OUTSTANDING TRENDS of the year included the following: 1. Concentration and beneficiation of iron ores to provide improved blast-furnace feed and extend ore reserves. 2. Successful development of pelletizing and sintering procedures for fine iron ores. 3. The realization that cyclone separation could replace existing classifiers in many grinding circuits. 4. The rapidly blossoming metallurgy of ultrapure silicon and improvements in zone melting. 5. The rapid increase in the use of liquid-liquid extraction and ion exchange in hydrometallurgy. 6. The industrial application of vacuum melting on the 100-ton scale. 7. The hope for developing a columbium (noibium) base alloy for high-temperature use. The technologic advancement in metallurgy that had the greatest effect on the American economy was the beneficiation of iron ores to give improved feed for blast furnaces and indirectly extend our ore reserves. This was not a sudden development but rather culmination of a decade of intensive effort.

Methods for converting WOCl4 to WCle were investigated in small-scale, laboratory apparatus to devise a method for preparing pure WCls suitable for conversion to tungsten metal. Chlorine, COCI2, and CCI4, alone and in combination with various forms of carbon, were tested as chlorinating agents at various temperatures. More than 95 percent conversion of WOCl4 to WCls was achieved with all reagents at 8000 C in the presence of activated carbon. Only CCl4 maintained its effectiveness in the absence of carbon at 800° C. The effectiveness of carbon was found to be related directly to its surface area.

Research by the Bureau of Mines includes efforts to devise means for maximum recovery of critical and strategic metals from primary and secondary domestic resources. As part of that effort, the Bureau developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Co, Ni, and Cu from Missouri lead-smelter matte. The process includes leaching with H2S04 plus Mn02 as an oxidizing agent, liquor purification, selective precipitation of CuS, (Co,Ni)S, and MnC03, and crystallization of Na2S04&apos; This report is concerned primarily with liquor purification, in which As and Fe are removed from the leach liquor by pH adjustment and filtration. Two variations of the purification step are described. One variation provides liquor containing <1 mg/L As and Fe but requires two solid-liquid separations, The other is achieved with only one solid-liquid separation but leads to a lower degree of purification.

"INTRODUCTION Mine fires have occurred since underground mining of minerals began, and they are still occurring. The technical literature is replete with papers relating to mine fires.Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents require the collection and analyses of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the fire. Such atmos¬pheres are complex mixtures of gases (1, 3, 4, 15, 21, 23).3/SUMMARYExperiences at mine fires (1, 3, 4, 15, 21, 23) have proved conclusively that mine-air analyses furnish the only means of judging what is going on in a mine fire area. Mine-air analyses give evidence of conditions that require immediate protection, govern the order and control the manner in which a fire is fought, show the necessity of bulkheads and establish the places to construct them, indicate whether or not a fire is being controlled or is being extinguished, and govern procedure in sealing and unsealing mine fires.It is commonly believed that danger to life and property from mine-fire atmospheres is greatest in coal mines; this is true only to the degree that the explosion hazard is greater in coal mines than in noncoal mines because of the presence of combustible gases. The problem of gas poisoning is greater in noncoal mines because of the more frequent occurrence of poisonous and innocuous gases, oftentimes the lack of controlled ventilation, and usually greater difficulties in sealing mine-fire areas. Sulfide minerals present a serious hazard in many metal-mine fires when sulfur dioxide is formed. The country rock or ore body itself may contain or be limestone, which may be calcined. Emanations of carbon dioxide are found."

