term sustainability. Virginia Tech worked cooperatively with all stakeholders to review the pre-existing research base and to propose reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. The state regulatory authority reinforced its position on a number of associated issues including necessity of topsoil return and specific comparative crop yield targets. Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources, and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45-ha research demonstration farm where the effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Corn and wheat yields in 2005 and 2006 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75% of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry.

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. Thunder Basin Coal Company's Black Thunder Mine is located 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming in the Powder River Basin. Surface coal mining operations began in 1977. The Black Thunder Mine has been North America's largest producing coal mine for over 5 years. Production in 1988 totaled 22.6 million mt (24.9 million st) of sub-bituminous coal. Thunder Basin Coal Company is a subsidiary of Atlantic Richfield Company. The mine began as a truck-shovel stripping and mining operation. Haul trucks of 154 mt (170 st) capacity were part of the original fleet. In 1985, 218 mt (240 st) capacity trucks were introduced to the fleet. In 1988 a dragline was added for stripping. A single, primary/ secondary crushing stream feeds either a slot storage facility or dual silos. Three loading points are situated over two rail loops serviced by the Burlington Northern and Chicago North-western Railways. A Near Pit Crushing and Conveying system is currently under construction. It is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of 1989. During the past 10 years, the conceptual crushing/conveying design has changed several times as technology and commodity markets have changed. The system under construction will have a capacity of 4700 mtph (5200 stph). The overland belt will be 3570 m (11,700 ft) long and 1800 mm (72 in.) wide. The belt speed will be 300 meters per minute (1000 fpm). Two separate crushing streams will feed the overland belt. Each stream will be comprised of a dump hopper at reclaim surface elevation, a drag feeder, a two-stage triple-roll crusher, and an incline conveyor of 2700 mtph (3000 stph) capacity. This article will describe the different concepts and factors that have resulted in the system design now under construction.
