Coke Since the beginning of manufacturing of metallurgical coke in the United States, which dates from about 1859, Pennsylvania has main tamed supremacy in coke production Available statistics for the year 1880 show an output of 3,338,300 short tons, which was neatly trebled by the end of the succeeding 10 years. From this time on the increase was steady, though not rapid, and in 1922 the total production was 13,991,892 tons, which is approximately 37 per cent of the total coke production of the United States. The main reason for the rapid development of the coke industry in Pennsylvania lies in the abundance of coals particularly adapted to beehive coking, for which purpose the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville district has long been looked upon as standard At first practically all metallurgical coke was made in beehive ovens, the only exception being the short lived and wasteful method of coking in piles, byproduct owns did not make then appearance until after 1893 The suitability of a beehive coking coal cannot be accurately predicted from its chemical analysis, but it can be said, perhaps, that the volatile matter should be about 32 per cent, and that the oxygen content should not be mole than 10 pet cent or less than 4 per cent The sulphur and phosphorus content should be small-not over 1 25 per cent sulphur and under 0 02 pen cent phosphorus-and the ash content should not be over 7 per cent The Pittsburgh bed at Connellsvnlle fills these requirements well, as may be seen from the following representative analysis. Illegitimate loads on a mine dc power distribution system can be detected by measuring a superimposed ac current. To implement such a scheme, a 10-volt, 3-kHz voltage is applied at each dc power substation. By this means, the mine dc power distribution network, consisting of a feeder and trolley wires with a grounded rail return, is caused to serve also as a 3-kHz ac distribution network.

A series of 45 zirconium ingots has been cast by the consumable electrode arc melting process with the object of analyzing the effects of power input from 50 to 230 kilowatts and reduced pressure furnace atmosphere to improve the quality of regular 8-inch-diameter production ingots made thereby. Electrode consumption rate, molten pool volume, melting efficiency, sidewall quality, arc stability, and yield efficiency are considered. The use of direct current and alternating current is studied. In conclusion, reduced pressure furnace operation is shown to promote electrical efficiency, ingot homogeneity, high metal yield, and are stability. INTRODUCTION Zirconium is a particularly difficult metal to melt because of its affinity for atmospheric gases and its solvent properties when molten. In addition, zirconium sponge as produced by the boll process contains minor amounts of magnesium chloride, which cause severe spattering luring melting, because of these difficulties with zirconium, and its sister metal titanium, near techniques have been developed to permit production of commercial size ingots. Among the more promising is the consumable electrode arc melting method.

A dilute sulfuric-acid leach was developed for extracting lead and copper from lead blast furnace mattes and the chemistry was defined. The possible application of Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans to the problem of salvaging lead and copper from blast furnace mattes was also investigated. Operating conditions were varied to determine their effect on the oxidation and hence extraction of lead and copper from the matte. Conditions varied were temperature, pH, reaction time, aeration in the slurry, and particle size of the matte. A set of optimum conditions were developed that resulted in maximum lead and copper sulfide oxidation. Tests employing these optimum conditions resulted in 82.3 percent of the lead and 98.7 percent of the copper being extracted by a dilute acid leach, while maximum lead and copper extracted using F. ferrooxidans was 69.8 percent of the lead and 78.4 percent of the copper. Tests conducted with a different sample of blast furnace matte indicated that the dilute acid leach might have wide application in extracting lead and copper from other such blast furnace mattes.

