An examination of the physical properties of manganese ores is being made at the Mississippi. Valley Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Missouri. The object of the study is to find out how much these ores can be beneficiated by such processes as jigging, tabling, magnetic separation, and flotation. Some. of the results were given in an earlier report.4 Eighty samples obtained from various prospects and mines throughout the country have been examined; this is a very small part of those that should be examined before the work can be a definite factor in-the appraisal of manganese ores or the guide in beneficiation which the operators seek. The ore deposits are not expected to reach to great depths vertically, after the manner of copper and gold, but in lateral distribution their greater extent is notable. This applies particularly to the residual and replacement deposits of manganese.

This report summarizes the work performed by the Bureau of Mines on the development of analytical procedures for determining metallic and interstitial impurities in high-purity tungsten. Fourteen published methods and seven unpublished methods are briefly described. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, in microgram to higher quantity levels, can be determined by several methods. Trace levels of 29 metallic impurity elements can be determined by optical spectrography, X-ray spectrography, and other instrumental methods.

The mineral industry in Burundi was a minor contributor to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at just $1 billion for 19812. Coffee and tea continued as the Nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports consisted of small tonnages of wolframite, cassiterite, and baetnasite. Burundi's trade balance of payments situation worsened in 1981, with import payments more than double export revenues. Petroleum imports alone equaled 46% of the export revenue total. By year-end, the only indigenous fossil fuel source to have been found in Burundi was peat, which the Government had been attempting to develop to alleviate some of the petroleum import requirements. In June 1981 the Irish Peat Development Authority, Bord na Mona, signed a 4-year contract with the Burundian Government to supply technical staff for the ongoing peat project work there. Funding for the project was provided by the VS. Agency for International Development and the Government of Ireland. The new contract, which was an extension of ongoing peat research there, represented Burundi's increased awareness of the value of its large peat reserves for both energy and agricultural uses. At yearend, Burundi's Ministry of Public Works and Mines was does to selecting a contractor to study the feasibility of developing Burundi's phosphate deposits. The study would determine the potential for establishing fertilizer production facilities based on the country's phosphate reserves at Matongo-Bandaga, The study's specific objectives are to prove mineral reserve tonnage and grade, draw up mining and processing facility designs, estimate capital and production costs, and conduct a regional market and distribution survey. The cost of the study was estimated at slightly over $1 million, and it should take approximately 16 months to complete. The proposed project will mark the Burundian Government's first step in its plan to exploit on a large scale its natural mineral resources for advancing its agriculture-based economy. Burundi was dependent on imports, which are expensive to transport inland from coastal ports, to supply its domestic requirements for fertilizer. The act (36 Stat., 369) that established the Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior defined as part of the bureau's province and duty the making of "diligent investigation of the methods of mining, especially in relation to safety of miners and the appliances best adapted to prevent accidents," and it authorized the bureau from time to time to make such public reports of its work and investiga- tions as the Secretary of the Department of the Interior may direct, with the recommendations of the bureau. The national mine-rescue and first-aid conference was projected in the hope that it would be a factor in increasing safety in the mining industry through the recommendation of better and safer methods of conducting mine-rescue operations, more efficient methods of extend- ing and giving training in the use of artificial-breathing apparatus, and approved and more effective methods of administering first aid to injured miners and of training miners in first-aid work. The bureau feels warranted in publishing the resolutions adopted by the conference as a guide to mine workers and others concerned in obtaining greater safety in mining, and in presenting such extracts from the discussion as indicate the reason for the adoption of any particular method. In issuing this bulletin, however, the bureau does not indorse these resolutions in whole or in part as a final ex- pression of its views regarding the best method or procedure in any case. It does believe, however, that the resolutions furnish an excel- lent starting point from which to develop a standard code of pro- cedure in mine-rescue and first-aid work. It will be noted that in some important cases further information is necessary before any standard procedure can be recommended, par- ticularly as regards types of bandages, methods of resuscitation, the use of stimulants, the cumulative effect of poisonous gases, the diet of men engaged in rescue work, the physiologic effect of the pressure

This report describes three coal mine ventilation studies by the Bureau of Mines in which sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) was used as a tracer gas. One of these studies was conducted to determine air movement and leakage in a sealed area. Another was run to determine the ventilation efficiency of a bleeder system. Finally, a study was made of air leakage across permanent stoppings of parallel intake airways. These studies proved sulfur hexafluoride to be a useful addition to the equipment commonly used in coal mine ventilation analysis.

