State-of-the art precious metal recovery practice uses cyanide leach solutions to extract the valuable constituents from ores, wastes, and tailings. Activated carbon is then used as an adsorbent in either a carbon-in-pulp system or counter-current flow columns to concentrate and recover the precious metals. Existing techniques for recovering precious metals from carbon prior to the precipitation or electrowinning of the metal involve either the use of dilute aqueous hydroxide solutions at elevated temperature and pressure or, as in a more recent method, the use of a strong cyanide soak followed by a water strip solution at an elevated temperature. Despite past Bureau efforts in the area of precious metal recovery, the ex- traction of gold from pregnant leach solutions remains the most serious drawback in carbon-in- pulp and heap leach processing of low-grade ores containing precious metal values. A second disadvantage in the current practice is the interference in adsorption and desorption that occurs due to the presence of other heavy metal cations in cyanide leach solutions. Specific objectives of current Salt Lake City Research Center precious metals research are to develop less energy intensive and more economic methods for recovering gold, silver, and by- product metals from low-grade resources. To meet these objectives, we are investigating noncyanide leaching reagents, ion exchange resins, solvent extractants, and novel electrowinnlng procedures.

The Melbourne City Link project includes two three-lane highway tunnels, 1.6 and 3.4km long, respectively, which are both approximately 16 meters wide and 9 meters high. The tunnels will be excavated through interbedded, moderately to highly jointed siltstones and sandstones of the Silurian Age Melbourne Mudstone formation over the major parts of their lengths. The strength of the intact rock varies from less than 5 MPa to greater than 70 MPa. Based on the available information regarding the performance of large span tunnels in weak rock, it was considered that the commonly applied empirical design guidelines for tunnel support, based on rock mass classification systems, should be augmented by more explicit design methods. The support design was, therefore, validated by analytical procedures, including numerical analyses, which are described in this paper.

This paper describes the production of a specific iron oxide pellet that has given very good and consistent results as feedstock for HYL-Process Direct Reduction Plants. The sponge iron originated from these pellets has been used for the economic making of almost 15 million tons of low carbon steel via electric arc furnace meltshops. An overview of mining, benefication, pelletizing direct reduction and steelmaking for this case is given with emphasis on the characteristics of the self-fluxing oxide pellets. SL-type continuous centrifugal separator with injection flow (Injection Flowing Film Centrifugation, IFFC) for separating fine and ultra-fine minerals has been developed recently in China and it is capable of recovering particles down to one micron in size. In this paper, the principle of its separation is discussed. IFFC is a special transient pulsating film which combines both thin film jigging and thin film concentration functions. It not only can intensify the looseness and stratification of the settled particles, but also create a hydraulic weir effect to improve recovery of fines and ultra- fines and significantly improve the performance of thin film separation. In a Chinese tin gravity concentrator, SL devices, SL-1200s (capacity 1.5-2.0 ton/hr) and SL-600s (capacity 0.5 ton/hr) were applied to treat -1 0 micron cassiterite slime(removed as tailings at the past) and to replace the old tin flotation system(-74+10 micron slime). The plant results show that 50-60% of the cassiterite can be recovered from -10 micron slime with an enrichment ratio of 10-12. Particle down to one micron were recovered. Under optimal conditions, the recovery from -74+10 micron slime can reach more than 85%. The recoverable size range can be determined by calculation.

Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) is the largest gold mining company in Western Africa. Their jewel operation is a highly inte­grated set of mines and plants situated in Obuasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. This operation is responsible for mining 5.5 mil­lion tonnes of ore at 4.6 git annually from a series of open pits and underground mines. The sulphide ore is highly refractory with untreated gold recoveries in the range of 30-40%. The milling facilities are quite varied and include an oxide treatment plant (OTP), a heap leach, a sulphide roaster circuit (PTP), a tailings treahnent plant (TIP) and the most recent, a sulphide treatment plant (STP). The sulphide treatment plant, the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation circuit, was commissioned in early 1994. This plant treats approximately 800 tonnes of refractory gold con­centrate per day with overall recoveries of75-85o/o(ll, Biooxidation was selected for its ease of operation and less exotic maintenance requirements as well as its ability to achieve comparable gold recoveries. Unfortunately, despite stirred tank biooxidation being one of the lower cost methods of treating refractory ores, it is still too costly for low grade refractory materials. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed a proprietary technology that allows the economic treatment of lower grade refractory gold ores through heap biooxidation. AGC has a significant resource of low grade refractory sulphide ore. This ore is too low grade to warrant BIOX™ sulphide treatment and its oxide plant recov­ery is low at 35-45%. GeoBiotics and AGC have completed pre­liminary testing and economic analysis of heap biooxidation for this material. Additionally, the feasibility of producing a gravity concentrate from the tailings of the sulphide treatment plant has been explored. This concentrate would be coated onto the low grade sulphide and biooxidized concurrently. Gold recoveries for the biooxidized low grade sulphide have increased to 75% and the gravity recovery from the STP tailings has achieved 80% uti­lizing a Falcon concentrator. The preliminary economics of the proposed full scale plant are very favourable with a pre-tax IRR of 233% and a payback period of 6 months. This paper details the biooxidation testing, flow sheet devel­opment and preliminary economics of employing heap biooxi­dation for low grade refractory ore treatment at Ashanti Goldfields' Obuasi operation.

