IN 1948, the United States used nearly six million barrels of petroleum products every day. Although substitution of synthetic fuels for the natural petroleum product is not here yet, large quantities of special-purpose coal will be required in ever-increasing volume as the domestic production of oil from other sources fails to meet demand and the production of synthetic fuels begins. Petroleum economists do not agree as to when the shortages of domestic oil will appear; but the increasing per capita consumption of oil, coupled with a constantly growing population drawing on a potential domestic oil supply estimated to be 85 billion barrels, sooner or later will result in demand exceeding domestic supply. When this situation comes about, the excess demand will be either eliminated by curtailment of consumption or the demand met by increasing importation of foreign oil or by the production of synthetic fuels. The first recourse would definitely retard the heretofore unbroken rise in American living standards, while dependence upon a foreign oil supply during a war or other emergency would be dangerous. On the other hand, the enormous coal reserves in the United States, plus sizable deposits of oil shale, indicate adequate means of augmenting a diminishing domestic oil supply. Some idea of the impact of an expanding synthetic liquid fuels program on the coal-mining industry may be gathered when it is considered that to supply just half of our present-day petroleum needs synthetically from coal would increase the coal output by about 500 million tons annually, using an 11,900 Btu bituminous coal as the plant feed. If either a subbituminous coal or lignite were used, the quantity required would be materially increased. Synthetic Fuel Processes: The principal synthetic fuel processes using coal as a raw material are the Bergius, or coal-hydrogenation process, and the Fischer-Tropsch, or gas-synthesis process. These two processes not only produce different end products, but the preparation of the coal used in each presents its own individual problem to the coal-preparation engineer. The hydrogenation process brings together a mixture of dry, finely powdered coal, catalyst, and heavy oil to form a paste. Addition of hydrogen under rather high pressure and temperature conditions brings about transformation of the coal to a liquid product, from which a high-grade gasoline and other motor fuels may be obtained. The Fischer-Tropsch process requires the production of synthesis gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. At the Bureau of Mines Louisiana, Mo., demonstration plant, this gas is being made by reacting dried pulverized coal with carefully controlled volumes of oxygen and superheated steam. After purification and in the presence of the proper catalyst and suitable conditions of pressure and temperature, the hydrogen and carbon monoxide components of the synthesis gas react to form motor fuel. For the past 20 years it has been generally accepted that the flotation process is made possible as a result of the action of certain chemical substances on the surface of the mineral particles. In fact, it has been suspected, but never demonstrated, that this action produces on the mineral particles a layer of chemosorbed ions that is of the order of magnitude of a monolayer; that is, of a layer one ion deep. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain initial results on the relationship of mineral surface area and collecting-agent requirements. Up to about eight years ago, all considerations involving the surface area of finely divided solids were limited by the fact that there was not in existence any general method for determining the extent of such surfaces, especially on mixed materials. However, the method invented by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller1 has changed the situation by providing a general procedure (BET method). This procedure has already been applied to mineral dressing problems2-4 and has now received confirmation as to accuracy by an entirely independent method.' This confirmatory or "absolute" method uses a very tedious calorimetric procedure and is not suitable for routine determinations; but still another method6 now is available to relate the results obtained by the BET method to those obtained calorimetrically. This Harkins-Jura method has the advantage that it does not require an assumption concerning the parking area per molecule of adsorbate (nitrogen). In the original work by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller the parking area per nitrogen molecule was calculated to be either 13.8?2 or 16.2?2. according as the nitrogen was assumed to be closely packed as in crystalline nitrogen or loosely packed as in liquid nitrogen. The initial experimental work from this laboratory2 supported the 13.8?2. figure; that work was done on glass spheres of measurable geometric area and it was based on the assumption that the glass spheres were truly smooth; any deviation from this assumption would, of course, have made the calculated parking area higher. Harkins and Jura's results suggest that the parking area is not the same for all substrata; furthermore, the average of the 87 measurements cited indicates a "preferred" parking area for the nitrogen molecule of about 15.2?2., with extreme values at 13.7 and 16.9?2. The average of 21 determinations made in connection with this study7 gave a parking area of 14.3 ± 0.27?². In view of this result and of the Harkins and Jura

