A series of gas-lift tests was made which verified conclusions reached from previous studies and which showed that gas-lift performance could be calculated if reasonably accurate data on the producing characteristics of the well are available.' The test installation is described. Its essential features consisted of a rate-of-flow controller to regulate the input gas and an auxiliary string of small diameter tubing to conduct the input gas to the point of injection in the eductor tubing. In general, it was shown that for continuous gas-lift operation, injection should be as deep as possible consistent with available gas pressure and rate of production desired. Calculated curves are presented which completely characterize the gas-lift performance of the well tested. INTRODUCTION A correlation based on field data from a large number of flowing and gas-lift wells, covering a wide range of oper- ating conditions, was developed which permitted the logical design and prediction of the performance of continuous gaslift installations.' The procedure made it possible to calculate the depth, pressure, rate at which to inject gas, horsepower requirements, and the effect of production rate and tubing size on these quantities. As a result of these calculations certain significant facts were brought to light or re-emphasized. The presence of efficient ranges of operation and an optimum injection depth for a given rate of production were shown to exist as well as the fact that the lower the tubing pressure the less the horsepower requirements to lift the reservoir fluids. The fact that the gas lift performance can be predicted by calculation does not mean that any given installation will perform over the entire range predicted. Many of the conventional continuous gas-lift installations will not permit operation over the entire range predicted by calculation (particularly in the efficient range of operation) because of the performance characteristics of the installation. Consequently, field tests were initiated for the purpose of investigating and arriving at a simple continuous gas-lift installation which would operate under all conditions predicted by calculation. The first series of tests involved the use of mechanically operated valves. These valves were slip-joint type valves which are opened and closed by lowering or raising the tubing at the surface by means of a hydraulic jack. These valves were chosen because it was hoped that they could be opened or closed at will and did not depend on the gas pressure in the annulus or the pressure of the fluid in the tubing for their operation. Unfortunately, the valves did not operate satisfactorily and it was imossible to open or close each valve at will. Some limited data were obtained, however, which verified the predicted benefits resulting from the use of lower tubing pressures. In the next series of tests the valves were removed and the gas was injected from the annulus through a 14/64-in. orifice equipped with a reverse check valve. A packer was set below the valve to seal off the space between the 2-in. tubing and 5-in. casing. The injection point was located at 3,810 ft. This arrangement provided satisfactory mechanical operation. However, it was impossible to obtain low rates of liquid production at low tubing pressures as predicted by calculation. The cost of maintaining the production of an operating oil company is one of the most important, as well as one of the most difficult to estimate, of the various items which go to make up the total cost of producing oil. In the opinion of many operators the cost of drilling and developing new wells, whose, production takes the place of the loss in production through decreased yield of the old wells, is considered an operating expense, for the reason that the total income-producing power of the property is not increased. The cost of these new wells may be added directly to production expense, or it may be charged to capital account, and this account depreciated to the same extent. In either case, after an oil company is on a satisfactory income-producing basis, the money for drilling new wells to maintain production must be taken from the income of the company. Three factors determine the cost of maintaining production: First, the rate of decline in yield of the wells; second, the cost of drilling and equipping new wells in terms of their production; third, the decrease in initial production of new wells as the property is drilled and gas pressure taken off the sands, etc. In order to check theoretical figures for the cost of maintaining production the writer, with the assistance of Reed Bush and Fred Tough, has compiled the following figures. It is necessary first of all to choose a' period of time during which production for the field or territory studied remains fairly constant. The longer the period of time over which this condition prevails, the better. It is also necessary to eliminate or allow for any extraneous condition which may have affected the production returns, such as the shutting down of a large number of wells, the bringing in of a well of exceptionally large yield, the opening up of virgin territory where the flush yield is greater than will be had from new wells in after years, etc. All these conditions are exemplified most simply in the case of the Coalinga field, and perhaps these figures are more truly prophetic than the two other cases given. The effect of multiple an transformations on diffusion in a dilute iron alloy was studied. Inter-penetration between iron and an Fe-Co alloy was evaluated, under thermal-cycling conditions chosen so as to transform only the iron-rich side of the diffusion couple. It is shown that a small but consistent diffusion enhancement by a factor of two results when data from the transforming side of thermally cycled specimens are compared with predicted inter diffusion coefficients based on isothermal data. No enhancement is found when data from the mntransforming side of such couples are compared with predicted diffusivities. It is suggested that short-circuiting by moving pain boundaries is the most likely mechanism contributing to the observed diffusion enhancement from multiple phase transJormations in iron. Transformation-induced Point defects, dislocation-pifie short-circuiting, and point defects generated by dislocation motion are less effective in contributing to enhanced diffusion under the experimental conditions utilized. This paper constitutes a preliminary report on experimental work done to date on the anode-furnace treatment of blister copper containing relatively high percentages of nickel. The investigation has not been completed but results obtained to date are considered of sufficient interest to warrant publication. Blister copper treated by the Ontario Refining Co. originates from the Copper Cliff smelter of The International Nickel Company of Canada, of which the former is a wholly-owned subsidiary. The blister as received contains from 0.50 to 1.50 per cent Ni, and in this respect differs from that treated by other refineries on this continent. During the anode-furnace treatment, only a portion of the nickel content is removed, and of the amount remaining in the anodes a varying percentage is found in the anode slimes. This necessitates a more extensive treatment than ordinary nickel-free material. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat roasting and leaching operations several times before the nickel content is low enough to permit the slimes to proceed to the dore furnace. This, besides increasing treatment charges, causes greater selenium stack losses and involves a longer tie-up of precious-metal values. Therefore this investigation was undertaken with the aim of determining the factors influencing the diversion of nickel into the anode sludge. From experience it was known that by keeping the nickel content of anodes at 0.55 to 0.60 per cent maximum a relatively satisfactory slime resulted. One avenue of attack therefork was developing improved elimination in the anode-furnace treatment so that the anode content mentioned above was not exceeded. Another angle was to improve the solubility, during electrolysis, of the nickel constituent in the anodes, thus decreasing the percentage diverted to slimes. It may be mentioned here that nickel dissolving electrochemically and entering the electolyte presents no difficulty from a treatment standpoint. Both of these approaches were studied and are discussed separately below.

