The purpose of this Bureau of Mines work was to develop information useful in improving copper recovery during copper milling operations. Eleven copper mill tailings from the Western United States were subjected to froth flotation and cyanide leaching to provide an experimental basis for comparing their beneficiation response. Recoveries in flotation concentrates made from mill tailings ranged from 65 to 15 percent, at copper grades of 13 and 2.2 percent, respectively. Liberated copper sulfide minerals present in two samples were readily recovered by laboratory froth flotation. Nine of the samples were less amenable to froth flotation because of physical locking between copper sulfide minerals and gangue. Correlations among tailings indicated that recovery of sulfide copper by flotation was directly related to the sulfide copper content. Empirical equations derived from flotation data provided average values for unrecoverable copper and for recovery efficiency. Flotation response of copper mill tailings may be predicted from the equations. Data from cyanide leaching provides an equation describing the limiting high values for removal of copper by this method.

Various alternating current (ac) methods can localize faults in mining power cables. Several methods considered by the Bureau of Mines in this report are the Murray loop for short circuits, wherein a bridge provides proportional distance to the fault; capacitance measurements for open conductors; inductance measurements for shorted conductors; phase comparison, high speed recordings of voltage and current in the faulted state are compared with normal voltage and current with the difference being a function of impedance change and impedance change being a function of fault location; and standing wave measurements, detecting the resonance of the length of cable to a fault (either short or open). Portable capacitance bridges are presently available for the second method, and the fourth method is well developed for use on large power distribution systems. Because it utilizes pulses rather than ac, the time domain reflectometer (TDR) method of fault locating was not included in this investigation. However, a comparative evaluation between this versatile method and the Murray loop might prove advantageous in locating high resistance faults.

The Bureau of Mines investigated separating copper-nickel mattes to recover a copper-rich fraction suitable for processing by conventional copper metallurgical processes and a nickel-rich fraction suitable for processing in a hydrometallurgical nickel circuit. Distribution of cobalt and precious metals between the copper and nickel fractions was also determined. A matte containing a nominal 65 pct Cu, 9 pct Ni, 4 pct Fe, and 20 pct S was separated into a copper fraction that comprised 80 pct of the matte weight and contained 70 pct Cu and <1.5 pct Ni, plus a nickel fraction that contained 40 pct Ni and 30 pct Cu. Recoveries of copper and nickel into their respective fractions were 90 pct and 87 pct. These results were obtained in a laboratory flotation cell at a matte grind of 90 pct minus 500 mesh and a pH of 12.4, using 1.7 pounds DPG (diphenylguanidine) per ton of matte as collector and frother. Magnetic separation was used to remove metallic iron-nickel alloy from the copper fractions. Distribution of cobalt was about 70 pct to the nickel fraction and 30 pct to the copper fraction. Silver reported predominately to the copper fraction, while Au, Pt, and Pd were essentially entirely recovered in the nickel fraction.

The object of this program was to design and build a self-contained system for remote monitoring of the atmosphere in mines. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line as the primary communication channel and also has the capability of using 208 Hz in the ELF band for wireless transmission through the earth. The depth for through-the-earth trans- mission is expected to be about 80 to 90 meters in high conductivity soil and is limited by the noise level in the ELF band-pass filters. The underground components of the TEM System are energized by mine power through a battery charger - storage battery power supply. In the event of mine power failure the battery capacity is more than sufficient for one week&apos;s operation with interrogations every four hours.

Rate of gas diffusion in reservoir oil has been investigated in an effort to explain the variation in oil characteristics observed in the Weber Sandstone reservoir, Rangely field, Colorado. Coefficients of gas diffusion were determined experimentally for the Rangely oil system and used in a mathematical simulation of gas diffusion during the probable life of the Rangely reservoir, estimated at 65 million years. The simulator involved solution of Fick&apos;s law for diffusion in two dimensions by the method of finite difference and successive over-relaxation. The results show that continuing gas diffusion is a logical explanation for the variation in oil characteristics at Rangely and that the pattern of gas distribution by diffusion in an asymmetrical reservoir will not conform to structural contours as originally proposed.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. This publication presents a tabulation of oven-and beehive-coke plants in the United States as well as pertinent statistical data on the number, capacity, kind, and condition of the ovens. Coke is an essential raw material in pig-iron production and the coal-chemical materials produced during the coking process are used to manufacture fertilizers, paints, plastics, synthetic rubber, explosives, detergents, nylon, pharmaceuticals; dyes, and many other products necessary to the high standard of living in this country. In table 1 the oven-coke plants in the United States on December 31, 1959, are listed. This shows the name and address of the company, location of the plant, classification or type of ownership, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, and the coal-chemical materials produced. The "furnace" plants I are those owned by iron and steel companies and most of them are integrated with blast furnaces to facilitate transportation of raw materials for steel making. Furnace plants represented 87 percent of the total coking capacity and their average annual capacity was 1. 3 million tons. The "merchant" plants are those associated with chemical companies, gas utilities, as well as those that produce metallurgical, industrial, and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials for sale on the open market. These coke plants are smaller than furnace plants and in 1959 their average coke capacity was only 520 thousand tons annually. On December 3l, 1959, there were 54 furnace and 20 merchant oven-coke plants in existence in the United States.

