The bulk scavenger tailing from Aberfoyle's Hellyer Concentrator, which represents about one-third of the total tailing, runs about 2.5-3 g/t gold and 140-200 g/f silver. Both values are very finely disseminated, particularly the gold. Aberfoyle wished to establish whether ultra-fine grinding followed directly by cyanide leaching could be applied to the tailing for recovery of gold and silver. The work comprised the determination of gold and silver recoveries as a function of grind size and leaching time, the specific energy consumption required for continuous wet grinding of the tailing to the specified product size in a small horizontal continuous stirred mill, and an estimate of the rate of media consumption. The maximum extraction of gold, 23.3% was obtained from the finest product, with the highest cyanide concentration and longest leach time, confirming earlier work. A similar result was obtained for silver. The specific energy requirement for milling rose from 27.7 kWh/t for a P80 of 8.1 um to 219 kWh/t for a Pea of 2.3 um. The consumption of ceramic media was about 1.6 g/kg of final product. An extensive QEM'SEM Trace Mineral Search on the unground tailing failed to identify any gold-bearing particles but did identify silver-bearing particles which displayed a variety of textural associations and liberation characteristics.

New materials, design technologies and automation; converging with safety issues, higher energy and operating costs; have created a pressing need. The challenge is to integrate new technologies and traditional components into a reliable, compact, conveyor belt drive system.

The Spa1lation Process Because of the low thermal conductivity of many hard rocks, rapid heating of these rocks produces a thin surface layer in which the temperatures attain high values. Thermal expansion of this surface layer is constrained by the reminder of the still cool rock, and when stresses within the surface rock become high enough, the surface rock breaks away from the cooler rock behind it and flies or falls off as a thin flake called a spall. Then the next, newly exposed surface is heated, and the process continues. This process is the basis of spallation drilling. The hot gases from a jet burner provide the heat for spallation to occur, and their high velocity provides a scouring action that transfers heat to the rock and removes the spalls as rapidly as they form. Spallation is a process which works in very hard rock. It is dependent upon the thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal diffusivity of the rock but is also affected by any discontinuities in the rock. To date the efforts which have been made to evaluate the various rock according to their spallability has been minimal. As the success of this process is dependent upon the characteristics of rock it is expected that the study of rock mechanics will prove to be of greater value to this program than to the other mechanism for drilling and excavating rock. Commercial Uses of SPALLATION In the 19408s, the Linde Air Products Division of Union Carbide (UC 1 began developing spallation for use in mining taconite ore, which is presently the chief source of iron in the United States. In this work UC developed a jet-piercing tool that burned fuel oil with oxygen to produce spallation and contained mechanical cutters to remove rock that was not amenable to spallation. The UC jet-piercing machines have since produced about 40 million feet of shallow blast holes used for emplacing explosives in the taconite mines. During this work it was found that hole diameters could be increased by merely reducing the advance rate of the burners and that existing holes could be enlarged by making another pass through the hole with the same burner. The Browning Engineering Go. of Hanover, N.H., has developed a hand-held spallation burner to cut slots in granite. It has been used for a quarter of a century and is now standard equipment for quarrying granite throughout the world. This burner, which resembles a small jet engine oriented with its exhaust pointed downward, is the forerunner of a flame jet burner used to spall experimental holes in granite at maximum rates in excess of 100 ft/hr when operating in hard, competent granite. It uses No. 2 fuel oil, which is burned with compressed air. The system uses water to cool the burner and the exhaust gases. These gases, along with the steam produced from the cooling water, blow the spalls from the hole. Experimental Work Theoretical and experimental work has been accomplished by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. This work is reported in Refs. (3) and (4). To verify the experimental results of this work laboratory scaled down field tests were conducted using two we1 1 characterized granites from quarries in Barre, VT and Westerby, RI, under defined heating conditions. In the laboratory tests a propane - oxygen heating torch was used to direct a flame at the granite surface and the spal 1 ing process was examined at various heating rates with a high-speed video taping system operated at 200 frame per second. This produced a time-lapse sequence where the onset of the spallation process was easily distinguished. Also the heat flux from the torch to a flat surface at various stand off distances and flows was measured. On reflection of certain overall circumstances which have pervaded the gold mining industry, it appears useful to point out some specifics which the writer hopes will improve the potential for success in the application of hydraulic dredges to gold mining activity. I will, prior to entering into that discussion, comment briefly on rule of thumb for the application of the three types of equipment. The three are bucket line, bucket wheel and drag line dredges. From a standpoint of high volume movement over a short distance, between 50 and 300 feet, the drag line dredge is historically the most cost effective type of machine to be utilized if bulk excavation is the single driving consideration. It is typical for this sort of equipment to operate in the 10 to 30 cents per cubic yard range, however, cost of operation is not the sole consideration. Typically the drag line mixes and remixes the material which it excavates. In the event that gold recovery is the object of the exercise, a strong potential for loss of the valued mineral exists. Additionally, drag lines do a poor job of bottom cleaning, particularly if there is a ridged or creviced bottom which must be cleaned and in some cases partially removed to assure recovery of the highest percent of valuable ore. The bucket line dredge has, until recently, been considered an extremely cost effective device. The DEAREX knowledge acquisition and engineering system is a teaching and exploration tool designed to facilitate the under- standing and development of expert systems by explorationists without the aid of a knowledge engineer and without recourse to expert system languages. To fulfill its objective, the DEAREX system considers the selection of exploration methods in desert areas. The system consists of three parts: 1. A tutorial which introduces the basic and selected advanced concepts of expert systems, 2. A sample program illustrating how an expert system works and can be used, and, most importantly, 3. A knowledge acqusition and engineering program which enables users to develop their own expert systems. The tutorial provides a brief and concise introduction to expert systems, a 10 rule exploration example which defines, explains and illustrates the basic concepts and design of expert systems, and a glossary of expert system terms including cross references. The sample program is a larger, self contained example of an expert system with some commentary illustrating addition- al expert system concepts and the role of the knowledge engineer in particularizing rules and ascertaining the knowledge base. Restricting itself to the selection of exploration methods in desert areas, the knowledge acquisition and engineering program questions the user and converts the answers into an expert system. Questions pertain to geology, infrastructure, availability of instrumentation, personnel, etc. Additional information may also included. In conclusion, some salient points concerning knowledge engineering toolkits, shells and knowledge acquisition capabilities such as contained in DEAREX are discussed.

