Westmin Resources Limited's H-W orebody on Vancouver Island is a copper/lead/zinc massive sulphide deposit that has been in production since 1985. The sulphur content of the ore averages 28% and in some stopes is as high as 53%. Several minor secondary sulphide dust explosions have occurred in development headings and cut and fill stopes, but as yet no known explosions have occurred in blasthole stopes. This pa:per reviews the history of sulphide dust explosions in the H-W Mine, factors contributing to the explosions and the preventative measures taken to control them.

"The wet grinding of asbestos has attracted the attention of engineers for many years as a means of improving fibre liberation from the ore. Today, added impetus for wet grinding has resulted from a need to minimize worker exposure to asbestos dust in conventional dry mills using air, as well as a need to provide a cleaner, technically superior fibre for use by product manufacturers. However , high viscosities of asbestos slurries create transport and grinding difficulties which have been a factor impeding use of a wet grinding process.Laboratory evaluation of reagents to reduce viscosities of asbestos slurries found that one reagent, XFS-4272.00, reduced the viscosity of a 35% (by weight) slurry by 75%. The impact of XFS-4272.00 on actual grinding parameters were evaluated using a pilot plant rod mill. Slurries containing 78% solids and XFS-4272.00 were successfully milled and asbestos fibres from that milling compared favourably in liberation and relative surface area to asbestos fibres obtained from milling a 4% slurry without additives.IntroductionAlthough the use of asbestos has been declining over the last few years, the large deposits of chrysotile in eastern Canada (Quebec in particular) remain very important. Asbestos production in Canada stands ninth in volume for mineral production with over 740 000 tonnes produced in 1985. Of this quantity, 722000 tonnes were exported with a value of $446 million . Canada is second in world production of asbestos behind the U.S.S.R ."

The flocculant-assisted hydrocyclone involves the addition of a flocculant to the cyclone feed for the purpose of obtaining a clear cyclone overflow, and thereby eliminating or reducing thickener requirements in tailings disposal operations. This paper describes the testing of this concept on the iron ore tailings of Quebec Cartier Mining Company's Mount Wright Concentrator. The current practice at Mount Wright makes use of conventional hydrocyclones and thickeners for the disposal of their tailings, which are generated in a spiral gravity separation circuit. The test work was conducted primarily on their cyclone overflow product which becomes the feed to the thickeners. A detailed study was carried out to determine the sedimentation properties of these tailings in terms of their response to a variety of flocculating reagents, and to varying conditions of pH, pulp density and flocculant dosage. The tailings were then processed in a laboratory hydrocyclone with the aid of flocculants. The use of a shear resistant flocculant, in particular, was found to yield cyclone overflows with low solids contents. Based on the test results obtained, a conceptual flow sheet has been proposed for the treatment of the iron ore tailings at the Mount Wright Concentrator.

