The term "konimeter" is used generally to designate a type of dust-sampling instrument that collects the dust from a small volume of air by impingement on a glass plate prepared aced with an adhesive film. The konimeter was first developed by Sir R. N. Kotze about 20 years ago and was followed a few years later by the circular-type konimeter, by which a number of samples may be collected on a glass disk. The present discussion will be confined to the circular type, as it is used most. Various techniques have been developed for using the konimeter, and many materials, such as petrolatum, mineral oil, and glycerine jelly, have been used in preparing the adhesive film. In South Africa, Australia, and Canada, where the konimeter has been employed most widely, dust samples are treated by ignition and washing before being counted. In Canada the dust samples are collected on a disk of special heat-resistant glass prepared with a film of mineral oil; the disk is then heated to a dull cherry-red in a muffle-furnace to remove the film and organic matter, cooled, and washed with a few drops of 50-percent hydrochloric acid followed by distilled water and alcohol, and then heated again to remove residue left by evaporation of the alcohol. After this treatment, the dust samples are counted under a magnification of 150 diameters with dark field illumination.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory testing of copper-bearing magnetite ore from the Poorman, Bush & Brown, and Copper Center deposits, Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska. The ores contain minor amounts of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Intimate association of these sulfides with magnetite necessitates fine grinding for adequate liberation and rejection of copper and sulfur and for the production of high-grade iron concentrate low in objectionable impurities. Laboratory tests indicated that the optimum results can be obtained by flotation of ore ground to minus-100-mesh, with subsequent wet magnetic separation treatment of the flotation tailing. A summary of results obtained by this treatment of the three samples tested is shown in table 1.

The Rambler mine is in the Douglas mining district, Albany County, Wyo. (fig. 1). The property was first operated about 1870 for gold found in the outcrop of a leached ore body. Copper and metals of the platinum group were discovered, in 1900, or soon thereafter, and intermittent mining was done until 1918, when a fire destroyed the surface plant, and the underground workings caved. The mine has since been idle. The Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from October 1942 to October 1943, with a recess period between November 1942 and August 1943. Ten diamond drill holes, totaling 1,859 linear feet, were drilled on the property (fig. 2). The mine dump was sampled after preparation with a bulldozer. Assay determination and spectrographic analyses disclosed small quantities of copper and metals of the platinum group in the samples. Determinations were made on 11 samples from the diamond drill holes and 23 samples from the mine dump. The assay results and spectrographic analyses are given in tables 1 and 2. The logs of the diamond drill holes are given in an appendix to this report.

Data on smog-forming reactivities of exhaust aldehydes are scarce. Such data were obtained by irradiating in a smog chamber typical exhaust aldehydes, individually and in exhaustlike mixtures. Observed reactivity manifestations were rate of nitrogen dioxide formation (RNO2) and yields of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. Results showed that exhaust aldehydes vary widely in reactivity. Formaldehyde showed high RNO2 reactivity but low oxidant yield; benzaldehyde, [m]-, and [p]-tolualdehyde were totally unreactive when irradiated individually; [o]-tolualdehyde was reactive. In mixtures, benzaldehyde manifested reactivity in terms of peroxybenzoyl nitrate yield. Exhaust aldehydes as a group are judged to be as reactive as the exhaust olefin group. The importance of the aldehyde contribution to exhaust reactivity and methods for assessing such contribution are discussed.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, laboratory studies of concentration were conducted at the Salt Lake City station on a sample of ore from the Lake Valley mines of the Newalpitt Fluorspar Corp. of Deming, N. Mex. The ore was reported to be representative of the type that would be mined for mill feed. The sample tested was found to be amenable to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods for the production of products that, when sintered, assayed over 44 percent Mn.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to Metals Reserve Company was ferrograde manganese grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., 0.18 percent; Al203, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent, Al2O3,Later the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.0 percent iron, and 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premiums were paid for manganese content in excess of 48 percent and iron content below 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing less than 43 percent -manganese, or more than 6 percent iron, or more than 11 percent silica plus alumina. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that maximum particle size be 12 inches and that, 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material such as table and flotation concentrates had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, oarbcnate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined."

In the course of a study of domestic Manganese resources, 2-ton representative samples of ore were taken by Bureau of Mines' engineers from the Payday claim, Weber County, and the Newcomb-claims, Rich County, Utah. The Payday No. 1 deposit is situated 13 miles northeast of Huntsville, Weber County, Utah. The manganese ore is a. replacement deposit in limestone and consists of manganese oxides imbedded 'in clay and also as the cementing agent consolidating small pebbles and pieces of quartz and limestone.

