The regional geological setting and nature of the serpentinized ultramafic rocks are described. It is postulated that lateritization started in Miocene time. Repeated uplifts led to at least four physiographic cycles and to the development of a mature lateritic soil profile. Complete profiles are subdivided from top to bottom as follows: Zone A - chocolate-brown limonite; Zone B - ochre-brown limonite; Zone C - soft serpentine; Zone D - hard serpentine; Zone E - serpentinized peridotite; Zone F - ultramafic rock. Zones A and F rarely attain ore grade. Canga is conspicuously absent. Rocky ore of Zones D and E amounts to 40%, limonite ore of Zone B to 25% of total ore reserves. Nickeliferous serpentine is the major crystalline phase in Zone C. In this zone and deeper, crystalline quartz occurs, particularly in fracture zones where nickeliferous cryptocrystalline quartz is of ten accompanied by garnierite.

he Broken Aro coal mine is located at the Woodbury Wildlife Preserve 11 km (7 miles) west of Coshocton, OH on State Route 541. Underground min¬ing at the 16-hm2 (40-acre) site took place during the 1910s. During the past five years, surface mining has occurred along the western and northern perimeters of the underground region. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), R&F Coal and American Electric Power (AEP) are involved in a project to remine the abandoned underground complex. The program also includes installing a mine seal made of fixated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material. Previous mining activity in this area has resulted in an acid mine drainage (AMD) problem on portions of the reserve. In particular, a prominent AMD source is present in the Simmons Run drainage. The project goal is to eliminate or reduce the AMD that is discharging into the watershed. It was initially hoped that the Simmons Run drainage area could be economically mined. Accordingly, this area was included in the mine permit. However, experience with other previously mined areas on this reserve showed that the old mine workings were more extensive than originally thought. Old mine workings present several problems. The most significant are reduced coal recovery, poor coal quality and AMD liability. All of these problems increase mining costs. And the more extensive the old workings, the more significant the increase in cost. Based on R&F's experience with old mine workings in this area, it was decided that economic recovery of the Simmons Run drainage reserve was not possible. As a result, R&F excluded the Simmons Run drainage area from its early mine plans. Some time after it was decided not to affect the Simmons Run drainage area, R&F and ODNR's Division of Mining and Reclamation discussed the possibility of removing this area from the permit and attempting to correct the AMD problem as an Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) project. Specifically, the discussion centered around mining through a portion of the old mine workings to expose the mine openings in the highwall. Once exposed, the mine openings would be sealed using FGD material from the nearby Conesville power plant operated by AEP. In addition, there was interest in reclaiming the old tipple and associated gob pile located adjacent to Coshocton County Road 17 on the opposite side of Simmons Run. R&F attempted to eliminate the AMD problem by sealing the mine openings with FGD material. Once the seals were installed, they were covered with overburden. Monitoring wells were installed to determine the effectiveness of the seal and the inundation progress in the old mine workings as well as monitoring the quality of ground water. The project was jointly funded by revenue from the sale of the coal recovered during the project and AML funds. The FGD seal is expected to cause well water levels to increase above preseal elevations. However, the additional head pressure due to increased water depths in the underground mine may cause seepage through the bottom of the mine or out through the perimeter. The in¬creased water depth in the underground mine is expected to cause lower oxygen concentrations in the underground mine water. Since acidity is produced by oxidation of iron pyrites, less oxygen should result in better quality water. Monitoring wells will be installed before seal installation so that pre- and postseal water levels and well water quality can be determined. Surface sampling locations will be identified. These will be monitored before and after seal placement.

The flotation of sylvite and also some accessory minerals is performed in brines containing very high electrolyte concentrations. Under these circumstances the mechanims of collector adsorption exhibit some characteristics which will be discussed by significant examples: - flotation separation of sylvite and halite with n-alkylammonium salts and n-alkyl sulfates - flotation separation of kieserite and anhydrite with acylamino carboxylic acids - flotation of halite by collectors which are adsorbed by hydrogen bond formation.