Lower costs associated with hands-on training in donning and using a CSE ,self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). Background In June 1987, the Mine Safety and Heath Administration (MSHA) issued an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) requiring that all persons entering underground coal mines must be given bands-on SCSR training. The ETS will shortly be replaced by a new standard requiring this hands-on training. Bureau of Mines research has shown that the most effective means of delivering this training is to have the trainee go through a six-step training procedure while in a kneeling position. Once the miner has looped the neckstrap over his or her head, he or she completes the donning sequence in this order: 1) activate oxygen; 2) insert mouthpiece; 3) put on nose clips; 4) put on goggles; 5) adjust neck and waist straps; and 6) replace miner's cap and prepare to move out. This procedure is repeated until the miner demonstrates that he or she is proficient at the task.

"The production of silica and magnesia crucibles in the induction furnace was attempted and achieved in the laboratory of the Pacific Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. This work was undertaken at the request of other stations for laboratory crucibles of a certain specified wall thickness and capacity.The essential new parts of this work are the development of a technique for the high-frequency furnace production of silica crucibles of greater wall thickness than could be readily fabricated from commercial fused silica, and for heavy-walled magnesia. crucibles of great density and mechanical strength. A considerable bode of patent literature on the Production of fused silica ware in resistor-type furnaces was examined, but it furnished no significant help for the present problem. Similarly sintered magnesia refractories are often made for technical purposes, but for use at temperatures of 2000o C. or over, the material must be sintered at higher temperatures than can be attained by combustion firing, and the very great shrinkage encountered at these temperatures requires special methods. Small crucibles. of magnesia fused in the electric arc have been made by Tritton and Hansen,3 but the practical size of such containers is very limited.Many different methods of making crucibles in the induction furnace were tried before satisfactory results were obtained. The following description covers only the most satisfactory method, which produced crucibles of excellent quality in a reasonable time and with a moderate expenditure of power and materials."

A series of mine design accidents in the late 1980s resulted in a major research program at the University of New South Wales, Australia, aimed at developing pillar and mine design guidelines. A database of both failed and unfailed Australian underground coal mine pillar case studies was compiled. A procedure was developed to enable the effective width of rectangular pillars to be taken into account. The database was analyzed statistically using the maximum likelihood method, both independently and as a combined data set with the more extensive South African database. Probabilities of failure were correlated to factors of safety. It was found that there was less than a 4% variance in pillar design extraction ratios resulting from each of these approaches. There is a remarkable consistency between the design formulas developed from back-analysis of the two separate national pillar databases containing many different coal seams and geological environments.

1.0 FRAMEWORK FOR COMPARISON This document describes the decision factors that bear on the selection of the modulation process for the wireless underground medium frequency (MF) communication system. The selected modulation process must satisfy the Bureau of Mines stated objective of improving general communications within an underground mine. The improvement being sought includes the development of a wireless communication technology of measurable benefit to both mine safety and mine productivity. The improvement will allow wireless communications paths to exist between roving miners. The wireless communication paths will also be made compatible with the existing underground telephone system to extend paging and voice communication throughout the underground mine. The new wireless equipment will include man-pack, vehicular, repeater, and base station transceivers. Repeaters and base stations will feature coupling networks for interfacing with the existing telephone circuits. Frequency modulation (FM) and single sideband (SSB) modulation processes are analyzed in view of the special conditions associated with underground mining. Of primary importance is the tremendous electrical noise generated in an operating mine that could adversely affect communications quality. High noise coupled with high attenuation rate of near field signals forces the communication system to be inherently short range. To reduce front-end loader (FEL) collision accidents by detecting obstacles in the rear blind area. The Problem Federal regulations require an audible backup alarm to activate when an FEL is backing. Since the device is constantly being activated, the warning soon becomes a normal part of the mine environment and is less effective as a warning device. Also, when several machines are working together, it is difficult to detect by ear alone just which machine is backing. Approach The Bureau defined the location for hazard detection to include an area extending 15 to 20 ft behind the rear bumper of an FEL. Then, existing surveillance and detection technology was assembled, ruggedness, and applied to the FEL's rear blind area to form a new discriminating backup alarm system employing either infrared light, ultrasonics or radar

This report describes the feasibility test of an electromagnetic method for locating, boreholes, with or without casing, that have been drilled in conjunction with mining operations but whose location with respect to the tunnel is not precisely known. The first tests were conducted with the cooperation of the Kerr-McGee Corporation, Church Rock Mining Operations, New Mexico, in September 1977. These tests demonstrated that accuracies of better than ±15% of range and ±1° of bearing can be achieved with a simple system and setups. Subsequent tests, in January 1978, on a horizontally drilled pipe line river crossing application, by Ti tan Contractors of Sacramento, California, demonstrated that accuracies of better than one-half percent of range and a few tenths of one degree of bearing can be achieved by using refined techniques. The demonstration tests were done at ranges on the order of 100 to 200 feet but the method is capable of working at much greater distances.

