The development of an ion exchange process for the recovery of vanadium from solutions containing low concentrations of vanadium and/or slurries is discussed. The process can be used to improve overall vanadium recovery throughout the plant, and/or to reduce the vanadium concentration of waste materials prior to their disposal. The development of the process on a laboratory and miniplant scale is discussed, and includes:selection of a suitable resin with the desired loading and elution characteristics; laboratory-scale testwork to evaluate the use of the resin in both resin-in-pulp and fixed bed configurations; recovery of a high-value vanadium product from the resin eluate; and a preliminary techno-economic assessment of the financial viability of the process.

The resource estimation process for the underground Mount Isa Copper Mine has undergone significant change. Block models are now created using a commercial software package as opposed to the in-house software that was previously used. With mineralisation occurring over a strike length of more than 4 km, Mineral Resources for all categories totalled 190 Mt at 2.7 per cent Cu at 31 December 2002. Estimation is by ordinary kriging with two separate models generated to cover the X41 and Enterprise orebodies respectively. The underlying Upper Basement Contact and the silica-dolomite alteration envelope are both used as hard boundaries to constrain the modelling. From a validated block model, grade shells are generated at the appropriate cut-off grade for a given area. The grade shells are depleted for mined voids and subdivided into 30 metre strike length blocks. Application of a SMU criteria and crown and pillar constraints results in failed blocks being culled from the resource inventory. Mineral Resource blocks are further subdivided into resource categories (Measured, Indicated, Inferred) by the Competent Person on the basis of geological confidence, taking account of geological and grade continuity, drillhole spacing and structural complexity (JORC, 1999). A geostatistical æconfidenceÆ category is incorporated into the block model as an additional tool for the categorisation process. The shapes are assessed in concert with a mining engineer to determine whether a reasonable expectation of mining potential exists and if not they are removed from the resource. The final categorised blocks constitute the Mineral Resource inventory and form the basis for conversion to Ore Reserves. The resultant Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are reported on an æinclusive ofÆ basis.

Finite element analysis is becoming a routine component of design of longwall extractions, now superseding more traditional somewhat intuitive approaches. Finite element modelling is relatively inexpensive and provides an adequate degree of similitude to give satisfactory analysis. The physical modelling of two decades ago is now largely replaced by numerical methods of which finite element is the best known. Important data for finite element work are physical properties, including creep aspects, introducing the non-linearity of stress response.Various computer packages are available and some were used to model two specific UK examples, using both linear and non-linear approaches. It appears that non-linear approaches will yield most benefit. The use of materially non-linear analysis is merited by the greater similitude it provides between model output and real mine situations.

The outbreak of open fires underground cause disturbances to the conditions of the mine ventilation process. Thermal and chemical effects due to fire create unsteady, transient states in airflow and the spread of combustion products in the mine ventilation network. Changes in airflow have an influence on the fire, constituting a sort of feed-back between the fire and the ventilation process. This paper deals with a numerical simulation method, which enables the determination of transients caused by fires. The mathematical model, of the simulation method considered, has been based upon a: simple model of combustion of fuel in the airway, unsteady exchange of heat between the fire, airflow and surrounding rocks, airflow in mine ventilation networks and the theory of heatflow in the rocks. Initial and boundary conditions allow the determination of a set of parameters describing the airflow, the propagation of combustion products, the tempera- ture of the fire and flow etc. due to the fire. The simulation method, facilitates a graphical presentation of the spread of combustion products throughout the network. The simulation method has been prepared for an IBM PC/AT Computer.

