The mining industry faces concurrent pressures of reducing water use, energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in coming years. However, the interactions between water and energy use, as well as GHG emissions have largely been neglected in modelling studies to date. In addition, investigations tend to focus on the unit operation scale, with little consideration of whole-of-site or regional scale effects.This paper presents an application of a hierarchical systems model (HSM) developed to represent water, energy and GHG emissions fluxes at scales ranging from the unit operation, to the site level, to the regional level. The model allows for the linkages between water use, energy use and GHG emissions to be examined in a flexible and intuitive way, so that mine sites can predict energy and emissions impacts of water use reduction schemes and vice versa. This paper examines whether this approach can also be applied to the regional scale with multiple mine sites.The model is used to conduct a case study of several coal mines in the Bowen Basin, Australia, to compare the utility of centralised and decentralised mine water treatment schemes. The case study takes into account geographical factors (such as water pumping distances and elevations), economic factors (such as capital and operating cost curves for desalination treatment plants) and regional factors (such as regionally varying climates and associated variance in mine water volumes and quality).The case study results indicate that treatment of saline mine water incurs a trade-off between water and energy use in all cases. However, significant cost differences between centralised and decentralised schemes can be observed in a simple economic analysis. This paper outlines the rationale for the location of the crusher, geotechnical analysis and basis of ground support design, design and scheduling of the chamber and supporting excavations as well as the operational outcomes and lessons learned. Contributions from mining operations, planning, geotechnical and infrastructure teams enabled the Crusher Station One excavation to be completed on schedule, with opportunities taken for underground mining and infrastructure to work safely in parallel to deliver crusher station infrastructure on schedule. Installation of crusher infrastructure was ongoing at the time of writing.

The Hauraki Goldfield consists of a large number of volcanic-associated epithermal gold deposits within the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), North Island , New Zealand; it is the most accessible and most studied of the Southwest Pacific gold regions. The deposits occur generally as steeply dipping quartz veins and breccia sheets in faults and fractures.From a tectonic perspective, the CVZ is generally considered a Neogene convergent volcanic arc constructed under an extensional tectonic regime; the common tectonic setting for epithermal mineralisation. The gold deposits are mostly hosted in subaerial andesitic arc-type volcanic rocks. Temporally, however, mineralisation is associated with rhyolitic rocks of a bimodal volcanic suite that may represent a back-arc environment. Rifting and calderas may be important components of the latter regime, but this is not yet clear; the general structural framework controlling the location of CVZ gold deposits remains poorly understood. Double corrosion protection (DCP) rock bolts have evolved to become complicated assemblies comprising numerous components. This complexity is mainly associated with durability considerations including potential exposure to adverse groundwater conditions and ensuring separation of dissimilar metals within the bolt assembly itself.Recent progress in the construction of glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GRP) rock bolts have the potential to provide a viable alternative to conventional steel rock bolts in civil tunnelling applications. The durability of the material results in a much simpler bolt detail and permits the use of resin rather than solely cement based grouts.This paper presents the findings of the comparative structural testing of GRP bolts with conventional DCP steel bolts. The axial load performance, including stiffness, ultimate capacity and ductility of bolts are compared. Shear behaviour of bolts is considered, including durability issues associated with damage to the plastic sleeve used in DCP bolts.The paper also considers other issues which are relevant to the design of temporary and permanent rock bolts used in tunnel support, such as initial tensioning and grouting. To speed up multivariate geostatistical simulation it is common to transform the set of attributes into spatially uncorrelated factors that can be simulated independently. One decorrelation method is the method of minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF), where a two structure linear model of coregionalisation is assumed. The transformation decorrelates the theoretical model exactly, but the actual data are only approximately decorrelated. The MAF transformation can therefore be seen as a special case of a non-orthogonal approximate diagonaliser of a set of symmetric matrices. A more general approach for approximate joint diagonalisation (AJD) has been developed in the context of blind source separation. For these AJD algorithms no assumptions are made beyond symmetry of the individual matrices and so they can be applied to a family of experimental semivariogram matrices. In their application there are no restrictions on the number of structures in the linear model of coregionalisation (LMC) thus removing one of the conditions placed on the subsequent modelling of the spatial structure of the factors. In this paper the general background for the U-WEDGE AJD method is presented. It is shown that the U-WEDGE method achieves better spatial decorrelation than the MAF method. The factors derived from U-WEDGE are simulated using conditional turning bands simulation and then backtransformed to attribute space.

