During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. The analyses of the samples upon which most of the work has been carried out are given in Table 1.Note: Oxygen was not determined, but from the work of H. W. Worner, in the Rosenhain Memorial Laboratory, it appears probable that it was approximately 0-0003% in all samples.

The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. The Tui Mine is an abandoned Pb-Zn mine giving rise to water quality problems in the Te Aroha region of Coromandel, New Zealand. When sampled in September 2002, for example, both the Tui and Tunakohoia Streams draining the mine site exceeded ANZECC (2000) water quality guidelines for aquatic life protection (Cu, Cd and Zn) and recreational quality (Cd). Based on trace metal mass flux (kg/yr) from parts of the mine site, the principal pathways by which Cu, Zn and Cd contamination reach these streams have been identified as:the tailings dam leachate,the diverted stream water from above the dam,the drainage from Adit 5 (which accounts for 95 % of Zn and Cd contamination in Tunakohoia Stream), andto a lesser extent, run-off from waste rock piles below Adit 4 level. Of the various remediation options, which have been proposed for the site, the following are identified as providing the best protection for the Tui and Tunakohoia streams:stabilising the tailings dam embankment and capping the embankment and tailings,constructing and/or cleaning out engineered diversion drains around the perimeter of the tailings dam to divert surface water away from the tailings dam, andinstalling bulkheads within Adit 5. A formal postal survey of the people of Te Aroha (66 respondents from 230 surveys) indicated that their priority was that the site be made safe for the public to visit, and used for recreation. As soil samples in potential recreational areas of the mine site, significantly exceeded guideline values for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and As, soil removal or capping clearly also needs to be part of a remediation plan. Development of the site as a historical/ecotourism area was viewed favourably, as this may encourage more visitors to the Te Aroha area as well as educate local residents.

Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades.Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue Rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill.Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times.This paper explores the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process, and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included.Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers.CITATION:Grigg, N J and Delemontex, G J, 2015. The Australian gold industry has made large steps forward in the last few years. This progress has been driven by improvements in mining and processing technology, the high price of gold and by a favourable legislative, political and taxation environment. This paper concentrates on improvements in gold project development, process engineering and technology as seen by BHP Engineering, Perth, Australia. The paper describes technical aspects of successful gold project development including metallurgical test work, feasibility studies, choice of process flow sheet (gravity, heap leach, carbon in pulp (CIP), carbon in leach (CIL) or other routes). It sets out our views on plant design, plant construction, procurement and project management. A case study for a small plant recently completed in the Philippines is presented as a solution to the problems often encountered in treating quartz vein gold deposits.

The Martha epithermal Au-Ag deposit contains multiple generations of quartz veins with a range of textures. We examined: +        vein textures, +        crosscutting vein relationships, and +        the paragenetic sequence within the pit walls as well as a wide range of hand specimens. Samples include host rock, breccia, and veins, but these groups are not distinct; instead, they form a continuum.   Veins at Martha mine show a wide range of textures on a local scale; these textures also change significantly over both the lateral and vertical extent of the pit. Common textures include crustiform bands, comb quartz, colloform bands, platy quartz, massive quartz, drusy quartz, sedimentary textures and brecciation.   Vein grades relate to textures. Many textures, including crustiform, platy, cherty, and sedimentary textures display predominantly low grades, but some textures are linked with high grades, such as ginguro, massive and comb quartz where they are associated with visible base metal sulphides and/or electrum. Host rocks and most breccias are low grade, as most samples contain <2 ppm Au.

The Permian-Triassic Bowen Basin and the Jurassic-Cretaceous Surat Basin evolved in a backarc tectonic setting behind an active convergent plate margin in eastern Gondwana. Several extensional (Early Permian; Eocene) and contractional (mid-Permian; Early Triassic; Middle-Late Triassic; early Late Cretaceous) intraplate deformational events are recognised in the basins. These can be correlated with similar events in the New England Orogen that was being deformed in the Late Permian-Late Triassic as a foreland thrust belt. The intraplate deformations were probably the consequence of plate interactions, including the accretion of terranes, at the ancient active plate margin, remnants of which now occur in New Zealand.