It is now common practice to use substantial amounts of recycled water in mineral processing plants to minimise both environmental discharge and withdrawal of fresh water from often limited water resources. Recycled water additions to process water are frequently obtained from sources such as tailings dams, tailings thickeners and concentrate dewatering. It has been suggested for some time that addition of recycled water to process water will impact the quality of the process water and that changes in water quality may influence flotation performance. To date, investigations of process water quality changes as a result of water recycling have been limited and as a consequence there are very few data available to substantiate these ideas. Thus the impact of recycling on process water quality remains largely unquantified. Over recent years we have conducted water quality studies at a number of mineral flotation plants with varying degrees of water recycle. This paper describes the results of these investigations, including data which suggest that build up of salinity due to recycling while it occurs, is reduced by fresh water make-up. The fate of flotation reagents such as collectors, promoters, frothers and flocculants during process water recycling has also been investigated. Results show that process water concentrations of these reagents vary from plant to plant, but that, with the exception of frothers, most reagents are generally removed from the system through mineral adsorption. In general, the results of these investigations suggest that recycling process water will not result in continuous increase in solute concentrations as appears to be the commonly held view.The effects of changing water quality on flotation can vary. In many cases, flotation conditions can be optimised to suit the water quality, while in others, treatment of the water may be necessary to obtain acceptable plant performance.

Copper entering a lead ,smelter in concentrate or from other sources is recoVered as matte and speiss which contain appreciable quantities of lead. The matte and speiss are usually sold to copper smelters to recover the copper content and also any gold and silver in these products, but the value of the lead is largely lost. Some copper plants pay for portion of the lead content, but regarded as a means of recovering lead it is more costly and less efficient than if the lead were recovered at the lead smelter.Because of the value of this lead loss, the metallurgy of copper recovery has assumed greater importance in recent years owing to the rise on the price of lead.Two processes are in use today to produce matte and speiss, namely the iron matte process and the soda matte process developed by the American Smelting and Refining Co. 1 in D.S.A. The latter process is characterised by a higher copper to lead ratio than the older iron matting process.The following analyses are typical of matte and speiss produced at Broken Hill Associated Smelters, by both processes, although the soda matte process is still in a developmental stage and experience indicates that matte and speiss of lower lead tenor can be produced under favourable conditions.

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. The mining production rate of two million tonnes per annum at Olympic Dam required greater servicing capacity than was available with the existing Whenan Shaft. To increase servicing capability a Service Decline was constructed from June 1986 to June 1987 extending 2000 m from the surface and linking up with inclining development from the existing Whenan Shaft workings. The decline was used for access of all men and materials during the construction phase of the ore handling system. During production, most mine servicing will be via the decline with hoisting of rock through Whenan Shaft.

Using a small scale laboratory pilot plant a series of tests have been conducted with the aim of investigating the influence of the zinc/acid ratio on the efficiency of zinc electrodeposition from an acidic sulphate solution. The results have shown that current efficiency is increased as the zinc/acid ratio is increased with no evidence of an optimum zinc/acid ratio. However the choice of a zinc/acid ratio for full scale operations must be a compromise between other parameters, spent electrolyte acidity and power efficiency, which also impact upon plant performance. The effect of various impurities has also been monitored and antimony, nickel and tin have been shown to be deliterious to current efficiency.

The Argyle Diamond Mine came on stream late in 1985 as the world's largest diamond producer in terms of carat output. The design of the process plant, including the heavy medium separation (HMS) facility which provides the initial stages for separation of diamonds from gangue, evolved over a lengthy period of feasibility study and site investigation into the final form described in this paper. The commissioning was carefully planned and co-ordinated, and culminated successfully with handover of the plant on schedule and within budget. This paper presents an iterative net present value (NPV) maximisation method to determine the optimum surface to underground transition depth for an orebody to be mined by multiple open pits and an underground mine. The determination of transition depth from open pit to underground mining is based on global production scheduling optimisation of open pit and underground mines using mixed integer linear programming. The method is applied to a case study coming from a gold mining complex with six open pits and a large underground mine using longhole open stoping. The results indicate potential improvements of the NPV of global operations when compared to the traditional techniques based on independently optimised open pit first, followed by underground mining.CITATION:Dagdelen, K and Traore, I, 2014. The biggest hard rock double-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world, with a diameter of 12.4 m, is currently excavating the North-South Bypass, which includes a crossing under the Brisbane River, Brisbane, Australia, to relieve the often congested road traffic in the city centre. Ten years ago a 10.7 m Mixshield giant helped to handle the Olympic Games in Sydney linking the airport with the city centre for an improved transportation of fascinated visitors. In Shanghai, currently the biggest TBM in the world with 15.43 m diameter presents excellent performance rates; and in Paris a convertible Mixshield could be quickly changed from earth pressure balanced (EPB) to slurry type in order to handle the very heterogeneous ground conditions. In Madrid a 15.2 m EPB giant finished its tunnel job four months ahead of schedule. Large-scale TBMs have proved their economic and innovative potential to create the current and future underground architecture of mega-cities. TBM technology has made further large innovative steps in the last decade. State-of-the-art is a TBM for very heterogeneous ground conditions comprising hard and soft rock with additional high groundwater pressure. The machine concept is adapted to the various ground conditions and allows for a quick and flexible application. Ground treatment by means of additives developed to a helpful tool in this connection. To meet the special challenges of urban tunnel projects of nowadays it is of very high importance, beside applying highest developed technology of TBM, to have a comprehensive technical support during the project phase and to develop positive relationships between all participants of the project which last longer than only for one project.

