Introduction Millions of tons of coal are shipped by rail each year in the US. Loading those trains efficiently is a topic being studied by coal producers and railroads. Alternatives range from volumetric loadouts to systems that weigh the product, using either belt conveyor scales, track scales, or weighbins. Each system has its proper application and each has pros and cons, depending on the volume, nature, and layout of the specific loading facility. In recent years, a batch weighing system has been developed that offers significant benefits to higher volume operations shipping by a unit train. The Unitrain Loadout System (ULS) features a precision electronic batch weighing system married to a mechanical loadout system by a microprocessor-based digital control system. A batch weighing loadout could be designed using analog electronics or even a mechanical weighbin. But it is the adaption and use of a microprocessor that provides the primary benefits of a unit train loading facility. Those benefits are accurate weight determination, optimum car use, overload prevention, speed in loading, optimum labor use, and documentation of the loading process. Unitrain History The first ULS was erected for iron ore applications in Canada during the 1960s. The first domestic system on coal was installed at Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co.'s McKinley mine at Gallup, NM, in 1978. At present, there are more than 20 Unitrain Loadout Systems in operation worldwide. They are loading minerals, concentrates, and coal. Eleven systems are presently in service or under construction in the US. In the last several years, a number of comparable systems have also been installed. As a result, the concept has been well proven and is now commercially available from several sources. Unitrain Operation The basic operation of a ULS involves loading a unit train with individually weighed batches of coal while it moves slowly under a loadout tower. Typical coal systems are designed to load at rates of 2.7 to 6.3 kt/h (3000 to 7000 stph). The contents of each car can be accurately weighed. This meets the requirements of the National Bureau of Standards Handbook No. 44 for static weighing. Also, cars can be loaded within very close tolerances. This optimizes railcar usage and prevents overloads. Principal components of the loadout system are the main feed conveyor, the surge bin, surge bin gates, weighbin, weighbin gate, flood loading chute, control room, calibration weights, and hydraulic and electrical systems (Fig. 1). Main feed conveyor: Coal is delivered from a storage area by the main feed conveyor. The conveyor fills the surge bin. It should be capable of conveying coal at the same rate at which it is being loaded. Usually the feed conveyor is equipped with a conveyor scale that can display rate in the control room and control feed to the belt. The surge bin will typically store 227 to 272 t (250 to 300 st) of coal. If the loadout is installed in an over-the-track silo, there is no need for a surge bin. Four double-bladed, hydraulically actuated gates are incorporated into the bottom of the surge bin. These gates open to fill the weighbin. Automatic pre-act points are selected by the control system. They shut these gates as the desired weight is approached. The final amount of coal is added by a single gate that closes. This results in a weighed batch of coal within ± 0.5% of the selected optimum load per railcar. Thus, if loading 91-t (100-st) capacity cars, the system is set to batch up 90.2 t (99.5 st) batches. All technologies move through a cycle from infancy to maturity. Thickened tailings have moved into the young adulthood phase of its development. Many mining companies like the idea of reducing their water-taking and water disposal issues. This limits the risks associated with traditional surface water-covered tailings facilities and the reduced dilution possible through underground disposal of thickened or paste tailings. Just as home theater systems advertised as ?plug and play? are rarely quite that straightforward, implementing and improving a thickened-tailings system has its challenges. However, the technology has also developed in recent years so it is more accessible. Some success factors have emerged because of the new technologies. Is thickened tailings the right solution? The first step in success with thickened tailings should be whether it is, in fact, the right solution for a particular mine. And, if so, what type of thickening is best. The answer depends on several factors, including: ? Grain size: The grain size that is optimal for maximizing mill recovery is some-times not suitable for thickening. Other mineralogical factors, such as mica content, may also influence whether the tailings are suitable. ? Water issues: Available water does not always have the purity necessary for the process. Another issue to consider is that if water is in short supply, as is increasingly often the case, thickening may be a way to reduce the need to both take and dispose of water.