The copper smelting industry has transitioned into the 21st century compliant with environmental regulations, new smelter installations and brown field expansions. The industry faces new challenges as copper in concentrate grades have decreased while contained impurities have increased. A new benchmarking survey was undertaken to update the last survey of 2016 for operating copper smelters in the world. The information collected was separated based on primary smelting technology rather than by geographical location and supplemented from published literature. Each smelting technology’s unique use of specialized process equipment, concentrate smelting capacity, and impurity flexibility are discussed INTRODUCTION The 20th century was a remarkable time for the growth of copper smelting. Electric, blast and reverberator furnaces dominated the smelting technology well past WWII. In the 1970s, SO2 regulations and high energy cost drove the development of new primary smelting technology. Technological advancements decreased energy consumption and enriched sulfur dioxide concentrations of the process off-gas to levels where sulfur capture in sulfuric acid plants was economically viable. The new smelting technologies began to replace reverberatory and electric furnaces starting in the late 1940s. A new paradigm in copper smelting was established and the enabler was then Outkumpu’s® flash smelting technology from the 1940s through to today. Now, Outotec had become the dominant primary smelting technology with over 44 copper flash smelting furnace installations world-wide. Figure 1 shows the historical installation statistics of primary smelting technologies over the last 70 years (ICSG 2018). The dominance and acceptance of the Outotec® smelting technology from the 1940s to current can be seen. Isasmelt® technology for copper was introduced in the 1970s and did not see advancement in new installations until the 1990s through today. Isasmelt® has 12 world-wide copper furnace installations to date. Mitsubishi® also introduced continuous smelting and converting technology in the 1970s, but had no new installations until the 1990s with a total of 5 copper smelters. Outotec Ausmelt® smelting technology had 3 installations in the 1990s and totals 10 furnaces. Most recently the Chinese technology of Bottom Blown and Submerged Lance Smelting began commercial operations in 2005 for total installations of 11, mostly in China. Other technologies, such as, El Teniente, Noranda, Inco, and Vanyukov furnaces have contributed to the overall global smelting capacity, but have not penetrated the smelting industry to challenge the existing dominant smelting technologies. The technology distribution in Figure 1 also shows flash smelting technology for sulfide concentrate domination untill 2000, bottom blow technology has become the preference in China. Currently, China is the only country building new smelting capacity. Isasmelt® technology also seen a large increase in installations in the current decade.

It has long been recognized that there are considerable difficulties connected with the physical and chemical explanation of shoots of ore. The literature of Mining Geology has frequent references to this subject; but the reasons given for the actual location of primary ore-shoots have been very tentative. In practice, the geologist or miner depends to a great extent on sampling and assaying to determine the boundaries of profitable ore within the mineralized zone. An ore-shoot is a portion of a mineralized zone which has a sufficient concentration of valuable minerals to make it ore. Ore deposits have been classified according to many schemes. There are classifications based on morphology and on genesis. However, it is also possible to classify hypo-gene hydrothermal ore-bodies in terms of ore-shoots or vice versa. A.-Ore-deposits in which the whole of the mineralized zone is ore, which is the same as saying that the ore-shoot extends throughout the mineralized zone. An example of this type of deposit would be the pyritic mineralization of Rio Tinto. B.-The second type would comprise those deposits in which the ore-shoots bear some relation to the geological structure of the area: all deposits in which 'bonanzas' occur in folds in the zone, at the intersection of veins along certain fault (or joint) features and other such controls. There are a great many examples of this type: (a) The Rhodesian copper lodes, where Bancroft and Gray have pointed out the association of the shoots of ore with drag folds. (b) A similar association has been pointed out by Faribault for some of the gold veins of Nova Scotia, e.g., Mount Uniacke. (c) The great bonanza of the Comstock lode in Nevada. C.-Deposits in which the localization of ore has been effected by the chemical character of the wall-rock. Examples of this type are the Fahlbands of Scandinavia, and the 'indicator' deposits of Ballarat, Australia. D.-Lastly, deposits in which there is apparently no structural and no chemical control.