Coal is being thermally dried in ever increasing tonnages today. Because of fire and explosion hazards, it is important that drying equipment be designed for maximum safety in operation. It is well then that we review dryer design and operation to bring out those features and operating practices which will provide maximum safety to equipment and personnel. This paper presents the author's views regarding the fundamental requirements for safety and explains the Heyl and Patterson approach to the meeting of those requirements in the design and operation of their dryer.

Falconbridge, Ltd. operates six mines (the strathcona, Fraser, Lockerby, Onaping, East and Kidd Creek) in the Sudbury and Timmins districts of northern Ontario (Fig. 1). These mines vary in depth to approximately 1500m and experience a wide variety of ground conditions. Problems of greatest concern include rockbursting, backfill pillar stability, wall and pillar stability, and the use of cable anchors. A study was initiated approximately two years ago to identify how numerical models could aid in the examination and possible understanding or solution of these problems. This paper discusses the use of numerical models at Falconbridge and describes a case history of their use in examination of rockbursting at the Strathcona Mine.

The environmental and economic problem created by pyrite in coal are well documented. The removal of pyritic sulfur prior to, or during, utilization has been the object of considerable research, however, much of this research has proceeded without a proper knowledge of the microscopic occurrences of pyrite in coal. This paper investigates the forms, occurrences, and variations in the distribution of pyrite in major West Virginia coal scan. Twenty-nine samples from twenty-two major west Virginia coal scans were selected for this study (see Table I). The samples were selected so as to be representative of the major coal producing areas of the state. All samples, except five, were collected at active surface mines, as indicated in Table I, and all except one were channel samples. The time interval between sampling and preparation of polished microblocks varied from two months to two years, though most were prepared within three months of collection. Grinding, screen¬ing, and riffling of samples to obtain 250 grams of -20 mesh coal for microscopic analysis strictly followed ASTM procedure D2013-72.

