Automatic digital phase imaging should yield unbiased and representative characterization of gold ores. However, this is not a simple task due to low gold grades, fine grain size, possible complex mineralogy, nugget effect, etc. A critical test was done by two methods, using the same sections of a gold-rich ore: with an optical (OM) and with an electron microscope (EM). In general, the two methods are consistent and useful for ore processing. There are some minor differences e.g. the detection of very fine gold grains is enhanced by EM.

Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here. Computer software for mining applications has been in development since before 1970. These packages cover tasks from exploration data management through final reclamation planning. These programs were originally written in Fortran and have evolved into colorful, user-friendly packages. Programs that produced printed symbol maps now show color, three-dimensional image of an ore deposit on a computer screen. Pictures can be rotated and looked at it from all directions and layers can be peeled off to show other parts of a model. Computer users have also evolved. In the early Fortran days, users had to learn computer operating systems, have someone punch data cards, set up run files and wait a day or so to find out if there was one little mistake somewhere that caused the program not to run. With today's technology, users sit at their desks in the office, key in some data, read other data from digital files and build a model within days, rather than weeks or months.

Williams Mine was considering spending a large amount of capital to install a pumping system underground to rid the mine of slimes; with the introduction of Delvo Stabilizer this challenge would be met. This paper will address the process to introducing the Delvo Technology into the Cemented Roddill Program. Some areas that were worked on included: testing of the mix design, bet dosage rate for an economical solution, temperatures at different levels of the mine, the amount of time needed once the grout was put to sleep, preventing plugs in the delivery system A controlled dosage that gave the Operator a 12 hour window of flowable material was developed and an added feature to the introduction of Delvo was also noted; an increase in MPa strength over the design. Collectively with the help of operators at the batch plant and the underground miners involved with the program all concerns where addressed and all goals met. A cost effective program was implemented thus increasing productivity, preventing costly plugs, and improved the actual maintenance on the entire delivery system, which included the batch tanks, aggitator tanks, all pumps required in the system and of course reducing buildup of slimes at the cones.

The biological removal of calcium from a bauxite ore in the presence of the soil bacterium Paenibacillus polymyxa is demonstrated. A column bioreactor that can be either operated in a fluidized-bed (FB) mode for coarser particles or in a total-recycle-slurry (TRS) mode for finer particles was designed, fabricated and tested for this purpose. For the efficient removal of calcium from the ore to the required levels, leach solution should not be allowed to accumulate in the reactor. Therefore, the solution needs to be drained out periodically. Cascade leaching was found to be more effi¬cient. A direct correlation between pH changes in the leach solution and calcium solubility could be made. More than 85% of the calcium could be removed through cascade leaching.

The mechanical mining of coal seams where roof, partings, and floor rock are extracted along with the coal often introduces large numbers of quartz particles into the mine atmosphere. This study concentrates on the quartz properties in situ and in the airborne dust to determine how they are released from the source rock and whether they are fractured by the mining machinery. Three mines using drum-type continuous miners from different geographic areas were sampled to provide a data base. The roof and floor rocks were primarily siltstones containing 5% to 25% quartz measured by the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) method. Much of the work presented here is based on the morphologies of the mineral grains determined by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The study concentrated on particles of 0.2 to 10.0 µm and on particles containing > 75% Si. Mechanically-crushed quartz particles were also examined for comparison purposes. Particle shapes from the airborne samples suggested that fractured quartz particles were rare. Particle statistics also show that the average size of quartz particles in the airborne samples were similar to the average size of all particles. The conclusion is that very few quartz particles from the source rocks are fractured during mining due to their small initial size and the protection of the associated clays.

Slope design in an open pit mine includes the determination of a number of parameters, including bench height, bench face angle and berm width. By way of a case history of two highwall slopes (160m and 220m high) excavated in dipping strata in an operating coal mine, this paper illustrates the influence that bench face angle can have on the stability of an entire slope. The two highwall slopes, the lower of which experienced significant instability, were excavated in essentially the same lithologic and structural environment, with the main differences between the slopes being the angle at which the bench faces were excavated and the excavating methods that were employed. In addition to describing the instability that occurred on one of the pit walls, relevant aspects of the engineering geology, slope design and excavation procedures are described.

