The Waihi-Waitekauri region hosts numerous low-sulfidation epithermal deposits that both outcrop and occur at depth. Zones of intense hydrothermal alteration enclose the Au-Ag bearing quartz vein deposits. Hydrothermal alteration includes the destruction of magnetite by hydrothermal fluids, pervasive silicification adjacent to quartz lodes and potassium enrichment due to adularia and illite deposition. High-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric, and new gravity data delineate distinct geophysical anomalies associated with hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation. Five magnetically quiet zones occur in the region varying in size from 3 to 34 km2 and in geometry from circular to irregular zones. These zones represent the near-surface extent of strong to intense hydrothermal alteration associated with fossil geothermal systems. All epithermal deposits in the region occur in magnetically quiet zones. Over 120 new gravity stations together with existing data across the Waihi district have defined a positive Bouguer gravity anomaly coincident with the magnetically quiet zone. Eastern and western gradients of 50 gu/km bound the anomaly that contains two flat gravity highs west and east of the Waihi deposit. Strong potassium signatures in airborne radiometric data correlate with outcropping zones of alteration and are consistent with the presence of adularia and illite minerals. Hydrothermally altered zones are represented by areas of low Th/K ratios as a result of low thorium concentrations in andesite and elevated potassium levels in altered zones.

Fluor, together with our clients, has yielded significant reductions in the total cost of mining projects by employing a systematic and methodical process of cost reduction. This paper outlines this structured approach to reducing the total cost of projects through the gathering of information, the evaluation of the zero base design, and the development of the execution strategy for the project in the study phase.Over the recent iron ore boom the cost of growth projects escalated rapidly due to a variety of factors including the engineering cost of re-designing facilities, construction in remote areas and an increase in the ‘perceived’ capital requirements for maintainable and operable facilities.Fluor has made strategic steps towards safely reducing the capital intensity of projects, by working with clients to develop zero base designs which utilise the minimum technical requirements in order to meet the function of the plant and then add cost for safety, maintenance and operability only where clearly justified.This paper has set forth a structured three phased approach to focus the team on reducing capital cost while maintaining a low increase in engineering effort.The initial ‘gather’ phase focuses the team on acquiring information and identifying decisions that will need to be made so that the team can prioritise and focus the attention on areas that will provide the greatest benefit. Within this phase the identification of zero base design requirements, review of lessons learnt and analysis of capital cost levers, allows the team to identify the key decisions on the project that will affect the capital cost.In the subsequent ‘evaluation’ phase the team established the zero base design, using the hierarchy of cost reduction as a guide to focusing the team’s attention on high yielding cost saving opportunities.In the final phase the team develops the execution strategy which will yield the least cost using strategies and tools such as modularisation, standardisation, replication, strategic sourcing and 3D design.CITATION:Merrells, J, 2017. Lower greenschist quartzo-feldspathic schists within the N-S trending Earnslaw Synform of the Upper Wakatipu area are pervaded by late-stage quartz filled extensional and extensional shear fractures, with quartz-scheelite lodes infilling normal faults. Exposed veins/lodes mapped over at least 1000 km2 define a paleoflow system developed during late metamorphic exhumation of the schist. Both veins and lodes have consistent angular relationships to the schist foliation independent of their location on the Earnslaw synform. Unfolding the synform leads to a regional subhorizontal foliation and a systematic set of subvertical quartz veins striking NNW extending over a depth interval >5 km, striking parallel to a set of normal faults hosting the quartz-scheelite lodes. The structures define an extensional regime with s1 sub-vertical, s3 oriented WSW-ENE, a low differential stress, and suprahydrostatic fluid pressures.   The quartz-scheelite lodes (<2 m thick) occupy faults which cross-cut the quartz veins, and are traceable for a few hundred metres, at most. The lodes consist of laminated and/or massive quartz, slivers of crushed and folded schist, random and discontinuous lenses of scheelite with clay selvages separating the lode from relatively undisturbed wallrock schist. Textural evidence suggests that slip developed incrementally with total displacement on faults during lode formation on the order of a few ten's of metres.   The distribution of Glenorchy veins demonstrates broad scale hydrothermal flow through low-permeability schist, channelled within dilatant mesh style structures comprising interconnected shear and extension fractures. Flow through the lodes was likely derived from the greater surrounding area via the interlinked network of fractures and focused into the low displacement shears. Available evidence suggests the system developed together in a uniform extensional stress regime toward the bottom half of the seismogenic regime.

