To preface these remarks, it is not intended that this paper be a criticism of anyone or any organization involved in drafting the current regulations, for it appears that everyone involved in the process has made an extreme effort to be safe. We wish to show that in this case by making huge safety margins, we have created an unsafe condition in another area. That is by creating vast safety margins in the area of mobile transmitter intensity versus distance scales we have caused a severe handicap in the use of the mobile transmitter in securing blasting areas. The use of these mobile transmitters, which are absolutely essential in clearing areas where there are woods, mountains, or urban structures is virtually eliminated because of the safety factors prescribed in the regulations. We wish to show that these mobile transmitter safety factors are much too great, and can be traded off to increase the margin of safety in the ability to clear blasting areas.

The results of an extensive literature review and field experiments regarding the effects detonation of high energy explosive have upon various aquatic organisms are reported. These results were used to modify regulatory permitting criteria in Texas. Three separate field experiments were conducted. In the first study, surface placed charges were used in a marine habitat. In the other two, the charges were placed in drilled holes. In one, which was in a freshwater environment, the drilled holes were filled with drilling mud after placement of the charges. In the second, which was in an estuarine environment the holes were allowed to sit for thirty days prior to detonation to permit natural back-filling to occur by water transported sediments. A variety of aquatic organisms held in wire cages were exposed to detonations. Immediate and long-term effects of the exposure were determined based on external and internal visual observations. Damage to aquatic organisms was found to be reduced by placing the explosives in drilled holes and back-filling the holes prior to detonation of the explosives.

Rock parameters which are uncontrollable impose restrictions on the procurement of desirable fragmentation. Blast design parameters which are controllable prove to be important tool in blasting operations. An attempt was made by the authors to investigate parameters which causes big oversize boulders in overburden blasting. A case study of coal mine is discussed in this paper.

This paper relates some of the experiences, good and bad, of blasting adjacent to residences of the primary author during his 15+ years of field blasting in the Northern Great Plains region. During this highly-rewarding blasting career, the author has become aware of two major issues in residential blasting: 1) What we call “Risk/Reward Ratio.”Some questions that must be asked by the blaster prior to taking on any blasting job include: - Can we eliminate or minimize the risk? - Is the reward worth the risk? - Do I have a measure of “nervous confidence” about the shot? 2) Public Relations. Two key elements to public relations are: - Notification - Education All the education in the world to the adjacent populous of what’s happening, of blasting in general, or of what to expect from the blasting does little good without notification. Good public relations is a key to controlling the cost of liability in a litigious society.

This research was performed on the quarry that will be opened to produce aggregates and rock filling material at Catalagzi region at Zonguldak providence. Excavations will be done by drilling and blasting. However, there are some structures which can be adversely affected by blasting at the quarry. These structures are a methane exploration drill hole and a house at the distances of 340 m and 390 m, respectively. The one of the main goals of this study is to perform a preliminary assessment of possible damage effect of ground vibrations induced by blasting on these structures by risk analysis based on ground vibration measurements.

After a long week of work in Colorado Springs this past July, I was looking forward to flying home to start a long anticipated family vacation. As I grabbed my seat on the plane, a man sitting next to me innocently inquired, to the row as a whole and not to me in particular, “I wonder what the weather will be like in Phoenix”? To most people, this is a common (maybe the most common) topic of casual conversation. To a meteorologist that just dealt with six thunderstorm delays at a major golf event over 4 days, well, lets just say the smirk on my face said it all. After giving my flight mate a detailed forecast and a short explanation on why I would know such information, I sensed, correctly, the inevitable follow up question was coming. “Why would you need a meteorologist at a golf tournament?”

Seismic studies have proven that the frequency with which shock or vibration waves are reacting on a structure, in correlation with the amplitude of those waves, has a definite affect of structural damage. Different structures will react to different frequencies. In the past few years, some major coal producers in the midwest United States have shown that with the use of highly accurate detonators and exotic timing patterns they have effectively been able to adjust frequencies and this has enabled the operators to continue their excavation of overburden in environmentally sensitive areas.

The Bureau of Mines is studying blast delay timing influences on rock fragmentation in a series of tests that started in 3-ft concrete blocks, progressed to 45in-bench reduced-scale tests in massive dolomite, and has now included 22-ft-bench full-scale tests in a thin-to-thick horizontally bedded dolomite. This paper discusses the full-scale test results and how they compared to the concrete block and reduced-scale studies.