The current outlook for financing new copper production is not very encouraging. At a time when companies are slogging through a protracted period of low prices as well as having to accept lower profits due to more stringent tax and royalty schedules, banks are beginning to require companies to take a greater equity interest in new projects. Mineral resource financing, including copper, seems to have lost much of its appeal to the lending institutions, and loans of any kind to many of the developing countries -from which over half of new copper capacity could be expected to come-are being examined much more critically than they were in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

THERE are many who may consider a paper on aerial transport and its possibilities in connection with mining operations somewhat premature. Nevertheless, as there is considerable interest manifested in the subject at the present time and the amount of information available is both scanty and misleading, the result of investigations in some of the remote mining districts of Peru will not only be of interest, but will help crystallize, in the minds of many, a more correct conception of just what an airplane is capable of doing. By way of introduction, I will deal briefly with the types and varieties of airplanes now in use, and the developments of the past few years, pointing out -how the war has encouraged machines. of startling performance rather than those of commercial utility. I will then take up aerial transport in general, showing how airplanes may be employed to advantage and the particular kind of work for which they are best suited. This will cover a preliminary discussion on cost, which is one of the most important phases of the subject. In passing on from a general survey of the situation, I will deal with actual observations and investigations made in Peru. This part of the paper will be divided into two sections: the first, covering the mountainous districts of the Andes (Tamboras, Pataz, Soledad, etc.); the second, the alluvial deposits in the rivers, Chinchipe, Santiago, and Napo. In each case the question of atmospheric conditions, altitude, landing grounds, motors, cost, etc. will be discussed. While it is my intention to deal chiefly with mining in the sections mentioned, the same line of argument will be applicable to any other districts in the world. In conclusion, I will touch on the possibilities of using lighter-than-air craft of the Zeppelin type, followed by a summary of the most salient points brought out in the paper.

Many investigations have been made on the effect of the variables of pressure, sintering temperature and sintering time on the physical and microstructural charactcristics of metal-powder compacts. Severa1 such investigations have indicatcd that pressure is the least important of these three factors in an attempt to secure a dense. strong compact by a simple coltl-pressing and sintering procedure. However, it was felt that a further study of the effect of pressure on pressed and sintered metal powder compacts might prove interesting, for the following reasons: In work done in the past on the effect of pressure, temperature. arid time, the, metal-powder compacts were subjected to long sintering periods, and temperatures right up to the melting point of the metal were applied. It was thought that pressure might exert a more profound effect under short-time simtering and within narrower ranges of temperature. such as normally would be applied in large-scale production of metal-powder parts. 2. It was hoped that something further might be learned of the nature of the bond in pressed and sintered metal-powder compacts. 3. It was thought that interesting infor mation concerning the work-hardening effect of pressure on the crystal structure. of sintered metal-powder compacts would be obtained. Procedure Rectangular bars, 2 by 1/2 by 1/4 in. were molded from the following metal powders: Atomizcd till powder, 325-mesh Atomized aluminum powder, 325-mesh Reduced copper powder, 100-mesh Electrolytic iron powder, 100-mesh Atomized 70-30 brass powder, l00-mesh The, till powder was molded at various pressures up to 40 tolls per sq. in. This was the maximum, because at higher molding pressures there was considerable extrusion of tin into the die wall, jamming the die plungers. The tin specimens were not -in tered, as this phase of the work was- done merely to see how much a very sold metal could be compressed. The aluminum powder was compressed at various pressures up to 50 lons per sq in. Higher pressures could not be used because of extrusion into the die wall The compacts were sintered one hour at 000 in pure dry hydrogen. The copper powder was molded at vari-ous pressures up to 96 tons per sq. in. One set was sintered at 750°C., another at 050 C. for one hour in pure dry hydrogen. The electrolytic iron powder was molded at various pressures up to 00 tons per sq. in. and sintered, one set at Soo°C and one set at 1300°C for one hour in pure dry hydrogen. Extra 325-mesh specimens were also prepared to study the effect of reduced particle size on grain structure. The brass powder was molded at various pressures up to 96 tolls per sq. in. and silltered for one hour. one set at 65o°C. and one set at 800°C, in pure dry hydrogeu.