The ability to make a good profit in the mining industry is becoming more and more difficult. Typically, grades are lower, sites are more remote, and environmental restrictions are getting tighter than ever before. While the price of the materials P.roduced, such as gold and silver, have stayed flat or declined, the external costs (goods and services) have increased. Increasingly difficult environmental restrictions have increased the lime and costs of develoJ?in9 new deposits, while often placing restrictions on a mme s production rate. Environmental costs for mine closure and site reclamation also make it very difficult to show a long-term profit while mining. Typically, the answer to this cost/price squeeze has been technological innovation. The whole concept of heap leaching low-grade gold ore is one innovation that provided some very goocf profits to the mining companies; but, today, those profits are being eroded by the continuing cost/ price squeeze. Little comprehensive information has been reported on the behavior of room-and-pillar mines. The objective of this paper is to present case data on mine failures in the Illinois basin for use in practice. Presented are results of an ongoing study and details on the site characteristics of cases where sags have developed on the surface. Site data are reported to show the geologic, mining, and sag conditions that existed. Sags mainly develop from pillar, floor, or pillar-floor failure. The character of the sags depends upon the type of mine failure as well as the overburden response.

The White Pine Mine is located 4- 1 /2 miles south of Lake Superior in the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The orebody occurs in tabular, gently dipping Keweenawan sediments. GEOLOGY The orebody outcrops beneath 30-50 feet of Pleistocene clays and dips to the east and northeast to a depth of 3, 000 feet in five miles. It lies midway between the Porcupine Mountains and the Bergland Hills, both of which are steeply dipping felsite and coarse porphyry intrusives, extrusives and sediments (Figures 1 and 2). The orebody sediments were deposited in the Keweenawan basin during mid- and upper Keweenawan times. Mineralization occurs in the basal 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, which is made up primarily of laminated siltstone s. Native copper, chalcocite, and silver are the ore minerals. The ore is mined by trackless room-and-pillar methods.

Throughout recorded history, underground fires have plagued mining operations. Compared with other hazardous situations in underground mining, a fire can become a global problem by swiftly spreading deadly carbon monoxide and other products of combustion (POC's) throughout the whole mine, often without warning. Experience has shown that when fires are detected and located in their early stages, they are much easier to control and proper escape routes can be more intelligently selected. Recent advances in sensor and data communication technology have made reliable mine fire .detection system installations possible. Unlike building construction. in a mine, it is impractical to install detectors at every desired location. Abandoned workings and unsafe locations preclude sensor installations from both safety and economic standpoints. The net effect is that some fires are detected and located early while the location of others, even if detected early, remains unknown too long for effective evacuation and fire fighting.

The Escalante Silver Mine in Southwest Utah produces an average of 71.000 kg (2.3 million troy ounces) of silver dore annually. Precipitates from a cyanide leach circuit are treated by either acid leaching prior to fusion or a direct fusion with nitre. Process development, plant experience, and a comparison of both methods will be discussed. Plant experience from the custom treatment of a gold/silver precipitate containing matte producing elements will also be covered.

Is the Brazilian gold rush over? Judging from the situation in Brazil over the past few decades, the answer is almost certainly yes. The picture of swarms of Brazilian prospectors or "Garimpeiros" crowding or, more correctly, overcrowding the gold regions of the Amazon jungle using the time-aged empirical approach to gold exploration has finally run its course. There are two fallacies that have lead to a reduction in the discovery of new gold fields in Brazil. The first fallacy is that "Brazil's geology is largely unknown." The extreme depth of weathering and the general lack of understanding of the shield deposits are at the origin of this misconception. The second fallacy is that "Brazilian prospectors ("garimpeiros") are very naive, have very little technical knowledge and can only produce gold at very low recovery rates." This is more of a result of wishful thinking for the purpose of justifying limiting exploration programs than it is a real consideration. In this paper, the author takes a methodical heuristic approach to gold exploration in Brazil and offers this as an alternative to the empirical approach of the garimpeiros.