INTRODUCTION For the past 25 years, tunnel support requirements have frequently been determined, at least in North American practice, by classifying the rock according to the system proposed by Terzaghi (1), using one or more of the 8 Rock Conditions which he defined, the rock load then being selected within the range given for each Condition. However, there is a lack of published data comparing Terzaghi loads with actual measured rock loads, and it would appear that the degree of conservatism, or otherwise, of the Terzaghi approach is very often unknown. Excavation of 4 large diameter tunnels at the Tarbela Dam Project in Pakistan afforded an opportunity to compare Terzaghi and measured loads, through instrumentation of the steel ribs installed for temporary support, and by classification of the geology exposed during the tunnelling operations. In addition, the deformation of the rock surrounding the tunnels was monitored during excavation by means of borehole extensometers installed prior to the start of tunnelling. This paper describes the tunnel instrumentation and the results obtained therefrom, and relates these results to the Terzaghi load coefficients. INTRODUCTION Monitoring devices used for detecting and measuring airborne radon in mines are limited due to the rugged environment in which they must operate. Personnel monitors now available are either passive or require filters and an air pump. Area air monitors usually have bulky batteries or require electric power service to the instrument. Thus, there are few instruments presently in use in mines capable of discriminating between the various radon isotopes and their daughters. Occasionally it is desirable to determine which radon daughters are the principal dose contributors in mine air. In some areas, such as the Elliot Lake mine in Canada, there exist sizable quantities of 220Rn in the mine air due to 232Th in the ore (Cote and Townsend, 1981). Since there has been recent interest in radon daughters in homes and factories, as well as caves and mines, methods and instrumentation are being developed to address these cases. Some of these methods can be employed in uranium mines. Although there have been very few determinations of the three radon isotopes (222Rn, 220Rn, and 219Rn) and their daughters made in uranium mines, these isotopes have been measured in process buildings and in private homes under circumstances that suggest these isotopes could also be present in uranium mine air (Perdue, Leggett, and Haywood, 1980; Yarborough, 1980) METHODS Cryogenic air sampling was developed about 15 years ago (Rasmussen, 1972) to concentrate various airborne chemicals for later fractional distillation and measurement of various organics using gas chromatography. A version of this technique has been developed to measure tritium, krypton, and other radioactive gases in nuclear power station buildings (Anon, 1980). In this method, fractional distillation is used in conjunction with various detectors to identify the radionuclides present. The cryogenic method to be discussed here was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). It uses the liquid air accumulated in a sampling device for a direct analysis of all gamma-ray emitters present. The air sampler (Fig. 1) could be employed in a mine to liquefy air, using the difference between the point of liquefaction of air (~80 deg. Kelvin) and the boiling point of liquid nitrogen (77 deg. Kelvin) to liquefy an air sample. By using a proper orifice at the entry to the sampling vessel, air of any dust concentration and relative humidity [ ] may be sampled. The energy for sampling is provided by the slow evaporation of the liquid nitrogen; no other power source is required. This type of sampler could be used to augment the usual filter and pump, or passive system presently employed to estimate personnel dose from radon daughters. It would also allow measurement of any combination of daughters from the three radon isotopes. Upon completion of sampling, the sampler is closed and removed from the mine. This sampler, with its liquid air contents maintained by the slow evaporation of liquid nitrogen, is taken to the place of measurement. There, the sampler is opened, the accumulation of water and ice in the neck is chiseled down into the liquid air, and the sample is transferred quickly to a precooled counting dewar (Fig. 2). This counting dewar is then placed upon a gamma radiation detector; we recommend a high purity germanium detector. A determination of all the radon daughters can be made in 1 to 4 hours after the sample is taken.

