INTRODUCTION In the region of Zurich several of the Swiss Interstate Highways meet and have to be linked to form a continuous network. The subalpine glacial topography with hills, ridges and lakes requires the construction of many tunnels (Figure 1). The Milchbuck Tunnel forms part of the inner arterial highway system of the city of Zurich. It passes underneath the ridge separating the Limmat and Glatt valleys. In its final configuration the tunnel will consist of two parallel three-lane tunnels (Figure 2). For the time being only one tunnel is constructed. This tunnel will be operated with two outbound (climbing) lanes and a single inbound (descending) lane (Figure 3). The owner, the Canton of Zurich, awarded the contract for the construction to a joint venture with the following three contractors: Locher & Cie AG (leader), Prader AG, A. Brunner's Erben, all located in Zurich. The actual freezing was performed by subcontractor Philipp Holzmann AG, Mannheim, West Germany. Electrowatt Engineering Services Ltd, Zurich, was design engineer and performed the construction supervision.

Microtunneling has successfully completed both horizontal and vertical curves. This paper covers the historical development of curved microtunneling and a description of one microtunneling project. The completed microtunnel is used for electrical transmission in Japan. The crossing had several concerns including right of way, social disruption, obstructions, the cost of intermediate shafts, and political restrains. In order for this drive to meet all of the imposed restrictions, four horizontal curves and one vertical curve were planned and executed in accordance with the design. Iseki Poly-Tech of Tokyo, Japan designed and built the microtunneling machine to meet the project requirements. Curved microtunneling has been successfully used on fourteen projects in Japan. The reason for a curve has been that the project could not be rerouted, short straight drives could not be used to negotiate the curve, or the project’s social and environmental conditions required a curved tunnel. The following table (Table 1) includes summary information on 14 curved microtunnling projects that have been successfully completed in Japan. The first column is a reference number. Columns two through four include basic project information. The fifth column is the total project distance completed by microtunneling. The sixth column is the project’s microtunneling duration. The seventh column is the machine type and size. All of the machines listed are manufactured by Iseki Poly-Tech of Tokyo, Japan. The size is the internal concrete pipe diameter; all of the projects listed were completed with Japanese standard concrete pipe. The eighth column contains a general description of the soil. The soil type and blow counts are approximately equal to ASTM D 2487 standards. The ninth column lists the radius of the curve and the span distance or the distance microtunneled that included the curve. The radius of a vertical curve is denoted with a “VR”, a span with both a left and right hand curve is denoted with a “S”. Other significant first events are also noted in this column. The first curved microtunneling project was completed in 1982 using a conventional microtunneling machine with standard Japanese concrete pipe and a very long radius curve while maintaining grade for the gravity sewer. The second curved microtunneling project included multiple radii curves, all in the same direction, on a single drive. In 1989, on the fifth curved microtunneling project, a “S” curve was successfully negotiated. On the seventh curved microtunneling project, completed in1995, a tight radius curve was negotiated. In 1996, the eighth project included a vertical curve. The thirteenth curved microtunneling project, completed in 1997, was the first project to utilize a microtunneling machine specifically designed to negotiate curves. Pit and underground mine operators typically use a lot of big equipment tires. Just as typically, they spend a lot of money they shouldn't on these tires. That's because tire use and maintenance are not given enough attention. That often occurs because mine management and personnel do not know the basic facts of tire use and care. If a piece of large equipment is damaged or ruined, a good explanation better he forthcoming. A ruined tire is often just a shoulder shrug. But that sort of fatalistic acceptance can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year extra for big equipment tires. That does not have to be. There are some basic tire considerations that, if followed, will extend tire life and lower tire costs. Most companies have the inevitable conflict between the production department, which resists any restrictions that may reduce productivity, and the maintenance department. Production success is based on meeting a schedule of yards moved, while maintenance success is based on availability and equipment cost. When production falls behind schedule and equipment speeds are increased, maintenance may soon find its tire costs rapidly increasing, unless everyone understands the tires' vulnerability to damage. Unless the production department understands the problem, or restraint is applied by top management, costs may become exorbitant. At one job site, tire costs alone exceeded $250,000, to move 55 dam3 (72 000 yd3) of dirt on an 11-km cycle. The operation temporarily caught up with its schedule, but tire costs and attendant downtime soon made this a not-for-profit exercise. Because an operator must always attempt to move payload at the lowest cost, there are cases when higher than normal tire costs must be accepted. For example, in pioneering work with tandem engine scrapers, steep grades shorten tire life to less than normal. But the steep grades make shorter haul cycles possible, yielding more trips per hour than alternative earth-moving methods.