Offshore oil and gas production operations have moved from water depths of about 50 feet in 1948 to the present record depth of 340 feet. Although mobile drilling rigs are widely used for exploratory drilling, most development drilling and production operations have been conducted above water from the decks of fixed, bottom-founded platforms. Increasing water depths have caused problems associated with design and construction of these platforms and with laying of pipelines, but not so much with other activities. After a platform is installed, drilling, production, and maintenance operations are similar to those onshore and are relatively unaffected by water depth. Events of 1968 indicate that offshore production may soon extend into much deeper water. These events include leasing of Santa Barbara Channel acreage in water depths over 1500 feet, and the successful drilling of a wildcat well in 1300 feet. Designs have been developed for platforms suitable for installation in water over 600 feet deep, and studies suggest they may be used in some areas to water depths of 800 to 1000 feet. Buoyant towers can probably support above-surface platforms in water 1000 feet and deeper. Although the cost of either of these platforms will be high, once installed they will permit relatively low-cost development drilling and production operations compared with estimates for subsea production systems. In some cases, savings in development drilling costs alone could pay out the platform investment.

The Fosfago phosphate rock concentrator is located in the state of Goias, Brazil, 300 km south of Brasilia. The ore is from an enriched carbonatite, which was discovered in 1971 during exploration for pyrochlore niobium ore. The flowsheet was developed in Brazil by personnel from Agrico Chemical Company and Consolidated South America. Engineering was provided by Codemin, a subsidiary of Consolidated, Engineering and construction management was pro- vided by both Agrico and Consolidated personnel who formed the Fosfago team. The concentrator was designed for 500,000 tpy of 37-38% P2Oj dried product. The facilities consist of open pit mining, crushing, stockpiling, and concentration. The product is pipelined seven km to a filtering, flash drying, and railroad loadout station. The plant was successfully started in May 1979.

INTRODUCTION As man moved through the ages into the era of metals, he became increas¬ingly dependent on the extraction and beneficiation of various ore types. His progression has required more material, new sources, and inevitably, a need to extract the values from ores of much lower yield. Inherently welded to this need to extract has been the attendant requisite of power and water to carry out these tasks. With the richness of these deposits diminished, and the in¬crease of demand, mining has become so intimately tied with the needs of these auxiliary systems that the modern day milling operation can ill afford to ignore them. In the times of Agricola 16th century methods of milling required little thought for power or water consumption. Reduction was accomplished by hand¬sorting and hammer and grinding done with stamps and millstones. Medieval concentration was carried out by the "Jigging sieve" with agitation supplied by the sleeveless arm of the operator (The Mines Magazine,_ March 1933). Little consideration was likely given to the power source unless it became apparent that he had insufficient means to meet the demands of a dawn to dusk operation. Fuel for power production was also probably of little consequence unless sustained drought or warring neighbors burned the miners fields. Water was available from any adjacent stream with recycle, potable, tailings and mill consumption all going and coming from the same source. By the end of the 18th century and the early 19th century the requirements of larger throughputs and better re¬covery were forcing the miner to the need for greater sources of power and water. Arrastras, capable of accepting several hundred pounds of charge, con¬sisted of a clay bottom, a "liner of rocks harder than the substance to be crushed" and a revolving center post in which the ore was ground and amalga¬mated. Used in conjunction with a slucing system, this formed the primary recovery method of the time. Power was supplied by horse or oxen or, if terrain was amenable, by use of a horizontal or overshot water wheel. A typical system required 4.5 kw (6 hp) and needed to run in the vicinity of 15 rpm (Pre¬ston, 1895).