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine problems associated with the use of ferrous fractions from urban refuse as melting stock for steelmaking and to evaluate the resulting steel products. The study involved 50-pound ingots from laboratory melts and 50-pound ingots from 1-ton electric-arc-furnace melts. The 50 pound ingots from the laboratory melts and the arc-furnace melts were hot rolled to provide material for mechanical and corrosion testing. Results obtained in the study include the following: Most steels rolled successfully and exhibited acceptable surface and edge condition. Tensile strengths of the plain carbon steels were not significantly affected by copper up to concentrations of 0.65 pct and were not affected by tin content up to 0.16 pct. Yield strength increased with increasing copper and tin contents, and impact strength decreased with increasing tin content. Hardness increased slightly with increasing copper content. In general, properties of the steel produced were not measurably affected by charge composition (that is, melting stock), melting practice, or method of scrap preparation.

"INTRODUCTION In city smoke-abatement work it is customary to require approval of the sizing of fuel-burning equipment. This is to insure that, with reasonable attention, the equipment can be operated essentially smokelessly, having such features as ample furnace volume and air supply. To answer the many inquiries that come to the Bureau of Mines as to what dimensions are acceptable and standard, the requirements of a number of smoke-abatement ordinances have been tabulated.CONCLUSIONSStudy of these tabulations shows that even after many years of fuel-burning practice and experience there is no common standard. Variations in the requirements for the same type of equipment under the same conditions of operation are great. This causes considerable difference in installation costs. Over-all costs being affected, the competitive positions of different types of fuel-burning equipment are also affected. It is apparent that there is a lack of information as to proper dimensions that is commonly accepted as authoritative.DISCUSSIONTable 1 gives the minimum furnace-setting heights required by various cities for mechanical underfeed stokers installed under H.R.T. boilers. Figure 1 shows a typical installation. The dimension given for each case is the distance from the dead plate of the stoker to bottom of boiler shell, unless otherwise noted. As shown in the table, different cities use different size-classification systems; it is not possible to make complete, exact, direct comparisons. Table la gives a comparison for various cities, showing the approximate percentage difference in H.R.T. furnace-setting heights required from those recommended by the Stoker Manufacturers' Association arbitrarily chosen to serve as a basis of comparison. The percentages are approxi¬mate because they were calculated as if all heights as given were measured from the dead plate of the stoker. In two cases a lower height is permitted, in a number of cases the height may be the same, and in a number of cases the height must be greater. The percentage increase goes to 100 in one case. Lack of uniformity is quite evident."

Oil was successfully injected into the tuyeres of the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace. Determinations were made for the minimum oil addition necessary to permit the maximum available blast temperature of 2,250° F. and the maximum oil rates at blast temperatures of 1,900°, 2,000°, and 2,100° F. From these tests, the upper and lower levels of high-temperature heat input, which limit the smoothly operating furnace, were established. Substantial coke saving was realized with maximum oil injection. Oil-to-coke replacement ratios have been calculated for various conditions, and oil is compared with natural gas and moisture in somewhat general terms. A study of the effect of variations in slag volume and basicity on the sulfur content of the metal at high sulfur loads was made.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYIn connection with a program of research work on coal at its Southern Experiment Station, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, conducts washability studies of samples of coal from coal fields in Alabama and other Southern States in which commercially important deposits of coal occur. The first such study on coal from a bed in the Arkansas field has been completed, and the results are presented in this report.One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data in connection with the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of good coking coal. Such information is important from the standpoint of conservation in that it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will yield a good grade of coking coal with a minimum of losses of coal in the rejects.The coal on which this report is based was obtained by underground and tipple sampling at the quality mine of the Quality Excelsior Coal Co. about 3 miles east of Hackett, Ark. This mine operates in the Upper Hartshorne bed, which, as the main source of coal in what is known as the Hackett-Excelsior district, yields an excellent grade of low-volatile coking coal, which is marketed at steel plants in Colorado and California. Production from this bed by the major producers in the Hackett Excelsior district was at the rate of about 125,760 tons annually in 1949, according to the Keystone Coal Buyers Manual. 2/In the laboratory, the tipple sample was crushed to 6-inch top size and screened on a 2-inch round-hole screen. The 2-inch to 0 undersize, amounting to 71.4 percent of the total sample, was fractionated into a series of screen sizes and float-and-sink products to get data for determining the washability characteristics of the coal. Before the screening and float-and-sink tests were made, however, machine cuttings, which are now gobbed underground, were added to the 2-inch to 0 sample. Enough of these cuttings were added so that the resulting mixture was considered representative of what the 2-inch to 0 run-of-mine coal would be if all machine cuttings, including the part now being gobbed, were brought to the tipple as a part of the run-of-mine coal.The mixture obtained referred to in this report as the run-of-mine or raw coal."