A simple and inexpensive mercury-tracer method has been develohed to study rates and Patterns of gas flow in blast furnaces. A Pulse of mercury is injected into the hot blast, and its arrival at the sampling Point is recorded by an electronic circuit that measures resonant absorbtion of ultraviolet light by mercury vapor in the gas aspirated .through the detecting. cell. A rapidly developing interest in blast-furnace technology in recent years has created a strong demand for precise knowledge of the rates and patterns of gas movement through the stock column. Classical fluid-flow theory cannot supply the desired information because the complexity of the blast-furnace situation precludes the accurate determination of many of the parameters required for solution of the equations. In fact some of the terms employed in fluid-flow treatments become almost meaningless under blast-furnace conditions. The void fraction of the stock column, for example, varies widely from place to place and is affected by the segregation of charge materials, attrition of lumps during descent, and channeling. Gas density varies with changes in local pressure, temperature, and composition, while viscosity varies with temperature and composition. Even if mean values for these functions were acceptable, they would be either impossible or extremely difficult to determine with a high degree of accuracy since the value of the mean for all gas properties would depend upon the flow distribution itself. Attempts to study gas movement by the pitot-tube determination of kinetic pressures have met with little acceptance. Reproducibility of results is extremely difficult to achieve in a situation where alignment of the tube orifice with respect to the flow direction in tortuous channels cannot be guaranteed. Because of these difficulties it would appear that progress can be achieved only with a direct method of measuring gas velocities and determining the shape of flow paths through the stock. The establishment of such a method is described in this paper. SELECTION OF METHOD Direct measurement suggests the use of a tracer by means of which the progress of a "parcel" of gas can be followed through the furnace. Several requirements must be met before any selected material can be considered a suitable tracer. First of all, it must be a substance not normally present in blastfurnace gas or dust; otherwise its presence in a gas sample will have little significance. It should be volatile at temperatures normally existing within the furnace, to ensure that it will travel with the gas, as a gas. It should possess special properties enabling its presence in the gas to be detected readily, and it should not undergo exchange reactions with any material normally present within the furnace, including refractories and coke as well as all components of the metal and slag. Radioactive materials naturally are considered because their radioactivity renders them susceptible to detection. However, of the many radioactive materials available, almost all are eliminated from final consideration by their unsuitability in terms of other properties. Radioactive silicon, carbon, calcium, phosphorus, and many others have been considered and discarded, either because they are not volatile over the whole range of significant temperatures, or because they could be expected to undergo exchange reactions with burden or refractory materials. Others which might be suitable in terms of these properties are eliminated because of a low activity, short half life, or the necessity for fragile counting apparatus. Of the many elements available in radioactive form, perhaps radon is the only one suitable for blast-furnace gas-flow studies. This has been used in several investigations1-4 with considerable success. The use of radiotracers has certain inherent disadvantages. One is the cost. An appreciable sum must be allowed for materials each time a test is made. Also, special methods of handling must be employed, and very often the progress of an investigation must be governed by the availability of isotopes and the delivery arrangements that can be made for them. INTRODUCTION Union Carbide is currently operating an in-situ leach project on the Palangana Dome area in Duval county. This deposit meets all the requirements for in-situ leach in that the ore (1) is below the water table, (2) is in a permeable horizon, (3) is amenable to chemical leaching, and (4) is confined by impervious layers. This project has been under commercial production since 1976, and its capacity has been expanded on three occasions since going on-stream. Recently, additional uranium reserves were discovered on the Rogers-Cardenas (R-C) property about 32 km north of the Palangana operation. The ore is located within the Oakville sands and its characteristics are quite similar to those of the ore at Palangana. Both are an unconsolidated Arkosic sand high in clay and calcium carbonate. The R-C ore, however, is somewhat coarser with a mean particle size of 0.15 mm as compared to a mean particle size of 0.07 mm for the Palangana ore. In all respects it would appear that this ore would be a candidate for in-situ leach as a satellite operation to Palangana. Unfortunately, R-C ore is above the water table and, therefore, not amenable to the Palangana practice. Because of the limited known reserves in this deposit, it is readily apparent that conventional mining and milling are out of the question. However, because of its proximity to our Palangana operation, it seemed worthwhile to consider other options. The most viable route based on our past experience was to heap leach the ore. Our recent success at our Gas Hills facility and our Maybell operation, in employing a heap leach practice to our marginal reserves seemed to be a logical approach for processing this ore. Our experiences at both locations are described in "Heap Leaching - A Case History" by R. G. Woolery et al., Mining