When John F. Kennedy made this statement, I am sure he was not thinking about the valuation of limestone reserves. However, it is certainly applicable. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the discomfort of thought (i.e., the analytical and methodical process performed by a reputable professional) builds the foundation for an opinion that provides assurance as to the value of a property. In its final form, a valuation is nothing more than an opinion. The credence of that opinion is directly proportional to the knowledge of the appraiser and the efforts and judgment extended in developing said opinion. Presented herein are the methodologies for formulating a defensible opinion. Before detailing the valuation process, an overview of the limestone industry is presented along with some historical parameters relating to the industry. Secondly, the most widely used valuation methodologies and a brief discussion of each are presented. Two case studies are then presented, which review actual valuation studies. The paper concludes with how the valuation process should be published in a report format that is defensible from a legal standpoint, bankable from a financial standpoint, and decipherable from a layman's standpoint.

Since the production prototype continuous vat leaching pilot plant was installed at Ariel Resources in Costa Rica in 1995, the test results and lessons learned have been invaluable in plotting the future of this method. Vigorous test programs in base and precious metals as well as design developments for studies have shown the advantages, economically, technically, and environmentally that favor this method over current practices in heap leaching and stirred tank leaching. Much larger individual vats have been developed with throughputs as high as 5000 t/d with larger vats envisaged, and there has been a trend towards using vats with ground ore. Five projects are slated to begin detailed engineering this year, three in precious metals and two in copper. Of particular interest to future producers is the ability to deposit d,y, detoxified tailings at a fraction of the cost of conventional methods. Proprieta,y work is ongoing which promises to eliminate the need for tailings dams when using other methods of processing such as flotation. This is of particular importance in light of dam failures around the world in recent years.

The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1994. According to US Bureau of Mines (USBM) estimates, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled about 1.05 Mt (1.15 million st), yielding 560 kt (617,000 st) of B203, for a total estimated value of $370 million. This production level was about 2% less than 1993 revised figures. The United States continued to provide nearly all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid for export. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products during 1994 was 900 people, about the same as in 1993. USBM estimated total world production of boron of about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st), yielding 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of B203. World production during 1994 was about the same as during 1993. USBM estimates US reserves to be about 210 Mt (231 million st) of ore and world reserves to be about 630 Mt (694 million st) of ore.

Hecla Mining's Lucky Friday Mine, located beneath the town of Mullan, ID, has been shaken since the 1960s by many deep underground rock bursts. The largest rock burst carried a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter Scale. It occurred in 1969 when all of the stopes on a level approached an upper level at the same elevation. After that, a stair-step pattern was used to give the mine's levels more of an "arch." The article is an account of one of the more ferocious bursts to hit the miners of the Lucky Friday. I say "miners" instead of "mine" because I was there and it was a very personal experience for me. I had been working at the Lucky Friday for six years. During that time, I had heard and felt thousands of air blasts. In fact, in the early spring of 1986, the mine was experiencing as many as 1000 air blasts an hour, of different intensi¬ties, of course. Most of them sounded like popcorn popping. There were also a few bumps and occasionally a real boomer. That day did not seem any different

The application of the Cyprus Cyanisorb process was investigated using a pilot scale facility at the NERCO DeLamar Silver Mine (DSM) in Owyhee County, Idaho. The purpose of this process is to remove cyanide from the DeLamar mill tailings slurry prior to its introduction to the tailings impoundment. This will maintain the tailings impoundment solution in a detoxified condition and thus prevent migratory bird mortalities. The cyanide removed is to be collected and recycled to the mill. The process successfully recovered approximately 90 percent of the weak acid dissociable cyanide (WAD), reducing the effluent tailings cyanide concentration from about 300 ppm to less than 20 ppm. This was accomplished by stripping the slurry with air in a packed tower and recovering the volatilized HCN in a packed absorption tower. Data were obtained for the design of the full scale facility including the stripping and absorption towers, currently under construction at the DeLamar Mine site. Finally, test results indicated that the final pH of reneutralization can be optimized to provide for minimal gold and silver losses, while selectively precipitating unwanted metal impurities (Zinc, Selenium, Iron, and Copper) from solution