Heat-capacity measurements of sodium dimolybdate (Na2Mo207) and sodium ditungstate (Na2W207) were conducted over the temperature range from 51° to 298° K. The entropies of the two compounds at 298.15° K were calculated from the heat-capacity values and were used, in conjunction with other entropy data, to evaluate the entropies of formation of the compounds from their constituent elements and oxides.

The data presented in this report are the results, to date, of an ongoing Pittsburgh Research Center Disaster5Prevention research program on the explosion hazards associated with blasting operations in noncoal mines. Laboratory and experimental mine tests have shown that oil shale and sulfide ore dusts can be ignited given the proper predispersed dust concentrations, particle size, and kerogen or sulfur content. Methane (CH) gas may also4be present in deep oil shale formations and can pose a significant added hazard to underground blasting operations. The most common explosive used for blasting in oil shale had been ANFO, a combination of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil; blasting in sulfide ore had used ANFO and/or dynamites. Tests conducted at the cannon gallery at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fair chance, Fayette County, PA, provided a means of evaluating the relative incendivity characteristics of new and existing explosive products. Three explosives—a pumpable emulsion-ANFO blend, a packaged water gel, and an emulsion blasting agent—exhibited low-incendive qualities compared with other more highly incendive products such as ANFO and some dynamites. Based on the data collected during numerous full-scale blasts in oil shale and sulfide ore mines, the low-incendive products significantly reduced or eliminated the ignition hazards while at the same time providing effective fragmentation of the rock. Based on the positive results from the gallery and field testing, low-incendive explosives, coupled with good blasting procedures, show promise in reducing dust and/or gas ignitions associated with blasting operations in oil shale and sulfide ore mining applications.

This paper describing the mining methods employed and setting forth prevailing, costs at the property, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with properties in various mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Vipond mine is a gold property located at Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and operated by the Vipond Consolidated Mines (Ltd.). For the past fiscal year (ended July 31. 1930) ore was mined and milled at the rate of 310 tons per day, and the value of the bullion produced was $896,397.61.

The Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive investigation of the old lead diggings in the Wisconsin portion of the Upper Mississippi lead-zinc field in September 1947 to determine whether enough lead was present in shallow deposits to justify exploitation by modern open-pit methods. Because of the large number of areas of surface diggings, it was necessary to limit the investigation to only a few representative areas. Initial studies, therefore, included test pitting and hand auger-drill sampling at two sites n Grant County and one site in Lafayette County to determine whether further extensive sampling in that area was warranted. Results indicated that certain portions of the area contained substantial amounts of lead and, zinc; accordingly, more detailed sampling was undertaken, and the results will be described in a later report. Another phase of the general investigation was drilling and test pitting at the Nigger Jim Lafayette County. This 10 the third of the series and summarizes the work on the White property to develop the western extension of the Big Dick ere body, where four churn-drill holes totaling 679 feet were drilled. Inclusion of the White property in the study was justified because old reports indicated (1) production of ore from mines in the vicinity disclosed a high ratio of lead to zinc, (2) ore was present in the west heading of the Big Dick mine when it closed, and the attitude of the Big Dick ore body was such that a vertical hole would encounter ore that might be present.

Active and abandoned mine sites can be an irresistible- - and sometimes deadly - - draw for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly children and young adults. Despite repeated warnings, posted signs, and fencing, tragedies involving accidents on active and abandoned mine property continue to make headlines, especially with the arrival of warmer weather and the summer months ahead. Over the last few years, there have been dozens of tragic incidents involving children and adults ventur­ing onto active and abandoned mine property. They include: A 16-year-old youth suffered fatal injuries after his all-terrain vehicle became airborne in an accident at a gravel mine near Albany, New York. A young boy was electrocuted when he contacted a high-voltage power line while sliding down a stockpile at a sand and gravel mine in Grand Island, Nebraska during its off-shift hours.

IN THIS RUN, THE ORIGINAL VENTILATION NETWORK HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO INCLUDE NEW INTAKE AND RETURN AIRSHAFTS AT THE WEST MAINS.
