BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust is an animal carcinogen, although evidence of the carcinogenicity in humans is "limited". (World Health Org. , 1989) Of the eight cohort studies in the 19808, five found an increased risk for lung cancer among workers who may have been exposed to diesel exhaust (RR from 1.3-1.5, SMR from 101-132). (Howe, et al., 1983) Only two studies accounted for smoking indirectly. Of the ten case-control studies in the 1980's, eight reported increased risk of lung cancer among those populations purportedly exposed to diesel exhaust. (Benhamou, et al. , 1988) All but one of these adjusted for smoking and other occupational exposures. The odds ratios ranged from 1.2 to 2.1. In two of these studies, miners experienced a two to three fold risk. (Benhamou, et al., 1988) Bladder cancer has also been linked to diesel exhaust in cohort and case-control studies. Excesses of approximately 50% were observed among truck drivers in studies by NCI. (Hoar, et al., 1985) In the National Bladder Cancer Study, risks for truck drivers rose with duration of employment. A study by NIOSH in Ohio also found an excess of bladder cancer among truck drivers, particularly among those with 20 or more years of employment. (Steenland, et al, 1987) Despite the large number of studies in which the relation between diesel exhaust exposure and lung cancer has been examined, exposure to diesel exhaust has been quantitatively estimated only in the studies of railroad workers and truck drivers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) The excess lung cancer risk experienced by workers in these two occupational groups was modest, ranging from 40 to 90% for those with long-term employment. However, diesel exhaust exposure among railroad workers and truck drivers is lower than that seen among miners. Several markers of diesel exhaust have been utilized in these studies. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of particulates, vapors and gases. One group of these gases, the nitrogen oxides, react with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, forming mutagenic and possible carcinogenic nitrated derivatives. (World Health Organization, 1989) For this reason, and because it is easy to measure and analyze, NO, was frequently used as a marker of diesel exhaust exposure. As part of the Garshick (Garshick, et al., 1988) study of railroad workers, Woskie measured NO, exposures of 477 railroad workers. A numerical model is being developed to assess the enhancement of ore permeability by improving fracture connectivity with micro-hydrofracturing. As part of this project, a generic two-dimensional percolation model was developed to test the impact of various field conditions on permeability. Field data from Cyprus Minerals' Mineral Park mine was used to establish the statistical properties of the observed fracture systems. Results of statistical analyses of field data and examples of the use of the percolation model are presented

The primary purpose of the Prototype Installation Facility (PIF) for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in this conceptual design was to test the magnets and other physics equipment. PIF was located in the northwest quadrant of the SSC 54 mile (87 km) main ring and consists of the first segment of tunnels, approximately 17,060 lineal feet (5.2 km) of 12 foot inner-diameter (ID) (3.7 m) tunnel, three 250 ± foot (60 m) deep shafts, connecting tunnels, and associated niches and alcoves. PIF would be the first portion of the main ring collider tunnel to be constructed. The geology, underground excavation conditions, underground facilities, and contractual considerations are discussed.

The ever increasing price of bulk commodities forces buyers and sellers in world markets to take a more careful look at methods for obtain¬ing accurate accounting of commodity trans¬actions in commerce and material utilization in processes. Depending upon the application of a sampling and weighing system or the use intended, inaccuracies can result in an eco¬nomic loss of income or a loss in quality of the process. It inevitably results in a loss of control of ones costs. The accuracy of samp¬ling and weighing systems is today extremely important, as they are recognized to be the key components of the overall management system designed to provide both quantitative and qualitative control. This paper will be confined to the weighing systems only and will deal with various as¬pects of system design, calibration and opera¬tions. Special emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field.

This paper summarizes environmental compliance and related issues associated with underground construction and tunneling operations, whether new work or rehabilitation. Underground construction and tunneling operations have (in most cases) both an underground and surface component. Since many of the major tunneling projects occur in urban areas, often is areas inhabited for several decades or centuries, environmental problems may already exist in a project area, though that may not yet have been formally recognized. Large projects often attract more than their fair share of regulator attention. This paper addresses the issues with the greatest potential to be encountered by underground constructors, with the emphasis on minimizing contractor liabilities, both in the short- and long-term. Minimizing contractor liability begins with understanding bid documents, contract provisions and necessary means of protection, and carries through project execution by responsible control of hazardous materials, avoidance of media contamination, proper waste disposition, as well as compliance with other environmental requirements.