"INTRODUCTION The act of Congress establishing the Bureau of Mines in 1910 delegated to the Bureau, as one of its principal duties and functions, the study of health and safety in the mineral industries with a view to devising and putting into operation means of conserving the health and safety of persons employed in the industries. One of the first health and safety activities of the Bureau of Mines was therefore organization of a trained force to promote instruction in first aid in the mineral industries. First-aid training has been an important activity of the Bureau of Mines since its establishment. The standard first-aid course requires a minimum of 15 hours of instruction and practice work. A person completing the initial training course is issued an engraved certificate and pocket card certificate; thereafter, only a pocket card certificate is issued for additional training.From 1910 to 1926 first aid was taught by trained Bureau of Mines employees; consequently, only a comparatively few persons were trained. In 1926, however, cooperative first-aid training was initiated, which provided the means to train the entire personnel of mines or plants within a short time in a single campaign. Many mines and plants have taken advantage of the cooperative plan, whereby keymen in a mine or plant, in addition to the initial training received, are given intensive training in first aid by a Bureau of Mines instructor. Those men who show an aptitude for teaching are selected as tentative provisional first-aid instructors. In order to qualify as a provisional instructor, a tentative instructor must, under the supervision of a Bureau of Mines instructor, train a class of at least six persons employed in the minerals industries in the standard Bureau of Mines course in first aid. After it has been determined that the class has been trained properly, a provisional first-aid instructor's pocket card certificate is issued to the class instructor. The first-aid instructor can renew his pocket card certificate each year by training or retraining at least six persons connected with the mineral industries to satisfactorily pass an examination given by a Bureau of Mines representative. After five yearly renewals of a provisional instructor's pocket card certificate, an engraved, permanent instructor's certificate and a permanent instructor's pocket card certificate are issued to the instructor."

"Introduction In the course of the investigations by the Bureau of Mines into the various causes of coal-mine explosions, the fact that several gas explosions had occurred during or very soon after a mine was being un-watered, attracted the attention of the Bureau's engineers. The apparent coincidence was so marked that there appears to be an extra hazard present, whenever water, which has been standing against the face of the coal for some time, is suddenly removed either by natural drainage or by mechanical means.Actual Occurrences Case 1. - A typical illustration of this hazard is shown in a gas explosion which occurred in a mine in Central Pennsylvania. Four main entries, 50 feet apart with an average grade of 6 per cent, had been driven with the dip of the coal, and from these mains 7 pairs of entries, at intervals of 800 feet, had been turned at such an angle that their grade was slightly rising. Prom these latter pairs of entries, rooms were turned practically at right angles.The main entries had been driven for 4,500 feet and at the face there was 400 feet of cover. As far as could be observed, the roof was of sandstone and the floor of clay.The coal bed being mined was the Lower Kittanning, which has a thickness of about 4 feet. "INTRODUCTION The Cline mine has been worked intermittently for copper and gold since 1895. Scheelite has recently been detected with the aid of a ""Mineralite"" on the old waste dumps of the mine. Four diamond-drill holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines from August 13 to September 25, 1946. Results of this drilling showed the vein to pinch at depth and to carry no mineralization of economic importance.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. SUMMARY The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactc rely demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No. 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia. The remote sealing consists of: (1) A sonar initial probing system which can operate satisfactorily even in the presence of dense smoke. The system is capable of determining both the local passageway geometry, identifying the presence of cribs and other obstructions, and the position of the borehole in the mine passage. (2) A mine sealing material system which utilizes fly ash for making the complete seal or as a bulk filler in conjunction with a urethane, froth foam, seal topping system. The choice of using fly ash alone or fly ash with foam topping depends on a number of factors, such as quality of seal desired, time available per seal, depth of borehole, passageway geometry, and water holding require¬ment. The Bureau of Mines developed a process to extract about 90 percent of the sulfur from molybdenite flotation concentrate by compacting the concentrate with one-quarter of its weight of aluminum powder, heating it at 800° C for 30 minutes, and then allowing the product to react with water. This thermite reduction yields an impure molybdenum alloy plus aluminum sulfide. The latter readily hydrolyzes, to yield pure hydrogen sulfide which can be converted to elemental sulfur by the Claus process. At least 95 percent of the molybdenum can be subsequently recovered as 99.95-percent-pure molybdic oxide.

Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County, Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals4/ and. investigations of their chemical and physical properties.5/ The coal represented by the sample from weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the gas from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.