The use of column flotation cells for recovery of phosphate is becoming more common practice in certain parts of the world (Brazil, Russia) where igneous phosphate ores are processed. Igneous phosphates are generally finer grained (< 200µm) than some of the traditional sedimentary phosphates (<400µm). Australian phosphate from the Georgina basin is sedimentary, but has a much finer grain size (typically < 106µm) than similar deposits in North Africa and the USA.In 2013, Arianne Phosphate completed a bankable feasibility study for the development of their igneous phosphate deposit at the Lac a Paul site in Quebec. Initially, lab test work and bench scale piloting indicated that using traditional mechanical flotation would be able to produce adequate concentrate grade and an economic level of recovery, but would necessitate the installation of a complex and operationally challenging flotation circuit. Later pilot plant testing using column cells resulted in a significant reduction in process complexity and facilitated the processing of the -20µm ore fraction which resulted in a 10% increase in P2O5 recovery and a 5% increase in concentrate grade %P2O5.Flotation column testing achieved a concentrate grade of 38.6% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery of 90%. Using a mechanical flotation cell circuit, the concentrate grade was 36.4% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of only 78.8%. A noticeable feature of the testing was the simplicity of the column flotation circuit configuration (Rougher + 2 stages of cleaning + Cleaner Scavenger) compared to the mechanical flotation cell circuit (Rougher + Scavenger + 3 stages of cleaning).The financial benefit for this case study was estimated using a sales price of US$ 195/t FOB for a 38.6% P2O5 product, and an assumed cost of production of US$ 95/t, the netback price is calculated at US$100/t. For a daily milling rate of 55,000t/d, the improved flotation performance provides additional concentrate production of 1,203t/d. Using the netback price calculated above, this calculates to additional gross profit of US$ 120,260/d.Annualised, this equals US$ 40.7 million in additional revenue for a similar or reduced CAPEX.The use of column flotation on fine grained phosphate ore types often requires fine grinding and desliming to liberate the phosphate value, such as the Australian sedimentary phosphate ores. Amongst representative men directing alluvial mining of erations in Victoria, some difference of opinion exists as to the best system of working the deep leads. The developmental operations of shaft-sinding, extending a reef drive, partially watering and rising up into the wash dirt are practically the same on all fields but subsequent mining is continued either on the Chiltern and Rulberglen or Ballarat systems, the latter being referred to by the Chiltern and Rutherglen miners as the "down country" system. In the former, the leading wash and cross drives are lept from 300 to 500 feet ahead of the reef drive, and in the latter the reverse method keeping the reef drive well ahead of all wash workingsis adopted.In the majority of alluvial mines in the southern and western fields, the initial work of defining the course of the lead is costly, owing to the thick superincumbent layers of hard basalt, to bore which costs from 9/- to 15/· per foot. Unfortunately large sums of money have been wasted in this work, owing to a want of care and knowledge in the selection of bore sites, and improper recording of the strata pierced, thus handicapping alluvial mining and bringing boring operations...

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addition to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

