The mining industry occasionally blasts near pressurized transmission pipelines and has requested guidance on safe vibration levels and setback distances. The Bureau of Mines and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources cooperated with AMAX Coal Company on a study of coal mine overburden blasting. Five buried and pressurized 250-ft pipeline sections were specifically installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN for testing to failure. Four welded steel pipes ranging from 6- to 20-in diameter and one 8-in PVC water supply pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and internal pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale blasting representing construction activities, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 2100 lb per delay in 12-1/4-in diameter holes.

Well # 18-1063 at 515 meters below ground is loaded with 802 units of explosives with total weight of 1820 kilos to fill up the column of 93 meters of limestone & sulphur strata.

As part of a series of seismic experiments designed to improve the understanding of the impact of mining blasts on verifying a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, a sixteen station network of three-component seismic sensors were deployed around a large cast shot in the Black Thunder Mine. The seismic stations were placed, where possible, at a range of 2.5 kilometers with a constant inter-station spacing of 22.5 degrees. All of the data were recorded with the seismometers oriented such that the radial component pointed to the middle point of the approximately 2 kilometer long shot. High quality data were recorded at each station. Data were scaled to a range of 2.5 kilometers and the sum of the absolute value of the vertical, radial, and transverse channels computed. These observations were used to construct radiation patterns of the seismic energy propagating from the cast shot. It is obvious that cast shots do not radiate seismic energy isotropically. Most of the vertical motion occurs behind the highwall while radial and transverse components of motion are enhanced in directions parallel to the highwall.

A discrete element computer program named DMC_BLAST (Distinct Motion Code) has been under development since 1987 for modeling rock blasting (Preece & Taylor, 1989). This program employs explicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements that are represented as circles in two dimensions (2-D). DMC_BLAST calculations compare favorably with data from actual bench blasts (Preece et al, 1993).

Blast casting or trajectory blasting, as it is sometimes called, is an innovative mining technique that has been receiving increasing acceptance among operations of surface coal mines and quarries as a means of offsetting the rising cost of mechanical excavation of overburden with a high overburden-to-ore ratio. Many similarities exist between geological characteristics of overburden formations of phosphate beds and the formations that conceal coal seams. Both are sedimentary origin and are removed for mining in an identical manner (i.e. use of a dragline or shovel to strip or cast the overburden aside).

High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in rock. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m (3 to 7ft) and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m (0.8 to 1.6ft) along mine walls. The resulting tomograms of P-wave velocity show low velocity zones which we interpret as residual fracturing from blasting. Experiments on a concrete test block and at two underground mine locations give results that are consistent with fractured rock transitioning to competent rock.

This paper reports a simple approach to model the waveform change due to travel distances based on the field measurement. A linear interpolation is used to estimate the waveform at a distance from two vibration waveforms recorded at two different distances. The resulted waveforms are compared with actual recorded waveforms at the point in both time and frequency domains. It shows that the proposed method to estimate the waveform change yield reliable results. The advantages of the proposed method are that it does not require assumptions that a transfer function does and that it is based on purely the measured waveforms that are encoded with in-situ rock properties. The method could be more reliable for far field seismic waveforms and could be an approximation for near field waveform estimation.

This research program was undertaken to better understand the factors causing abnormal NOx fumes generation from blasting operations in surface coal mining. More specifically, unusual quantities of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide have been observed at several surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming. All these mining operations have several points in common: (i) Blasting is performed using gravity loaded emulsions or emulsion/ANFO blends (ii) Unusual NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) emissions are observed mostly when blasting is conducted in the overburden as opposed to the coal seam itself (iii) The overburden consists of very weakly consolidated ground strata, providing relatively weak confinement conditions for the explosives, and (iv) Significant ground water is observed.

