INTRODUCTION A very important factor in froth flotation is the use of surface-active chemicals to form a froth in which minerals or coals are retained, thus allowing for valuable component enrichment. In coal flotation reagents (frothers) specifically designed to provide an efficient froth are employed. It is this group of chemicals that will be the primary emphasis of this paper. Despite the importance of frothers, surprisingly little systematic scientific work has been performed with the goal of quantifying frother mechanisms and the influence of particles on froth stability. Based on direct experimental observations in both batch laboratory and continuous large-scale flotation cells, the use of a frother significantly increases first, the possibility of a particle- bubble contact, and second, the efficiency of sticking after such a contact. Thus, a major role of a frother is to significantly increase the rate of flotation. This rate modification by a surface-active agent occurs through several observable mechanisms including the formation of a froth of relatively consistent character (bubble size and bubble density) under a variety of operational conditions, an increase in the ability to disperse air in the flotation cell, a reduction in the rate of coalescence of individual bubbles in the cell, and a decrease in the rate of bubble rise to the pulp surface. It will not be the intention of this paper to exhaustively list all frother accomplishments related to research, development and use in coal flotation. Rather, the authors will attempt, based on their experience, to present a technology overview of the role of frothers in the chemistry of flotation as successfully practiced at the industrial level. A very useful framework for flotation is the concept suggested by Klimpel (1984, 1984a) of viewing flotation as a system consisting of three major components: chemistry, equipment and operating variables. This is illustrated in Figure 1. A major point of this figure is that flotation is a highly interactive system with many technical and economic combinations of component settings available to operators to achieve a given goal. Sometimes simultaneously changing various component settings will reinforce a particular attribute. Also various component settings can cancel or counteract each other if changes are not chosen wisely. Thus, coal flotation must be viewed by the plant operator as a complex system with the economic/technical optimization of a given flotation process being directly related to the operator's knowledge of how his particular flotation system behaves as a function of the major control variables he has at his disposal. Typical important component settings in coal flotation are collector dosage, frother type and dosage, air flow rate, feed rate, particle size, pulp density, and the surface oxidation conditions of the coal. Because of the above complexities, it is sometimes assumed (especially in laboratory studies) that the choice of frother type and dosage is not as crucial as some of the other factors such as collector type and dosage (e.g., Leja, 1982). Detailed plant level testing of all of the factors of Figure 1 performed in recent years, Klimpel (1980, 1980a, 1982, 1984, 1984a), Hansen (19861, Klimpel, Hansen and Meyer (1982), simply do not support this assumption. The above testing has shown rather clearly that certain frother chemical structures consistently exhibit predictable performance characteristics in both mineral and coal flotation. In addition, significant changes in both rate and recovery can be expected. In the remaining sections of this paper, the following topics will be covered: requirements of chemicals capable of use as frothers, types of chemicals used commercially as frothers, some general performance characteristics of existing commercial frothers, and recent work in developing new frother chemical structures.

The flotation separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is investigated with chelating agents and neutral oil as synergic collectors. Test results indicated that a-nitroso-ß-naphthol has a strong collectivity for wolframite and selectivity against fluorite and quartz. The 8-hydroxyquinoline has collectivity and selectivity also. They both have a better activity than sodium oleate. However, the cupferron is slightly inferior. The synergism of chelating agents and neutral oil looks promising, especially for fine wolframite particles. The activation effect of Fe2+ and Ca2+ ions on separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is slight. The UV absorb-spectra measurements showed that the adsorption of chelating agent on wolframite is multilayer, and flotation behavior is related to chemisorption. The chelating agent which bonds to Fe and Mn sits on the wolframite surface, and the reaction between Mn2+ ion with collector is more significant. The essentials affecting reagent activities are the bonding factor and the hydrophobic factor. These factors are discussed by structure-activity relationship theory. The synergism of neutral oil is a secondary collector likely to lengthen the hydrocarbon chain of chelating agents.

By offering savings in space and capital cost compared to ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, horizontally mounted jet fans are commonly used worldwide to ventilate vehicular tunnels. They discharge high-velocity jets to transfer momentum to the surrounding airstream to induce longitudinal flow in the same direction as the jet. Vertically mounted jet fans installed in exhaust shafts have been successfully used to ventilate a large passenger rail overbuild in New York City. A comparison of shaft dimensions, vertical placement of the jet fans and measured shaft airflows is presented to evaluate optimum jet fan configurations. Measured shaft airflows are compared to airflows predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a three-dimensional model of the overbuild.