Explosive properties are typically summarised on manufacturers’ technical data sheets. The values most commonly referred to are the density of the explosive, the energy it is expected to release and its velocity of detonation (VOD). This information is provided so that blasting engineers can make a considered selection of the most appropriate product for a particular blasting application. As an example, a lower VOD and energy product is better suited to blasting in soft, weathered material. In contrast, blasting hard, competent material generally requires a higher energy product which is usually characterised by higher VOD and energy.A review of the technical information supplied by manufacturers shows a wide range of methods of reporting both VOD and energy. A meaningful comparison between products from different suppliers is almost impossible to achieve based on these data. For a similar product, one supplier may have a VOD range of 2800–5800 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 1.34 while a corresponding product from another supplier is quoted with a VOD range of 3100–6300 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 192. In the end, the user has to rely on the level of confidence available from their experience using a certain type of explosive in the type of rock to be blasted at that mine.This paper reviews some of the technical and supporting information that is freely available in the literature and attempts to provide some clarity as to what the numbers that are reported actually mean for the end user. There are available today many various types of mixing systems, tank types and process liquors confronting the process designer of gold adsorption circuits. This short paper is to give the process designer an insight into the special mixing requirements for resin-in-leach and resin-in-pulp, plus the advantages and disadvantages of the various mixing systems that are available to agitate the required tank shapes. An understanding of the latest developments in this important process area of gold production is addressed and information given on the results of resin degradation in various tank sizes over long periods of mechanical agitation.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... But to fill dry a receptacle of known volume with calcines, as described by Mr. Norwood, gives the following apparentspecific gravities:

WHEN the writer resided at Zeehan, qn the West Coast of Tasmania, some years ago, he took a keen interest in the geology of the district and availed himself of the opportunity to investigate occurrences, of the varied minerals in which the field abounds. The following notes were compiled as a result of one of his periodical visits to the outlying mining districts, when an examination was made of the bindsay Reward tin mining property, which has an area of 140 acres. This is most easily reached from Renison Bell, the centre of the North Dundas tin-fields, on the Emu Bay railway, 'about' eight miles north east of Zeehan. Thence a pack track some 14 -miles long connects with the mine, crossing the Piemah River by a fine suspension bridge.The mine itself is situated on the main south leading spot of the Parson's Hood Range, at an altitude of some 1600 ft. above sea level. The Parson's Hood Range is composed of granite and is an extension of the rugged Meredith Range. A remarkable feature is the uniform topography of the surrounding country when viewed from the peaks. Except where dissected by the rivers and creeks, the surface is practically level and, indeed, affords a striking illustration of an ancient uplifted peneplain.The mine has been opened by means of trenches and adits, and the ore-body proved to extend for a length of 30 chains, with an average width of about 100 ft. Its general trend is west-north-west, and its dip, which is steep, corresponds to that of the country-rocks. These latter, which are of sedimentary origin and generally regarded as of pre-Silurian age, have been tilted at high angles, consequent, no doubt, on the crustal movements produced by the intrusion of the huge granitic masses which now form the high ranges in the vicinity.It may be here remarked that it is not Within the scope of this paper to deal with the sequence of events leading to the geological structure...

In choosing such a threadbare subject for a paper I fear that I may in some measure be taxing your patience, yet as upon the accuracy with which the work is done depends the result of conclusions drawn as to whether a property will be profitable to work or otherwise. The subject cannot be too well threshed out, and I trust that upon certain points that have come within my own experience I may be able to give 'hints that will prevent others from making mistakes. First as to alluvial. Gold is often found from the grass roots down, often ill particular horizontal bands in the wash, but more generally concentrated either on a true or false bottom. When sampling dry ground for proposed hydraulicing I have obtained accurate results only by taking the whole of the dirt from measured shafts, stacking it as it was lifted on a tarpaulin, and putting the whole quantity through a carefully constructed box. In wet ground careful borings will in most cases give fairly correct results, but where it is possible to sink shafts, that should be done, as a guide is then also obtained as to the nature of the wash, whether it is bouldery, cemented, or free. Sampling in a face is a more difficult work in many respects than in new ground, as so many elements enter into action to spoil accurate sampling. Of course the great thing to avoid is sampling in any place where either natural or artificial concentration has taken place, and very much has to be left to circumstance and the sampler's own judgment. In passing I may mention that I have on several occasions seen diggers deceive themselves in wet ground where they were sinking and coping as best they might with water. They would take a dish of dirt from the bottom of their hole, pan it off, and take the result as a fair yield, and on the strength of it perhaps spend a lot of time and money in tail races and whereas in their sample there had been a process of concentration carried on, the movement and working in the water had caused the gold to work down, and anything like accurate estimations by the method pursued were out of the question.