The increasing global demand and lower price of gold has resulted in more advanced gold extraction techniques. One trend is the use of oxygen in place of air in the leaching process, which is proven to significantly enhance recovery of gold ore refractory in such techniques as CIP and CIL. This has resulted in a search for more reliable and cost efficient paradigms of oxygen supply. Many gold mines already realize the heightened recovery rate achieved with oxygen. Previously this benefit had only been available to the largest consumers of oxygen, near oxygen production facilities. Requirements of (1) to (20) metric tons per day have traditionally been supplied with expensive, delivered, liquid oxygen. Since many mines are located in remote areas, it is difficult to secure cost effective and continuous supply of liquid oxygen. However, the benefits of On-Site Oxygen Production combined with a self-generated bulk reserve supply are now available to mine sites. This paper explains and discusses the use of on site Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen production, coupled with a cryogenerator to liquefy oxygen for storage. This package offers continuous oxygen supply to mining sites in even the most remote corners of the world.

Concentrations of He, CO2, and O2 in soil gases were measured regularly for more than a year at a site near Golden, Colorado. Samples were collected from a hollow probe at 0.75-m depth and from a plastic hemisphere on the ground surface. Soil temperature, air temperature, percent humidity, And barometric pressure were also measured. Soil moisture was measured only indirectly as amount of rain or snowfall. Higher concentrations of CO2 in both the 0.75-m and surface samples correlated with higher soil and air temperatures, which suggests that CO2 was produced by bacteria. Lower concentrations of helium in both the 0.75-m and surface samples correlated with higher soil and air temperatures. Rain and snowfall appear to affect helium concentrations. Carbon dioxide concentrations were lowest when snow lay on the ground for extended periods of time. No correlation was seen between barometric pressure or percent humidity and concentrations of He, CO2, or O2 at 0.75-m depth or at the ground surface. No correlation, either positive or negative, was seen between concentrations of CO2 and O2.

The mining industry has seen a flurry of merger and acquisition activity of late. Rising metal prices, increased spending on infrastructure in developing nations and the growing demand for companies to diversify have helped fuel M&A activity in this industry. Many analysts believe that the robust M&A activity will continue, particularly if the demand for mineral resources in India and China remains strong. Because prospective purchasers need to evaluate the various risks confronting target companies, acquiring mining companies requires a considerable amount of due diligence. Of these risks, environmental risk is critical and warrants significant analysis. The failure to properly assess environmental risks associated with remediation, reclamation, compliance or litigation can undermine the transaction. Such assessment is a difficult endeavor, however, due to several challenges that companies face when assessing environmental risks. To make matters more complicated, despite these challenges, many sellers ask buyers to assume all environmental risks with limited post-closing indemnification rights. This article addresses the most significant issues that commonly arise when conducting environmental due diligence and allocating environmental risk in connection with M&A transactions in the mining industry.

In 1992, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to fund the reclamation of an abandoned placer mine. The project also included the development of a water-quality and hydrologic-monitoring program. The grant was provided under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act and is administered through EPA's Region X Water Division. For the past 100 years, Alaska's interior has been the site of extensive placer-mining operations. Early surface and underground operations left small tailings piles, some of which are still visible. Dredging left larger tailings piles, similar to those in California and elsewhere. The only reclamation of these tailings involved use as road base and fill and other civil applications. Most active mines in Alaska are on state and federal lands. The standards of reclamation for mines on federal lands are established under US Mining Laws, 43 CFR 3809. They address only mines operated since 1981. Under a state statute passed in 1990, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water and Mining, has issued reclamation regulations. These regulations apply to sites on state, federal and private lands, but only those mined since Oct. 15, 1991.

In preplanning the reclamation of a pit or quarry the geology of the site is the name of the game! The planner must know the parameters of the deposit, the quantity and kind of earth materials to be removed, and the amount and nature of the materials to be left behind or wasted as the result of processing the marketable product. With many states and most local jurisdictions requiring reclamation plans prior to the issuance of mining permits, the need for accurate and complete data concerning the geology of the site becomes increasingly important. The producer need only know that marketable materials are available in sufficient quantity to make the mining operation economically feasible-the planner, in order that the land may be reshaped for a useful purpose, must have reasonably precise information as to the dimensions and configurations of the pit or quarry following extraction and the amount and type of materials available on the site (or in some cases offsite as well). Therefore the geology of the site is of major significance in determining the land forms and use capabilities of the property upon completion of the mining process.