"As engineers, we are trained to use logical, rational problem solving to insure our mines operate at maximum efficiency. We tend to use the same technical approach to design safety into all mining systems. This works well for machines, but not so much for the human component. Recent insights in the field of behavioral economics provide useful ideas for addressing the fact that we are driven by emotions more often than by rational thought. Understanding the nonrational aspect of human behavior is an important piece of any safety system design. INTRODUCTION The most common economic model is based on humans making rational decisions; that given the proper information, we will make a logical, rational decision based on what is best for ourselves (Ariely, 2009, p. xviii). In many cases this is an accurate description of how we make decisions. As an engineer, I was trained to apply the precision of mathematics and logic to solve problems. As an engineering professor, I now teach this approach to bright young minds preparing them for a life of professional effectiveness as practicing engineers. That said, we are not only rational. Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, describes a model for how we think (Kahneman, 2011). System 1 is the part of our mind that is fast, intuitive, and emotional; while our logical, slower, and deliberative mind is System 2. According to Kahneman’s model, System 1 runs automatically, most of what you think and do originates in System 1. System 2 takes over when things get difficult, including the application of math and logic, and the resolution (or avoidance) of conflict. As engineers, we would typically assume that we operate in System 2 mode most of the time. This is where the model becomes useful, for Kahneman points out two important aspects of the dynamic between the two systems in our mind. First, System 1 has biases, systematic errors that lead to answering questions with an easier answer (rather than a right answer) before System 2 is engaged. Second, we can be blind to the obvious, and also be blind to our blindness. Complicating things further, System 1 cannot be turned off (Kahneman, pp. 24-25)."

Deep well disposal is a much used and abused term which is the panacea for wastewater disposal in some minds and creates near hysteria in others. It can be the answer to a difficult waste disposal problem, or if improperly employed, can create more problems than it solves. My purpose in this presentation is to focus on the value and limitations of deep well disposal as expressed by New York State's experience and policies. To he sure, I feel a place for such practices docs exist if adequate safeguards are utilized. I shall give a broad brush approach to New York's legislative, geologic and operational concerns and speak briefly on some case histories. I shall not delve deeply into the technological details since I am not an expert in mining exploration or well drilling.

The concept of subsystem characteristic curves for multiple-fan ventilation networks is presented through the construction of characteristic curves for two-fan, series-parallel networks. By considering fans as the individual network branches, the multiple-fan network is viewed as consisting of two components: any one fan branch, which is called the reference fan branch, and its associated subsystem. Thus, F subsystems can be designated for the network with F fan branches. Each subsystem contains one or more fan branches. The subsystem characteristic curve is the pressure-vs.-quantity curve of the subsystem. As illustrated in the example networks, the subsystem characteristic curve is not a strictly increasing curve and does not pass through the origin. The intersection of the characteristic curves for the subsystem and the reference fan branch represents an operating point. Multiple intersections therefore represent multiple operating points.

Comminution methods for base metal and precious metal ores have had considerable attention from mine operators, equipment suppliers and design engineers for many years and much of their work has been well reported. This interest derives from a healthy concern with the costs of comminution, often the largest single cost factor in ore dressing of hard ores. Many imaginative innovations have resulted. One notices a trend toward autogenous and semi-autogenous methods, combined with a trend toward very large equipment. Unfortunately, there has been less obvious cost incentive to experiment with softer ores. This is unfortunate because the consequences of inappropriate comminution methods can have an important effect on overall economics by influencing down stream processing and salability of final products. This paper concerns some of the factors to be considered in the selection of comminution methods for potash ores, and gives some specific examples to illustrate some of the principles involved.

Canada's gypsum industry began more than 200 years ago in the Maritime provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's 10 provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.4 Mt (9.3 million st) of crude gypsum, and 17 processing plants manufactured 2.5 Mt (2.8 million st) of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production. However, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum pose a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers. A new extraction method which includes a combination of gravity and alternating electromagnetic fields with interfriction of mineral particles was proposed (Tikhonov O.N., 1979) and tested in lab conditions at Mineral Processing Department of St. Petersburg Mining Institute. At the beginning of the work the main goal was to find an efficient alternative to traditional extraction methods (like shaking table, etc.) used for concentration of fine alluvial gold particles. After the method and a series of gradually improved lab separators (Tikhonov, et al., 1983) were positively tested for gold (Tikhonov, et al.. 1986) the efficiency of the method was also proved for extraction of and other heavy minerals from alluvial and ground ores in experimental work at the St. Petersburg Mining Institute. The fine heavy minerals were separated to concentrates with high technological indices (Andreev et al., 1987), (Tikhonov, Gladkov, 1987), (Tikhonov, Gladkov 1989). In parallel a semi-industrial gravi-electro- magnetic separator was made and several technological flowsheets were designed for testing the method in industrial conditions (Tikhonov O.N., Miazin B.N., 1987), (Tikhonov O.N., Tolstunov S.A., Jebelev V.V.,1989). A series of industrial tests accompanied with complete sampling and standard technological measurements were performed at several alluvial deposits, with good technological indices. Thus the method and the flowsheets displayed high additional recovery of fine alluvial gold particles during elkrated industrial experiments in Siberia (Aldan province). At higher concentrate grade this method, even in one-stage operation, increased gold recovery more than by 25% compared with shaking table (for particles -0.10 mm gold recovery was 82% vs. 55% by shaking table, for particles - 0.25mm the recovery was 97.5% vs. 61.8%). Experiments were performed by joint team of St. Petersburg Mining Institute and the Irkutsk Institute of Rare Metals (Tikhonov O.N., Gladkov S.A., Tarasova T.B., 1991).