Locating and defining an ore body with minerals or metals that can be recovered at a profit is the objective of minerals exploration. Direct exploration involves examining and sampling rocks either in outcrop, underground exposure, drill core, or cuttings. Indirect exploration infers the measurement of some physical, chemical, or biological factor that reflects the possible presence of the metal or mineral of interest, or a structure that may act to collect, concentrate, or otherwise favor the presence of the desired commodity. Included here are all forms of geophysical, geochemical, or geotech-nical prospecting. In recent years, indirect exploration has given rise to an impressive number of specialists and a variety of techniques. Less impressive is the success rate or productivity of the modern explorationist. Exploration Productivity Losing Ground Judging from the low number of mine openings or mine discoveries in recent years, the exploration industry is not as productive as it once was. Many will take umbrage at this judgment, but a review of the literature will support this statement. In Canada, from 1951 through 1960, there was an average of 5.6 discoveries a year. From 1961 through 1976 there were only four a year. This nearly 30% reduction occurred despite a massive increase in exploration funding. From 1950 to 1955, the Canadian mining industry spent $5 million (1975 dollars) for each minable deposit found. During the period 1970 to 1975, the cost was $25 million for each one found. The industry was spending five times as much and finding 30% less than a generation earlier. This is not indicative of a productive endeavor. The loss in productivity is even more apparent to explorationists who wander the western US, and are awed by the thoroughness and discovery rate of those early prospectors who explored from 1850-1920. The "old-timers" missed very little. They used pans and crude chemical tests in place of plasma or X-ray fluorescent assay techniques. But, they found ore bodies that led to mines. Today, the best prospecting areas are pockmarked by the hand dug pits, trenches, and shafts left by our predecessors. The success or productivity of the old-timers may be attributed to any or all of several factors. Granted, they were looking at virgin ground and at deposits that in many places were exposed. The factor most critical is, however, that they employed direct exploration methods. They walked over areas of interest, traversed swamps and mountains, and followed "colors" in stream gravels to their source. They also chipped rocks, dug pits, trenched along structures, and followed the "leads." Many of today's explorationists, on the other hand, adopt a more sophisticated approach. A geologic model is conjured up so the exploration team "knows" models, but the model should be applied at a later stage in the exploration effort. J. D. Ridge has written an excellent article on the role and timing of models. Geologists should collect and assemble data, facts, and observations and fit these into a model and not conceive a model and seek data to prove their vision. Further, many exploration managers are adept and talented at devising exploration programs. They can program and use modern exploration techniques and tools. They can apply these and their modeling capacity to assemble a glittering array of targets. It would appear that in all too many instances, creating targets has been equated with and is considered being productive. As noted, finding ore bodies is being productive in exploration. Creating targets may or may not lead to ore bodies. As an end result, locating targets is not productive exploration. How then does one foster productivity in exploration? Some suggestions are to increase the use of direct methods, follow the methods and philosophies of old-timers, look at more rocks, do more field work, use foot traverses, and do more drilling. It may be argued that this is what the old-timers have done and we would then be hoping to find

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco's first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is segregated and stockpiled as it is encountered during mining. This report focuses on minimum ore block sizes that are economically feasible to mine with the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method. In 1985, Homestake Mining Co. began a program to bring several small block VCR stopes on line. This report examines these experimental stopes, including design parameters, ground control, drill patterns, secondary blasting, and mucking. Cost and scheduling comparisons are made with mechanized cut-and-fill and open cut- and-fill methods.

In grinding-classification circuit, overgrinding, resulted from the fact that hydrophobic materials have higher density than hydrophilicmaterials, has been known as a knotty problem. By using of the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) as classifier, in this pair, the overgrinding of hydrophobic materials has been successfully minimized. Compared with the conventional hydrocyclones, the ASH has less fine hydrophobic particles in the underflow and less large particles in the overflow, which shows that the recovery of fine hydrophobic particles in the overflow has been improved in the ASH.

Magnesite, brucite and dolomite occur widely throughout Canada, but deposits of economic significance are found only in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. Magnesite occurs in all three provinces, brucite in Quebec and Ontario and dolomite in Ontario. Beneficiation of refractory magnesium minerals has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET and the former Mines Branch. Twenty-three magnesite, four brucite and nine dolomite evaluation studies were conducted between 1920 and 1974. A review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information includes mineralogy, beneficiation methods and flotation data.

Great Salt Lake Minerals (GSLM) uses flotation to utilize low grade harvest evaporites in the leaching/ crystallization process. A final potash product coloration problems was encountered that was attributed to AERO• 801s promoter - magnesium ion precipitation in flotation which carried into the dissolution/crystallization circuit. Bench studies resulted in changing 801s to 845 which provided acceptable product brightnesses and higher flotation potassium recoveries. This is a case history reviewing the unique GSLM processing scheme, the bench and plant work identifying the potash quality problem, the bench work and solution, and subsequent process study and circuit optimization efforts.

The designing aspects of column profile, cross-section and height, types of aerator or air sparger, and feeding and discharging devices have been designed and tested. In operating aspects, the flotation column: has beer, compared with the conventional mechanical flotation machine in large- scale plant practice. It has been found that the reagent conditioning time and the slurry residence time required in the column are longer than those in the mechanical flotation machine. The general opinion is that the flotation column can show some effectiveness in specific cases as long as it is properly designed and carefully controlled.

Preliminary results of a mineralogical, geo-chemical and nutrient analysis of soil samples collected from Omalos polje-plateau are presented. This study is part of a project concerning the relationship of lithology and mineralogy characteristics of soils of different geological origin from the island of Crete with their chemical composition, and more specifically with their ionic nutrients content. The results presented in this work show a relatively good correlation of the mineralogy and the bulk content of the soils examined with the available nutrients in soil solution.

