The building of sanitary and storm drainage sewers in urban or environmentally sensitive areas often requires the use of tunnel construction procedures. While hydraulic considerations may require only small diameters, traditional tunneling techniques make small sizes the least economical. Current state-of-the-art techniques using highly mechanized systems of pipe jacking can provide cost effective solutions to the problems of construction of small size tunnels. The characteristics of mechanized pipe jacking allow rapid advances under difficult ground conditions. The basic pipe jacking cycle is used with a variety of excavation systems to permit the contractor to satisfy engineering as well as economic parameters. These characteristics and several of the systems available are outlined.

Literature is rather abundant on the topic of steady-state network analysis programs. Many versions exist, some of them have real extended facilities such as full graphical manipulation, fire simulation in motion, etc. These programs are certainly of great help to any ventilation planning and often assist the ventilation engineer in his operational decision making. However, what ever the efficiency of the calculation algorithms might be, their weak point still is the overall validity of the model. This numerical model, apart from maybe the questionable application of some physical laws, depends directly on the quality of the data used to identify its most influencing parameters such as the passive (resistance) or active (fan) characteristic of each of the branches in the network. Considering the non-linear character of the problem and the great number of variables involved, finding the closest numerical model of a real mine ventilation network is without any doubt a very difficult problem. This problem, often referred to as the parameter adjustment problem, is in almost every practical case solved on an experimental and "feeling" basis. Only a few papers put forward a mathematical solution based on a least square approach as the best fit criterion. The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility to apply the well-known simplex method to this problem. The performance of this method and its capability to reach the global optimum which corresponds to the best fit is discussed and compared to that of other methods.

A method of monitoring production, information, i.e., raw tonnage and machine state, from each working section has been developed. The method is based on the sensing of electrical parameters in each section load center, and the reporting of this information through the existing mine-wide monitoring system. A decision-theoretic type of pattern classification technique has been used to define the machine states. The basis of the method is presented in this paper, along with a proposed hardware and software implementation scheme. Information issues central to the development and use of the proposed production monitoring system are also discussed.

Improved environmental performance comprises one of the key objectives of the sustainable development in the mining industry. Within this framework, a research project was undertaken by TVX Hellas, a mixed sulphides producer in northern Greece, in order to develop and evaluate anaerobic wetlands as an alternative method for the treatment of acidic waters originating from old mine areas. The anaerobic treatment using organic substrates, aimed to neutralize the acidity of the mine drainage and remove the dissolved metals, such as Fe, Zn, Mn etc., in the form of insoluble compounds retained within the substrate. The effectiveness of this treatment method, as compared with the conventional neutralization techniques with alkaline additives, extensively used in the mining industry, was assessed based on environmental and economic indicators. The indicators applied included contaminant removal, land take per unit of contaminant removed, effluents quality, remediation of past environmental damage, energy and reagents consumption, capital and operating cost. Based on the above, the applicability of anaerobic wetlands for the treatment of acidic streams originating from old mined areas was concluded.

The use of activated carbon to improve the selectivity in the separation of base metal minerals from bulk concentrates played an important role in the development of separation techniques employed at Tsumeb Corporation's Tsumeb and Kombat mines. In this paper the Kornbat mill flowsheet and metallurgical data are given with particular reference made to the separation techniques using activated carbon. The mine's historical background, geology and mining methods are described briefly.

A commercialized dry gravity concentrator is operating on an alluvial gold deposit in the Boludo Mining District, State of Sonora, Mexico. The technology base of the process is the Rotary Air Concentrator (a dry circular air jig) that recovers gold from the desert sand resource. An overview of the Mexican operation and the dry concentration technology is presented. Application of the dry technology to pretreat­ment of heap leach feeds and other heavy minerals is a pos­sibility.

Aiming at characteristics of the soft coal roadway engineering geology and deformation, the exposure research of the soft coal seam, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation and program design were carried out. First of all, according to the disclosure, soft coal seam engineering characteristics and geological conditions in Xinxing coal mine were expounded. Meanwhile, the soft coal roadway bolt supporting axial effect, the bolt supporting transverse effect, the anchorage body mechanics strengthening mechanism and problems such as supporting strength have been analyzed. The paper pointed out that the soft coal with very small cohesive force can form a composite anchorage body under the combined action of the anchor cable group, the W-type steel band and the metal net. The soft coal body in the plastic damage area formed anchorage balance arch with a certain bearing capacity and adapted to the rock deformation, and which played an effective support role in the roof outside the balance arch of the roadway. Therefore, the full-cable support technology was proposed. And then, numerical calculation and comparative analysis were conducted on three schemes of the roadway with non-support, with combined support of “anchor bolt and cable” and the full-cable support. The results show that when the roof is supported by anchor cable, it not only controls the continued increase of the subsidence value of the roof, but also effectively suppresses the convergence amount of the floor heave value and the amount on the sidewalls of the roadway. Whether it is from the stress distribution situation, or the viewpoint of plastic zone scope, the combined support of full-cable is more reasonable than that with non-support and that with the combined support of “anchor bolt and cable”. Finally, based on the features of soft coal seam in No.2265 work face of Xinxing coal mine, the relevant support schemes were put forward, and its specific support parameters and cross-section designs were drawn as well.