Le Camp Minier de Matagami est situé dans la ceinture volcano-sédimentaire Harricana- Turgeon appartenant à la Province du Supérieur, sous-province de l?Abitibi, au Québec. Les gisements de métaux de base polymétalliques sont retrouvés exclusivement dans les deux domaines lithotectoniques comprenant l?association basalte-rhyolite (Matagami-Brouillan et Joutel-Raymond). Tous ces dépôts, à l?exception de ceux de Selbaie, sont de type exhalatif et représentent des dépôts volcanogènes à Zn-Cu, typiques de l?Archéen. Le complexe volcanique de Matagami est constitué principalement de deux phases de volcanisme tholéïtique. Les dacites et les rhyolites du Groupe de Watson, représentent la phase la plus précoce et celles-cis sont recouvertes par la seconde phase qui est constituée majoritairement de roches intermédiares à mafiques intercalées d?horizons felsiques, formant le Groupe de Wabassee. Un sédiment chimique sulfuré, la Tuffite Clef, marque le contact et l?hiatus entre ces deux groupes. Cette tuffite est reconnue à la grandeur du flanc sud du camp minier et représente l?horizon favorable à explorer puisque sa déposition a correwspond à une période d?intense activité hydrothermale. Le complexe volcanique de Matagami est limité au nord et au sud par des bandes sédimentaires orientées est-ouest, connues respectivement sous les noms de Groupe de Matagami et Groupe de Taïbi. Le Complexe intrusif de la Rivière Bell, qui occupe la base du Groupe de Watson, est un complexe lité consistant en une séquence stratifiée gabbroïque avec localement des niveaux stratiformes à concentrations d?oxydes magmatiques, la bordure de ce complexe est marquée par la présence d?un horizon granophyrique. Cette intrusion synvolcanique prétectonique, représente probablement la source de chaleur étant à l?origine de l?activité hydrothermale observée dans les roches volcaniques sus-jacentes. Suite à un levé aéroporté, le camp minier de Matagami a vu le jour en 1956 lors de la découverte du dépôt de Mattagami Lake, un gisement volcanogène de 25.6 millions de tonnes. Depuis ce temps, un total de neuf gisements ont été exploités et un dixième, Bell Allard, est présentement en production. En date du 31 décembre 1999, la production historique du camp s?élevait à plus de 41 millions de tonnes. Cette présentation mettra l?accent sur la géologie des récentes découvertes dans le prolifique camp minier de Matagami. Les ressources publiées pour le dépôt Persévérance sont de 947,000 tonnes titrant 19.12% Zn, 1.37% Cu, 32 g/t Ag et 0.40 g/t Au. Deux autres découvertes, Équinoxe et Persévérance Ouest contibueront à la ressource globale. Les trois dépôts sont situés au niveau de la Tuffite Clef même si les roches sus-jacentes ne sont pas celles typiquement observées dans les autres dépôts du flanc sud. Ces découvertes sont le résultat d?un programme d?exploration ciblé et soutenu, démontrant ainsi la possibilité de découvrir de nouvelles ressources même dans les camps miniers comme Matagami qui ont été explorés intensivement depuis plus d?un demi-siècle.

"Uranium, thorium and yttrium have been recovered, since the 1950s, from pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates occurring in the basal sediments of the Quirke syncline at Elliot Lake. Gold, an element of interest in similar type deposits occurring worldwide, is a very minor constituent of the Elliot Lake conglomerates because the provenance area of the sediments had few gold-bearing rocks.Uranium, thorium and rare elements are found in resistate and diagenetic minerals occurring in the matrix of the conglomerates. The valuable elements are recovered from the acid soluble minerals during the milling process.Large uranium reserves occur in mines found on both limbs of the Quirke syncline. Major reserves are being developed on the South Limb of the syncline, where the Stanleigh Mine, among four past-producers, has been reactivated.IntroductionUranium and thorium commonly occur in anomalous amounts in coarse basal sediments. Radioactivity in basal conglomeratic sediments is generally attributable to resistate minerals, that rarely occur in concentrations high enough to be of economic significance. One type of basal conglomerate found worldwide, in Precambrian cratonic basins, has uranium or uranium and gold concentrations large enough to be of economic interest. Principal among the occurrences are the pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates of the Huronian in Canada, of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and at Jacobina in Brazil.The uranium and gold mineralization of these conglomerates was derived from provenance areas where both elements occurred and were later concentrated through source degradation and deposition in placers in a reducing environment. Only the Huronian conglomerates, generally much richer in uranium but with negligible gold, have been exploited solely for their uranium content.The uraniferous conglomerates of the Huronian at Elliot Lake, 500 km north of Toronto, continue to represent a major world source and supply of uranium concentrate."