Engineering, March 1978. In both instances the process is an acid leach circuit and acid consumption averages 20 kg/t H2SO4. A preliminary feasibility study showed that because of the high strip ratio required for the R-C project to be successful, additional ore reserves must be located and that a method of heap leaching with an alkaline circuit would have to be developed. As a result of this paper study, the decision was made to proceed with a program of additional exploration drilling to determine the total ore reserves that could be mined economically. The Mining Department will evaluate each ore zone for cutoff grade, strip ratio, and expected mining cost. At the same time, a laboratory program to evaluate the available core samples for amenability to heap leaching with respect to an estimate of uranium recovery and processing costs was developed. This program is currently in progress, and at this time, we are just completing our process amenability study. BENCH-SCALE EVALUATION OF THE R-C ORE The initial bench-scale slurry leach tests on the R-C ore showed an acid consumption in excess of 200 kg/t H2SO4. These data, of course, discouraged us from considering this process route. Not only would the acid cost be prohibitive, but the gypsum generated by the reaction of the sulfuric acid with the calcium carbonate of the ore would severely effect the percolation of the lixivant. For this reason, the laboratory program was directed toward an alkaline circuit compatible with heap leaching. Because of the proximity of the R-C property to our Palangana operation, it seemed advisable to integrate the processing of this ore into the production at Palangana. Doing so would enable us to bring the R-C property into production by merely enlarging our present facilities at Palangana; otherwise, construction of a grass roots plant would be necessary. Ideally, the simplest method would be to construct the heaps at Palangana and employ an ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate leachant compatible with the in-situ production liquor. The product liquors could then be co-mingled or processed separately as desired. To determine if this goal was practical, samples of the R-C ore were obtained, and a laboratory program initiated. Heap leach amenability testing consisted of preliminary bench-scale evaluation to determine optimum solution strength and ultimate uranium recovery, followed by small column tests to confirm the bench-scale metallurgy and to determine percolation characteristics. These bench-scale tests are being followed by pilot-scale testing approximating field conditions. As expected, the bench-scale tests showed that the dissolution rate is considerably slower for alkaline leach than has been our experience in acid leaching. Because of the slower reaction rates, product liquor grades will be lower than for acid, as greater volumes of solution are required for satisfactory uranium extractions. The greatest influence on reaction times found in the laboratory was the carbonate/bicarbonate strength and oxidant addition. However, the higher salt concentration reduced the efficiency of the IX resin circuit and about 25g/L salt proved to an upper limit compatible with subsequent IX treatment. The oxidant contributed significantly to the early extraction rate but seemed to have only minimal effect on the total practical U308 extracted or the time required to achieve it. This variable will require larger scale testing to determine if the added cost of the oxidant is actually justifiable. Thus, the small-scale laboratory slurry tests, based on the 0.088% U308 sample available, indicate that leaching at 25g/L ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate, with or without oxidant, we might expect an 80-85% U308 extraction on this ore.

RESULTS of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., have been discussed by the writer in several recent papers. 1.2.3.1 In those papers references were also given to the work of Haigh in 1917.6 Efforts by the writer to obtain a better understanding of some of the factors involved in corrosion-fatigue finally developed into a general investigation of the effect of time and cyclic stress on corrosion of metals. Corrosion fatigue of Metals As described in the papers mentioned, rotating-cantilever specimens, conically tapered so that the stress is nearly uniform over a length of about 1.5 in., were subjected to simultaneous fatigue and corrosion. For this purpose a stream of water was diagonally applied so as to sweep the specimen from the outer to the inner fillet and surround the stressed surface with water. The fresh water is a calcium carbonate water, the composition of which has been given in a previous paper .2 The salt water is Severn River water having a saline content about one-third that of sea water. The previous papers described results obtained with ferrous and nonferrous metals. INTRODUCTION. IT is unnecessary to repeat here the contents of many valuable contributions to this subject which have appeared in the Transactions and in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. As a basis for the further suggestions of this paper, the following are the most important: 1. The investigation of J. R. Don,1 showing the gold of certain Australasian veins to have been deposited by ascending solutions, and not by lateral secretion. 2. The theory of Prof. Posepny,2 distinguishing the vadose from the deep circulation, and ascribing the origin of certain classes of ore-deposits to ascending solutions of the latter class. 3. The theory of Prof. Van Hise,3 as to the underground circulation and the primary enrichment of veins thereby. 