Losses of alloying metals in furnace flue dusts, grinding swarfs, and mill scale produced during the manufacture of stainless steel are substantial. About 25 million lb Cr, 8.7 million lb Ni, and 150,000 lb Mo and other critical metals can be made available annually for recycling by a process developed by the Bureau of Mines. Stainless steel wastes pelletized with a portland cement binder were reduced in a small electric-arc furnace by a two-stage process to produce a recyclable alloy containing Cr, Ni, Mn, and Fe. The initial reduction was with carbon; the second, with ferrosilicon. Results are compared with previously reported laboratory induction melting tests. A 2,000-lb demonstration test of the process in a commercial electric-arc furnace is also described. Data are also presented on three 1,500-lb tests made using various slag conditions in the electric-arc furnace. Recoveries up to 99 pct of the Fe, Cr, and Ni contents of stainless steel wastes were obtained in using the process.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments to determine the influence of exhaust rebreathing on emissions from various gasoline and diesel engines. Tests were conducted that simulated operation of engines in nonventilated spaces as well as in spaces with partially restricted ventilation. Results of these tests showed that exhaust rebreathing can have a marked effect on exhaust emissions and thus on the composition of the air in the working space. For the case of restricted ventilation, unacceptably high (greater than 50 ppm) levels of CO in the air of the working space resulted from exhaust rebreathing rates as low as 8 pct exhaust in the engine's intake. Operation in a nonventilated space resulted in highly critical CO levels (fatal in a few minutes) at times corresponding to 1 to 3 pounds of fuel consumed per 1,000 cu ft of space. Tests involving spaces of various sizes showed that volume of the air space [per se] is not important--the primary variable is fuel consumed per unit volume of air space.

As a basis for recommendation and for instruction of bureau engineers the considered opinion of the bureau is expressed in "decisions" of its Mine Safety Board, approved by the Director. Ten of these decisions were discussed, in Information Circular 6091.3 Decision No. 11, approved by Scott Turner, Director, on February 28, 1929, is as follows: "In the interest of safety, the Bureau of Mines, Department of. Commerce, recommends that in coal mines, haulage and (or) hoisting be kept in intake air as far as possible." As in the case of previous mine-safety decisions, the subject matter covered by this decision has frequently come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines through the reports of its mining engineers on explosion disasters and in accident-hazard investigations.

Many coal companies have a system for checking men into and out of the mine , and generally such systems appear to be perfectly sound and adequate . However , when the real test comes at the time of a mine disaster , too often the system is found to have failed , and hours and sometimes days pass before it is known how many men are in the mine and who they are . Most of the systems in use , when properly maintained , are adequate for the routine work of the mine , and some of them may prove adequate at the time of a mine disaster . All systems , however , depend upon proper supervision and strict adherence to the system .

Determine what diameter piping is necessary to obtain sufficient water flow to spray nozzles used for dust suppression. Approach A simplified, diagrammatic method of calculating the flow of water through a proposed system consisting of a supply line and two banks of spray nuzzles is outlined. How It Works The pressure versus flowrate of the supply at the tapping point must be known or measured. The supply curve of typical city water at a 1 ¼ -inch pipe outlet is shown by the lowest curve in Figure 1. A supply curve for a typical pump fed from an open sump is shown by the middle curve. The combination of these, the supply curve of a pump fed by the city water supply is shown by adding the lower two curves to get the upper curve. A pump supply curve showing flowrate versus pressure is usually supplied by the manufacturer. The water supply line flow curve can be determined by measuring the time required to fill a 55 gallon barrel at various valve settings to determine flow, and by measuring corresponding pressures at the valve with a gauge.

To prevent injury to miners caused by violent whipping of mining machine trailing cables. Approach: The hydraulic cable controls are adjusted to reduce whip by visual reference of the cable sag to the height of the cable guide. How It Works: The cable sag is adjusted by visually estimating its height above the ground, at a specific reference distance behind the machine. This reference distance is measured horizontally back from the point where the cable leaves the cable guide. The Reference distance is 2H where H equals the height of the cable guide above the floor. See Figure 1. Cable sag should be less during rewinding than during unwinding. During cable unwinding, the cable height (at the refer¬ence distance) should equal 1/31-1. During rewinding, the cable height should equal ½ H. Field tests were made on several manufacturers' equipment after adjusting cable sag as above. Cable whip was greatly reduced for all, and whip was almost eliminated on a shuttle car equipped with a Joy Manufacturing Company 500108-104 cable reef and the newer (nonporous) shuttle valve. The following directions are for adjusting cable sag on a shuttle car equipped with a Joy Manufacturing Company 500108-104 Cable Reel equipped with the newer shuttle valve. Cable sag can be adjusted on machines equipped with other cable reels and valves by referring to the manufacturer's manual and making the appropriate cable valve adjustments.