"This paper focusses on what seem to be the leading indicators of prosperity in the minerals industry during this decade: the geographical distribution of deposits, environmental impact, capital allocation and acid consumption. There is a potential for meeting environmental criteria at a reasonable profit margin, but those with limited acid demand within economic range will face hard times to meet growing environmental concerns, resulting in additional mine closures. At the other end, those with old waste dumps who are thinking about smelting capacity additions will need capital influx at a much larger rate than ever before. All things considered, a change should be made in the way the world's copper reserves are computed, because there is a growing need to internalize these effects back to the ore blocks before a meaningful estimate of reserves becomes available.IntroductionThe copper industry has undergone several changes during the past decade, many of which were expected to take place because they rel1ect the economics of ageing mines. However, many others took place that shocked the industry because they were not completely under control. The focus of this paper is to rel1ect on those changes, and on market expectations for this decade that somehow depend on their impact.To review the prospects for new mine developments and expansions from an industry perspective to a full extent, it would be necessary to consider not only the deposits themselves, but also geographical constraints, environmental constraints, labour composition, technology development and use, the availability of capital, ownership issues, and integration within the industry. "To remove sulphur, carbon and arsenic from the gold concentrates of Dundee Sustainable Technologies (DST), Hatch has designed a demonstration plant roaster using the fluid bed technology. The fluid bed was selected for its ability to maintain stable temperatures and uniform reaction conditions. Data points from a small pilot plant (operated by DST) were used for setting the parameters of the demo plant roaster.The DST demonstration plant is being built to further prove their patented gold extraction process at an industrial scale. Their gold extraction process is based on halogenation at atmospheric pressure and relatively low temperatures. Before the halogen leaching, most of the sulphur, carbon and arsenic should be roasted out of the feed concentrate.The Hatch fluid bed roaster design includes a moist feed introduction system, simple bed cooling for temperature control, and cyclone fines recirculation. The demonstration plant roaster is planned for construction in 2014, and the performance results will be presented in a future paper."

"Pulang Copper Mine is located in Shangri-La county, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, with currently defined copper reserve of 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal and an average grade of 0.34% Cu. The mineralized zone in a dome shape is 2,300 m long, 600–800 m wide, and 1,000 m high. At present, the project is at a construction phase, with a first-stage mining and processing capacity of 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. Ore haulage is planned via a drift and ore pass development system. The cavability of mineralized rock is classified into three types (II, III, IV), with type III accounting for more than 98% of the total reserves. The cavability of the orebody is generally considered to be good and block caving mining method is planned. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are adopted for the mineral processing. The tailing dam construction method is a center-line method.INTRODUCTIONAs the China's largest underground nonferrous mine, Pulang Copper Mine is located in the northeast of Shangri-La County, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. It is 62 km northeast of Shangri-La city. Shangri-La County is a Tibetan-dominated, multiple-ethnic region, with a population of approximately 163,000 in 2009. The county is rich in mineral and water resources, thriving with tourism. Its economy is also dominated by agriculture. To date, the defined copper reserves at the Pulang Copper Mine is 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal at an average grade of 0.34% Cu. In addition, it contains a gold reserve of 145 tonnes, a silver reserve of 2,754 tonnes, a molybdenum reserve of 0.19 million tonnes, and a sulphur reserve of 10.5 million tonnes. The first-stage mining and processing capacity is planned at 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. When it ramps up to this production rate, the mine will produce copper concentrate containing 50,000 tonnes of copper and molybdenum concentrate containing 968 tonnes of molybdenum. A drift and ore pass system is planned for ore haulage and mining method is a block caving method. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are considered for mineral processing. A center line dam is adopted for the tailing dam construction (Feng, 2010; Feng, Li, & Wang, 2011; China Enfi Engineering Corporation, 2014)."