One of the problems encountered when constructing a roadway is the planned route often needs to cross soils that are soft and highly compressible. An approach to dealing with soft and compressible soils is to construct the fill from lightweight materials, thereby reducing the stresses on underlying soils. Most lightweight fills have approximately the same cost, so the most important consideration when choosing a lightweight fill is that the material properties of the lightweight fill match the conditions existing at the site. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) has been used as a lightweight fill material for more than 30 years. The EPS used for road fills is typically in the range of 0.5 to 2 lb/ft3, and has a compressive strength of in the range of 10 to 30 lb/in2. If a higher strength material is needed, then the material density is increased, which also adds to the cost of the material. Another type of lightweight fill material that is commonly being used is lightweight aggregate (LWA). LWA can be created by passing slate or shale through a rotary kiln or reheating coal fly ash with other materials to form pellets or aggregate. Several companies throughout the U.S market these materials under a variety of names. LWA can have a unit weight from 45-80 lb/ft3. For sites where trucking granular fill does not pose a problem, this material may be an alternative to EPS. One of the drawbacks to using LWA is the availability of the material. Only a few companies are manufacturing LWA, so it may not be available or may be cost prohibitive in certain areas of the country. Lightweight flyash blocks have been produced which may fill the gap in unit weight between the EPS and LWA. Blocks have been produced with a unit weight as low as 30 lb/ft3. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to handle, and have a moderate compressive strength. Although the unit weight is dramatically higher than EPS, the strength is also higher. If lateral stabilization of the fill is a problem, then geofabrics or grids can be incorporated into the design to add lateral strength.

Tius paper describes the key considerations for design of impoundments for gold mine tailings. Design options available for construction are presented. The key considerations for design of a safe, economic and environmentally sensitive design are discussed. The dam design must also balance these conventional considerations with the pragmatic aspects of construction and operations and the risk of system upsets. Case examples of tailings facilities in Canada and Papua New Guinea are discussed.

This paper details the development of a functional work index that characterises the relationship between the energy that is imparted by a Roller Press into materials, against the resultant size reduction achieved. Such a Roller Press work index is necessary for this new grinding technology to differentiate it from Bond's grinding work index, and to clear up confusion that arises with such a comparison to Bond. The energy usage in a Roller Press does not follow Bond's "Third Theory of Comminution" but rather Rittinger's theory of new surface creation. The relationships for such a work index have been developed from the viewpoint of an equipment manufacturer with the hope that they will be of assistance to the minerals industry in the design of grinding circuits incorporating Roller Press comminution. The work index contains modification factors that reflects the effect of oversize, fines, moisture. closed-circuit operation and roll surface characteristics on the energy verses size reduction relationship. It has evolved from the results obtained from testing of a wide range of ore and mineral types that include bauxite, coal, kimberlite, limestone, iron and chrome ores, base metal and gold ores. The results show that even for such a diverse range of materials, they all demonstrate similarities of behaviour when comminuted in a Roller Press.

He worked at the Falconbridge in Sudbury area, also at Brenda Mines, and then he became part of the Brenda Process Technology group in British Columbia. He joined Freeport in late 1993 in Indonesia, and was involved in process control and automation. He is now the senior manager of metallurgy in New Orleans. He's responsible for designing Freeport's new 100,000-ton-per-day expansion concentrator, which is currently being commissioned. Please welcome Andrew. ANDREW NEALE: With the ongoing explosion in digital computing power, there seems to be no limit to what can be modeled, simulated, and controlled in the mineral processing plant. However, at each stage of development of a control system, it is necessary to complete a cost-benefit analysis for justifying the move to a higher level of control. Incremental improvements in plant performance, while often significant, must be weighed against the costs of implementation and long-term maintenance. This presentation will provide examples of what the author believes are misplaced or misguided process control efforts and make a case for the KISS principle as applied to process control.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

Borehole mining, as a viable concept for recovering deep sedimentary mineral resources, historically has been long on promise but short on results. Application of the technology seems best suited for recovery of Miocene phosphate resources on the East Coast of the US. These deposits are potentially enormous in scope and underlie sections of the coastal plain and the near offshore continental shelf. The landside portion of these deposits is generally too deep to mine using conventional open pit methods. Recovery of these minerals requires development of alternative mining systems. A significant proportion of the offshore resources appear to occur at depths below the practical limits of cutter suction dredges and may even exceed the limits of bucket ladder dredges. In most cases, these deposits are covered by overburden that must he removed and redeposited before the mineral section can be mined. The depth, thickness, composition of overburden and environmental sensitivity of a particular location would greatly impact mining system selection. It is probable that dredging would not be an environmentally acceptable mining method in many of the areas underlain by this phosphate rock. In cases such as these, new processes such as borehole mining must be evolved or the resource will remain undeveloped. A borehole mining test program, using an existing prototype borehole system, successfully extracted Miocene phosphate in northeast Florida in 1984-1985. The top of the main mineral zone was 80 m (261 ft) below the surface. Based on the results of this test program. plus subsequent laboratory testing and engineering studies, a new prototype borehole mining system was designed in 1986. This design incorporated several innovations of offering potentially higher productivity and lower power consumption than was achieved with the previous test unit. Economic restraints at that tine prevented the actual construction and testing of this new design.

Flowsheet improvements, such as series/parallel SX plant configurations, discontinuation of plant sumps and improved filter pumping concepts, the use of in-settler baffle systems, and the Krebs and combined mixer-settler designs offer opportunities to reduce SX plant cost. Today's plants employ permanent cathodes and mechanical stripping, and the increased capital cost can be offset by labor savings and higher current densities. The wider use of HDPE and new cell construction materials also reduce capital cost. The "Portelex" type of relocatable design embodies such new, cost-saving measures in a simple basic plant. Organic inventory and losses are reduced by new, fast-settling, hybrid organic reagents with improved kinetics and selectivity.

Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage -"the bottom line evaluator." Correct.

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.