Coalbed gas content measurements are commonly used in mine safety as well as coalbed methane resource assessment and recovery applications. Gas content determination techniques generally fall into two categories: (1) direct methods which actually measure the volume of gas released from a coal sample sealed into a desorption canister and (2) indirect methods based on empirical correlations, or laboratory derived sorption isotherm gas storage capacity data. Direct gas content determination techniques may be further. subdivided into quick-crushing and extended desorption methods. The quick-crushing methods are primarily used in mine safety applications outside the United States, but have also been used for resource recovery applications. Quick-crushing methods rely on crushing the coal sample soon after collection to release all the desorbable gas, thus significantly shortening the amount of time required for desorption measurements. However, some data useful for resource recovery applications are lost. Extended desorption techniques are most commonly used for resource assessment and recovery applications where information on desorption rates is useful for reservoir modeling, and for fundamental coalbed methane research. Extended desorption methods allow the gases in the coal sample to desorb under controlled laboratory conditions until a defined low desorption rate cutoff point is reached. The sample may then be crushed to measure the amount of gas remaining within the sample. Direct method techniques for gas content measurement are the focus of this paper.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they arc required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by G. E . Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

In view of present interest in a revival of gold mining enterprises, papers dealing with the development of small gold properties are apropos. The present paper deals with the operation of a small gold property in the exploration and development stage, mining and milling 25 tons of ore daily, and indicates what may he expected in the way of mining costs under northern climatic conditions, by practicing rigid economy, at a property where disproportionate overhead costs are unavoidable bacause of the small rate of production. The output of this prospect is treated in a small amalgamation plant which has been described in a previous circular.. HISTORY Prospecting in the district was begun in 1909, and by 1911 the adjoining mines, Hollinger and McIntyre, were in operation. Actual work was begun on the Rochester claim in July, 1922, and carried on through 1924. The property was closed until 1928 when the present company took it over, together with the other holdings of the Canadel Mining Co. A small mill was started as a pilot plant on March 24, 1929, and is still in operation.

"INTRODUCTION Oxide manganese ore from the Sheep Mountain property was of intermediate grade (23.0 percent manganese) and contained silica as the major impurity. The deposit from which the ore was taken is known as the Sheep Mountain manganese property and is 8 miles west of Durkee, Oreg. Test work was done in the metallurgical laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, on representative samples cut from a 290-pound shipment of crushed ore submitted by the Oregon State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and reported to be typical of the Sheep Mountain deposit.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, as part of its mission to effect pollution abatement, conducted research to devise means for disposing of phosphatic clay wastes and reclaiming mined land. Part of the investigation was performed in a cooperative research project with 10 phosphate companies in Florida. The colloidal properties of the phosphatic clay suspensions, called slimes, make them difficult to dewater and dispose of without impoundment storage aboveground. Various reagents to flocculate and dewater these plant wastes were evaluated, and a polyethylene oxide polymer was found to function in a specialized flocculation dewatering technique. The flocculation dewatering method was investigated in bench-scale batch tests and applied in continuous dewatering tests using standard mineral-processing equipment. In continuous tests at feed rates of up to 58 liters per minute, wastes at 4 percent solids were dewatered to about 20 percent solids. About 0.8 kilogram of polymer was used for each metric ton of dry waste clay solids; processing time was about 4 minutes. Requirements for the treatment system are (1) proper mixing of the clay-waste feed and flocculant, (2) rapid removal of water as it is released, and (3) physical manipulation to promote cohesion of solids.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine if the primary gas toxicities evolved during the early (-300° C) and later (>400° C) combustion stages of mine conveyor belts could be predicted by a smoke particle characteristic. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 150°, 250°, and 1,000° C, with a furnace airflow of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, included hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide concentrations, the average smoke particle diameter (d8 and number concentration (no), and the product of the average smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgn0) Other variables included the sample and furnace temperatures and the sample mass weight loss. Results show that the inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (ldgn0), correlates directly with the hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide toxicities released in large quantities during the early and later stages of combustion.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a flotation-nitric acid leach procedure as part of the goal to maximize minerals and metals recovered from primary and secondary domestic resources. Studies were conducted on an ore that contained carbon-bearing and sulfide mineralization that rendered a portion of the ore refractory (resistant) to conventional leaching technology. The procedure investigated for treating the ore consisted of the following: (1) separation by flotation of the carbonaceous and sulfidic components from the ore, (2) leaching the flotation concentrate with nitric acid at 100° to 110° C, (3) leaching the flotation tailings with sulfuric acid, and (4) processing the combined leached slurries in a conventional manner to recover yellow cake. In step 2, HN03 is converted to gaseous products from which it is regenerated by reacting these products with air and water for further leaching. An overall uranium extraction of 96 pct was achieved by this procedure.

