In May, 1966, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a program to encourage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national security. Upon learning of the copper production expansion program, Duval Corporation entered into negotiations with GSA for development of the Sierrita copper-molybdenum property under the program. Agreements between the GSA and Duval Sierrita Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Duval Corporation, were concluded in 1967, with the Sierrita Concentrator beginning operation in 1970 at a designed capacity of 72,000 STPD. Subsequent additions and modifications have expanded capacity to 90,000 STPD. This property, located approximately 20 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, represents an investment including working capital of about $200 million. These funds were provided from an $83 million loan from GSA, repayable in copper valued at 38 cents per pound, $48.75 million of bank loans subject to U. S. A wide variety of subsidence prediction methods exist. They can be classified into empirical methods and mechanistic models. The empirical methods include profile functions and influence functions (Brzuner, 1973a,b; Kratzsch, 1974; Berry, 1978; Hood et al., 1981), the two empirical approaches of most practical value, if only be- cause they are readily programmed on calculators or computers. The profile functions have the advantage that they allow for ready determination of the necessary empirical parameters from field observations. They have the disadvantage of being restricted to subsidence calculations at a very limited number of points or lines above very simple (rectangular) mine geometries. This reduces greatly their practical applicability for damage predictions, which usually require estimates of strains, slopes or curvatures at structures that have arbitrary position and orientation with respect to planned mine excavations. Influence functions can be used to calculate subsidence at any point near an excavation of any in- seam outline. The main difficulty associated with empirical influence functions is the lack of uniqueness in the relation between subsidence and its cause, the convergence distribution over a mined excavation and its immediate surroundings. A secondary practical difficulty is the need for fairly arbitrary adjustments near the excavation edges, usually in the form of compensation zones (e.g. Brsuner, 1973; Hood et al., 1981). Determination of the appropriate empirical constants in influence functions is facilitated greatly when a direct mathematical connection exists between influence and profile function (several examples are given by Brauner, 1973 and by Hood et al., 1981), so that field data can be used to determine the parameters through backfitting of the profile functions, which is considerably simpler and more direct than backfitting of influence functions.

The production and consumption of industrial minerals in the United States traditionally have played important roles in mining and in the supply of the bulk of basic raw materials to the economy. This diverse group of minerals extracted and consumed by a variety of industries accounts, on a weight and volume basis, for most mineral-based products consumed in our economy. Industrial minerals form the bulk of the basic raw-materials feedstock for most of the construction, agricultural, and inorganic-chemical-manufacturing sectors, and a good portion of the transportation, manufacturing, organic chemical, and service sectors of the U.S. economy. In this presentation, I discuss current estimates of the amount and value of industrial minerals mined compared with all mining in 1997. I then present a summary of 1997 production of industrial minerals by several end-use industries. This is followed by a historical perspective of the consumption of industrial minerals as a subset of all basic materials, with special emphasis on the aggregates industry. The presentation concludes with a look at the geographic distribution of industrial mineral operations in the United States and some thoughts about the future.

Brohm Mining Company's Gilt Edge Mine in the northern Black Hills was a surface heap-leach operation that was active from the 1980s until 1999. Financing problems and acid drainage concerns at the mine were reported in the late 1990s. In February of 1999 the Governor of South Dakota announced plans to request the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help clean up acidic water at the mine and reclaim the site. In July 1999 the parent company of Brohm, Dakota Mining, filed for bankruptcy in Canada. Because of the bankruptcy and environmental problems, the State of South Dakota intervened and began water treatment. The mine was declared a Superfund site in 2000. Hydrologic issues include the potential for acidic drainage from the site. The mine is at the headwaters of Strawberry Creek, which drains into Bear Butte Creek. About four miles downstream, Bear Butte Creek loses its discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone aquifer, a regionally extensive and valuable ground-water reservoir. Other concerns at the site include treatment of acidic water in mine pits and a waste rock dump.