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation utilizing large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers, and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity, and distance, and to provide historical information for planning the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. This report explains how the work order system was initiated, what data is tracked, and how the data is utilized for equipment and project scheduling.

The current political climate has forced multinational cement manufacturers to consider technology that minimizes GO, emissions. Along with this environmental issue, individual manufacturing facilities are under constant pressure to increase productivity and lower costs. The use of processing or functional additions can help address these difficult demands by maximizing the extender content in blended cements. Recently, cement standards have been modified such that additions can be employed to improve quality. By using these "cement performance enhancers," the cement manufacturer can maximize extender content of cement thus optimizing plant economics, while meeting local quality standards and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.

The sustainable management of solid wastes, including the wastes emanating from portable batteries, consists one of the main objectives of the current EU Environment Framework Programme. Overall reduction in the quantity and volume of disposed wastes, elimination of dangerous species within the waste streams and wastes recycling comprise specific targets of this policy. Within this framework a Greek funded research project entitled ?Development of an Integrated Alternative System for the Environmentally compatible Management of Used Batteries and Accumulators - DIASBAT?, was recently completed by a research team consisting of major Greek Battery producers and retailers, Research Organisations, Universities and Environmental Consultants. The aim of the project was the development of an Efficient Alternative Management System for spent portable Batteries and Accumulators, (B&A), in compliance with the prevailing EU and national environmental legislation, taking advantage of the state-of the art technology. The present article summarises the research carried out within the DIASBAT project in order to review and develop a set of sustainability indicators for the assessment of the effectiveness of Spent Portable Batteries Management Systems (SPBMS). Based on the European experience and practice, various indicators were initially examined regarding the performance evaluation of SPBMS. Specifically, the indicators used in European studies conducted to assess the environmental, social and economic impacts of the recently issued Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC, as well as the indicators used by European Collection and Recycling Organisations (CROs) to assess the performance of SBPMS across Europe were presented and analyzed. Additionally, the set of indicators used within DIASBAT to assess the effectiveness of alternative Spent Portable Batteries Collection Schemes developed within the project, are presented. The experimental collection networks of the DIASBAT project included schools, selected retail stores and a pilot network set up by the Greek Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME). From the evaluation of the various indicators, it was deduced that in order to assess an Integrated Spent Portable Batteries Alternative Management System, a multi criteria analysis approach is required. Within the general principles of sustainable development, there is a need for different qualitative and quantitative indicators to be combined, taking into consideration critical parameters such as: annual portable batteries collection rates, compliance with the targets set up by the prevailing European and national legislation, economic performance of the System - and finally social criteria - environmental sensitization according to age, gender, economic prosperity, educational level etc.

