Toxic fume concentrations from industrial mining explosives depend somewhat upon the type of rock (or other strata) confinement. Though traditional detonation theory disregards this influence, the work principal from thermodynamics reveals it, when the violent interactions that transpire within the rock blast are taken into proper account. Resolution of the work principle technique requires total thermodynamic equilibrium under constraint, so the nonequilibrium dynamics is rendered in that way, using an old trick from theoretical mechanics that revises the representation of forces. The rock pressure reduces to a four-component sum: the rock compressive strength and natural atmospheric pressure, as reckoned quasi-statically, and the gravitational influence and reversed inertial resistance, as reckoned dynamically. Tabulated specie concentrations and graphical trends reveal the dependency upon rock pressure, rock temperature and the fuel-oil percentage in ammonium nitrate mixtures (ANFO), used to illustrate the model. Rigid-wall test chambers have notable ullage (residual space), where rapid expansion influences the reaction quenching, yielding a fume spectrum unlike that for rock confinement; reported rock tests are therefore used for comparisons. For the thermodynamic regime where quenching occurs, seven concentrations are resolved, including carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOX). Their trends yield inferences regarding the way unwanted charge desensitization from transitory hole-to-hole wave impact in conjunction with reduced rock pressure can yield nasty toxic fumes, the dark rusty cloud phenomenon!

ANFO is the most used industrial blasting agent in the world, and is often used as a reference for comparison of other explosives. It is known to work very well under dry conditions in large borehole diameters, whilst in small borehole diameters increasing amounts of toxic fumes (CO, NO and NOz) can be formed. In underground blasting, problems can also occur with reduced visibility caused by unreacted ammonium nitrate and overall composition of the detonation fumes. ANFO is made by mixing Ammonium Nitrate Porous Prills (AN-PP) and fuel oil. We have measured velocity of detonation (VOD), toxic fumes and visibility after blasting of ANFO in 54x2 mm steel tubes, and the differences are remarkable: By using an AN-PP grade developed for underground blasting and small diameters, the following can be obtained:

High-speed photography has proven to be an extremely valuable tool for the evaluation of blasting practices in the Warrior Coal Basin. A research project, coordinated by Nelson Brothers Inc. and The University of Alabama's Mineral Engineering Department, has centered on the use of high-speed photography to study and analyze blast performance. A large number of production shots in this region has been filmed and studied. The data obtained from the films have been used to establish graphical relationships between certain blast parameters and overall shot performance. These relationships will be used to develop a computer model that will estimate cast results from a given burden explosive energy combination. This paper describes the methods and procedures used to develop these relationships. The results of the research are discussed along with plans for continuing the research project.

The emulsion explosives show non- ideal detonation behavior, and its detonation velocity can be controled by selecting the size and adjusting the quantity of voids involved. To establish the technology to control the detonation characteristics of the emulsion explosives, some experiments have been carried out using resin balloons of five different sizes ranged from O.OSmm to 2.42mm in the average diameter. Detonation velocities of the emulsion explosives containing resin balloons of different size and quantity were determined for the charge diameter of 20-50mm. The detonation velocity at infinite charge diameter was compared with calculated ideal detonation velocity. The emulsion explosives containing large (0.5mm or larger) balloons showed big discrepancy between the measured and calculated detonation velocities, and the fraction of ammonium nitrate reacted in the reaction zone was estimated to be significantly low. It was shown that the reaction zone length was proportional to the size of voids involved. The critical charge diameter was determined for the emulsion explosives containing different resin balloons at the various explosive densities. It is large for the emulsion explosives containing large voids, and it was shown that the critical diameter is proportional to the distance between the void surfaces, not to the void spacing, the distance between the centers of the voids. The reaction rate of the bulk emulsion matrix seems to be the major factor that affects the critical diameter than the specific surface of voids. Good relationship between the critical diameter and the reaction zone length was observed.

"A Natural Resources Working Group, within the International Society of Explosives Engineers, reviewed published environmental effects data, identified data gaps, and prioritized data collection needs relative to underwater explosive use. Six groups of organisms were reviewed: 1) aquatic plants, 2) aquatic invertebrates, 3) fish, 4) amphibians, 5) reptiles, and 6) marine mammals. Studyrecommendations included: conducting basic research to determine the relationship between pressure waveform and mortality where little or no data exist (e.g., aquatic plants, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and marine mammals) and conducting narrowly defined studies where adequate data have been acquired (e.g., aquatic invertebrates). The goals of the recommended studies are to develop the relationship between pressure waveform and mortality/damage in order to construct mortality models. Development of comprehensive mortality models would be extremely useful to the blasting community for assessing environmental impacts and developing strategies for reducing impacts from explosives used underwater."