"Usually a newly developed machine leaves the factory ""on a wing and a prayer."" The manufacturer hopes that the operator will hasten to report defects. In turn, when the suggestions arrive the manufacturer makes the required changes and maintains close collaboration with the operator. Thus the history of our machines of today is written.Laboratory concentration tables are exceptions to growth by experiment and collaboration. Their operation never enters directly into the cost sheet; they are seldom used for longer periods than 10 minutes; and the experimenter, while hurrying to another job, accepts the table, good or bad, for a quick test on his ore. Thus we go back about 50 years when we use the preset in factory-built laboratory table.The Southern Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, recognized the existence of a tabling problem net usually considered. That is, instead of using the table to test the ore, the ore was used to test the table. In this critical examination of laboratory table six defects were encountered (and remedied). They are:"

"The successful use of the gas mask by the American Army it France in combatting the poisonous gases of German .shells caused many Army men to feel that the as masks were proof against any kind of gas which might be encountered. The result has been that from time to time there have been reported in the press, deaths of former army men through using their masks to enter various kinds of gases such as illuminating gas, gasoline vapor, and the gaseous atmospheres produced by mine fire. Such a case has just been reported from a mine, in Copperopolis, California, where a former Army man lost his life in descending a mine shaft filled with the fumes of a mine fire. Another man who, in attempting to rescue him, merely used a dust respirator, lost his life also.While the American type of the Army gas mask was developed by the Bureau of Mines for the War Department, and since the war a section of the Bureau's in¬vestigative force has been developing industrial gas masks for certain specificgases, the Bureau has repeatedly called to the attention of the public the fact that such masks have serious limitations and in no case should a gas mask be used in underground workings for the reason that there may be an insufficient amount of oxygen to breathe, (and the gas mask does not supply oxygen) or there may be present carbon monoxide, which the Army mask will not remove, and there always is some carbon monoxide produced by a mine fire or by a coal-mine explosion, or by a blast of dynamite or other explosive.It is true that the Bureau has been developing a mask which may take care of a small percentage of carbon monoxide, that is, one per cent and under, but in mine fires and after explosions, there may be, and frequently is, a much larger percentage of carbon monoxide in the mine atmosphere. Masks such as these, for small percentages of carbon monoxide and associated gases are for use in connection with industrial surface plants, as for example, on the top of a blast furnace or around gas producers in the open air."

An instrumentation and numeric modeling study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Magmont Mine in Bixby, MO. An isolated section of this room-and-pillar mine was monitored with borehole and closure extensometers during a pillar recovery program to determine stress redistribution. In situ stress measurements were taken in the rib before pillar extraction began. Sample cores from the boreholes were taken for analysis of the properties of the host rock in the laboratory. The extensometers recorded no measurable displacements during most of the operation. Two-dimensional, finite-element; three-dimensional, finite-element; and three-dimensional displace-ment discontinuity codes were used to model the area of study. The finite-element models were run with two initial stress conditions, i.e., stress due to gravity only and stress obtained by in situ measurements. Horizontal stresses in the models reduced the calculated factor-of-safety in the mine back by up to a factor of 10, but did not have a significant effect on calculated pillar stability.

Maintain good blowing face ventilation while taking deeper cuts with a radio-remote, scrubber-equipped miner. Approach A six week in-mine study of face ventilation effectiveness was made by comparing the existing MSHA-approved blowing curtain setback distance of 25 ft with brattice set back distances of up to 50 ft. Effectiveness was determined by measuring methane levels at the face and in the immediate return. How It Works Blowing ventilation systems are commonly used in mines because the high velocity air stream created by these systems rapidly mixes with and dissipates methane generated during the cutting of coal. A drawback to blowing ventilation is that the work area is placed in return air and this may create dust compliance problems for the shuttle car and mining machine operator. To clean dust from the return a number of mining machine manufacturers supply dust scrubbers built into the machine. Dust-laden air is drawn into ducting at the front of the mining machine&apos;s boom and is ducted to a scrubbing unit located on the machine&apos;s main frame. The clean air from the scrubber is discharged as a high velocity jet toward the return, generally from the left fender of the mining machine. When taking cuts deeper than 20 to 25 ft with a scrubber-equipped machine, the machine&apos;s discharge is in by the mouth of the blowing curtain, creating a concern by mine workers that a loss of air to the face could result. However, Bureau of Mines research found that the push or throw of air toward the return by the scrubber discharge jet allows good face ventilation to be maintained with extended curtain setbacks.