Extraction of coal at Harworth Colliery is undertaken in the Deep Soft seam at roughly 1000m depth where the strata temperature is 42 "C. Production employs the longwall retreating method using high powered mechanised methods to extract coal at a rate of approximately 40,000 tonnes per week from a single face. This paper describes the climatic conditions encountered on a typical district , 6's district, where the initial ventilation set-up was as a typical U-type district which was antitropally ventilated. Under this initial set-up climatic conditions in the intake typically exceeded 30 "C effective whilst in the face area and in the return airway effective temperatures in excess of 32 "C and 33 "C were common . The paper then proceeds to describe the methods employed to attempt to improve the climatic conditions on the district, especially with regard to the coal face and return airways and describes in detail the effects of reversing the district airflow direction, employing homotropal ventilation, on the climatic conditions. The results of this reversal have been dramatic and have resulted in a substantial improvement in the climatic conditions experienced , however problems have been encountered with the control of methane gas since the changeover. The final part of the paper describes the results of computer simulations to analyse the effect of various ventilation designs on the predicted climate for future production districts in order to de- fine a district layout which will produce acceptable climatic conditions in the working zone without the need to use refrigeration techniques and which will improve methane gas control .

Deposition of calcium carbonate scale on activated carbon in the Pinson Mining mill carbon column circuit was causing erratic gold recovery rate, long acid wash time, high carbon attrition and long strip times. Continuous addition of a blended antiscalant into the mill thickener overflow at 8 ppm reduced the average carbon acid wash weight loss from approximately 10% to < 2%. Cleaner carbon improved the gold loading rate in the mill column. The loading on Column I was increased to 175-225 oz/ton carbon from 125-150 oz/ton for a two-day carbon advance cycle. The higher loading capability has given Pinson more flexibility and better control of gold flow through their carbon adsorption, stripping and electrowin­ning processes. Preventing calcium carbonate build-up on activated carbon with this antiscalant reduced acid wash batch time. This enabled Pinson to acid wash and regenerate every batch of stripped carbon for all the adsorption circuits. Shorter strip times have also resulted from the lowering of the calcium carbonate scale level in the loaded carbon. Carbon consumption has been reduced and is now averaging 0.046 lb/ton ore for the first six months of 1990 compared to 0.072 and 0.083 lb/ton respectively in 1989 and 1988.

In this study, with the primary goal of capturing ongoing digital transformation and automation impacts on the mining industry and its workforce, we conduct several interviews with mining industry experts in the United States and analyze our survey reports qualitatively and quantitatively through exploratory analysis. After the interpretation of the insights of industry experts, we proceed to generate a personalized and customized data analysis through a novel metric based on skills, knowledge, competencies and occupational requirements, which quantifies the job similarities for occupations in the mining industry based on the publicly available database of the U.S. Department of Labor. We use text analytics to tokenize and classify the interviews to capture a better understanding of major response categories. The temporal analysis shows that the critical competency needs in the data science and autonomy category increases from 28 percent in current demands to 43 percent. In defining our metric, we also calculate Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence for each job profile that enables determining whether and to what extent that job is transitionary in our test set based on the mean, standard deviation and kurtosis of each job of interest. Our analysis reveals that the in-group job transitions are significantly easier than the between-group transitions, proving our initial assumptions and common sense. The generated heat maps provide the opportunity to present the gap between the current job and desired job profiles that provide feasible career change options, among others, offering individualized career paths for job seekers and promoting potential job transitions. Through the collection of industry-specific individual employee data, the AI system is envisaged to continue to learn as end users engage with the system, thus creating a central data hub specifically for the future workforce in the mining industry. Although the study has limitations on generalizability for qualitative assessments, it presents itself as a valuable application of how qualitative and quantitative approaches could be of value for future worker training in the mining sector.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Li-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions, including thermal, mechanical and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining program is conducting research to prevent and respond to lithium-ion battery fires in battery-electric vehicles in the mining industry. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different suppression systems including dry chemical, Class D extinguishing powder and water mist for lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack fires. The effects of activation time and release time of the water-mist system on the suppression of the LFP battery (a type of Li-ion battery) fires were studied. The results of this study may be helpful for developing strategic firefighting and response plans for battery-powered vehicles used in mining.