The Transportable Moisture Limit (TML) is the copper concentrate moisture content beyond which liquefaction may occur during shipping. This study indicates that TML is a function of mineralogical characteristics of concentrate, which in turn may directly affect moisture retention properties. A comprehensive mineralogical and chemical analysis was conducted to determine the impact of composition and mineral content on concentrate’s TML. The analysis indicates that the high TML value is associated with particular minerals such as gypsum, swelling clay, muscovite and pyrite. Since higher TML values allow higher moisture contents for shipping, this property is desirable for concentrate inventory management and shipping flexibility. Scarcity of minerals that may increase TML contributes to limitations of shippable inventory. INTRODUCTION TML is the maximum moisture content of copper concentrate beyond which liquefaction may occur. Moisture content above the TML is considered a shipping hazard as it may result in loss of lives and cargo. The details of TML testing are given in ISO 12742:2007 (ISO 12742). In principle, TML is 90% of the Flow Moisture Point. The method of testing for Flow Moisture Point and TML is based on procedures that provide pulsations that simulate the cyclic force of ocean waves to determine moisture levels at which the onset of concentrate flow may occur. International Maritime Organization (IMO) provides guidelines for developing and approving TML testing and moisture determination in the context of its Moisture Management Plan (MMP) for shipment of copper concentrate cargoes (IMO 2013). The IMO regulations are specifically provided in MSC.1/Circ. 1454 “Guidelines for developing and approving procedures for sampling, testing and controlling the moisture content for solid bulk cargoes which may liquefy”. Since each port has its own operational characteristics, resource availability, peculiarities of governmental structure, and desired methods of interaction with the authorities, it is necessary to adopt the IMO guidelines to the local requirements. In order to establish a TML and MMP measurement system, it is required to implement and follow proper guidelines for the relevant procedures. For example, sampling procedures are developed in accordance of ISO 12743, “Copper, lead, zinc, and nickel concentrates – Sampling procedures for determination of metal and moisture content”. Moisture content of copper concentrate samples are determined in accordance with ISO 10251, “Copper, lead, zinc, and nickel concentrates – Determination of mass loss of bulk material on drying”. To assure strict adherence to the MMP procedures, the overall system needs to be integrated into the site QA/QC system, which would make them auditable and certified in accordance with standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 17025, and ISO 17020.

The effectiveness of two types of powder used in long-wall slashing was compared. The evaluation of the results can serve as a good example of how the application of statistical methods to underground test data can help to minimize the number of tests to be carried out. The conclusions are stated concisely, including a definite assessment of the reliability of the tests. Introduction AN assignment at the Algom Nordic mine called for a performance comparison between 70 per cent Cilgel B and 75 per cent Dygel in longwall stope slashing, particularly taking into account, in both cases, the build-up of bootlegs as dependent on hole deviation. Stopes were usually 8 to 10 ft. high and inclined at about 17 degrees. Starting from a raise, they were widened by consecutive longwall slashes to 60 ft., and, al-lowing for drift pillars, were approximately 300 ft. in length along the incline.

Flotation is a separation process based on the collection of particles on the surface of bubbles. Flotation machines disperse air into bubbles using a variety of techniques. The characteristics of the bubble population are strongly affected by the selection of frother type and concentration. As metallurgical results depend on the bubble distribution, the measurement of frother concentration is vital to understand and control performance. A previously developed colorimetric technique was refined to work with low solubility frothers and to increase daily analysis rate. Field-testing demonstrated that the method is robust, reliable and accurate. As well as relating frother concentration to gas dispersion measurements, the results can be used to answer operational questions including: how well a frother dissolves, how reliable and stable frother delivery is, how evenly frother is distributed down a bank, and whether frother distributes between the pulp and froth zones. Some of these points are illustrated from plant experiences. Cold drawing of copper wire rod is usually combined with an in-line annealing process to adjust the ductile microstructure of the wire again. One important key factor for successful annealing is the quality of the copper itself. Rod producers can check the recrystallization behaviour of the rod by different methods: chemical analysis, Spiral Elongation Test (SEN) as well as the Rapid Elongation Test (AR) are some examples of common testing methods. The comparison of the results of these methods does not always show sufficient correlations. The paper introduces firstly the SEN and AR-Tests and their different approaches to the mentioned task. The second step is to compare some results of the SEN-Test with the results of the AR-Test and identify causes of deviations. Thirdly, the effect of pre-annealing is discussed, which is especially common for wire rod with diameters of more than 8 mm.