The launch of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is one of the most challenging activity parts of the construction of a tunnel. Challenges are coming from limited space available, learning curve, concurrence of other activities and in some cases from the geological conditions. Launching a TBM is an extraordinary and complicated operation requiring a great level of planning. The Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM named “Chris” was successfully launched for the Northeast Boundary Tunnel, the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project in Washington, DC. Due to space and time constraints, the 8-meter diameter TBM was launched from a single 20-meter diameter shaft, with a 30-meter-long tail tunnel by means of umbilical connections. This paper presents the steps followed during the TBM assembly and launching to complete the excavation of the initial drive of the tunnel maintaining high level of efficiency and quality despite the space constraints. Specifically, it focuses on the methods and phases used to extract the excavated material (muck) from the TBM and from the tunnel, to supply consumables, precast rings and backfill grout. The paper presents results in terms of productivity, lesson learned and possible alternatives to be considered in similar conditions.

The University of Idaho, Department of Metallurgical and Mining Engineering, through the Generic Mineral Technology Center, has been engaged in mine design research at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, Idaho. The purpose of the research is to develop and implement the longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method for conditions at the Mine. The longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method involves backfilling mined stopes with a compacted tailings-cement mix. After the backfill has been allowed to cure, mining is resumed from underneath. Horizontal stresses in the Lucky Friday Mine are exceptionally high and rock bursts are a common problem. Beus and Chan (1980) have reported a 2:1 horizontal to vertical stress ratio at the mine with a 65-MPa (9,500-psi) maximum horizontal stress at the 1,295-m (4,250-ft) level. Using this mining method under these stress conditions, it is desirable to have a backfill material that has sufficient strength to safely carry the high horizontal wall loads while minimizing external steel supports.

The Upper Santa Cruz Groundwater Basin lies in the drainage area of the Santa Cruz River in Arizona, and extends upstream from the community of Rillito to the international boundary, see Figure 1. The principal water use area lies between and includes the cities of Tucson and Nogales. A subsurface geologic barrier near Rillito provides a reasonable dividing line between the groundwaters of the Upper and Lower Santa Cruz Basins. The Upper Basin contains the Tucson and Sahuarita-Continental critical ground- water areas. The Tucson Water Use Area encompasses the Tucson metropolitan area and extends from the northern boundary of the Basin south to the boundary between the Tucson and Sahuarita- Continental critical groundwater areas near San Xavier. The San Xavier Use Area is the San Xavier Indian Reservation. The north and south boundaries of the Continental Use Area coincide with the limits of the Sahuarita-Continental critical groundwater area. The first study of groundwater in this valley was initiated by Dr. G. E. P. Smith in 1905 and the results were published in 1910, followed by a series of bulletins of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arizona, covering the general field of groundwater development and utilization. Beginning in 1939, the Ground Water Branch of the United States Geologic Survey, in cooperation with the Arizona State Land Department and the Arizona Water Commission (AWC), have published a series of bulletins concerning groundwater occurrence and utilization in various areas of the state. In 1975 and 1977, the AWC published the "Arizona State Water Plan" (1), comprising a detailed inventory of water availability and use in the State of Arizona, and a study of alternative futures.

Intensive ventilation is required during the excavation of a mine opening and the subsequent exploitation of the mineral resources. The exchange of heat between the ventilation air and the rock mass has a major influence on the thermal regime of a mine, especially in the initial segment of the airway. In frozen ground, heat flow into the rock mass from the ventilation air can result in the eventual thawing of the permafrost, which can result in roof-rock instability. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of the dispersion process of ventilation-induced heat by thermosyphons placed on the surface of the mine. The principal uses of thermosyphons in the Arctic are to reduce the ground temperature to prevent potentially unstable permafrost from thawing and to increase the bearing strength of the material. The mathematical model of the physical problem, generally known as "the Stephan problem," takes into account the varying thermo-physical properties of air and the frozen and thawed rock mass, the thermal properties of the freeing fluid in the thermosyphons and the phase change of water. Finite-difference techniques were employed to determine the temperature isotherms around the thermosyphons. It was found that two rows of thermosyphons on a 10- x 10-m grid provide an acceptable design spacing for reducing the ground temperature around the mine airway.

