The 112th Annual National Western Mining Conference (NWMC) hosted by the Colorado Mining Association (CMA) drew some political heavyweights, if by voice only, into the fray of two of the hottest topics that the mining industry is currently facing ? climate change and the new energy economy. A changing political landscape in Colorado, as well as in Washington D.C., has given rise to questions about the economic future of the United States and the mining industry?s role in that future. While there has been a recent push away from traditional energy sources to a ?new energy economy? that is rich in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, the NWMC?s agenda emphasized the role that minerals will play in new energy technologies. The conference was also full of talks about the industry?s role in reducing the United States? reliance on foreign oil and other mineral commodities. To that end, an impressive lineup of speakers were invited to attend the three-day conference Feb. 8-11, in Denver, CO. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans and three of the four headliners, including Denver?s mayor and Democratic candidate for governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, were unable to get to the conference because of a massive blizzard on the East Coast locked them in Washington, D.C. However, with modern technology, a full auditorium heard presentations from Hickenlooper, National Mining Association (NMA) president and chief executive officer Hal Quinn and Glenn Kelly, vice president, government affairs for NMA. Republican candidate for governor of Colorado, Scott McInnis, did speak to the crowd in person.

INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the Silver Line upon completion of the Phase III project.

Silver, copper, and zinc are commonly known elements with antibacterial and antifungal capabilities. Attempts have been made to dope silver on minerals, glass, and ceramics and the resulting materials have been investigated for their antibacterial and antifungal properties. Since silver is expensive and very reactive, silver doped materials have been found inappropriate in some applications. Copper-vermiculite is investigated as an alternative. Vermiculite has high cation exchange capacity on the magnesium ion in the crystal structure. Copper ion may have a high tendency to replace magnesium because of similar charge interference and ionic radius. Copper-vermiculite is prepared by reacting vermiculite and copper chloride solution. By impregnating copper ions into the nanometer openings between the layers of vermiculite, it is possible to render the composite with antibacterial functions if the copper ions could be released gradually from the composite. The antibacterial efficiency of Cu-vermiculite against Escherichia coli was studied using the Halo method. The results show that Cu-vermiculite is effective for preventing the reproduction of the bacteria. Heat treatment of Cu-vermiculite at up to 400°C does not show significant changes in antibacterial activities.

"Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71% - as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications. Especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material. In order to apply this principle of simplification we will take a look at the components of a conventional drive system consisting of: - Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump…) - Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear / pinion) - The electric motor - Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch…), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage - Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation - The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment) Intermediate gearboxes are not required when a motor is used with a rated speed that directly matches the speed requirement of the driven equipment. Furthermore the VSD can be used to smoothly start the motor and to vary speed during operation, which means that it satisfies both requirements."

Any mining or engineering-construction excavation that extends below the water table must be dewatered. In many situations, the ground is of low permeability or the workings extend only a short distance below the water table. So water removal can be handled easily and economically by using mobile centrifugal pumps. However, there is an increasing number of mines that have a continuous high flow of water into the workings. Controlling this flow can significantly increase the cost of ore production. Successful implementation of any major dewatering scheme will ultimately rely on a clear understanding of the local geology. This understanding is necessary before an interpretation of ground water conditions can be made. It will dictate which dewatering methods are feasible. Once the geology and the ground water system are known, the scope and timing of the dewatering measures can be varied with the mine plan. Ground water modeling can assist in optimizing the dewatering system, though the precise objective of each model should be clearly defined. Production wells must be sited and drilled so that individual well efficiencies are high. Any lost efficiencies will translate into higher operating costs. Each well must be designed for maximum long-term control of the water table, and pumps sized to operate under continually changing heads. Finally, the investment in each production well must be protected during the mining process.

Development of a three-dimensional mine visualization model for a section of the mine is addressed first. Discontinuity orientation and location information was taken from this visualization model for use in slope stability analyses. Estimated shear strength properties of discontinuities and mechanical properties of intact rock from the rock mass samples obtained from the mine are discussed next. The paper is then focused on the calculated maximum safe slope angles based on the performed kinematic and block theory analyses using the mapped discontinuities at the mine. Finally, the effects of water that exist in the rock mass, tension cracks, slope face inclination, overall wedge height and double benching on factor of safety of wedge stability are illustrated through limit equilibrium slope stability analyses.