Bureau of Mines laboratory tests show that ilmenite concentrates with titanium dioxide contents as low as 33 wt--pct can be beneficiated to produce a crystalline substitute for natural rutile suitable for direct chlorination. The synthesized product prepared by a three-step procedure was comparable with natural rutile in titanium content. Reduction smelting of ilmenite removes iron as a pig iron byproduct, and the remaining slag phase is greatly enriched in titanium. Oxidation of the slag in the presence of phosphorus¬bearing slag additive converts the titanium-bearing phases to discrete rutile crystals and a glass phase containing most of the associated impurities. Rutile is separated from the glassy impurities by attrition scrubbing ground slag in dilute phosphoric or sulfuric acid solutions. Tests made in a laboratory fluid-bed reactor show that synthetic rutile responds to chlorination at the same rate as natural rutile and that more than 95 pct of the titanium contained in the feedstock was extracted as titanium tetrachloride.

COUNTRIES of the Near East, with the world&apos;s largest and insist prolific petroleum resources, produced nearly 277 percent of the world&apos;s estimated total output of crude& oil in 1964 and accounted for about 60 percent of world exports of this commodity. Although petroleum largely dominated the mineral industry of tine area, production of antimony, chromium, copper, mercury, boron, potash, and phosphate rock was of world significance. Production of crude oil in Near East countries reached a record high of 7,520,000 barrels per day in 1964, an increase of nearly 11 percent over that of 1963. Kuwait maintained its position as the leading producer, accounting for almost 28 percent of the area&apos;s output. Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq followed with 22.5, 22.2, and 16.5 percent of total area output, respectively. Despite record production, the Near East, proved crude oil reserve remained in excess of 211 billion barrels, or more than two-thirds of the estimated world proved crude oil reserve.

The Bureau of Mines developed a radiotracer method for detecting the contribution of selected components and additives to thermally induce deposits of turbine aircraft fuels. Fuels were examined before and after 52 weeks of storage at 130° F. Of particular concern was the influence of aromatic hydrocarbon fuel constituents on thermal-stability quality of jet fuels during storage. A microfuel coker test apparatus was used to thermally stress the test fuels and blends, and the resultant contribution to deposits of selected fuel components, labeled with carbon-14, was determined by radioactive-counting techniques. Ninety-one blends of five test fuels with carbon-14-labeled fuel additives or components were prepared, tested, stored for 52 weeks at 130° F, and reanalyzed for deposit-forming tendency. These additives included two anti-oxidants, a metal deactivator, and a corrosion inhibitor. Of the labeled hydrocarbon fuel systems studied, the greatest reaction was observed in blends containing methyl-and ethyl-substituted indenes. Other aromatic types also showed some contribution to the deposits. Three of the additives showed a marked tendency to degrade and react during storage and thermal stress. A cresol antioxidant, however, barely contributed to deposit formation. Oleic acid interacted with cadmium present in aircraft fuel systems and produced deleterious effects upon the thermal-stability quality of the fuel.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a research study of the geochemistry of the Smackover Formation to determine what geochemical relationships are useful in exploration for and production of oil and gas. Samples of oil, gas, brine, and rock were collected and analyzed. The oilfied brines were analyzed by methods recommended by the American Petroleum Institute and by tentative methods of the American Society for Testing and Materials. The crude oils were analyzed by Bureau of Mines methods; the gas, by Bureau of Mines methods; and the rocks, by wet-chemical, atomic absorption, and neutron activation methods. The results were correlated and interpreted, and several geochemical relationships useful in exploration and production were found. These include the type and class of brine, organic constituents in the brine, redox potential, in situ temperature and pressure of brine, degree of sulfate and carbonate saturation of brine, and halide concentrations in the brine.