The study of flotation kinetics was first reported by Garcia-Zuniga1 in 1935. Since then, literature on the subject has grown with the time. 2-19 Although there is an abundance of flotation kinet¬ics models available in the literature to describe flo¬tation systems, they are mostly of academic interest and are seldom applicable for use in the industrial environment. Several reasons contribute to the wide gap in the industrial -application of the academic models. These include: 1) the lack of generality in the model, e.g., the model is limited to certain size ranges; 14 2) the academic models involve complicated mathematics; 5,6,10,11 3) confusion about the order of the flo¬tation rate, e.g., several authors proposed a first order rate model, 1,15,16 whereas the others propagated a second order rate model: 2,17,18,194) the use of an unrealistic rigid value, such as the use of a maximum recovery of 100%, 5,8,19 which is unrealistic in industrial operations; and 5) the use of graphs that confuse the reader rather than interpret information. 2,3,10 This paper intends to introduce a simple and easy to understand empirical flotation kinetics model along with a way of presenting the model in an informative graphical form, which should stimulate the interest of other practical engineers to become concerned with practical application within the mineral industry.

Mine management in general, and mine maintenance in particular, has lagged in using computers as an effective management tool. SF Coal Corporation, in conjunction with the development of the new Lee Ranch Mine, is developing a computer-based maintenance system as an integral part of a total mine management information system. The system includes the ability to schedule and plan preventative maintenance on all rolling stock and mine facilities, project and track component life, and evaluate and schedule manpower requirements. The system hardware, shared by accounting, warehousing, engineering, production and management, consists of a multi-user, multi-processor micro-computer.

This paper is presented with particular reference to the findings of the OECD Advisory Conference on tunneling held last July in Washington D. C. A great deal has been said about the Conference in the past few months, but it may be appropriate to review briefly the background and objectives of the Conference to better understand how the mining community can relate its underground excavation problems to the results of the Conference. OBJECTIVES OF THE OECD CONFERENCE The world demand for tunneling (the term tunneling is used here loosely to include almost all forms of underground excavation) is expected to grow at an in- creasing rate. During the decade of the ?70's, the demand is expected to at least double by comparison with the previous decade. Much of this increase in demand will be due to the rapid growth of urbanization around the world. As urban populations grow larger and denser, the conservation of surface land and the quality of the environment become more important. This aspect of the increasing demand poses a difficult challenge to those who must plan and implement urban development.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. "In order to extract proportionately small quantities of valuable minerals, mining companies move large amounts of earth. A resulting waste product of this process has traditionally been stored in a semi-liquid phase known as tailings, typically stored in a large pond created by an earthen dam at the low end of a drainage basin. It is generally expected that these dams are stable enough to withstand the pressure of the stored material. Unfortunately, history shows us that this is not always the case. The Baia Mare dam in Romania failed in 2000, causing tragic and prolonged environmental damage to several major European rivers. The Bento Rodrigues dam in Brazil failed on Nov. 5, 2015, and that event resulted in the loss of 16 lives.In hard rock mining, many minerals are imbedded within the ore. As part of the mining process, valuable minerals are extracted from the ore; often, the mineral content is only a fraction of the total ore volume processed. To extract the minerals, the ore is typically crushed and pulverized into very fine particles, then wetted to form slurries. The minerals are extracted from the slurries through a series of flotation and/or sedimentation steps with the aid of water-soluble separation chemicals typically known as reagents. Following the mineral extraction, the resulting residual wetted ore cuttings are labeled as tailings. At the end of the extraction process, the tailings are in a thick semi-fluid sludge state, often with trace elements of the extraction reagents.Historically, these tailings are deposited in giant basins or sludge ponds, where they pose a great threat to the environment while binding large volumes of waste process water.Process water recovery and achievingdry tailingsCurrent generation engineering studies, trials and successful field implementation have shown that an alternate process known as dry stacking is practical. The dry stacking process deposits dewatered tailings into containment areas that are smaller in overall footprint and significantly safer by reducing the transfer of reagents into the tailings storage area. In addition to achieving the dry tailing benefits mentioned, it is possible to recover valuable process water while dewatering the tailings sludge utilizing modern separation technology."