"The Vietnamese economic growth of more than 5% per year leads this country to an enormous demand for raw materials. In the duration of ongoing expansion, the big challenge in the coming decades will be to make this process as sustainable as possible when it comes to economic, environmental and social objectives. Risk management especially in occupational safety and health (OSH) in enterprises is one of the most important tools to achieve this aim. But until now, this has not been taken into priority by Vietnamese coal mining enterprises. Main reasons for this situation can be found in deficient legislative conditions and in non-synchronized risk management systems. In contrast, Germany has implemented an adequate legal system and the German mining industry has gained lots of experiences in risk management, especially in occupational safety and health. This paper seeks to point out specific challenges how to improve occupational safety and health in Vietnam by transferring and applying German methods and standards."

New Gold?s New Afton Mine, located 8 km (5 miles) west of Kamloops, British Columbia, is a 4.5-Mt/a (5-million stpy) block cave mine, making it the highest tonnage underground hard rock mine in Canada. The reserve is estimated at 52.5 Mt (55.9 million st) with grades of 0.65 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.93 percent copper (2012). Commercial production was achieved in July 2012 and nameplate production was achieved ahead of schedule in September 2012, with the cave breaching to surface in 2013. The mill has a SAG and a ball mill with a froth flotation circuit.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer, was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

Zarshuran gold deposit, with the total reserves of some 12.5 million tons of 4.18 g/ton ore, is considered to be an important gold mining project in the area. In this paper the feasibility studies of the whole project is carried out on the basis of several economic variables. Given that mining data are often of uncertain nature, these economic variables have therefore been estimated under the conditions of uncertainty. The resultant Net Present Value is hence also obtained under the same conditions. For this purpose, a model is first devised with the help of Excel and COMFAR software. The model is then developed that considers different scenarios which would result in different expected values for the economic variables. It is concluded that the NPV of the project is most sensitive to gold and silver price and that other variables such as discount rate, operating and capital cost all affect the feasibility of the project with lower degree of severity. Finally, risk analysis is also carried out using Mont Carlo technique, in order to estimate the most probable value of NPV. The average NPV calculated in this way is US$ 49.7 Million, whilst without due consideration of risk, this would be US$ 36.6 Million. The techniques used, together with the procedures adopted in this paper, can be used in feasibility studies of all mining projects. Such decision would result in more accurate Net Present Values than expected from other frequently used methods.

"Within the energy concept of the German government, the operating time of nuclear power plants was initially extended from about 8 to 14 years. It is planned, however, that every power plant will gradually be decommissioned until 2025 and that simultaneously the amount of renewable energies will successively be expanded. According to the political state, nuclear energy is a discontinued model. Looking at the global energy market, though, an obviously opposed development can be observed. At the moment, 443 nuclear power plants are running worldwide and further 62 facilities are being built. These about 500 nuclear power stations have to be supplied with nuclear fuel right now and in the future. The present paper will describe the worldwide use of nuclear energy, the extraction of the nuclear fuel uranium and in detail the available and predicted resources of uranium. The conclusion of the paper is the statement that uranium as nuclear fuel is no scarce resource but sufficiently available."

Decisions made during a response to a mine fire or an explosion greatly affect the final outcome. The safety of miners should be the primary concern with accounting for all of the miners the first issue for resolution. If miners have not safely evacuated from the mine, the last known location of the miners at the time of the event and anticipated travel routes are primary exploration areas. After the mine is evacuated, there are many very important decisions that must be made quickly and often under great stress. It is critical that the mine operator establish an orderly method to direct the mine emergency response. Designation of a Command Center, staffed with personnel charged with developing plans, is a common method of establishing control. Scheduling of key mine managers will be critical, since decisions must be made 24 hours a day and people working for extended periods with little or no sleep do not always make clear or cognizant decisions. Internal communications, passing information on to subsequent shifts, and external communications with families and media must be accurate and timely. Assembling resources for responding to the mine emergency is critical for an effective response, and pre-planning can pave the way to a successful recovery. Sampling mine gasses and accurately determining the composition of gas mixtures is a common tool used to develop response plans in all fires and explosions. It is essential that preparations for emergency situations are made well in advance of a disaster. Effective communications are essential for mine management to successfully respond to a mine emergency. This paper discusses some considerations which need to be addressed in directing a response to a mine fire or explosion.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft 3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunnelling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-ft) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. An extensive and essential pre-excavation drilling and grouting program was performed in all reaches of the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, located north of San Bernardino, CA. This program supported the advance of two hybrid hard rock TBMs though extremely challenging ground conditions under substantial ground cover and up to 27 bar (900 ft) of ground water pressure. The well known San Andreas Fault lies nearby and has greatly influenced the local geological conditions. This paper will describe the means, methods and materials used throughout the numerous phases of the pre-excavation grouting program. It will also describe many versatile, flexible and innovative drilling and grouting methods and equipment systems utilized to improve performance, save time and costs in constantly changing geological conditions. Considerable lessons learned have been learned while overcoming some extremely formidable ground conditions and safely advancing the tunnels.

Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) recently acquired a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with a JKMRC/FEI Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). With the MLA software package, raw particle image and X-ray data can be converted into particle mineral maps and bulk and liberation data can then be calculated for minerals of interest. This type of quantitative mineralogical data can then be used for a wide variety of applications. Ore characterization with MLA can be carried out for existing or processing plants in development. MLA characterization of laboratory test products provides valuable liberation information that assists the research metallurgist in better planning and developing process treatment options for various ore types. This paper describes the use of MLA characterization in a copper flotation test program where the use of various testing options for arsenic depression was being evaluated.

Mediterranean regions such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Corsica and New Caledonia have experienced epidemics of malignant mesothelioma as a result of non-occupational, ??domestic?? exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite. This exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite is typified ??domestic?? due to its prevalence in regions with natural deposits of tremolite asbestos (or fibrous erionite) where the material from tremolite asbestos or fibrous erionite is used for domestic applications such as whitewashing. However, these exposures may be useful in examining the potential consequences of even small amounts of amphibole asbestos fibers in the ambient air. It can also elucidate the effects of fibers that behave like amphibole asbestos. However, this type of exposure is not useful for studying the potential effects of small amounts of asbestos in the ambient air of big cities due to the differing nature of the fiber types and modes of exposure between the regions. © 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

This paper aims to assess the current and future role of coal in energy strategy of Turkey and evaluates the compatibility of the policies to the EU energy policy and strategy. The Turkish government set targets to utilize more coal reserves of the country in next decades. However, the country is also in the process of becoming an EU Member State, hence, it is expected that the energy policies have to comply with the EU. Moreover, Turkey ratified Kyoto Protocol, thus the country should limit greenhouse gas emissions. Clean Coal, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies are expected to become an important instrument for the mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. An alternative technique to the conventional CCS methods is CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation. Turkey has significant resources of magnesium silicate minerals (olivine, serpentine) deposits which can be utilised in CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation method.

INTRODUCTION This report describes the inspection of parts of the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA)undertaken for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP)by Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc., (PB) in association with Montgomery Watson Engineers of New York, P.C. (MWH). Support for the inspection was provided by AFC Enterprises, Inc., under Construction Contract CRO-333, “WM-11 New Croton Aqueduct Rehabilitation and Inspection Program.” The scope of the inspection work under CRO-333 included assessing the condition of the 10.3 km (6.4 mile) long, pressurized section of NCA and inspection of shafts, head houses and blow-off structures in both the pressurized and gravity sections. The CRO-333 inspection continued investigation work begun under ContractCRO-196, which ran from 1993 to 1997. The CRO-333 inspections were conducted from November 2004 to September 2005. Background The New Croton Aqueduct was put into service in 1891 to deliver water from the Croton River Watershed in Westchester County to consumers in New York City. Figure 1 shows the location plan of Croton Water Supply System. The design flow into Jerome Park Reservoir was 12.7 m3/s (290 mgd) and into the135th Street Gate House, further south, was 10.9 m3/s (250 mgd). The NCA has been operated as a gravity conduit from Croton Lake to Gate House No. 1, just north of Jerome Park Reservoir, since its original construction. The length from Gate House No. 1to 135th Street, which includes a major siphon under the Harlem River, has been operated under pressure. Croton Lake gate house, the north end of the alignment lies at Station 4+75; Shaft 33, the south end of the alignment lies at Station 1628+05. The diameter of the tunnel is 3.2 m (10.5 ft) in the siphon and 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in the Bronx and Manhattan sections. The pressurized sections, constructed in rock, consist of a brick lining surrounded by a mortared and grouted rubble backing. Figure 2depicts a typical tunnel cross section. The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk either at concentrator commissioning, or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-Confidence Flotation Testing was developed for this purpose, and is part of the list of technologies of various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of practice and continuous improvement with this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to this method and complementary connections into sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. Further work to improve the efficiency of this procedure has been identified.