Technical and managerial innovations in the minerals industry have allowed continuing mining activities in the United States, and elsewhere, as gold orebody quality has diminished or has become more refractory. Of course, world markets, permitting requirements, and political processes also have created a need for innovative practices that contribute to the survival of the mineral industry. The gold industry has been transformed, during the past approximately 40 years, from a predominantly underground mining and milling type of exploitation and extraction to the large-scale, relatively low-grade type of extraction that is common in the United States today. Indeed, with the introduction of gold heap-leaching technology and the development of mines that produce from large, relatively low-grade gold orebodies in the western United States, a "new" industry was born and continues to prosper today. It is worthwhile noting, however, that Dobra (1997) has reported that one of the major trends in the North American gold industry is a movement back toward underground developments.

This project, which is intended to provide effective sewerage services to the Blue Mountains community, is located in the Blue Mountains National Park, about 60 km west of Sydney, Australia. The sewerage scheme consists of about 40 km of tunnels, out of which approximately 22 km have been completed. This paper describes the last major tunnelling operation on this project, the Hazelbrook to Katoomba tunnels. These tunnels, which mainly traverse the Hawkesbury Sandstone formation, are being excavated by a new 3.4 meter diameter Jarva Mk12C TBM. The mucking system consists of a continuous conveyor, which has allowed for some very impressive advance rates. The paper will consist of three main sections; the general geological conditions expected along the tunnel will be described in the first section. The second section will discuss the design and main features of the TBM, back-up system and continuous conveyor. The third section of the paper will describe the operational aspects and various performance data of the machine.

Coal production in the in the Powder River Basin began its tremendous expansion during the boom of the mid-1970s. New mines were opened from 1976 through the early 1980s. This expansion soon placed Wyoming at the top of the list of coal producing states, where it has since remained. Mines are operated by large companies, with safety and production having equal priority. These mines have been some of the safest ever in the coal industry. Many Sentinels of Safety Awards have gone to them. Safety programs are varied, but there are commonalities. Mine safety at Wyodak Extra training is required of all supervisors. The company offers to pay for any additional first-aid training that employees participate in. Safety departments conduct weekly safety talks. All employees receive the monthly magazine Family Safety and Health compliments of Wyodak. Electricians receive extra training on electric wheel motors, from General Electric. Equipment operators receive extra training from Dresser.

The mining industry uses a large amount of electric power. Their equipment is subject to extreme environmental conditions and mechanical shock. A significant number of electrical accidents are a result of improperly grounded electrical equipment. Federal regulations require the safety ground bed resistance to be measured once a year or after modifications. Most commercially available instruments used to measure the ground bed resistance require the ground conductor to be disconnected and the power system disconnected for safety reasons. The "fall of potential1' method requires auxiliary ground rods and approximately two hours to complete the test. Although a new instrument was initially thought to measure the ground bed resistance immediately without isolating the ground bed, field tests have shown this method is not accurate. In some cases, a continuous measurement of the ground resistance is desired. A monitor has been developed and is presently being evaluated at several mines. These installations will be discussed.

The paper describes the features of the problems encountered and the countermeasures taken for two different tunneling projects. Where, slurry shields were used to excavate, in soft heterogeneaous water-bearing grounds, tunnels passing at very low cover beneath existing foundations of H.T. electric pylons, underground structures and major utilities. In order to avoid any ground failure and/or damage to the existing structures, one option was ground treatement by grouting or freezing technics. However, it was judged that, based on previous experiences, excavation with slurry shield could be carried on securely using an appropriate slurry enriched with polymers and applying a well determined pressure at ground face. A three dimensionnal limiting equilibrium analysis model was used to determine proper confinement pressures. And, the appropriate slurry compositions were stabilished based on laboratory test results. The tunnels were excavated successfully, no ground failure was experienced, and the maximum settlement recorded (on pylons) didn't exceed 3 mm.