The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender. In addressing a short-term operational need for the relocation of a tailings storage facility reclaim pond, a mine has achieved a host of water management objectives. Through effective planning and adoption of a strategic æwhole of mine lifeÆ approach, the mine has achieved significant environmental, social and economic benefits. A review of all water management aspects across the site identified a host of other interrelated water issues and concerns which, if dealt with individually, would prove too costly for individual operational departments. When considered as a whole, however, the issues became opportunities and provided the stimulus for integration of the site water management system. The development of site water and solute balance models provided the tool by which a number of water management options/strategies could be evaluated. The conceptual design and costing of the proposed water infrastructure further facilitated the evaluation of the multiple benefits to be gained from each option. A business case could then be made to mine management for the preferred option. The recommended water management strategy finally recommended to the mine not only provided a tailings storage facility (TSF) reclaim pond, but also provided for:increased wastewater recovery from the TSF, the capture of all waste rock dump run-off, additional water harvesting from local creeks, increased wastewater reuse, improved environmental water management, infrastructure that could be used by the local community after mine closure, and overall cost savings. This paper illustrates how effective water management planning can provide both short-term economic and environmental benefits, as well as long-term social benefits.

Increases in mechanisation and mining at greater depths are leading to additional problems of heat and humidity in many mines. As a result there is now an escalating demand for temperature prediction simulations appli- cable to underground environments. After a brief review of the present situation with regard to world mining and the use of environmental programs, the paper goes on to discuss in moderate detail the mathe- matical modelling of the many parameters that govern the condition of the ventilating air in a mine. The development of a program that gives the temperature distribution for a mine ventilation system is then outlined. The practicality of the program is discussed and the presentation format for users is explained. Simplification of input data requirements and the acquisition of data from other planning programs are an integral part of the commercial application of this program.

Ore-bearing minerals that are located along microfractures are always susceptible to loss during the breakage and sampling of the material. Further losses occur with on-site sample preparation and splitting prior to laboratory analysis. In these cases solid whole rock channel or core samples should be handled with due care to ensure all fines and loose particles are collected and included in the sample for total chemical analysis.Similarly open hole and reverse circulation drill methods are not usable in areas containing old mine workings, heavily fractured ground or highly degraded/oxidised mineral assemblages. Nor are these methods usable to assess a bulk mineable target where the enriched zones were peripheral to or between old mine cavities.

A previous paper (1) indicated that electrowinning of copper at current densities considerably higher than those currently employed in electrowinning operations is technically feasible. It is of interest, therefore, to establish the extent of economic benefits which may be obtained from high current density operation and to determine the value of the optimum current density. Optimization of electrorefining processes has been discussed in considerable detail by Ibl (2) and Schmidt (3) whop from theoretical considerations, derived expressions for the optimum current density. In this work, general equations relating both the capital investment and the production cost for copper electrowinning plants to current density and plant capacity are established. From these equations, the optimum current density can be calculated for any desired plant capacity.