Water infiltration into subgrade infrastructure can cause major impacts on their performance. In addition to damaging the structure, water intrusion leads to deterioration of installations including electrical and mechanical components and in patron discomfort. To remedy these impacts, leak remediation is often carried out to halt water infiltration. Remediation methods include coatings, drainage, injection/stitch grouting, curtain (backside) grouting, and/or internal umbrella systems. Selection of the rehabilitation method depends on the structure’s use, owners’ priorities, its installations, structural conditions, surrounding ground, and hydrogeologic conditions. Since many factors influence the rehabilitation method chosen, a novel holistic approach is undertaken to understand leakage causes and consequences to develop the most appropriate, efficient, and reliable solution to extend the structure’s life. A reconnaissance phase combines geologic, hydrogeologic, and as-built information with detailed digital scans and visual observations to develop a database of existing conditions. This database, called a tunnelband, is used to develop the rehabilitation solution and made part of the contract documents, allowing for an informed bid by specialty contractors. Tunnelband and the preferred rehabilitation system are portrayed in contract documents, which are procured in various contract types depending on the owner’s preference and project characteristics. The pool of contractors are required to submit their understanding of this holistic approach by developing and supplying the owner with a detailed workplan. The completed rehabilitation is portrayed in detailed as-built drawings which also provide the owner with an operation and maintenance manual outlining for periodic observation of the structure and checking of its performance. Ultimately, this information is implemented into a “BIM Digital Twin” that is used by the operations and maintenance staff for long-term observations. This proposed novel framework for leak rehabilitation is currently being used successfully in a number of projects throughout the United States.

Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for producing adaptive control systems using fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms. These controllers can be used to efficiently manipulate complex systems in real-time. Furthermore, they can achieve an acceptable level of control despite limited feedback in the problem environment. The control systems that result from the implementation of the Bureau-developed technique are able to recognize when changes have occurred in the problem environment, evaluate the magnitude of these changes, and alter the strategy being used to control the problem environment. Fuzzy logic is used to provide the controller with a rule-base that mimics the "rule-of-thumb" approach generally adopted by humans in the area of process control. Genetic algorithms are used to provide the controller with the adaptive capabilities necessary for the control of complex time-varying processes popular in the minerals processing industry. The effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated on a laboratory pH titration system. The pH system includes a changing setpoint, titrants with varying concentrations, and the possible addition of a buffering solution.

Coal jigs have played a predominant role in U. S. coal preparation for fifty years. Recently, an improved fine coal jig has been used to prepare the middle size range coal. These efficient machines are changing the historical thinking about jigs and is consistent with trends in coal preparation throughout the world. The performance achieved and operating cost savings are causing a change in fine coal cleaning strategy. With the exception of a handful of operators, fine coal jigs are generally not well understood by the industry. The objective of this paper is to provide some insight into the past use of fine coal jigs and their potential in the future. Improved Fine Coal Jig Since the mid 701s, an improved fine coal jig has been employed to an important niche in preparation, the 19 mm x 100 M range of cleaning. Several factors due to mining and liberation considerations have caused an expansion of this middle range of coal resulting in a host of challenges for coal preparation engineers. Fine coal jigs have been commissioned in several installations in North America to handle these important applications as shown in Table No. 1.

The VERTIMILL has proven itself to be a reliable performer in heavy duty industrial applications. Applications have been extensively used in the mining industry, flue gas desulfurization applications, and industrial minerals field. The machine is a vertically stirred machine that utilizes a screw operating in a grinding media. Grinding media types have ranged from several sizes of steel balls as the most common to pebbles or ceramic media. Mesh-of-grind and final product size are the determining criterion for the selection of the media size used. Product size consists have ranged from very coarse to super-fine grinds of less than 25 microns. Savings in consumption of power, grinding media, and liners when compared to a conventional ball mills, have been realized. Savings in consumption of reagents have also been demonstrated.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program to evaluate alternatives to sodium cyanide in gold leaching, three organic nitrile compounds were tested for their effectiveness as gold lixiviante. The organic compounds examined were malononitrile, acetonitrile, and cyanoacetamide. The reagents were tested on an oxide ore, two carbonaceous ores, and a eulfidic ore. Acetonitrile and cyanoacetamide were shown to be ineffective gold leachante. Malononitrile was the most successful of the organic lixiviants. On an oxide ore, malononitrile performed shilarlyto sodium cyanide with extractions of around 80 pct. For carbonaceous "preg-robbing" oree, sodium cyanide was completely ineffective while malononitrile extracted 24 pct of the gold. When using a resin-in-leach technique, extraction with sodium cyanide increased to 60 pct and the extraction with malononitrile increased to 80 pct. On the sulfide ore, sodium cyanide and malononitrile performed similarly with 80+ pct extraction as long as the pH of the malononitrile solution wae maintained above 10.5. Malononitrile is six times less toxic than sodium cyanide as measured by LD, levels. Therefore, malononitrile has a significant advantage over eodium cyanide, but its high cost and undemonstrated usefulnees make it unlikely to gain acceptance.