Introduction The endeavours to mechanise the shaft sinking operations have led to the development of shaft boring using a V-Mole. The method implies competent ground and a pilot hole of sufficient verticality. This connects the top and the bottom of the shaft and serves for air ventilation and the transport of mullock. The shaft boring machine - nick name V-Mole - with a general pattern similar to a tunnel-borer reames the pilot hole to the designed diameter of the shaft. (Figure 1) The excavating of the rock, the removal of the mullock from the face and the lining of the shaft wall are done simultaneously. If they can be done also continuously this than creates a high potential of productivity. The verticality of the shaft can be garanteed due to the laser beam guided steering system. The diameter of the shaft is variable in steps of 0.5 m between 6.0 and 10 m in accordance with the need. It decides the capacity of the V-Mole to be applied. The depth of the shaft does not depend on the machine. It is practically unlimited as long as a suitable pilot hole is available. Up to 1988 almost 12.656 m of shaft have been drilled on 40 individual projects in Germany and the U.S.A. using a V-Mole. The rocks penetrated were Carboniferous sediments consisting of Sandstones, Shales, Conglomerates and Coal seams. The average uniaxial compressive strength was in the range of 300 - 700 Mpa with a maximum of 1700 Mpa in some singular sandstones.

More than 100,000 residents of Springfield and surrounding communities live on karst (sinkhole) terrain on the Springfield Plateau in southwestern Missouri. The city occupier much of the headwaters area of Wilson Creek basin, which is underlain by the Burlington Limestone (Mississippian), a cavernous, massively bedded formation averaging 150 feet in thickness. Sinkholes, some as deep as 75 feet, pock-mark the uplands. Stony red residual clay mantles the pinnacled limestone bedrock. Surface water lost to sinkholes and losing reaches of upstream areas resurges in springs and estevellas (reversible sinkholes) in the lower reaches of Wilson Creek. The Springfield Southwest Treatment Plant, an activated sludge process sewage treatment facility, situated about mid-basin at the confluence of Wilson Creek and a tributary, South Creek, serves the entire city. Effluent from the treatment plant together with industrial, street-wash and other waste from the-headwaters of the basin have degraded both surface and ground water quality in much of the Wilson Creek watershed. The area affected includes Wilson&apos;s Creek Battlefield National Park and recreational reaches of James River below the mouth of Wilson Creek.

Earlier work at Mintek on the development of gold-selective resins culminated in a plant-manufactured batch of the first generation of Minix resin. A subsequent pilot-plant campaign at a South African gold mine identified some problems with that resin. These included lower capacity and selectivity for gold compared with the laboratory prototype, and a slow but progressive loss in capacity as the resin was eluted and reloaded cyclically. These problems were overcome by chemical modification of the resin structure. Examples of these improvements are presented. The commercialization of a new resin for a new metallurgical application presents problems, which are exacerbated by the initial lack of demand for the resin because the process is unfamiliar to the mining industry. Progress in the commercial development of Minix is discussed in this context.

INTRODUCTION For the construction of several kinds of structures which pass through under railways, we have recently developed an effective and new tunnel construction method, aiming at more secure train operation during the construction as well as the rationalization in the construction works for such structures. Most important in carrying out the construction works for the structures under railways is how to maintain the safe operation of trains. For such construction works, temporary supporting structures and supplemental works have been often applied, for which high cost and long period for the construction have been required. While, this new tunnel construction method has the feature that it is capable of constructing definitive structures for various purposes, which, at the same time, acts as the temporary supporting members for protection of railways. Therefore, this method is now drawing much attention in that higher safety of train operation, low construction cost, and shorter construction period are accomplished, minimizing the period required for slackening the train speed during the construction works.

Genstar&apos;s underground mine at Texas, MD experienced a failure of the mine roof and subsequent damage to an underground backfill caused by surface floodwaters. A hydraulic backfilling program was developed in house to stabilize temporary repairs to the mine roof, replace 2300 yards of pneumatically stowed backfill, and complete a permanent repair to the mine roof. A flowable backfill material was developed, tested, and later marketed as the result of experience gained during this project. In addition, Genstar personnel developed backfilling techniques to meet the requirements of the repairs and completed work without the additional expense of non company services or contractors.