Downer’s mining division has made an operational and financial commitment to developing engineered solutions that mitigate the risks associated with operator proximity to uncontrolled development drill boom movements, and unguarded rotating drill steels.With the potential for serious injury or fatality, these identified risks are categorised as critical. Previous attempts by the industry to engineer them out have produced limited success, with numerous incidents still occurring year on year. Ultimately, the industry (as a whole) remains reliant on procedural prevention for operator safety.Downer understood the success of such an initiative would largely depend on the effective collaboration between operational experience, technology experts and automation. With so many variables requiring consideration; such as physical operator movement, machine boom movements, variable machine positions, and underground environmental impacts – challenging traditional technologies was necessary to deliver an optimal solution.For that reason, discrete detection (similar to laser curtains or beams) was considered not fit for purpose. The use of situational mapping, using rotating lasers, however, provided the optimal solution. The lasers collect data that is then processed using a custom software application.The software application is specifically programmed for tracking and classifying objects within detection zones, using advanced algorithms and filtering. Recognition and removal of non-positive disturbances are possible without losing personnel detection capability. The detection of relevant classified objects (humans) is determined by analysis of object size, age, movement, and speed etc. When the relevant object is detected, an alarm and inhibit function is applied preventing drilling functions.Any breach of the safety zone (forward of the front jacks) will automatically disable the hydraulic boom function. This can only be reset in the cabin once the person or persons have returned past the front jacks of the development drill into the safety zone.Downer, in collaboration with partner YUMARR Automation, has successfully developed this reliable boom isolation system, and is called JumboGuard. The accuracy and precision of rutile analyses are discussed. Comparison is made between the wet chemical and X-ray fluorescence spectrographic methods of. estimating Ti02 in commercial rutile. Various allotropes of 'I'i02 are identified by diffractometry and a comparative analysis of the coloured varieties of rutile is given. For X-ray fiuorescence . analysis, specimen preparation is critical and sample grinding and pressures. for pellet making are discussed in detail.Cellulose bonded and backed pellets are shown to be subject to relaxation with increasing age.INTRODUCTIONTo date much of the analytical work on commercial samples has been done by wet chemical methods.This led to various discrepancies in results, which are of particular importance when certificates must be issued for overseas shipments. The present work reviews the nature of rutile and compares the results of Ti02 estimation by wet chemical methods and those obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectrographic analysis.In the rutile industry the results from different analysts and even those from the same analyst are not always consistent. To the analytical chemist this should not be surprising.Fairbairn (1951) showed the results obtained from 34 different analysts on a specially prepared sample of granitic rock. It is of some interest to note that the Ti02 content as determined by the 34 analysts using unspecified methods ranged from 0-17 per cent to 0·30 per cent. From modest beginnings in 1996, research into the mineral potential of New ZealandÆs Exclusive Economic Zone has progressed into a major multidisciplinary component of GNSÆs recently funded 6-year æMineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZÆ Programme. In excess of $7.5 M of research funding has been expended, plus $10 M leveraged via collaborations with NIWA (NZ), NOAA (USA), JAMSTEC (Japan), U. Kiel (Germany) and ANU (Australia), whose scientists have contributed hugely to research cruises, as well as subsequent analysis and publication. The 1999 NZAPLUME I cruise was the first research expedition to systematically locate, and chemically characterise, submarine hydrothermal venting associated with arc volcanoes of the southern part the Kermadec intra oceanic arc system. This was followed by the 2002 NZAPLUME II and 2004 NZAPLUME III cruises to the mid- and northern-sections of the Kermadec arc, respectively. Combined, these cruises have surveyed 1300 km of the volcanic chain (from Whakatane to Monowai), including 34 major volcanic centres. Together with concurrent surveys in the Tonga arc, this is now the longest continuous stretch of intra oceanic arc to be surveyed for hydrothermal emissions. Most of the volcanic centres are characterised by simple cones although 30 per cent contain caldera complexes, and compositions range from basalt through to rhyolite. Massive sulphide mineralisation has been recovered from several volcanic centres in the southern Kermadecs (Clark, Rumble II West and Brothers), suggesting the existence of significant Au and base metal bearing deposits along the arc front.

The spatial and temporal evolution from the porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal environment can be assessed by integrating new results on such deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Hedenquist et al, 1998) with past studies of plutonic and porphyry systems (Dilles and Proffett, 1995; Cline, 1995; Shinohara and Hedenquist, 1997; Hedenquist and Richards, 1998). Some time ago, Sillitoe (1973) argued for the nature of the tops and bottoms of porphyry deposits. He concluded that epithermal deposits may form over the tops of some porphyry systems. We can now conclude more confidently what the tops and bottoms of many high-sulphidation ore deposits appeared like while active (Arribas, 1995; Hedenquist, 1995). In addition, we better understand the nature of the zonation of high-sulphidation epithermal systems from the intrusive to surficial environment (Sillitoe, 1999), and how these two styles of ore deposit are related. Geological and geochemical evidence clearly indicates a continuum between these two ore environments. This improved understanding of genesis allows more efficient exploration for these deposits. There are many examples of spatially associated porphyry and epithermal ore deposits. A genetic connection has been suggested by some, and argued against by others. Nowhere is this spatial association better seen than in northern Luzon, Philippines, where the Lepanto high-sulphidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit overlies the Far Southeast (FSE) porphyry Cu-Au resource (Figure 1). Together these mineralised bodies contain a resource of >3.8 M tonnes Cu and >550 tonnes Au. Lepanto was largely mined out in early-1997. Post-war production until 1995 was 0.73 Mt Cu, 115 t Au and 393 t Ag at an average grade of 2.2 per cent Cu, 3.5 g/t Au and 11 g/t Ag. The recent discovery of the adjacent Victoria low-sulphidation quartz-Au-base metal vein deposit, with a resource of >68 tonnes Au (Cuison et al, 1998), illustrates the variety and abundance of mineralisation in the Mankayan district. This district also hosts the Guinaoang porphyry Cu-Au deposit (Sillitoe and Angeles, 1985) and other epithermal vein occurrences (Figure 1). This brief summary reviews the results recently published on the Lepanto-FSE deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Mancano and Campbell, 1995; Claveria, 1998; Hedenquist et al, 1998), and stresses the evidence for coupling of mineralisation between the porphyry and high-sulphidation epithermal environments.