Australia has an enviable global reputation as a leader in health and safety outcomes in the hazardous industry of mining, in part due to an increased application of risk management regarding operational planning and mining practice. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) initiated a major project, RISKGATE, to build, capture and deliver a national body of knowledge to assist companies with the management of risk in coal mining. The online system contains information for tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives underground, explosives open cut, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human–machine interface, tailings dams, occupational hygiene and inrush. In 2014, RISKGATE is developing content for fitness for work (fatigue, drugs, alcohol, physical well-being, psychosocial well-being).This paper analyses underground mining fatalities in Australia and the United States since 2002 and introduces RISKGATE with a focus on the knowledge base for management of hazards in underground operations. Through capturing coal industry expert operational knowledge, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover within the mining industry. I he Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company (ER&S) has oper- ated a copper smelter at Port Kembla, NSW since 1908. The feasibility of modernising the smelter was recently studied and external influences were shown to have a substantial impact on the project economics. Profita- bility is determined by the relative magnitudes of treatment charge income earned from processing raw materials and the operating costs incurred. Treatment charges are usually denominated in U.S. dollars and are deter- mined by market forces in the world copper industry. ER&S is no different from other Australian manufacturing industries in that it must maintain its competitive position by controlling costs. The modernisation project seeks to achieve this through new technology and improved labour Productivity.

There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

It has long been recognised that narrow vein mining needs innovative approaches to mine access and mining methods in order to improve the economics of this vital part of the mining industry. The mining equipment used currently requires large openings in narrow vein-type deposits making mining operations uneconomical. In view of this and other shortcomings of the current mining practices, a study was initiated to investigate the potential of using low profile electric loader with mounted conveyor in conjunction with the electric monorail haulage system (EMTS) to load and haul the blasted material, particularly in decline development and main haulages. Computer simulation based on the General Purpose Simulation System/Henrikson (GPSS/H) is used to model the system and evaluate its performance. The results are compared with those for conventional mining using trucks and loaders. The EMTS provides competitive haulage rates in substantially smaller excavations than is currently achievable. According to simulation results, the electric loader in conjunction with the EMTS had the same number of blasts as the conventional system and hence the same advance rate of 3.33 m per 12 hour shift. The underground mining industry is seeing unprecedented shortages in skilled labour. Migration to Australia being at an all-time low is a leading concern, with pandemic-induced border closures and lockdowns only exacerbating the skills shortage, not causing it. The skills shortage is forecast to peak in 2023 and remain high beyond 2025. With this skills shortage in mind, mining companies throughout Australia are trying to deal with stricter protocols around Health and Safety (H&S) legislation, as well as more stringent controls on quality assurance, particularly as underground mines are reaching greater depths and extending into ‘unchartered territory’. The cumulation of this is proving to be a major hurdle in ‘effective’ operational geotechnical management. The drive for automation in mining is bringing another level of complexity. However, ‘once automation is up and running, it presents the opportunity to access talent pools that may not normally be available. There is also a change in skillset that will be required to drive automation. ‘The top two emerging roles that will be critical for the future of the mining industry are artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) specialists, and process-automation specialists’ (Writer, 2021). If anything positive has come from the pandemic, it has shown that remote working can be effective and that the drive for automation and critical evaluation of skills required on-site should be given greater priority. UQ acknowledges that the industry is changing, and that digital technology is required to be offered in mining related disciplines. Industry and academia need to do more to promote geotechnical engineering in mining and balance the curriculum to suit the future of mining and make it more enticing. The average cost of a geotechnical failure is about $5 million in coalmines and can be into the hundreds of millions of dollars if production is affected (Cartledge Mining and Geotechnics, 2020). The cost of a good geotechnical design far outweighs the potential losses if a failure were to occur. This alludes to the growing importance of experienced geotechnical consultancies playing a pivotal role in managing mine site geotechnical hazards, while the industry is developing the next generation of geotechnical engineers.