Based on the rock blasting engineering, The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) network has been implemented for the concept and method of rock blastability classification. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a neural network algorithm which is especially suitable for the analysis and visualization of high-dimensional data. It maps nonlinear statistical relationships between high-dimensional input data into simple geometric relationships, usually on a two-dimensional grid. The mapping roughly preserves the most important topological and metric relationships of the original data elements and, thus, inherently clusters the data. SOM allows easy data fusion enabling visualization and analysis of large databases of rock blasting engineering. As a case study, the classification technique based on SOM has been used to classify the rock mass blastability rank. It can be founded from this paper that the SOM networks can be developed well based on a comprehensive data set of rock blasting engineering.

"The EC-project ""Blasting Control"" with partners from France, Austria, Italy and Greece dealt with the development of a diagnosis system, which enables blasting experts to investigate in detail on probable reasons of poor blasting results in underground drifting. The system incorporates monitoring of geometric, explosive, vibration and granulometry data. All data are compiled in a database and are provided for direct retrievement by demand of the experts in a graphical environment. This paper focuses on the advantages of such graphical system for both research tasks and applications in real testing situations. It describes the procedure of monitoring and presents a selection of graphical outputs generated during data processing immediately after blasting. Benefits of detailed monitoring in respect of detecting sources of errors are explicated by a actual example of a test series in a mine. The paper will conclude with an outlook onto the scientificresearch work which is planned to be based on the results of hitherto investigations."

The Industrialization of a country depends on its mining activities to a great extent. In mineral production, India has a top rank not only in South Asia, at the global level too. Due to rapid growth of mining activities in the country, the explosives industry has been developing very fast in terms of quantity, quality and types. , In this paper, India’s post independent chronological date regarding use of explosives, their types, their constraints and a profile of well-known manufacturers has been meticulously presented. A production figure for three years with system analysis has been presented. The paper also deals with present consumption pattern while making a futuristic forecast. In view of the anticipated changes that are to take place in mining industries in near future, the manufacturers of explosives have to pay a vital role. The paper highlights some concrete and valuable suggestions and recommendations. Small scale Companies have to limit their production to Slurry and Emulsion types of Cartridged explosives whereas the large manufacturing units have to concentrate on Bulk explosives, specialized explosives and better initiating systems. The large manufacturing units have also to make all concerted efforts to compete with global market for significant export. The Country for its rapid growth needs basic raw materials like Coal, Iron Ore and Limestone. So, the extraction of these minerals is of prime importance. The more we produce and consume, the more will be Industrialization. The Industrial growth rate has been around 6% during the last few years. As the Industrial growth rate is moderate, there is moderate increase in mineral extraction in the Country. Additional mineral extraction demands additional explosive production (Annexure-1).

Vibrations are of concern not only for the safety of surface structures but also for the stability of underground openings. A number of parameters affect the intensity of vibration in underground openings due to blasting in adjacent opencast mine viz. total explosive weight detonated in a round, maximum explosive weight per delay, propagating media, depth of cover, RMR of the roof rock, age of the underground openings etc. Although a few researchers have tried to study the impact of parameters stated above, the impact of initiation sequences on generation of vibration in underground openings due to opencast blasting has yet remained untouched. A study was planned to evaluate the impact of initiation sequences on the magnitude of vibration in underground openings due to blasting in opencast mine. Nine production blasts with top and bottom initiations were performed at Samleshwari opencast project in India and eighteen vibration data were monitored in the roof of Hingir Rampur underground colliery in both the initiation sequences. The result indicated that the vibration produced in the underground openings from bottom initiation was lower than that of top initiation.

Vibrations from Dade County (Miami area) quarry blasting and structure responses were measured at 11 locations between February and April, 2000, and 10 homes were inspected to analyze the characteristics of their cracking and other damages. These results were combined with information collected by the County and other studies done in south Florida for a blasting impact assessment specific to this area. In addition over 40 quarry blasts in the nine-week monitoring period, about 800 measurements were available from previous monitoring in Dade and neighboring Broward counties. An overall worst-case analyses based on the highest individual amplitudes suggested that vibrations in some areas could have been as high as 0.35 in/s. While amplitudes in the study period were below this value, they were found to be relatively high for the distances and charge sizes. Attenuation with distance is less in Dade County than found elsewhere with quarries having to use scaled distances several times higher than similar sites in the north. Consequently, the vibrations are perceptible at very large distances.