INTRODUCTION Grinding mills have been used in the minerals processing industry for over 100 years. Their dimensions have grown continuously during this time. Besides increasing throughput rates of grinding plants due to the depletion of high grade ores, the lower specific in- vestment costs, as well as reduced operating and maintenance requirements are major reasons for this trend. When selecting new plant equipment one must consider that design principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today's equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger size of equipment. Modern calculation methods as for instance the Finite Element method already contribute considerably to the safe design of the huge equipment being built today and are a standard tool of the design engineers. More recently, modern computer programs are also being used in order to size the equipment to meet the process requirements. Today, two design principles are on the market - one which supports the weight of such a unit on trunnion bearings through cast conical endwalls and one which is supported through slipper pad bearings arranged at the circumference of the mill shell (Fig.1). The reason for the development of this alternative grinding mill design can be found in the past. During the sixties and seventies the growing sizes of ball mills with high LID ratios caused many mill failures due to cracked endwalls. The accuracy of the calculation methods as well as the quality standards for castings were not developed to a degree required for such kind of heavy equipment. One way to overcome these problems was the increase of the manufacturing quality standards as well as the introduction of the finite element method based on the analysis of the experience available. The biggest grinding mills being built today are large size SAG mills with cast conical endwalls and trunnion bearings (Fig.2). This is due to the fact that mill manufacturers who had come from the conventional ball mill design adopted these principles as well to their SAG mills. These grinding mills perform well without special concern to the operators. Other manufacturers overcame the problems as mentioned above by eliminating completely the heavy castings and trunnion bearings and the problems associated to it (Fig.1). This design was originally applied to ball mills for the mining and other industries. Due to the success of these shell supported ball mills, this design principle was also applied to SAG mills(Fig.3). Despite of the fact that the majority of today's grinding mills are built to the conventional design it is also interesting to have a look at this alternative. Principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today's equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger equipment if bigger mill sizes are realized only based on the pantograph principle. With growing grinding mill sizes, the mass and volume flows through the equipment increases rapidly. Thus it is very important not only to concentrate on the safe design of the structural components of the equipment but as well on the process requirements. The influence of the design on important process parameters of dry and wet grinding plants are discussed thereafter. It shall be shown how modern computer programs can assist in the optimization of the design of components in order to fulfil the operational requirements of such large size equipment. PROCESS REQUIREMENTS OF LARGE SIZE GRINDING MILLS Dry Grinding Mills The world's biggest ball mill is a dry grinding ball mill having a diameter of 6.2m and an overall length of 25,5m with a drive power of 11,200 KW or 15,000HP. This grinding mill dries and grinds gold ore at a rate of 500 tons per hour at a moisture content of up to 9,5%. As shown in Fig.4 this mill was built as a shell supported unit. In fact only this design principle allowed to meet the process requirement. This mill could hardly be built with cast conical endwalls due to the constraints of the trunnion bearings limiting the mill inlet. The following case shows how modern computer programs can help to meet the design criteria of the air system of large size dry grinding plants. Before and in the early stages of industrialization, mining was the undisputed leader in technology. It represented the high-tech of the time. Early mechanization bears witness to that. Hoisting and rock breaking driven by waterpower are such examples. The mines' use of the steam engine was a major incentive to its development. By these means new mines could be opened and more metal supplied. Understanding of systems was essential for miners when shaping the infrastructure of the mines for the transportation of ore, material and men and for the evacuation of water and for ventilation. The irrigation systems of ancient mines are such examples. However, with the industrial revolution other more specialized branches of industry advanced further, and the mines became users of other industrial branches technologies. The mining industry had, however, always been quick to recognize a good thing and use it, when time was right. But, compared with other branches of industry, the mining industry has the disadvantage of working in a rugged environment with (and actually inside) a raw material which is abrasive and highly variable with respect to mechanical properties. This determines the rather high unpredictability of mining machines' performances and their low availabilities and explains a part of the delays in introducing technological advances.

A recent use of blind shaft drilling to access a small gold ore body in Australia is described. Finally, the most recent developments in drilling machinery are reviewed together with possible applications in new and existing mines.

Shock loss occurs when there is a change in the area of a drift or airflow direction. These shock losses accumulate throughout the ventilation system and will increase the mine resistance as underground development deepens or becomes more complex. Hence, shock losses should be carefully considered when establishing the resistance through a series of branches as they can be a significant contributor to the estimated mine resistance. Using computer software to simulate a ventilation system is common but applying reasonable shock loss factors in the software is not a simple or direct process. Determining shock loss values includes the consideration of historical measurements, application of factors and formulas from literature based on the geometry and complexity of junctions, and the geometry variation at different locations. For example, the shock loss at the bottom of a ventilation raise can consist of a 90° bend and a sudden area change. This paper presents an approach for estimating shock loss factors near raise junctions using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Current and future work will also be compared with field measurements. Results from this approach are compared with software defaults as well as classical techniques in published literature and standards.