Where difficult shaft sinking conditions exist, it may be appropriate to use a blind drilling technique. The success of the method is in part due to the presence of a drilling mud which fills the shaft void during excavation. The mud performs two important functions with respect to shaft stability: it reduces the influence of groundwater; and, due to the mud weight, gives a positive sup- port to the shaft walls. The application of the method is illustrated by a case history which traces the development of a shaft from the initial investigation to determine the shaft location, through the evaluation of wall stability and mud requirements, to the shaft sinking contract and actual conditions encountered.

Pelletization, sintering, and pressure compaction are the most common methods used to agglomerate ore concentrates. Over the last 20 years agglomeration has grown enormously in popularity and has become a standard unit operation in the nonferrous, cement, fertilizer, and ceramic industries. However, it is in the processing of iron ores and the preparation of blast furnace feed that agglomeration is used most and its application has grown fastest (Ball, et al., 1973; and Sastry, 1977). This chapter deals with an account of the current practices and future trends in the application of computers relative to an overview of the process design and engineering considerations of the unit operation of agglomeration.

Steady-state simulation is now in current use to assist mineral processing plant design and optimization. However, the reliability of results generated by simulators has not until now been seriously investigated. A simulator supervision algorithm was designed and programmed to study both the influence of the reliability of experimental data on the accuracy of unit operation model calibration, and the influence of unit operation model accuracy on the results of direct plant simulations. An application to a grinding flotation plant is described and discussed. The approach may open the way to the quantitative analysis of the risks taken in mineral processing projects, which would be similar to the application of geostatistics to mining projects.

The effect of particle size on the flotation of coarse particles is analyzed. It is concluded that turbulence and the presence of the froth layer are detrimental to the recovery of coarse particles during conventional flotation. A counter-current column cell is proposed to avoid these two factors. In this column, a net upwards flow of water is prevalent, such that no froth is allowed to form on the top. Also, the levitation of heavy bubble-particle aggregates is helped by the ascending water current. Preliminary work at laboratory level with kilogram-size samples indicated that under similar conditions recoveries in the column were much higher than in conventional cells. Flotation results obtained with coarsely sized phosphate and quartz samples are presented. One interesting feature of this type of column is very fast flotation kinetics. Thus, a short column (only 55-cm collection zone) yielded, full recovery of floatable values.

This paper reports on recently completed research that investigated the health fabric of mining communities in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The project, funded by two national funding agencies and the BC Government, and supported by numerous provincial organizations, marked a collaboration between mining engineering and health researchers. The study employed mixed-methods. First, a quantitative phase merged census, mining industry and health data to investigate the relationship between declining economic conditions and health outcomes (mental illness and stress-mediated cardiovascular disease). Second, a qualitative phase investigated community health issues associated with the mining boom-bust cycle from the perspective of health and social service providers working in a northern BC coal mining community. Third health research findings were disseminated to potential knowledge users in the hope of enhancing mine impact assessing and integrated mine planning. The paper provides a synthesis of the research methods used in this project, and highlights the main indicators used and key findings. It concludes by identifying recommendations, and future research needs considered to be of particular importance to the health and sustainability of mining communities in BC, Canada and around the globe.

A number of studies have attempted to correlate the semiconducting properties of mineral sulfides with their chemical reactivity. Frequently such studies are conducted on polished or abraded electrodes. Defects produced by abrasion may mask the influence of the semiconducting properties of electrodes, e.g., by pinning the Fermi level at the surface or by reducing the lifetimes of photogenerated charge carriers. It is shown that pyrite and galena electrodes have photocurrents that are extremely sensitive to abrasion of the electrodes. On freshly fractured galena surfaces, the space charge layer is readily polarized. Wet-abrasion is shown to produce a relatively thick ptype layer on galena electrodes and this p-type layer has a pronounced effect on the photoresponse. On freshly fractured pyrite surfaces, the Fermi level at the surface is pinned by a surface state. Wet-polishing reduces the magnitude of the photocurrent by over an order of magnitude.

A prolonged grinding of sulphide ores in steel mills appears harmful to flotation recovery and selectivity whenever xanthates are used as collectors. Particles finer than about 10um show a pronounced decrease in floatability. A supposition was made that the cause of the reduction in floatability of ground sulphides is the presence of metallic iron abraded during grinding and deposited on the ground particles. Electro- chemical measurements were made of mixed potentials developed by different sulphide-mineral electrodes (galena, chalcopyrite, pyrite, marmatite, pyrrhotite) in xanthate solutions, without a direct con- tact or in contact with a metallic iron electrode. These measurements showed that without a galvanic contact between the sulphide and the iron, the values of mixed potentials were in the vicinity of the xanthate/dixanthogen redax potential. When contact with iron was established, the mixed potentials shifted towards the more negative reducing or cathodic values, The shift was greater the higher was the ratio of the surface areas: iron electrode to sulphide electrode. Further, the shift in mixed potentials was greater the more reducing were the conditions on the sulphide electrode. Chemical analysis of reaction products produced on the surfaces of sulphides and in the bulk solution showed that less thiosulphate was formed in all of the sulphide-xanthate systems and that more elemental sulphur was detect-