Detonation propagates in the subject blasting agent at about 2.7 km/sec when it is heavily primed but explosion propagates in it at only about 0.43 km/sec when it is lightly primed. When propagating at 0.43 km/sec, it produces a borehole pressure that is slightly less than 1 kb, but no yellow fumes or other sign of incomplete reaction. It is a pumped AN/emulsion blend to which additional water is added by circumferential injection at the inlet of the hose through which it is pumped.

Many technological advancements have been made in explosive products and applications over the last 15 years resulting in productivity and cost gains. However, the applications of total energy (engine horsepower) in the majority of rotary drilling technology, has remained virtually unchanged over that period. While advancements have been made in components, efficiency, and types of hydraulic systems used on drills, the application of current hydraulic technology to improve drilling productivity has not been interactive with end users. This paper will investigate how traditional design assumptions, regarding typical application of horsepower in current rotary drill systems, can actually limit productivity.

A total of 33 blasts in the pillar recovery program at INCO-Crean Hill has been investigated by means of an extensive set of diagnostic techniques. These included, borehole deviation measurements, stope cavity survey, near-field seismics in both rock and backfill, in-hole VOD and fragment size analysis. The 200 mm diameter VCR blasts employed a variety of explosives types (ANFO, slurry and ANFO/Polystyrene) and deck sizes. The objective of the investigation was to control dilution and backbreak through optimal choice of explosive type and charge weight, without exceeding vibration limits in the adjacent backfill or causing significant degradation in fragmentation.

A time series and system analysis modeling technique was applied to signals from strain egages mounted on a fully grouted resin roof bolt and signals from accelerometers mounted on the bolt head and roof rock to determine the roof bolt's response to repeated blast loading. The derived model gives a comprehensive quantitative description of the modes of vibration of the roof bolt response to each blast loading. The damping ratios and natural frequencies of the modes of vibration can reveal the alteration of the process dynamics due to the deterioration of the roof rock and can be used to identify the incipience of instability in the roof bolt system.

Vertical crater retreat mining (VCR) requires initiation methods that minimize debris in the borehole. The use of detonating cord and shock tube detonators eliminates debris that could interfere with subsequent loading operations and avoids the cost of using drilling equipment to clear the debris. The explosive must not be sensitive to the strength of detonating cord used, otherwise timing will be affected. “Slicing and Dicing” of product before “Air mailing” down boreholes may facilitate loading, especially in wet holes, and can result in product surrounding the detonating cord. Cord sensitivity testing confirmed that having the detonating cord surrounded by product significantly increases the likelihood of an energetic reaction. Careful formulation and testing, based on a thorough knowledge of the application and the role of ingredients in affecting performance, ensures reliable initiation and avoids cord sensitivity. The use of certain metallic nitrate salts, even in relatively small amounts, was found to significantly increase the cord sensitivity of watergel formulations. Evidence of increasing cord sensitivity includes increasing amounts of damage to product and packaging, to ejection of product from the test pipe, then cracking of the pipe, followed by deflagration then detonation of the product. Predictably, the likelihood of an energetic reaction increases with product temperature, cord strength, and borehole diameter, while it is inversely related to product density.

Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

This paper consists of the conduct of a forensic criminal investigation of the components, construction, use, and functioning of two suicide bombs. As the title states, the task was to form professional opinions as to whether the bombs would work, would cause property damage, and would injure or kill. The bombs were created and installed by a defendant in a Federal death penalty case where the defendant’s daughter was killed in a shootout with the West Virginia State Police. The two black powder bombs were placed under the front seats of the defendant’s automobile and were designed to function by the use of a toggle switch connected to the automobile’s cigarette lighter. The forensic work first consisted of an inspection of the remains of the wiring system and bombs at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Laboratory, in Ammendale, MD. This was necessary to determine and detail the wire diameter and lengths, the lengths and size of the wire used, the type of toggle switch used, the type of containers, the type of rocket motors used to initiate the black powder, the manufacturer and amount of black powder used in each bomb, and the type, wraps, and amount of duct tape used for the construction of each bomb. Using this data, tests were conducted by duplicating the wiring system and the two bombs to insure that the system functioned properly. Each bomb was duplicated and initiated to observe the violence produced when initiated in the open air. Duplicate bombs were placed under the seats of a similar type of automobile and initiated. The purposes of the tests were to duplicate the bombs, to observe the violence of the initiation, and to observe the damages to the automobile produced by the initiation.

To improve control of blasting, tests were performed to assess non-electric cap accuracy. Simultaneous testing using a Velocity of Detonation Recorder (VODR), Red Lake LoCam and an Instantel DS-677 blast monitor was done. Favorable comparisons were found in the three records. This testing confirmed the accuracy of an inexpensive and expedient cap testing procedure.