THE STATISTICAL tables in this chapter present, country by country, the mineral production of the world in 1949-50. The figures are on a mine basis, unless otherwise indicated, except for cement, coke, and steel, which are measured at the processing plant. The tables are essentially a retabulation, by countries, of the 53 commodity world tables appearing in the various chapters of this volume. For lack of comprehensive information, data for the following minerals are excluded: Andalusite, aplite, asphalt, boron, bromine, calcite (optical), calcium chloride (natural), carbon dioxide, clay, columbium (niobium), diatomite (kieselguhr), dumortierite, emery, garnet (abrasive), gem stones (other than diamonds), germanium, greensand, grindstones, helium, indium, iodine, kyanite, lithium, magnesium compounds (other than magnesite), meerschaum, mineral pigments, monazite, natural gas, natural gasoline, oil shale, olivine, perlite, pumice, quartz crystal, radium, sand and gravel, selenium, sillimanite, sodium salts (other than common salt), stone, strontium, sulfur (byproduct), tantalum, tellurium, thallium, topaz (industrial), tripoli) uranium, vermiculite, wollastonite, and zirconium. In addition, a few minor geographic areas for which no statistics are available, are also omitted from the tabulation; it is believed that no significant quantities of minerals are mined in any of these areas. The statistics in these tables were derived principally from questionnaires sent, in cooperation with the United States Department of State, to the governments of each country. Supplementary sources were United States consular reports, the Imperial Institute&apos;s Statistical Summary of the Mineral Industry of the British Commonwealth and Foreign Countries, other official publications of various countries, the United Nations Statistical Yearbook, the Year Book of the American Bureau of Metal Statistics, Minerais et Metaux, business magazines, and company reports. The Bureau of Mines is using characteristic X-rays produced by proton bombardment of a solid surface to provide quantitative compositional analyses of surface layers of metals. An integral X-ray yield equation has been developed that quantitatively relates the measured X-ray yield to the thickness of thin films ranging from less than a monolayer to several thousand angstroms. The use of the integral yield equation is demonstrated for the growth of a thin film by vacuum evaporation. Results are presented that show haw proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been used to determine the oxidation kinetics of iron that had been implanted with several different species of heavy ions. The sensitivity of PIXE for the measurement of very-thin-film growth kinetics is demonstrated from studies of the effect of fractional mono-layer coverages of sulfur on the initial oxidation kinetics of iron. Results are also presented in which PIXE has been used to study the redistribution of alloying elements in components of a gas turbine that had fractured due to corrosion fatigue. By combining PIXE with low-energy ion sputtering, quantitative composition depth profiles of surface layers are obtained. Examples are presented for the profiling of iron samples implanted with 25-kev nickel ions and for a platinum coating on an Fe-5Cr substrate.

The performance of six dense-medium washers was evaluated in five preparation plants. Three of the plants were making a two-product separation that produced a clean coal and a refuse; one plant employed dense-medium vessels in series to effect a primary and a secondary separation; and one plant was equipped with a two-compartment washer effecting two separations in one vessel. The separate secondary drum-type washer produced a low-ash metallurgical coal and an intermediate-ash product suitable for plant fuel or steam generation. The two-compartment washer produced a premium anthracite product and a middlings product. The sharpness-of-separation values ranged from good to excellent for the five primary separations and for the secondary separation.

The object of this program was to extend the capabilities of visual paging systems both in size and function. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line for communication, monitoring, and remote control. A central station, using a mini-computer, transmits signals by phase inversion modulation of a 16,384 Hz carrier to as many as 999 remote units. The remote unit addressed returns an echo to indicate that it is functioning and, in the case of monitor units, to convey the monitor data. Magnetically latched display discs, which can be seen from both sides when posted, are used for visual paging. Lists of the addresses of posted pages, unanswered pages, and non-echoing units are prepared by the central station computer. The system was designed to be intrinsically safe and should operate for three months on a 12-volt lantern battery.

Bangladesh, whose population probably passed 100 million by yearend, remained one of the poorest countries in the world, with a per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of $126.2 Its only economically significant mineral production was natural gas. A few other minerals or mineral-based commodities were also produced, generally for local consumption. These included cement, clays, nitrogenous fertilizers, limestone, salt, steel, and pilot plant production of ilmenite and rutile. Exploration for oil was a continuing quest, which was hindered by a lack of funding and a hesitancy on the part of foreign petroleum companies to make long-term or expensive exploration commitments. PODUCTION AND TRADE Production of natural gas continued to increase as more use was being made of the abundant gas reserves variously put at between 7 and 16 trillion cubic feet. The main consumers were nitrogenous fertilizer producers and electric powerplants, but other industries were converting to natural gas from imported coal or fuel oil wherever possible.