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked the Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No.2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fault has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by = 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It is composed of bands of milky æbuckÆ quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains within quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist. The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.   The Golden Bar lode lies within a steeply dipping normal fault, which, on its footwall side, is adjacent to a 40 m-wide, shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone. Within 1 m of the lode, the shear foliation has been dragged down to nearly parallel the lode footwall. Wall rock alteration is manifested by a marked increase in K and Rb, which correlate with abundant illite/muscovite and K-feldspar within 2 m of the footwall of the lode. Amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite show a progressive decrease towards the lode. As and Sb increase close to the lode, but are at background levels within the lode itself. Enhanced Cr (150-430 ppm) in the quartz, relative to the schists (~40 ppm), suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic rocks, such as the metabasites from the hanging wall of the lode (~400 ppm Cr).

Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 55 km south of Charters Towers and 134 km south-west of Townsville. The gold deposit was discovered on the northern end of the Drummond Basin in 1983 and first open pit production began in 1986. Mining progressed underground in the 1990’s and gold production peaked in the early 2000’s as the main Vera/Nancy lodes were extracted, producing 330k oz in 2003 (a record at the time). More recently, as Ore Reserves and grade have diminished, the mine has had to develop innovative mining practices to maximise recovery of the remaining Mineral Resource. This has included a modified sublevel caving method against previously mined/backfilled zones. The method has been coined modified sublevel shrinkage (MSLS). Full scale trials of the new mining method have been successfully completed. This has allowed the site to revaluate the Mineral Resource and include areas into the Ore Reserve that were once deemed sterilised, adding significant value to the operation and extending its life-of-mine. This paper describes the first of two large scale MSLS trials and key operational learnings from it.

Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.

Using a scientific-principled definition of global socio-ecological sustainability can be a useful basis for planning precious and base metal mining projects. The mining industry faces key challenges of; viability of the minerals industry; the control, use and management of land; national and local socio-economic development; environmental management; materials stewardship; and access to information. Using a framework for strategic sustainable development to assess the current reality of mine project development has resulted in identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement between current best practices and a desired vision of sustainability constrained by science based principles. These gaps indicate opportunities to strengthen current strategies, tools, and actions with a deeper understanding of socio-ecologic systems and a first-order, principled definition of sustainability, enabling success in moving towards achieving a sustainable society, ie sustainability. Evaluation of mine project development and their impacts on ecological and social systems using a systems perspective which recognises the underlying principles of operation, delays, feedback loops and response to change highlight specific opportunities to create value for social, economic and ecologic systems. Envisioning this future for mining projects within a sustainable society can be done by evaluating their development and operations guided by the sustainability principles. Performance indicators play a key role in measuring progress towards achieving sustainability goals yet it is necessary to consider whether indicators capture the whole systems perspective. Connected to this broader view, indicators can contribute much value to the mining industryÆs sustainability journey. This paper examines how current processes for mining projects can be developed using a whole systems perspective and measured using holistically designed performance indicators.

This paper discusses various issues surrounding the metallurgical control for furnaces, especially focusing on processes with long time-constants and æmetallurgical memoriesÆ. Examples will focus on furnaces accepting particulate and sometimes ill-defined feeds, eg submerged-arc furnaces, blast furnaces, secondary scrap smelting operations, recycling operations, waste incinerators, etc. Generally, because of the usually higher metallurgical time constant of these furnaces, these reactors have to be controlled in a feed-forward manner by the use of a hybrid of æblack boxÆ or empirical and ægrey boxÆ semi-empirical first principles metallurgical modelling and simulation techniques in a supervisory metallurgical control capacity.

Mr. Chairman, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for asking me to your conference, with its most fundamental and appropriate topic of 'Investment in Mining'. I must confess at the outset that I am one of those Australians who has rarely visited your fair land of New Zealand. This is in fact only my third visit, with all three related to Institute Conferences, and all much too brief. In so many ways your country provides a counterpoise to ours, despite the obvious disparities in size and population. And I am not only referring to the Bledisloe Cup! We would certainly each be much more lonely without the other, in this strange long-lost corner of the globe û if globes can have corners. Such an important factor in common in our shared heritages has been the mineral industry we have won from our alluvials and our rocks û especially for gold. So much of the major mineral developments which have supplied the world's appetite for metals and fuels in the past two hundred years has come from the countries settled in that period by people from Europe, especially those from the British Isles. So much of the technology for mineral and metal extraction has come from the skills of those people in New Zealand and Australia. And so much of the further development of metal processing and manufacturing of productive equipment has come from those people and from their cousins throughout the world. It is, I believe, a fair question to ask why we have failed to build on those early and considerable successes, and why we have in so many ways apparently been so content to allow others to add value to our raw materials, and to take our technological developments on to levels far beyond those that our domestic markets could sustain.