Based on the analysis of factors affecting the cracking performance of Silently Cracking Agent (SCA), a new SCA structural model is built and a study on the swelling mechanism of SCA and a method to increase swelling thrust by adding the swelling agent are presented. The reason for blow-out and the theory for avoiding blow-out are put forward. The new model improves the SCA theory and provides new method for developing effective SCA. Based on experiments made in laboratory, two types of SCA are developed. A Temperature Control Meter (TCM) has been developed to solve the alltemperature- crack problem after studying the suitable temperature scope of SCA.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada [IOC] is a global leader in Arctic mining applications, and the blasting crew have something to be very proud of. On Wednesday 21 Dec 2005 at 3:28 PM the largest single bench blast in the company history was detonated. The successful firing of this 5.0 million tonne [5.5 million ton] blast surpassed the previous company record of 3.8 million tonnes [4.18 million ton].

The quiet banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, received a wake-up call July 16 as two smokestacks in the Marina District were leveled with dynamite. B&B Wrecking, Inc. of Cleveland contracted the project with the city to bring down the twin stacks, both measuring over 250 feet tall. The structures were part of the Toledo Edison Steam Plant and were erected nearly a hundred years ago. A week’s worth of preparation went into final planning, drilling and loading holes with over 80 pounds of explosives. The felling went precisely as planned as onlookers cheered as the stacks were reduced to rubble.

To meet salt production needs over the remaining life of the Cayuga Mine at Lansing, New York, the Salt Division of Cargill, Inc. decided to build a new underground screening plant. The new plant required a chamber 50 feet wide by 250 feet long and nearly 70 feet high. On advise of their mining contractor, Dynatec Mining Company, the company chose an ingenious excavation method similar to sublevel stoping. This method eliminated the need for an access ramp, reduced equipment needs and excavation time substantially.

A series of experiments have been performed to characterize fragmentation and microcracking in quartz monzonite copper porphyry. The flyer plate impact method was used to generate plane shock waves in rock specimens for impact pressures between 1.6 and 7.3 GPa and impact pulse durations between 1.1 and 7.0 µs. The effects of pressures up to 4.8 GPa and pulse duration on fragment size distributions and microcrack densities were studied. The results show that pressures effect particle sizes to a greater extent at higher pulse durations. However, changes in pressure and pulse duration show little influence on the density of microcracks induced during explosive loading. These results indicate that the nucleation and growth of microcracks in rock subjected to shock waves occur uniformly throughout. A substantial decrease in particle sizes for high pulse durations is attributed to more time allowed for microcracks to grow and coalesce, forming individual particles.

This paper describes a new digital Centralized Blasting System (CBS), which is currently being introduced into underground applications. The CBS makes use of the field-proven detonator and equipment technology of an electronic detonator system and existing mine radio communication networks. Therefore no capital investment for additional mine infrastructure networks is required for the deployment of the digital CBS. Components of the new system are a Remote Blasting Box for use at the actual blast site and a Master control unit ‘Lockbox’ which is located at the central blasting location of the mine. The system is operated via a PC based centralized blasting software. Several sophisticated safety devices guarantee the highest safety standards are maintained with the application of the new digital CBS.

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Hisarcik Boron open pit mine located on the west side of the central Anatolia near Kütahya province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study in order to predict peak particle velocity level for this site, ground vibration components were measured for 304 shots during bench blasting. In blasting operations; ANFO (blasting agent), gelatin dynamite (priming) and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using 2 different types vibration monitors (1 White Mini-Seis and 1 Instantel Minimate Plus Models). The absolute distances between shot points and monitor stations were determined using GPS. The equation of square root scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity.

Helwan limestone quarry is located at a distance of 35 km (21.7 miles) to the south of Cairo downtown. Drilling and blasting operations are used to extract the limestone for the Helwan Cement Company (HCC). In 1980’s a new urban community was constructed adjacent to the quarry. This situation led to shifting of the old quarry 5.0 km (3.1 miles) to its current location, to avoid causing blasting problems to the new community. Unfortunately, the new quarry is opened in a highly faulted area, with weak zones of brittle materials. The drilling and blasting crew is facing many difficulties due to the geological complexity along these zones. Moreover, the extension of this community towards the new quarry makes the control of ground vibrations is very important.

The paper discusses procedures used in estimating pre-bid cost; in particular, drilling and blasting cost for highways, dams and general construction projects. It breaks cost down into five categories and relates them to a total estimate used in bidding and budgeting a construction project.