The article cited above reflects the difficulty that is often encountered in interpreting different aspects of kriging. Baafi et al. write: "Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense." Their solution to this particular problem is to constrain the kriged estimates to data values that have positive weights, i.e., reduce the subset size contributing to the estimation. As Journel (1986, p. 133) has already observed, "Negative weights are no evil." Indeed, they are an ineluctable result of the Lagrangian multipliers in the system of simultaneous equations. The fact that data distant from the estimation point may be given negative weights simply means that the influence of such distant values must be negated because their influence is contradictory to closer values (as illustrated by Baafi et al. in their Figs. 3 and 4). Of course negative kriging weights applied to distant grade values will not in themselves induce negative grade at some central interpolation point. Negative grade values, rather, seem to be a particular artifact of automatic methods of estimation involving accumulations (Philip and Watson, 1985a, 1985b, 1987b). The elimination of negative weights, suggested by Baafi et al., is likely to exacerbate a quite different problem of kriging and piecewise spline interpolation discussed elsewhere (Philip and Watson, 1987a). In interpolating large data sets of scattered observations, changing local subsets or neighborhoods must be selected automatically. Because of the mathematical formulation of kriging and spline interpolation, discontinuities then occur between closely-spaced estimation points as the subset used in the estimation changes. If this subset is reduced in number and size, the discontinuities will be amplified and more common.

Wet bituminous coal fines from active and abandoned slurry impoundments are currently being examined as a recoverable feedstock for the production of coal water slurry fuel (CWSF). Preliminary analysis indicates that these coal fines can be converted into low solids, low viscosity CWSF with acceptable stability without the use of viscosity modifiers (dispersants) or stabilizers. Efforts are now underway to determine if the impounded coal fines can be economically cleaned by froth flotation to an ash level of < 12 wt. % and a total sulfur content of 1.2 wt. %.

In addition, dewatering is seldom complete because of aquifer irregularities and an operator&apos;s natural reluctance to start a costly study program, provision of wells, and pumping long before mining begins. In some cases, water pumped from the mine is used in treatment. This use is suggested as a way to minimize effluent effects. The true objective of water supply, however, is to provide water of satisfactory quality at the rate needed and at the least cost. Pumping to permit efficient mining isn&apos;t likely to coincide strictly with that objective during much of the mine life. The history of mining is replete with efforts, some highly ingenious, to control mine water. Methods that might be used to tackle the challenge Operators of wet mines are faced with both obvious pumping costs and some unquantified water costs. It is possible to reduce both types of costs, generally by reducing inflow to the mine area-and a surprising number of methods have been used to do this. Both the obvious and unquantified costs at a wet mine are now multiplied by: •Increasing costs of power, labor, equipment, and supplies; •Work at greater depth and, in some cases, in wetter ground; •Increasing use of hydraulic fill; and •Increasing zeal in protection of surface and groundwater quality. There are many easily overlooked ways in which mine water may add to hazards and costs (Loofbourow, 1973). As to their importance, consider these examples: •Increased maintenance of equipment, tires, roads, and ditches; •Increased difficulty in supplying proper ventilation; •Increased hazards from ice and use of electric power; • Loss of friable ore minerals and fines stuck on conveyances and in chutes; •Need to use more expensive methods and explosives; and •Decrease productivity of equipment and personnel. Expressed as cost per unit of ore produced, these unquantified costs can be high. Ideally, advanced dewatering should eliminate most of them. Advanced dewatering is a highly effective water control method, but it isn&apos;t problem free. Mines in ideal ground for advanced dewatering are most unusual. To be effective, water must be pumped at a comparatively high rate for a period longer than the life of the mine, from below mining depth. Effects on both groundwater and surface water are likely to be drastic. of increasing mine water costs are listed in the accompanying table. Ten groups of possible methods are cited. Most have been demonstrated in mining; two are known from industries other than mining.

Because so many interrelated technical, economic, legal and political factors are involved in evaluation of commercial mineral deposits, it is common practice today to assign such work to a team of specialists including geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, lawyers, and economic evaluation experts. Each member of the team plays an important role; the role of the geologist is particularly important. The geologist involved with evaluation of fluorspar deposits needs all the geologic and economic training and experience required for evaluation of metallic mineral deposits. Few, if any, industrial or metallic minerals occur in so many geologic environments as fluorite. Fluorspar, and aggregate of rock and mineral matter containing enough fluorite to make a commercial deposit (ore), is somewhat more limited in its modes of occurrence than fluorite, but it too is found in a variety of environments.