Processing of nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-des liming and anionic flotation of calcium-activated silica has been investigated using innovative procedures as a means of improving operating costs. Areas chosen for cost-cutting evaluation were grinding, fine screening, and water conservation and reclamation. The investigation was performed on Marquette range nonmagnetic taconites in the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center flotation pilot plant, at feed rates ranging between 900 and 1,100 lb/hr. With fully integrated water reclamation, flotation concentrates containing 65.8 percent Fe and 3.4 percent Si02 were made in the best operating period, with accompanying weight and iron recoveries of 40 and 74 percent, respectively. During this same period, the estimated cost of both flotation and water reclamation reagents was only $0.80 per ton of concentrate (1968 pricing basis). This cost is about 15 percent lower than obtained previously at this Center for flotation reagents only. The investigation demonstrated additional potential savings in operating costs of approximately $0.96 per ton of concentrate through autogenous grinding as a substitute for ballmilling. Fine screening of intermediate concentrates was employed advantageously, but the frequency of blinding may be a factor militating against use of the screen in this flotation system.

The Geophysical section of the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding the application of geophysical methods to the location of small, buried metallic objects. The object of this paper is fourfold: (1) To sketch as briefly and non- technically as possible the principles underlying the operation of several elec- trical geophysical methods of prospecting applicable to the finding of small, buried metallic objects; (2) to point out the possibilities and limitations of these methods; (3) to present, whenever possible, data showing actual results obtained from their use; and (4) to enumerate and describe methods that lack scientific background or foundation.

Solvent extraction techniques were used to determine the extraction sequence of yttrium and the rare-earth elements in an amine solvent extraction system. Single-stage extraction with Primene 81-R resulted in separation factors of 3.8 between yttrium and dysprosium and 25 between yttrium and cerium. Yttrium was concentrated in the aqueous phase. EDTA and DTPA, as aqueous phase counterextractants, enhance separation factors in mine-rare-earth sulfate systems. Yttrium separation from heavy rare-earth elements exhibits marked sensitivity to the position of yttrium in the selectivity scale of the rare-earth elements with the sequestrants. Yttrium-ytterbium separation is more effective with EDTA, whereas yttrium-dysprosium separation is more effectively increased with DTPA.

Provide an inexpensive, remote actuated, stench-gas system which reduces fire warning time to underground work locations. Approach A mine's pager phone hard-wire network is used to release stench gas from pressurized canisters located near working areas. The release is initiated by placing a coded message into a control phone at some central location. How It Works Currently, in most mines, the decision to release a warning stench gas is made by mine management after communication from the mine of a fire or similar potentially dangerous situation. Stench gas is then released into the ventilation air and/or compressed air lines for dissemination throughout the mine. This can result in significant delays in warning time. Often, surface personnel must travel to distant shafts, or other release points, wasting valuable time. Also, the time for ventilation air to circulate from the surface to working locations can be long and the effectiveness of compressed air as a stench transport agent depends on whether the compressed air is being used at the face. The Bureau of Mines, through a contract with MSA Research Corporation, has designed and tested a warning system which avoids these problems. The system consists of multiple, pressurized stench-gas canisters located under-ground in the mine-ventilation network so as to provide quick dissemination of the released stench gas to working areas. Each stench-gas canister is hard-wire connected to a nearby pager phone and from there to a control phone at the surface or at a central in-mine site. In the event of a mine emergency, the canisters are activitated to release stench gas by placing a coded message into the control phone. A low amperage Signal sent from the control phone to the receiver phone closes a relay, which activates a release mechanism on the canister.