Among the more recent developments for breaking coal in mines is the Airdox system, in which high-pressure compressed air is conducted to the points of application by means of heavy-duty steel and copper tubing. Stray electric currents can be detected on y of the compressed-air lines, and evidence of such currents is rev led, by arcs and sparks when contact is made between the tubing and mine track or other equipment forming a current path with the track. Explosive gas is liberated in many coal mines; therefore, from the standpoint of safety, it is desirable to eliminate all possible sources of gas ignition, including stray electric currents. The purpose of this report is to reveal the source, magnitude, and possible methods of controlling stray currents in compressed-air lines that are used in connection with Airdox systems. Stray electric currents have been studied in most coal-mining localities in the United. States where Airdox equipment is used. The information given in this report is based on the find of these studies.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Page concentrator of the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Page mine and mill are located on Silver Creek, 3 miles west of Kellogg, Idaho, and 1 mile south of United States Highway No. 10. Supplies and concentrates are hauled by truck over an automobile road which connects Highway No. 10 with the property. The concentrator has capacity to treat 300 tons of ore per day and utilizes all-flotation methods of treatment. Power is supplied from the main line of the Washington Water Power Co. which runs from Spokane, Wash., to Kellogg, Idaho. Water is obtained from the mine and also from a well which is situated 1 mile distant from the concentrator and about 600 feet in elevation below the concentrator.

Some comment on data availability must be an integral part of a study such as this. For many years, the centrally planned economy nations of the world regarded as state secrets much of their mineral commodity production information, as well as a considerable body of the foreign trade information on these commodities, and virtually all reporting on their consumption. Within the past 5 years, this pattern has undergone some evolution, and although these countries still fall short of market economy countries in their willingness to publish, there has been measurable improvement. Fit, China, and then subsequently the former CMEA member countries of Eastern Europe have released in print an increasing amount of information in organized, coherent formats, although in a number of cases it is not clear that the information provided is in perfect definitional accord with market economy country practices. Thus, these recently available statistics must be carefully studied to ensure that they are provided in terms of conventional market economy definitions. At the same time that heretofore unpublished information is becoming available for the centrally planned (or formally centrally planned) economy countries, there has been a slow but steady disquieting erosion of availability of production, trade, and consumption data for market economy countries. There are evident reasons for some of these losses in information. The foremost of these relates to corporate mergers. As the number of producing or consuming firms of a given commodity in a given political jurisdiction declines, it is increasingly difficult for government agencies to protect proprietary company data. In past years, this protection was afforded by aggregating data for the several companies operating in the area, but as the number of operators diminishes this is no longer always possible. Hopefully, given this situation, companies will at least authorize release of data after a period of time, when its publication will not provide competitors with unfair access, but will make possible longer term studies.

In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. Develop an improved downhole geophone system with enhanced signal/noise ratio for collecting cross-hole seismic data used in tomographic reconstructions. Background The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in the use of cross-hole seismic tomography for detecting and monitoring leach solution flow during in situ mining. This technique requires the use of a downhole seismic energy source in one borehole and a downhole wall-locking receiver (geophone) in another borehole separated from the first by the region to be investigated. Bureau research personnel chose a commercially available air gun for use as the downhole seismic energy source. Unfortunately, commercially available downhole wall-locking geophones that the Bureau tested were difficult to operate in the field, often unreliable and generally inadequate in terms of their signal/noise ratio. Therefore, research personnel began to experiment with an alternative down-hole geophone design that could be used to collect adequate data in a wide variety of borehole and cross-hole field situations. Approach An attractive alternative geophone design would be one that would incorporate a pneumatically operated wall-locking system. As an integral part of the Bureau's existing field system, a portable, high- pressure/low-volume air compressor would have sufficient capacity to operate the air gun as well as several small high-pressure pneumatic linear actuators. This approach was the simplest and most compatible with the research activities being conducted at the site.