4. The paper of Prof. J. F. Kemp,4 showing that ore-deposits are largely the products of " expiring vulcanism." Many of Prof. Kemp's, ideas have been widely adopted by mining men. 5. The theory of secondary enrichment, so lucidly expounded by Mr. S. F. Emmons.5 This theory, dealing with, the rearrangement of ore-bodies after primary mineralization, has been generally adopted, and seems to me to have been as completely proved as the nature of the case permits. The purpose of this writing is to make available additional data, not previously published, on the zeta potential at various pH values of chrysocolla from the Inspiration mine, Arizona. Much research has been performed on chrysocolla, its physical properties, and its flotation, the results of which have not yielded a commercially acceptable flotation process for its recovery. The present data were collected and are presented to further advance chrysocolla research. Experimental For this investigation a carefully prepared sample of chrysocolla was used. This sample was obtained by crushing specimens from the Inspiration mine and picking out by hand the solid blue particles at -3+8 mesh, by grinding these to 10 mesh and repicking the +28 mesh sizes, by cleaning this product using magnetic separation, and by grinding and screening the material into fractions for final magnetic treatment on a Frantz Isodynamic Separator. DURING a recent investigation of high-purity aluminum,' evidence was found for grain-boundary sliding and migration at room temperature. The investigation was concerned primarily with an electron-microscopic study of a fine (approximately 1 micron) network that appeared on the surface of chemically polished aluminum. The nature of the network will not be discussed since it serves only as markers showing relative displacements in this instance. The pertinent observation, shown in Fig. 1, was made on a flat tensile specimen which had been strained about 8 pct at room temperature. As can be seen in this electron micrograph, a grain boundary has undergone a certain amount of sliding. The reason for the existence of the two differently appearing networks is given in the foregoing reference. For present purposes, however, the transition region can be disregarded. A close study of this picture reveals that in addi- tion to sliding there is a narrow band adjacent to and above the grain boundary. Fig. 2 is a schematic drawing showing the essential features of this band.

A. J. SHALER* and H. UDIN*— Bonding, and the increase in contact area, form two of the series of phenomena collectively known as 'sintering.' A third one of these is involved in changes in dimensions of the whole compact. Dr. Kuczynski's Fig 1, in which the center of the sphere does not approach the surface of the plate, shows that he is not concerned with the last of these phenomena. On the other hand, Frenkel's work is exclusively concerned with changes in dimensions. Dr. Kuczynski's rather unfortunate remarks about Frenkel's work are therefore beside the point. The work of Wulff and myself, quoted by the author, has also been primarily concerned with what we call the 'second stage of sintering,' in which such systems as may be represented by Kuczynski's model of a sphere and a block are no longer in existence. The work of Pines also falls in this category. Neither does Dr. Kuczynski's very masterful experimental work represent a solution to the problem of bonding. It does not seek to answer the question of why particles approach one another and form a weld in the first place. Such a study clearly reveals that the area of contact is initially rapidly deformed by direct mechanical flow caused by the same force of attraction. This initial deformation is neglected here. On the other hand, students of the phenomena of sintering must not underestimate the very important contribution that Dr. Kuczynski does make in this paper. It is a well-worked out study of the mechanism of 'spheroidization' of the voids, the first manifestation of which, during sintering, is the growth of the areas of contact, with no change in the dimensions of the compact. This study is very valuable as a basis for predicting the development of the strength of such compacts as filters and certain porous bearings, in which the second stage of sintering is never reached. Exploration work in 1932 in the Rocky Mountain region, which includes the states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, resulted in the discovery of one new oil field, Cut Bank in Glacier County, Montana; one new gas field, Craig in Moffat County, Colorado; and the definite outlining of a second gas field, Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, in which there had been drilled but one small gas well prior to 1932. During the year, 95 producing oil or gas wells were completed, giving new initial production amounting to 188,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 176,420 bbl. of oil per day for the region. By far the largest part of this new production of both oil and gas was developed in southeastern New Mexico, mainly the Hobbs field. However, the Dry Creek field of Carbon County, Montana, contributed over 5000 bbl. of; new oil production. Sixty-two wells were abandoned during the year but of this number only 10 promising structures were nonproductive. The remaining 52 wells had little to recommend their drilling from a structural or strati-graphical standpoint. Eighty-eight wells were suspended in the region' during 1932 before the tests had reached their individual objective horizons. Many of these suspensions were due to financial difficulties and it is possible that several of the operations may be resumed at a later date. At the close of the year, 54 wells were actively drilling, 54 were shut down and there were 20 rigs and locations in the five Rocky Mountain states. It is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. 'These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice. Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.l This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the Liplanes of weaknessv resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 dsed stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot.