The feasibility evaluation of the Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corporation (HIMCO) was initiated in October of 1980. The operation of the Borealis Mine and heap leaching plant began in late 1981. In order to achieve the rapid development schedule several items were necessary: 1) Pre-planning of environmental requirements and early study of key issues. 2) Adoption of conservative design criteria. 3) Coordination and cooperation between HIMCO and regulatory agencies. 4) Adoption of specialized engineering and construction procedures. 5) Careful evaluation of owner project management philosophy.

With continuing pressure from stockholders not only to maintain but to increase mineral revenues, producers have increased plant capacity. Depressed mineral prices have accentuated the trend toward higher production rates to maintain consistent cash flow, and these same trends have promoted the development of large-scale processing equipment. In addition to the need to handle increased throughput, larger flotation equipment can result in decreased capital-equipment and operating costs. The development of larger column and conventional flotation equipment relies, in part, on suitable scale-up procedures. To properly scale-up large flotation cells and columns, certain constraints and design parameters must be taken into consideration, including velocities in the vessel, residence time, solids suspension, and lip loading. This paper will review the design constraints and scale-up criteria for WEMCO® flotation cells. Scale-up criteria are augmented with computational-fluid- dynamics analyses and high-speed imaging techniques, as well as multiple regresesion analysis of in-plant operational data.

Explanations for commodity price levels (or movements) commonly focus on the fundamentals of supply and demand, otherwise they are simply assigned to speculative activity. Comparisons of metal-price histories to monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in the determination of price than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and they are consistent with monetary theory. The patterns developed have limited usefulness as predictors, but their recognition is essential for the construction of price scenarios for planning purposes.

Observations of the land surface show that subsidence over active and abandoned underground mines is controlled to some extent by the stratigraphic and structural geology of the mines in addition to the methods of mining and the thickness of the seam mined. Exposures in highwalls of surface mines that intersect abandoned underground mines in the Warrior coal basin of Alabama illustrate this, showing sandstone beds that act as beams bridging openings and interbedded shale beds crumbling. Stratigraphic changes observed in the district are extremely variable and calculations regarding subsidence used for one area will not apply to another area if there is a major change in rock types Rocks exposed in road cuts and open pit mines demonstrate a marked difference in weathering characteristics. Some rocks, such as shale, wea- ther very rapidly, by crumbling and becoming plastic, whereas other rocks, such as sandstone, resist weathering. The continuing rock weathering after mining in openings produced by the mining activity and in fractures caused by roof movement, apparently, is a major cause of the surface sub- sidence that may occur years after the mines are abandoned.

The objective of this study is to classify ore and waste in a selected mine. The support vector machine, was used for the classification purpose, is applied to a zinc ore body in a skarn deposit located in the central region of the Peruvian Andes. The input parameters used for the model are spatial coordinates and the lithological information of the ore body. The input data was divided into training and testing data sets and the performance of the model was tested using the testing data set. The results show that more than 76% of the data could be properly classified by this method. The ore waste maps of the deposit was then developed using SVM model. From the result it was observed that a comparatively very few number of cells classified as ore. The ore is concentrated in small lodes at the middle of the volume of study, and not uniformly distributed throughout the study area. The lithological map of the deposit was also constructed as it was used as an input parameter for the SVM model. The indicator kriging was used for generation of lithological map of the ore body. A large number of minerals and chemicals (Table 1), some mineral-derived, are used in the treatment of both potable water and domestic sewage waste water and solids (Anon., 1990). In water treatment there are ten principal process uses as shown in Table 2 (Anon., 1990), which also lists the major chemicals in each process. Since lime (calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, and dolomitic lime) is the largest chemical (by tonnage) used in water treatment, this chapter will deal primarily with this product. Note that it is included in five of the process uses shown in Table 2, and that indirectly it is also used in at least one other category (taste and odor control, where lime is used with potassium permanganate to provide optimum pH condition). POTABLE WATER TREATMENT Water Softening The biggest use for lime in water treatment involves water softening, where it serves to reduce carbonate hardness caused by dissolved bicarbonate and carbonate compounds. Currently there are more than 1000 domestic water softening plants (Table 3) located in most sections of the country, but particularly in Ohio, other midwestern states, Florida, and Texas, where limestone bedrock abounds (Anon., 1990). Among the other uses for lime in water treatment are coagulation, disinfection, and removal of heavy metals due to high pH softening, removal of certain radioactive and organic compounds and fluorides, neutralization of acidic water, removal of silica, particularly with dolomitic lime, and removal of color. Most of the above advantages accompany water softening, although at some plants lime is used specifically for one purpose, such as silica removal with dolomitic lime, minimizing pipeline corrosion by addition of lime to correct an aggressive water, and others. Hardness in water comprises two types - carbonate hardness, caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates and bi- carbonates, and non-carbonate hardness caused by dissolved non- carbonate salts, particularly calcium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and magnesium chloride. Total hardness is the sum of the carbonate hardness and non-carbonate hardness. Waters are classified as soft (0 to 75 mg/L as CaCO,), moderate (75 to 150 mg/L), hard (150 to 300 mg/L), and very hard (above 300 mg/L). Most water plants strive to reduce total hardness to about 100 mg/L, although in recent years the tendency in some cities has been to allow a little higher value in order to reduce both chemical costs and the amount of water softening sludges produced. There are four basic types of softening plants: lime softening, primarily to reduce carbonate hardness; lime-soda softening, for reduction of both types of hardness (in some plants caustic soda is used in place of soda ash, but it is more costly); split lime-zeolite, where a base exchange mineral is employed in place of soda ash (this system also requires salt [sodium chloride] to regenerate the zeolite mineral); and finally zeolite softening, which is generally used in small systems for private houses and small municipalities. Principal disadvantages of the latter system are its relatively high cost and the salt requirement, which introduces considerable quantities of soluble salts into the waste water discharge system.