The Indian Mining sector is subjected to a number of trends including call for global transition towards the route to sustainable development. Several regulations were enacted by the Government departments, from time to time, in order to identify the problems faced by the mining industry, including small-scale mining operations and to suggest appropriate mitigation measures in the form of environmental standards and certifications. During this process, a pursuit of sustainable development is regarded as an important area responding to socio-economic conditions, priorities and thus guides eventually corporate policies and practices. Thus, there is a need to formulate strategies for sustainable development. Based on these strategies some environmental indicators were developed in order to track down the progress and to evaluate its success. A case study pertaining to a group of iron ore mines in North Goa and Chromite mines in Sukinda, Orissa was selected for this study. Base line environmental data has been generated in the respective study sites. A core set of environmental indicators monitoring environmental progress based on the P-S-R model pioneered by OECD is linked with indicators for assessing the integration of environmental concerns.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. Methane drainage on a mine-wide scale is a relatively new technology to South African coal mines. Shallow seams and apparently low methane contents have been assumed to result in less methane problems than experienced in other countries. The introduction of deeper mines however, has now resulted in methane drainage taking on a higher priority. Methane contents in the region of 12 m3\t have resulted in one colliery introducing drainage as a ventilation support. Although a low seam permeability initially indicated reduced potential for drainage, early borehole flows of 90 m3\m\year have since increased to 450 m3\m\year. Rapid inflow of methane into goafs and sealed areas from seams surrounding the main production seam at another colliery have warranted extensive evaluation of the methane properties of these seams with the projected introduction of predrainage from surface. Methane pressures in excess of 1000 kPa and contents in the region of 10 m3\t again give methane volumes suitable for drainage. Coal seam drainage ahead of mining is becoming more significant and is likely to see an increase in the near future. INTRODUCTION Methane gas is an everpresent hazard associated with underground coal mining. Safe working levels of methane in the mine atmosphere are normally maintained by ventilation practises, ensuring sufficient dilution of the gas. However in some cases the ventilation must be assisted by methane drainage, either from the mined seam, or from adjacent seams and strata, or from goafed areas. South African collieries have practised only limited methane drainage until now. Relatively shallow mining depths, and apparently low in-seam methane contents have been assumed to result in fewer problems with methane than are the normal for other countries. This is now being shown to not necessarily be the situation. Work carried out by the Coal Mining division of COMRO (Cook and Erwee, 1991) indicates South African production coal seams have very similar methane retention properties to those of coals in other countries, with seam gas contents of up to 12 m3/t. This awareness, as well as greater mining depths, and higher degrees of mechanisation, has resulted in higher priority being given to methane emission problems throughout the industry. Increased levels of safety, as well as possible commercial applications, are the main reasons for the interest now being shown in methane drainage. Not only is there possible applications in the present production coalfields, but South Africa has vast areas of coal reserves which are presently non-mineable, now being seen as possible alternative energy sources. Limited methane drainage is practised within the industry, but only on collieries that have identified specific methane problems that can be alleviated by drainage. Historically this has been restricted to surface drainage of longwall goafs, reducing emissions onto the faces. More recently, horizontal in-seam holes have been drilled, until now for bord and pillar sections, but the results are being evaluated for later application to shortwall faces. Adjacent seams pose problems at some sites and vertical and cross measure boreholes are now being considered.

The oxidants which participate in the bacterially catalyzed oxidation of minerals are dissolved oxygen and some aqueous iron(III) complexes. Speciation studies indicate that these complexes consist of iron (III) -sulfate and iron (III) -arsenate ions. The complexes have different oxidizing powers as indicated by their calculated standard reduction potentials. The thermodynamics of the oxidations of pyrite and arsenopyrite are related to the mechanisms of the reactions. The mechanisms are discussed in terms of primary processes occurring on the mineral surfaces and the secondary reactions of the primary products. The importance of the conclusions to plant operation is discussed.

Separation of dolomite from Florida phosphates was achieved by first conditioning the feed with fatty acid at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at pH 4 or below, before flotation. Observed selectivity of this two stage conditioning process was attributed to the amount as well as changes in the nature of the adsorbed collector species upon reconditioning. In this paper, bench scale flotation results of optimizing the major process parameters, such as reconditioning pH and collector dosage, for upgrading natural high dolomitic phosphate samples from Florida are discussed.

This paper discusses the drilling techniques and equipment used by Loffland Brothers Company to drill the AEC's UC-3 large diameter shaft in Nevada. Included are pictures and illustrations of the drilling-mud circulating system, the surface and downhole drill-string and the special heavy-duty mast and hoisting equipment required to do the job. The purpose and method of lining the large diameter holes along with the technique and materials used to backfill the lining to hole annulus are discussed briefly. Areas requiring improvement in both equipment design and technology for large diameter shaft drilling are discussed briefly. Shafts as large as 140 inches in diameter to depths of 5,000 feet can be drilled with existing equipment and technology.

A quantitative estimation of the size distribution of rock fragments is extremely important in mining, metallurgy and other geotechnical fields. This paper presents a new approach to the analysis of fragmentation. The method combines the practicality of digital image processing of the rock surface with the theoretical volume calculations based on the principles and laws of fractal geometry. The final volumetric distribution curve is compared with the results from traditional sieving indicating close agreement.