"Geopolymers are inorganic semi-amorphous three dimensional silico-aluminates of the poly(sialate) type (-Si-O-Al-0-) or of the poly(sialate-siloxo) type (-Si-O-Al-O-Si-0-). Polycondensation occurs at low temperatures with geopolymers being stable up to 12oo0 c. Research, development and application technology pertaining to geopolymers is being undertaken jointly with Dr. Joseph Davidovits of The Institute for Applied Archaeological Sciences of Florida, U.S.A. This joint focused upon the chemical Barry University in Miami Shores, research and development program has stabilization and solidification of various waste products through geopolymerization. Of particular interest is the geopolymerization of mine wastes including tailings and waste rock derived from the processing of base metals, precious metals, potash, coal and uranium deposits.INTRODUCTIOND. Comrie Consulting Ltd., in cooperation and technical liaison with CANMET, Ottawa has been testing the application of geopolymers to mining wastes. Corporate efforts to date have concentrated upon reactive acid tailings, principally from the abandoned Kam-Kotia Mine site, and dewatered paint waste sludges. Test work conducted to date has successfully yielded geopolymer treated materials and wastes with increased chemical and structural stability. Wastes containing heavy metals, cyanides, arsenic and sulphur dioxide have been successfully geopolymerized."

Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is a promising environmentally acceptable clean-coal technology. A typical UCG system has two wells drilled from the surface into a coal seam with some separation of injection from production. The wells are connected underground by various linking techniques. After creating a combustion reactor in an underground coal seam, air and oxygen flow through the injection well. Heat energy and gases are collected from the production well. As gasification progresses, the combustion reactor is moved along the linking hole. Using this process, the fracturing activity inside the coal seam serves an important role for enlargement of the gasification zone because the surface area oxidization increases continuously by coal cracking. For effective coal gasification, fracturing activity must be controlled. Moreover, excess fractures inside the coal seam and surrounding rock can induce gas leakage, underground water contamination, subsidence, etc. Therefore, monitoring and control of fracturing activity in underground areas constitute key technologies for efficient and safe UCG. To monitor fracturing activity, we conducted laboratory and small-scale field experiments of UCG using acoustic emission (AE) measurements. UCG model tests were conducted for linking and coaxial types UCG models. Coaxial UCG systems are compact and are anticipated for application in underground coal seams having a complex geological structure. The UCG model consists of a coal block molded in a steel canister (20 liter capacity) with heat-resistant mortar, with a linking hole or a coaxial-hole passing through the coal block. During coal combustion, coal temperatures, production gas contents, and AE activity were monitored under the control of injection-air and oxygen flow rates. Results show that the combustion propagated inside the specimen along the linking hole. Many AE events were generated during coal combustion. The AE activity was related closely to temperature changes inside the coal block. This AE generation apparently results from crack initiation and extension around the coal combustion area under the influence of thermal stress. However, comparing the results from UCG models of linking and coaxial types, the gasification of the linking type model showed an average calorific value as high as 11.3 MJ/m3. The coaxial type yielded an average calorific value of produced gas as only 5.79 MJ/m3. In the coaxial type of UCG model, the combustion region was limited to the area around the coaxial hole. The AE activity was lower than in the linking type model. For small-scale UCG field experiments, linking and coaxial types were tested at an open pit coal mine in Hokkaido, Japan. Using a linking type UCG, 58.2 kg coal was processed in 39 h, with the calorific value estimated as 11 MJ/m3. However, the coaxial type UCG processed 7.0 kg coal in 9 h, yielding an estimated calorific value of 6.0 MJ/m3. These tendencies resemble those of results of laboratory UCG experiments. Results of these experiments demonstrate that AE monitoring is a useful tool to evaluate combustion reactors for efficient and safe UCG systems. To develop a coaxial UCG system, results show that fracture control around combustion reactors is indispensable.