"INTRODUCTION Drill and blast (DnB) represents the most important, and sometimes the most costly processes in a mine.. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum B. O. and Temeng V. A. 2015). The use of available information to improve the DnB processes can be the difference between a highly expensive process and an optimized one. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets and key information from a wide variety of different systems. This information is normally used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during, and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration, and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety, and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the DnB process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting this data across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated, and sustainable processes for handling the information. In many cases the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Barbara H. Wixom, Hugh J. Watson, 2007). Our initial implementation plan for the DnB solution included using data stored at the sites; however we learned early on in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed. The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing Drill&Blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This paper is targeted at users that want to better manage their DnB data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information. This case study will discuss the process of implementing a DnB workflow at multiple sites within Freeport McMoRan Inc (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available using the EDW. The paper will begin with an overview of the project. The discussion will then describe how DnB processes were used to set up daily workflows in order to provide information for evaluating process and making decisions. The final section will discuss some of the technical challenges and how they were solved, as well as possible next steps for further improving the workflow."

Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Small Mines Development in Precious Metals will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 1987 at Bally&apos;s Hotel, Reno, NV. Topics at this meeting will include Problems Facing Small Miners; Understanding Geology and Ore Reserves; Mining-Production Options to Maintain Competitiveness; Processing for Precious Metals; Financing and Economics that Work for Small Miners; and Understanding the Environmental and Permit Maze. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.&apos; Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents&apos; budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. He will explain which recovery process proved to be the most economic. Other papers in the introductory session include How to Best Use Consulting Firms to Accelerate the Development Process, by H. North American mining companies are lagging behind their global competitors in participating in the outstanding opportunities in India. The Indian government has liberalized foreign equity participation in the mining sector by up to 50% and, in some cases, even higher. Delegates from Europe, North America and South Africa learned this at an information seminar held in London, England, Attendees were welcomed by L.M. Singhvi, the UK&apos;s high commissioner for India. He introduced a government of India delegation headed by B.P. Baishya, minister of steel and mines. Singhvi is an eminent jurist and leading constitutional expert. He reiterated the soundness of India&apos;s legal system. He also outlined the recent Investment Protection Treaty between India and the United Kingdom. Baishya emphasized thee geological diversity and strengths of India&apos;s domestic market with its population of more than 920 million people the second largest in the world after China and its reservoir of skilled labor. He also outlined the potential of India&apos;s untapped natural resources. The private sector is the backbone of the Indian economy. It accounts for 75% of gross domestic product (GDP). The current minimum program of the new United Front government envisions 12% growth in the industrial sector, 7% in GDP and direct foreign investment of US$10 billion a year. "Mining is an area that can attract a sizable part of this investment," Baishya said. "Projected growth of the Indian economy will require increasingly large quantities of basic raw materials, such as coal and base- and precious-metals to meet the needs of domestic and export markets." Administration of India&apos;s mining sector is divided into the Ministry or Mines for regulating and developing the country&apos;s mineral resources, five public sector Mining Enterprises, the Geological-Survey of India (GSI), the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM)and 25 states and seven Union Territories. The GSI is the second oldest (founded in 1851) and the third largest organization of its kind in the world, Baishya said. It has geologically mapped more than 90% of India&apos;s 3.2 million kmz (1.2 million sq miles) at a scale of 1:50,000. Several promising mineral projects have emerged from regional exploration programs conducted by GSI and the Mines and Geology State Governments. IBM recently completed a national mineral inventory. It covers 13,000 deposits/prospects of 61 nonferrous minerals. GSI also compiled a similar inventory on 61 coal fields. India is attractive to exploration companies for several reasons. These include favorable geology, accessible locations and a large mineral database. India also has many experienced geoscientists with well-equipped and efficient laboratories, Baishya said. Secretary to the Ministry of Mines A.C. Sen emphasized the largely untapped-geological and mining potential of India. He also discussed the new vistas that have opened up opportunities for exploration and mining. India has large quantities of mineral reserves, Sen said. Its vast Precambrian Shield - like those in Canada and Australia - is endowed with gold, platinum group and base metals, as well as coal and industrial minerals. Annual mineral production is valued at more than US$7 billion. Sen pointed out that India is the largest single consumer of gold. And domestic gold prices command at least a 20% premium above international prices. Recent diamond, gold and base-metal discoveries and prospects uncovered by GSI have generated investment interest from abroad, he added Delegates heard that the Indian Constitution gives the central government the job of framing legislation and the regulation and development of minerals. This ensures that mineral laws are uniform throughout the country. However, the right to grant mineral concessions, such as prospecting licenses and mining leases, rests with the minerals&apos; owner. In India&apos;s case, that is the state government. The Indian government has formulated several guidelines that regulate the granting of prospecting licenses for large areas. ? The central government will consider the requests of state governments for the granting of prospecting licenses for areas exceeding 25 kmz (9.6 sq miles). But the license must include a provision to conduct aerial prospecting of the area. ? Any prospecting licensing area should not exceed 5,000 kmz (1,930 sq miles). for a single license. And the total area held by one company should not exceed 10,000 km2 (3,861 sq miles) for the whole country. ? The grant of larger areas will be linked to a mini- mum expenditure commitment on physical targets. State governments will monitor these expenditures. ? The granting of large areas for prospecting will be linked to a schedule of relinquishment.