Pillar recovery has been associated with nearly one third of roof fall fatalities in underground coal mines during the past decade. Safe pillar recovery requires global stability and local stability. Global stability is addressed primarily through pillar design. The local stability risk factors include cut sequence, the final pillar stump, supplemental supports (timbers vs. Mobile Roof Supports (MRS)), roof bolting, and many others. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated each of these factors through field research and analysis of accident statistics. The paper discusses design methods and technologies that have been transferred to the mining community and implemented.

Compare the fire endurance of paneled steel stoppings with that of traditional concrete block Stoppings. Background Permanent stoppings or partitions arc used in mines to separate ventilation airways. The ability of stoppings to retain their structural integrity for a minimum length of time under lire conditions and prevent the spread of flame and toxic combustion products to an adjacent airway is critical. The success of miners in reaching safety during a fire depends largely on the presence of uncontaminated airways. Traditionally, permanent stoppings for coal mines are constructed of concrete blocks. Recently, paneled steel stoppings that satisfy many of the requirements demanded of permanent stoppings, such as incombustibility and strength, have been introduced. Their use also introduced concerns such as the ability of a steel stopping to maintain its ventilation control function when exposed to a fire and the potential that the fire could transmit enough heat through the stopping to ignite combustible materials on the unexposed side. To address these concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated the fire endurance of galvanized steel and concrete block stoppings.

Since 1990 and the publication of the Ergonomics Program Management Guidelines for Meatpacking Plants by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, numerous reports of companies implementing ergonomics program have been published. However, despite these numerous reports, no examples of implementing an ergonomics program in the mining industry have been reported. In 2000, NIOSH initiated a long-term project to demonstrate the implementation of an ergonomics process designed to identify and reduce exposures to ergonomic risk factors found in mining. The mine selected for this project was the Jim Bridger Mine, a surface coal mine located 35 miles northeast of Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, WY. This paper discusses how a large, surface coal mine implemented an ergonomics program and the lessons learned while doing so.

Develop a method for control of groundwater inflow to chronically "wet" sections of underground coal mines, in order to reduce groundwater interference with mining activity and to minimize acid mine drainage. Approach In eastern coal regions, groundwater stored in fracture zones in the rock mass can create a significant water problem for underground mining operations. Fracture stored inflow to mine workings impedes mine productivity since storage water sources usually release at the active face, creating the poor mining conditions typical of a "wet" section. Fracture water can also contribute to AMD problems when the water subsequently contacts sulfide minerals in the coal, The Bureau of Mines has developed a mine-dewatering method that eliminates many of the problems associated with mine water inflow by draining these fracture zones before the water can reach the developing face and interfere with mining activity. How it Works The dewatering method removes large volumes of the stored groundwater through high-capacity pumping from a minimal number of wells placed strategically on fracture traces (the surface expressions of fractured rock zones). These fracture traces are located through low-level aerial photographic and geologic investigation. As shown on the map, dewatering wells are sited precisely on fracture trace intersections in order to take advantage of the increased pumping capacity gained from these zones of high permeability. The Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Thiessen Team USA, Spokane, WA, have developed a pull claw that can be attached to any accessible friction bolt ring to test the performance (i.e., load-carrying capacity) of bolts without the use of a pull collar. This would allow true random testing of friction bolts, which need to be evaluated to determine if they are still providing an adequate level of support months or years after installation. Such support is critical to maintaining safe working conditions for underground miners.

The Bureau of Mines developed data on the methane content of the Hartshorne coalbed, Haskell and Le Flore Counties, Okla. The methane content is calculated to be between 1.1 and 1.5 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimate of total coal in place of 2.4 to 3.2 billion short tons. Methane increases with depth, but the rate of increase decreases with greater depths. Degasification in advance of mining is recommended for all mines operating at depths greater than 500 feet to reduce hazards and methane explosions, decrease mine ventilation costs, and conserve the natural gas that would be otherwise wasted.