For prevention of silicosis only respirable dust, ranging in size from < 0.5 to 5u needs to be controlled. As particles of this size have insignificant mass and momentum they follow air movements very closely. Consequently if contaminated air around dust sources is confined within enclosures and leakages maintained, strongly indraft dust is automatically controlled and capture velocities are of no concern.Dust SourcesAt metal mining operations ore is prepared for wet concentration by crushing it to mostly <3"" in size. This usually involves a jaw crusher, one or two cone crushers, one or more screens and several conveyors. Dust is actually produced only by the crushing action but it is liberated also when numerous fine particles contained in the ore stream are dispersed by surges and vibration at the discharge of the crushers, screens and headpulleys of conveyors. Furthermore, dust is dis¬persed when the slime adhering to the underside of the return portion of belts becomes dry and is rendered airborne by vibration and by cleaning floors especially where the slime has dropped."

"The Part of the Eastern Townships dealt with in this paper is shown in the accompanying figure. Each rectangle represents one of the topographic maps published by the Department of National Defence on a scale of one mile to one inch. Each sheet covers an area approximately 24 miles long and 17 miles wide, or slightly more than 400 square miles. The north-western part of the area figured, comprising the Upton, Aston, Becancour, and the two unnamed sheets, (Three Rivers and Yamaska), together with most of the Lyster, Drummondville, and St. Hyacinthe sheets, is largely covered by clays and sands deposited in interglacial and post-glacial time in the Champlain estuary, so that outcrops are widely scattered and in-formation is correspondingly sketchy. In the remainder of the area figured, comprising more than 4,000 square miles, outcrops are reasonably numerous and have been mapped on a scale of one mile to one inch, and the structure is moderately well understood.The Eastern Townships was an area of intense orogenic disturbance, apparently beginning late in the Cambrian or early in the Ordovician, and continuing till well on in the Devonian period. During this long period, which may have lasted for a hundred million years or more, the area was subjected from time to time to intense thrusts from the east and southeast. Each of these caused folding of the rocks, accompanied by faulting, raised parts of the area above sea-level, and presumably created ranges of mountains. Long periods of erosion cut away the mountains and reduced the area nearly to sea-level after which subsidence carried it below sea-level, and permitted further sediments to accumulate before the next thrust initiated the next cycle.The first of these movements, as stated, appears to have been in late Cambrian or early Ordovician time. The group of rocks known as Caldwell was folded and, south and east of the town of Asbestos, was thrown into great drag-folds before deposition of the next overlying series, termed the Beauceville, began. Unfortunately, the date of this orogeny is very imperfectly known, because both series of rocks have been so crushed and sheared that almost all fossil remains have been destroyed. Graptolites, found in one place in slates generally considered Beauceville, give that series a tentative Middle Ordovician age. In the Caldwell rocks, which underlie the Beauceville with great unconformity, no fossils whatever have yet been found. Thus, if the Beauceville rocks are correctly dated as mid-Ordovician, the best that can be said of the movement folding the Caldwell is that it took place at some time before Middle Ordovician."

Two of the more prominent pieces of equipment are the electric power shovel and dragline. These two types of equipment have increased significantly both In size and number over the last decade.Wire rope plays a significant part in the operation of these machine s. Proper selection of the correct wire rope as well as proper maintenance procedures, can result in a major saving of a mine&apos;s wire rope consumption.The most prominent ropes for shovels are the hoist ropes. Some shovels also employ crowd and retract ropes. Boom pennants are manufactured from both wire rope or galvanized bridge strand.The most prominent ropes for dragline excavators are hoist, drag, and dump ropes. Some dragline excavators have boom hoist ropes, and most large dragline excavators have a boom suspension system using galvanized bridge strand."