The Department of Thoracic Surgery and Pathology at the Toronto General Hospital have had a long standing interest in the early detection and treatment of carcinoma of the lung. Our initial experience was with a population at risk due to a prolonged period of cigarette smoking. More recently our efforts have turned to industrial exposure, specifically in the nickel and uranium industries. [Initial Screening Project] (1) For a three year period 1963 to 1966 a cytology screening program was carried out through the Out-Patient Department. The study was limited to cigarette smokers over 40 in age. A total of 1586 patients were examined. Of the sputa collected, the classification is seen in Table 1. There were 11 malignant sputa present. Added to this number were 25 patients with symptoms, normal chest X-rays, but malignant cells on cytology, and a further 5 patients in whom an abnormality (eventually proven non-malignant) showed on X-ray, and sputum showed malignancy which was radio logically occult. (Table II). This gave a total of 41 patients with malignant sputum who were evaluated between 1960 and 1966. The clinical course of these patients is seen in Table III. Only 19 of 41 patients had localization and treatment of their tumour during that study period and this low rate of localization attests to the technical difficulties endoscopy in that day presented. The method of localization was as follows: a) 6 patients showed an area of segmental pneumonitis somewhere in this time period b) Using the rigid bronchoscope localized the tumour in 9. This was proven by direct biopsy, and frequently required more than one bronchoscopy over a prolonged time period. c) bronchograms and tomograms showed abnormalities in 5 patients. Of these 19 patients, 5 were treated by radiotherapy because of general condition or refusal of surgery. Three of the irradiated patients died of recurrent cancer within three years. The other two died within one year of unrelated disease. Fourteen patients underwent resection, with one operative mortality. At pathology, the tumours were "in situ" in 6 and invasive in 13. There was no evidence of nodal spread. When last followed up in 1979, there were no cases of recurrent tumour and no cases of second lung primary tumours. Similar experiences have been reported from the Mayo Clinic (2), Johns Hopkins (3) and Memorial Hospitals (4). Early detection of radiologically occult tumours which are in situ or minimally invasive has given uniformly good results. There have been no deaths from recurrent or metastatic cancer in surgically resected patients, and only one second primary tumour has been detected. Interestingly, the Hopkins group reports that 5 patients with Stage I squamous cell tumours refused operation. One refused any treatment and died of disease at 12 months. Three were radiated, and were alive from 14-38 months post-treatment, all with evidence of recurrent disease. [Sudbury Sintering Plant Study](5) From 1948 to 1963 an open travelling-grate sintering process was employed to convert nickel sulfide to nickel oxide at an International Nickel Company operation. The environment in this plant was particularly dusty and filled with fumes. It became apparent by 1969 that the incidence of bronchogenic carcinoma was markedly increased in workers from this plant. A concerted effort was made to track down all workmen with this exposure. During 1973 and 1974, 268 men were studied. Chest radiographs were done and showed no mass lesions. Sputum was collected on three consecutive days and analyzed. There were 12 men with malignant sputum, all of the squamous cell variety. Two refused any investigation, one presenting 31/2 years later with extensive hronchogenic carcinoma, and the other 5 years later with extensive carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. In the remaining ten patients careful rhinolaryngeal examination as well as a detailed bronchoscopy, involving examination, brushings and biopsy of all pulmonary segments was carried out. One patient was found to have laryngeal carcinoma and was treated by radiation. In nine patients, the malignancy was localized to the lung, leading to six lobectomies, two pneumonectomies and one sleeve lobectomy at operation. However, the follow-up in these cases suggests a different biological behaviour with these industrially related tumours. While no tumour has recurred locally, one patient has died of metastatic cancer and two patients have developed second and one patient a third pulmonary primary cancer. However, survival has still been much better than wits radiographically manifest lung cancer. Application of the discrete element method incorporating the simple kinetic model of the ball-to-ball and ball-to-wall interactions enables us to visualize the details of the grinding actions prevailing in the ball mills. We have developed a computer program to represent a generic mill model with which we can simulate tumbling mills, vibration mills, centrifugal mills and planetary mills. While the program can be used for various purposes including design of new equipment, one obvious application of it is the analysis of the conventional tumbling ball mills for better understanding and improvement. The purpose of this paper is to present a model and to observe its behavior in particular attention to the spatial distribution of the energy dissipation as well as the energy spectrum and their dependence on the major parameters such as mill speed, ball filling, liner configuration, slurry viscosity and the hardness of the ore.

The length of Alaska’s coastline, combined with the presence of a significant number of fjords, encourages consideration of marine disposal of mine tailings. However, since various factors govern the viability of the submarine tailings disposal (STD) option, the decision making process is complex. An expert system, called Submarine Tailings Disposal Expert System (STADES) that will help mining project planners explore the feasibility of STD, was developed. Existing literature, supplemented by engineering recommendations, on the various aspects of marine disposal of tailings was reviewed and formed the knowledge base for the expert system. The shell used to develop the expert system was LEVEL5®.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Caro's Acid (H2so5) were used to treat cyanide containjng effluents. Significant reagent savings were achieved by using Caro's Acid. Weak Acid Dissociable (W.A.D.) cyanides were removed at near stoichiometric levels of Caro's Acid. Hydrogen Peroxide showed poorer efficiency in the presence of W.A.D. cyanide complexes, resulting in higher consumption rates. Previous papers by the authors have presented a systems-engineering approach based on the premise that systems can only be optimized if all factors are considered and integrated into mine planning. This paper discusses the challenges inherent in optimizing the design of large-scale surface coal mining operations in Appalachia. Regulatory and permitting programs in the United States often focus on single parameters, rather than the full suite of desirable outcomes for sustainability. By utilizing geographic information system (GIS) tools to evaluate available data on environmental and social resources, the regulatory barriers which prevent operations from incorporating ecological and other sustainable development concerns into coal mine sustainability performance were identified. By analysis of the on-the-ground issues related to sustainability, the key parameters to be incorporated into an optimized coal mine design in Appalachia are discussed along with possible changes to the regulatory framework that would enhance incorporation of sustainability into coal mine design.