The ever-increasing power (and decreasing cost) of computers has opened up substantial oppor¬tunities for 'Vision'-based systems in both on-line and off-line control. This paper reviews image analysis applications in use at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) for: •blast and mill feed size monitoring; •AG/SAG mill model-based control; •mineral liberation; and •froth flotation control. The SPLIT™ image analysis system is being used to estimate muck pile and ROM feed sizings. AG/SAG mill feed sizing is being used in a dynamic model for mill control. A new generation mineral liberation analyzer has been developed with Philips Electron Optics. The Philips-JKMRC mineral liberation analyzer offers a substantial improvement in resolution and speed over previous developments. While on-line liberation control continues to be something of a pipe dream, measuring liberation "one shift behind" is now feasible. A robust instrument has been developed to measure flotation froth bubble size and velocity. The instrument also derives a parameter that allows different froth textures to be distinguished. The instrument has been used for on-line control in coal and sulfide flotation. For coal froth, an online ash estimate has been achieved at one site and is being tested at other sites. Overall, image analysis is finding many applications in mineral processing and control.

The Bear Creek Uranium Mill was designed in 1975 to process 909 tonnes per day (1000 STPD) of low-grade uranium ore from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. The mill was expanded to 1818 tonnes per day (2000 STPD) in 1979. The Bear Creek Uranium Project is owned by the Bear Creek Uranium Company, a partnership of Rocky Mountain Energy Company and Mono Power Company. The original mill design contemplated processing ores from Bear Creek Uranium Company properties exclusively. The expanded capacity has been utilized for tolling ores from Kerr McGee Nuclear Corp. and other mining companies in the region. This paper describes the process of designing the original mill, the lessons learned from operation, and the design of the process modifications required for expansion. The project background, design philosophy, design basis, design criteria, actual flowsheet, special design considerations, and a comparison of assumed operating conditions and actual operating results will be presented. Bear Creek Uranium Company wishes to thank and acknowledge the help granted by the many operating companies who provided invaluable information, insight, and critique of the Bear Creek design through all the various stages and were instrumental in the successful completion and start-up of the mill. "For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. On August 29, 1989, the Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), published a Federal Register concerning a new proposed rule on air quality, chemical substances and respiratory protection standards. As of this writing, their proposed rule has not become a standard. However, with little revision it could be expected to become a standard, and we in the mining industry will be expected to adhere to and enforce it.

Ore reserves in the Republic mining district were nearly exhausted in 1984 when hole D-54 intersected a vein twenty- eight feet in drill width averaging 1.57 opt gold and 11.95 opt silver below post-mineral lake beds. The discovery area, termed "Golden Promise", has announced proven and probable ore reserves of approximately 372,000 tons averaging 1.0 opt gold and 4.5 opt silver, and drilling indicates another 756,000 tons of mineralized material containing 0.37 opt gold and 1.4 opt silver (Hecla fourth quarter 1986 report). This paper describes new geological interpretations made as part of a district research study sponsored by Hecla Mining Co., which led to the D-54 discovery. Important new geological concepts include: 1) re-interpretation of the volcanic stratigraphy of the district and recognition of a suite of pyroclastic rocks that are unique to the Republic graben, 2) identification of disseminated subaerial mineralization at a paleosurface that corresponds to the newly described upper contact of the Sanpoil Volcanics, 3) recognition that epithermal veins have a maximum productive vertical range of 0-500 meters, measured from the paleosurface, and 4) veins exhibit visual and geochemical vertical zoning within the productive zone with highest gold occurring at an optimal depth, which is interpreted as the average depth of hydrothermal boiling.