The commercial deployment of advanced fine-coal cleaning technologies depends on cost-effective approaches for efficient separation and ancillary operations in handling, dewatering, drying, and transporting coal fines. As a result of two solicitations under the High-Efficiency Preparation component of the Department of Energy Coal Preparation Program, several projects were initiated for testing and evaluation of emerging technologies and equipment that address operational difficulties associated with coal fines. This paper will update the status of those projects and discuss how the technologies they represent can ameliorate some problems associated with coal fines in today's preparation plants.

Based on the current results of field practice and on experimental data obtained in the laboratory with a suitable testing apparatus, the industrial operation of diamond wire cutting can be simulated by means of a mathematical model capable of predicting the cutting velocity and the wear rate of the tool, and thence the cost figures, achievable for a variety of conditions (kind of rock, size and shape of the cut, position of the equipment) according to a predetermined setting strategy (peripheral velocity, pull- back force). The paper gives a short outline of the model and discusses the simulation results obtained in a number of cases aiming at singling out the most favourable conditions for a cost-effective use of diamond wire.

Ventilation ductlines with a single fan or with a series of fans are analyzed. The duct friction loss factors are discussed. Numerical solutions, presented in the paper, applies to any fan number and locations along a duct line. The findings are compared with formulas available in the technical literature. Values of the air leakage factors are presented in the SI, technical metric, and US unit systems. A method is shown of how to determine the leak- age factor for a given ductline. Optimum solutions for the sample duct lines with two and five fans in series are discussed and presented in a graphical form. Performance of fans in series is discussed in conjunction with both friction pressure loss and leak- age.

An expert process operation advisor system can increase plant efficiency, even in a complex, natural environment where not all elements of the production process can be measured directly. This system, develaped and tested in a Frasch process sulphur mine, monitors key process variables with extended qualitative pattern processing and provides on-line advise to the operators of sulphur production wells. An expert system framework captured common sense rules generated from years of experience obtained in the operation of a sulphur well monitoring system. The existent operating procedures were enhanced by process analysis using a qualitative modeling approach which provided extended rules for on-line classification of a well operational status and an expert alarm system. The methodology for development and implementation of the process advisor is presented in this report. Qualitative process modeling, statistical process control and heuristics were incorpomted into the process advisor resulting in a more efficient use of heat, an extended well operational life and the resulting cost savings. The computer process advisor also allowed the operator to concentrate his attention on the weak wells or wells in trouble. A process management system improved plant operation by automatically storing well data into a commercial database for operator validation. The enhanced relational data base system provided valuable and timely information for planning and decision making. The synergistic combination of on-line process analysis tools, expert control systems and database technology is shown to facilitate the flow of materials, energy and infomation in a modern plant.

The City of Los Angeles will rehabilitate approximately 9 miles of its North Outfall Sewer. This sewer was constructed in the 1920s as an unreinforced concrete semi-elliptical sewer. One of the methods for rehabilitation is to approach the sewer as a pre-excavated tunnel and install pre-cast segmental liners to provide a single pass corrosion resistant, structurally self sufficient project. The estimated cost for this project is $46 million. The project has completed the pre-design study, and the design is now underway.