Activities in the mixed sulphides industry, such as mining and beneficiation, cause adverse impacts to the environment due to excavation, treatment and disposal of low-grade ores and tailings containing residual sulphide minerals. The greatest impact is caused by the oxidation of sulphide phases contained in the tailings and waste rock and the subsequent production of leachates characterized by low pH and high concentration of heavy and toxic elements and sulphates, called acid mine drainage, that contaminates soils, surface- and groundwater. Therefore, rehabilitation of these sites is required in order to render these pollution sources inactive and minimize environmental impacts. The calculation of risk, based on acid mine drainage probability and magnitude of consequences at the disposal sites offers engineers, environmental scientists and authorities a valuable tool for the selection and application of the best remediation technology. Several parameters, such as the chemical and mineralogical properties of the wastes, the most probable pathways the contaminants follow, the potential receptors and the exposure scenarios have to be taken into account. Therefore, risk is the most critical parameter in decision-making regarding management of mining wastes and rehabilitation of disposal sites.

In order to maximize the benefits obtained from flocculating agents when used as settling aids in high rate and conventional thickeners, it is often necessary to dilute the thickener feed prior to flocculant addition. In some cases, no flocculation at all is possible unless dilution water is used. The most common method of diluting thickener feed has been to recirculate some of the thickener overflow by means of a centrifugal pumping system. This represents a significant capital and operating cost. Supaflo Technologies of Australia has developed and patented an internal recirculation method known as Auto Dilution (or "Autodil") which is based on the principle that an hydraulic head differential exists between the inside and outside of the feedwell because of the higher S. G. of the pulp inside the feedwell, By installing non-return ports in the feedwell wall at the appropriate level, supernatant solution flows into the feedwell at a calculated rate and dilutes the feed without any need for external recirculation of overflow.

The Tilden concentrator was originally constructed in 1974 for the processing of low grade hematite. Flotation is a key concentrating process in the operation, and therefore flotation optimization has been a major concern since the plant startup. This paper will discuss some of the modifications made in the process to achieve optimization. The conversion that now enables the plant to process magnetite as well as hematite also will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The Tilden Mine, located in Ishpeming, Michigan, is managed by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs and two Canadian steel makers. It was constructed and started production in 1974 and expanded in 1979 for processing a low grade, fine-grained hematite iron formation for which there was previously no technology available. Several papers have been written describing the unique character of the concentrating operation. The hematite plant consists of 12 grinding and concentrating lines, which utilize two stages of autogenous grinding with crushing of an intermediate sized product. The ground product is deslimed in a highly dispersed alkaline environment to reject silica. Corn starch, the flocculant, has a high affinity for iron at the operating pH range of 10.5 to 11.0. The ore is upgraded from 35% to 45% iron in the desliming step. The deslime thickener underflow is the feed to flotation. Each flotation line consists of a bank of 10 rougher cells, followed by four scavenging banks incorporating 5, 4, 3, and 3 cells each. The Wemco flotation cells are each 14.1 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) in volume. A total of 12 flotation lines are available. [ ] A reverse flotation process is employed, using a straight-chain, 8 to 10 carbon primary ether amine silica collector. At the levels used in the circuit, the amine also serves as a frother. A final concentrate is produced in the rougher cells. The concentrates from the four scavenging steps are combined and recirculated to the feed end of the roughers, with the fourth scavenger froth being discarded as a final tailing. Upgrading to about 65% iron is achieved, with control of the circuit based on final concentrate silica grade. Starch is again used, this time as a depressant for iron. During the years of operation, several key areas of the flotation process have been targeted for optimization. The most significant improvements have been realized in the following areas: *Grade Control Automation *Control of Water System Chemistry *Flotation Spray Water This paper will focus on these areas, but other minor improvements also will be briefly discussed.

The day after I reached New York, on January 30th, John Ryan of Anaconda told me where they wanted me to go. Late in 1916 the Russian Czar, desperate for money and supplies with which to carry on his unhappy share In the first World War, sent emissaries to the United States to see if our great mining companies might be interested in trying to find mines and to bring them to production in the millions of acres of the Imperial Estates in Russia and Siberia. It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. He had gone on ahead to arrange for our reception Finally a graduate student from Ann Arbor named Steinberg was to go along as Interpreter. Since the 1980s, heap leaching of gold and silver ores has been developing rapidly and experienced widespread use in China because of its lower capital and operating costs, less time consumed in construction and specific applicability to small-to-medium scale mining operations and low grade ores. Ores treated include ordinary oxidized ores, refractory sulfide ores and even those containing deleterious elements (such as arsenic or antimony) and/or carbonaceous substances. In addition to chemical leaching agents, some micro-organisms (e.g. T-ferrooxidians and T-thiooxixians) and their biochemistry mechanism have been equally emphasized. To overcome the adverse effect caused by excessive content of fines and slimes, research and pilot experiments of agglomeration-heap leaching are currently underway at two gold mines in South China and their encouraging preliminary achievements will be briefly described as illustrations in this paper. It could be expected that heap leaching of gold and silver ores holds promise and will play an increasingly important role in China's gold industry.