"Sensor based automatic ore sorting technologies are used in the minerals industries to efficiently remove waste and submarginal grade material from crushed and screened run-of-mine (ROM) ore, producing a coarse (typically >10 mm) upgraded preconcentrate at an early stage in the mineral processing circuit. This avoids additional energy intensive downstream processing of this rejected component of the ROM feed, leading to lower unit operating costs and reduced tailings disposal volumes.Test work on bulk low-grade gold ore stockpile samples from Central Norseman Gold Proprietary Limited has been conducted, indicating high gold recoveries as well as high material rejection rates. A financial model, based on these results, evaluates grade sensitivity and identifies a minimum stockpile grade for adequate financial returns. The base case modelling estimates that the ex-stockpile grade (including the fines bypassed fraction) can be more than doubled through ore sorting and that the project will be highly viable with strong cash flow generation at stockpile grades as low as 0.7 g/t gold. The modelling will enable the company to benchmark ore sorting options against stockpile reclaim and screening operations currently employed. Citation:Parry, A N and van Wyk, G, 2016. Peak Gold Mine is a new gold and base metal mining project being developed by Enterprise Metals (a 100 per cent subsidiary of CRA) at Cobar in the centre of New South Wales. The Cobar district has a long history of copper and gold mining operations stretching back to the 1870s. Extensive gold and base metal mineralisation was discovered at the Peak in 1981 below a series of gold mines which had been active around the turn of the century. Evaluation of the deposit through the 1980s led to CRA's decision to develop the project for production at a capacity of 450 000 tonnes per annum in late 1992. The project has been developed with a green fields approach despite the long history of mining in the local area. This approach has lead to several innovative ideas being trialed at the site which are expected to result in the operation being a low cost producer of gold and base metals.

While sampling techniques used by the mineral industry continue to improve, sampling is still an area which is often neglected. It is often left to personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of sampling. Yet sampling and sample processing are of vital importance. There is little point in making major capital investments in the latest analytical equipment and spending considerable time obtaining the best analytical precision, if the sample provided for analysis is seriously biased in the first place.

For nearly two decades water scientists have been debating the need to use appropriate models for the questions being asked and the data available. This paper puts forward a rationale for a hierarchical framework for water balance modelling as it applies to mine sites. The hierarchy is based on the complexity of models and their data requirements. Scientific models are the most complex and require the most data; next is engineering models, then systems models and the simplest representations are given by conceptual models. A position is put forward that systems models have a range of uses that the others do not provide. A systems model, called SiteMiser, is described and its calibration illustrated. The model is applied to seven coal mines from the Northern Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Currently, there is little relationship between total water use and coal production. This relationship is not any stronger when fresh (raw) water is compared to reused water. Leading practice water use levels are simulated for all sites. The simulation results demonstrate that there is considerable opportunity to reduce water consumption and, in particular, to import less fresh (raw) water to the sites.

Currently all engineering schools face a common problem, an ever expanding technological base which must be presented to students within a fixed time period. Traditionally the programmes of study taken by engineering students destined for employment within the mineral industry include formal instruction in aspects of management to an extent greater than that presented in other engineering disciplines. Providing an adequate coverage of an expanding technological base within a fixed time span can lead to a reduction in the time available for 'non-technical' subjects, such as 'management'. This situation calls for periodic review of course contents and allocations of time. Following consultation with an Advisory Committee representing the mineral industry, mining research establishments, and kindred teaching institutions, the University of Melbourne has revised its mining programme. N Longhole Open Stope at The Zinc Corporation Mine was developed in an area with large and continuous tension cracks. These cracks resulted fran widespread block subsidence into previously mined areas. The practical problems encountered and their solutions are discussed together with an outline of a new method of stope wall support using large diameter dowels installed sub-parallel to the stope wall.