The Bureau of Mines, together with Foster Miller Inc., has developed a compact, high pressure scrubber system for continuous miners. Powered by water energy alone, it can move up to 1.4 m3/s (3,000 cfm) of air and scrub a significant amount of the dust in the air. Full- scale model and underground trials showed excellent performance. Operated at 8.3 x 10[3] kPa (1,200 psi) and 38 L/m (10 gpm), the scrubber has reduced operator and return dust concentrations by more than 50 pct. This paper describes the full-scale model development, system fabrication and underground evaluations of this novel and inexpensive scrubber.

Approximately 10 to 20 pct of exhaust aerosol mass from diesel equipped vehicles operating without exhaust controls is attributable to particles in the 1.0-10 µm size range. Recent in-mine measurements suggest that, in addition to reducing overall exhaust aerosol mass concentrations, the use of waterbath exhaust conditioners (water scrubbers) may significantly reduce the concentration of diesel exhaust particles larger than approximately 0.5 µm aerodynamic diameter. This implies that a measurement system that discriminates between diesel and mineral dust aerosols on the basis of aerosol size would have different accuracies depending on use of a water scrubber. To test this hypothesis, laboratory measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine diesel exhaust aerosol penetration efficiency through a water scrubber as a function of size and engine operating conditions. Size distributions were determined using a Micro-Orifice, Uniform Deposit Impactor. Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO x, O2 and gas-phase hydrocarbon concentrations were also measured. No significant effect was found for these gases other than a slight decrease in NOx emissions. The water scrubber served as a moderate aerosol control with reductions in mass concentrations of about 29±9 pct under most conditions. This reduction occurred for particles less than 0.2 µm and greater than 0.6 µm aerodynamic diameter. Coal dust aerosols are mostly larger than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter. With use of a water scrubber, separating the aerosol into two parts, greater and less than about 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter during sampling, results in collection of diesel and coal dust aerosol accurate to within 10 pct. Without a water scrubber in operation, such a sampling protocol would only be accurate to approximately 15 pct.

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. To address this problem, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH OMSHR) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of underground coal mining equipment, an example of which is the roof bolting machine. Field studies show that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that roof bolting machine operators would be exposed to, and it contributes significantly to the operators’ noise exposure. OMSHR has determined that the drill steel and chuck radiate a significant amount of noise during drilling. OMSHR and the Corry Rubber Corporation (CRC) have developed a bit isolator that breaks the steel-to-steel link between the drill bit and drill steel and a chuck isolator that breaks the mechanical connection between the drill steel and the chuck. This effectively reduces the noise radiated by the drill steel and chuck and in turn reduces the noise exposure of roof bolter operators. This paper documents the evolution of the bit isolator and chuck isolator. Laboratory testing confirms that production bit and chuck isolators reduce the A-weighted sound level generated during drilling by 3.7 to 6.6 dB.

Deep, stable, unlined space promises secure, efficient, acceptable solutions to several current problems. With truly favorable conditions, it can be economic as well. The basic requirement is sufficient sound, tight rock at required depth. This and unusual surface requirements point to special testing. An objective is to describe conditions for planners, estimators and contracts. A first stage concept study needn&apos;t be prolonged but should overlook nothing significant. Although observations and tests on core are considered essential, time and expense can be cut by supplementing then with tests on walls of rotary or percussion holes. In some places initial drilling could be shallow.