To determine the relative permeability of the soil a series of percolation tests were performed at the three locations of interest at Lanse, i.e., 3C, 03A and strip bank, and KA and KB at Kato. Soil cores were removed to 2, 8, 16, 24 and 32 inch depths with the thin wall sampler tube, each core separated from the next by about fifteen feet. Then two-foot-long thin-wall tubes were inserted into the 2, 8, and 16 inch deep holes and three-foot long tubes were inserted into the 24 and 36 inch deep holes. Each tube was tamped down about one inch further to assure a bottom seal; the tubes were filled with water and the rate of fall was measured. The test is similar to those done for septic tank percolation studies 6; but is not quantitatively related to Darcy's coefficient of hydraulic conductivity because the water can flow in three dimensions from the bottom of the tube. The measurements are dependent on the length of test, since the rate of fall is a function of the head. Therefore, it should be noted that the 24 and 32 inch deep tubes should give faster percolation rates because of the one foot greater head. At locations 03A and 3C the data show a sharp decrease in percolation at increasing depth, Table XV. However, the percolation at 03A and 32 inch depth is much higher than at 3C (0.2 vs. 0.01 inches/hour); the fragipan layer must be deeper at the 3C location since this area does experience a perched water table. On the strip bank the rates of falling head are randomly variable, appearing to be as much dependent on the particular location of insertion as on depth of placement. For example, water drained from the 16 inch tube as fast as it was added, probably into a sub-surface cavity or crevice. At Kato the tubes were more difficult to place because of interference of tree roots. For this reason 2 inch deep tubes were not inserted. These short tests at Kato were inconclusive, varying extensively when the tubes were moved. Field permeability tests were also performed in two (previously described) eight-inch diameter permeater tubes at Lanse and one at Kato. Because the soil is confined inside the tube, hydraulic conductivity can be calculated according to Darcy's flow equation. The high values reported in Table XVI experienced when the tubes were rewetted from a dry surface condition, enable us to conclude that infiltration is faster than the saturated permeability of the soil. In contrast to the falling head percolation tests, these permeability results do not show a high variation between locations.

The large amount of computer code required for this simulation model dictates that reasonable limitations be placed on some of the input variables. The program permits the following maximum sizes: 1. Ten mine car stations 2. Twenty track intersections 3. Three hundred mine cars 4. Eight motors 5. One hundred profiles 6. Twelve intersections between stations 7. Forty-five profile changes between stations 8. Thirty station pairs (routes) These may be changed by the user providing the particular computer in use has available core storage. Major Array Descriptions This section is a detailed description of four of the major arrays used in the rail haulage simulator for data storage and logical control. Other arrays are used; however, they may be considered sub¬servative to the major ones. These major variables are explained on the following pages. Motor Control Array (XXXDEF). The first 99 locations in this array are arranged according to and are developed by data input. Unit conversions are made at input time which include: 1. Tons to pounds. 2. Lead-silver deposits in the Omilak area, on the western slopes of the Darby Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines, during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons, as a part of the U.S. Department of Interior's continuing program for the development of Alaska's resources. The Omilak area was the scene of early day prospecting and mining activity. The Omilak mine, which operated from 1881 to 1890, was the second producing lode mine in Alaska; the first was a small gold mine near Sitka. Several hundred tons of ore were produced at the Omilak mina; as an indication of grade, 41 tons shipped from Omilak in 1889 contained 75 percent lead and 142 ounces of silver per ton. A prominent, nearby occurrence of lead-silver minerals, found but not explored during this period, has since become known as the Foster prospect. Subsequent exploration of this prospect revealed an abundance of massive galena occurring on an outcrop and as float scattered through limestone talus. Evidence of lead deposition, together with the generally high silver content of lead ores previously shipped from the district, indicated that deposits might be found which would be commercially valuable even in this remote area. To investigate the possibility, the Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance of the Omilak area and did bulldozer trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling at the roster prospect. Data resulting from the investigation are presented in detail in this report and are summarized in the following paragraphs.

MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations and dynamic transient-state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under the influence of natural ventilation, fans, fires, or any combination of these MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influences (varying outside temperatures), and internal influences (fires) Extensive output enables detailed, quantitative analysis of the effects that the alteration will cause to the ventilation system The program was developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU), Houghton, MI, with support from the Bureau of Mines A personal computer (PC) version of the program was completed under contract for the Bureau by MTU The purpose of this report is to document the installation and use of the PC version of the program MFIRE