The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by Jillle 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised long wall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

Once the draw process has begun in a block cave, it is very difficult to identify which regions of the cave have successfully propagated, where the caved material is flowing from and where it is flowing to. The uncertainty around cave flow increases as the cave is drawn and can be further compounded by poor draw control practices. These uncertainties make it difficult to plan effective draw strategies to control dilution, as flow model predictions tend to gradually diverge from the actual state of the cave. There have been documented occasions where observed caving phenomena, such as muck pile surface rilling, could not be reproduced with the cave flow models of the time. The ultimate consequence of cave flow uncertainty is generally manifest as higher dilution and lower grades.In order to measure the real-time flow of caved material within an active block cave, CRC Mining and Elexon have developed, together with Rio Tinto, a cave flow monitoring system called Cave Tracker, which is being trialled at Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) in Western Australia. The Cave Tracker system at ADM comprises electronic ‘beacons’ that have been installed down long HQ diameter drill holes located above the extraction level. As the cave-back propagates and the rock mass fragments, beacons are released into the muck pile and flow along with the caved material to the drawpoints below. At Argyle, the beacons are configured to emit a signal every three days. These signals are picked up by detectors installed on the extraction and undercut levels, allowing the positions of the beacons to be determined.By examining the real-time material flow in different regions of the cave, flow mechanisms can be better defined. Draw control strategies can then be actively tailored to manage the current state of the cave. Thus, previously undetectable indications of excessive rilling, rapid cave propagation, cave stall, air gaps and dilution entry can now be identified early and assessed continuously as the cave progresses. Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. The oxidation of iron and nickel sulphide concentrates, and the dominant sulphide minerals which comprise them, has been studied under ignition conditions using thermogravimetry (fG). The concentrates were derived from various minesites and they showed differing tendencies to ignite. Ignition temperatures ranged from 416 to 488°C and the extents of reaction, measured at 500°C, varied from 64 to 88 percent. The reactivity of the least reactivematerial was improved significantly by grinding. Particles <63/lm showed 85 percent oxidation compared with 55 - 65 percent for particles >63/lm.Examination of the individual sulphide minerals revealed that these materials also have significantly different degrees ofreactivity and are subject to particle size effects. For particles <45/lm, the ignition temperatures were as follows:ò pyrite and violarite 380 - 385°C; pentlandite 425 - 430°C; and pyrrhotite 470 - 475°;ò for particles >90 /lm, the ignition values were: pyrite 395 - 400°C;ò violarite 430 - 435°C; pyrrhotite 540 - 545°C; and pentlandite 560 - 565°C.Using the data on the individual minerals it was possible to rationalise the differing degrees of reactivity of the concentrates. The role of the most reactive constituent in initiating the ignition reaction has also been discussed.Finally, the results of this work were found to compare. favourably with the behaviour ofthe concentrates in industrial and pilot-scale flash smelters.

Essential features of the role of the fill material in mechanized cut and fill mining are discussed, with particular emphasis on its dewatering and strength development after emplacement. The fill material is regarded as a chemically-reactive porous medium, the most important property of which is permeability. Methods are described for measurement of permeability and other fill properties and results of such measurements applied to develop an orderly approach to the operation.

A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

There is a lack of information concerning the movements of water on the continental shelf, particularly with regard to data obtained regularly over significant periods of time. The Horace Lamb Centre for Oceanographic Research has recently deployed data acquisition systems on the sea bed off the coast of South Australia to record tides, swell, and ocean temperatures. Some of these early records are described. The swell data are pertinent to future offshore operations with drilling rigs, barges, and other equipment, while the temperature variations give evidence of significant bottom currents, apart from those due to swell.