This research is about human development and socio-economic progress of the main mining areas of Chile in the period 1990 - 2007, and especially about the positive effects that mining activity has on poverty reduction and indicators related to the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. The analysis is doubly interesting, if one considers that the economic and social developments in Chile, recognised and prominent among the Latin American economies and developing nations, are more evident in mining areas as Tarapacß and Antofagasta (northern Chile), which concentrated than more 70 per cent of investments and mining assets in the country. Additionally, the study concludes with methodological reflections for the evaluation of socio-economic impact in the mining industry in developing countries.

To respond to ever-increasing challenges, mining companies have been experimenting with new business models and technologies in order to speed mine development, production, processing and transport. The various experiments involve mobile access to data, intelligent sensors, advanced analytics, virtual collaboration, virtual reality, automated equipment, remote operations centres and strategic partnerships. A synthesis of all these components creates a ænetwork effectÆ that can dramatically improve the overall effectiveness the entire operation. The concept of the Network Centric Mine borrows from a variety of industries, including defence, aerospace, aviation, petroleum, utilities and manufacturing. Central to the concept are improvements to the way we connect people, process, information and technology, resulting in a more highly collaborative business model, with roles and processes designed to take advantage of new technology. The components of the mining operation act as a connected network aimed at a common goal, regardless of the boundaries of organisation and location.The design of this new organisational ecosystem needs to take into account the recent advances that enable the æplug and playÆ integrated collaborative environment, including cloud computing, mobile devices and social networking, as well as advances in augmented reality, robotics, geo-location, digital labelling, simulation and analytics. However, the most consistent lesson from other industries is the need to properly enable the behaviour and process changes necessary for success.Benefits from adopting a network centric approach include the more effective use of scarce expertise, improved data and information analysis, reduced process variance, and more informed and faster decision-making. The future of mining will see more technology savvy workers who will drive the adoption of new processes. Technological advances the sensor design and performance for logging while drilling (LWD) instrumentation offer considerable opportunities in iron ore exploration. Here we focus on the development of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) LWD tool. NMR is an advanced geotechnical logging technology capable of providing in situ measurements of the porosity, pore size and permeability of the formation of interest. The ability to provide real-time characterisation of iron-ore systems is beneficial to both drilling operations as well as real-time formation evaluation. The development of an NMR LWD tool for mineral exploration drilling has previously not been achieved due to the significant technical and environmental challenges associated with the design and operation of such a tool. The tool outlined in this work is designed to work in reverse-circulation (RC) drilling systems. As such, the tool needs to be compatible with the RC drill-string, as well as being highly robust to survive the shocks and vibrations experienced during RC drilling operations. The magnetic physics of the probe must be capable of measuring at the appropriate depth into formation whilst being subject to the array of motions experienced during drilling operations. Furthermore, conducting accurate NMR measurements in an iron ore formation is challenging and the measurement methodology must be tailored to characterise the magnetic environment. The tool also requires high-powered electronics capable of operating the necessary pulse sequences for excitation and acquisition. The resultant tool design must therefore optimise the inherent trade-offs which exist between the physical components (ie mechanical structure, magnetic components and electronic hardware) in order to operate appropriately whilst not hindering RC drilling operations. Current experimental analysis of the prototype indicates that the current probe design exhibits the required measurement specifications and is nearing field testing. Future work will look towards commercialisation of the instrument.

Invariably when a new plant is cammissioned operations personnel on takeover look at ways and means of reducing certain restrictions and improving process conditions. These improvements are generally of a mechanical/engineering nature with minor metallurgical alterations to fine tune and maximise recovery. Most operations are continually reviewing and updating existing equipment and equipment spares to gain the maximum performance hereby reducing operating costs. Design of current carbon-in-pulp/carbon- in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants has evolved to such a high degree that many of the medium sized plants can have a "blue printed" design from one to the next if the same engineering designer is used.