A. J. Goldak and J. Gordon Parr University of Alberta) —Margolin and Ence's paper reached us only a few days after we had submitted a paper on the structure of Ti2Cu to the AIME. Here, however, we only wish to point out an error in the paper (page 321): "Karlsson has reported the crystal structure of the first intermediate phase occurring in the Ti-rich portion of the Ti-Cu system to be face-centered tetragonal." Karlsson actually reported the structure of Ti3Cu (i.e., "the first intermediate phase") to be primitive tetragonal with four atoms per lattice point: Cu at 0, 0, 0; and Ti at 1/2, 1/2, 0; 0, 1/2, 1/2; and 1/2, 0, 1/2. Thus, Karlsson suggests a primitive lattice with an ordered arrangement of atoms located at corners and face-centers: Ence and Margolin suggest a random body-centered tetragonal structure—-with which our results agree. E. Ence and H. Margolin (azlt1zo.l-s' reply)— We do not agree that Karlsson has not reported the structure of Ti3Cu as face-centered tetragonal. The fact that Cu atoms are located at the corners and titanium at the face-centers does not indicate that the lattice is not face-centered. We are pleased that the discussers' results agree with our own.

The fertilizer industry is a meeting place of mining, manufacturing and agriculture. It is an industry of dynamic change, huge tonnages, and great aggregate value. In the United States from 5,000,000 to 8,000,000 tons of fertilizer are made and used per year, with a value at the works of from $200,000,000 to $300,000,000. The world uses about 50,000,000 tons yearly with an aggregate value between two-thirds and one billion dollars. This world output contains of the essential plant-food constituents, nitrogen, phosphate, and potash, approximately 8,000,000 tons. The corresponding United States quantity, as nearly as can be estimated, is 1,400,000 tons of plant food per year in the aggregate tonnage of fertilizer. With the steady increase in the practice of scientific agriculture throughout the world there has been a corresponding growth in the consumption of fertilizers. In the United States there has, indeed, been but a small upward trend in the tonnage sold, measured in millions of tons of all classes of goods which are made and marketed. The real growth has come through the increasing concentration of the essential plant foods in the mixture. Thus it is estimated that between 1920 and 1930, although there was little increase in tonnage of fertilizer, there was an increase of fully 30 per cent in the content of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash. The chemical and physical propertties of slag systems are of special interest to metallurgists, for nearly all metals are in contact with molten slags during the primary reduction from their ores and then during the subsequent refining and alloying processes that determine their ultimate use. These processes are carried out at high temperatures and involve such complex chemical systems that funda-mental scientific knowledge of the Properties and behavior of these slags is inadequate. Various hypotheses have been Proposed to explain known slag characteristics. The commonest of these regard the molten slag as constituted of compounds that are dissociated in varying degrees into their constituent oxides, as illustrated by Schenckl and the recent Papers of Chipman and co-authors. Another proposal is that these compounds dissociate by com-plete6 or partial ionization, the evidence for which has been reviewed by Martin and Derge.? whatever hypothesis is favored, the exact formulation of these compounds is incomplete. It is based on three principal types of information: 1. Studies of solidified 51% samples by X ray diffraction, petrography, and similar methods that can be used at room temperature. The correlation of this information with the high-temperature properties of the molten slag is uncertain. 2. Studies of slag-metal equilibria, which have the advantage of providing observations on the molten slag at high temperature. However, even these data present problems of interpretation because they require a complete knowledge of the metal phase. 3. Direct measurements of properties of molten slag at the temperature of greatest metallurgical interest. Viscosity, electrical conductivity, specific heats, and similar properties have been measured, but the data of this type are widely scattered and frequently difficult to interpret. Additional direct measurements of properties of molten slag that can be interpreted in terms of chemical behavior are required, and this paper shows that the standard physical-chemical measurement of reversible electrode potentials, which measure the activity of specific constituents, is a fruitful source of such information. The purpose of this investigation, therefore, was to find an electrode combination that would yield reversible electromotive force measurements when dipped into the molten slag to be studied. IT has been discovered by skilled bell founders, more through experience than from geometrical calculation (although calculation does enter), that a certain relationship of dimensions in both large and small bells makes the tone and the weight almost certainly what is desired. This is in addition to the customary shape which is, according to the historians, perhaps that found by the first discoverers of bells. Among themselves bell founders have made a rule of these measurements and have called it the bell scale. Beginning with the small ones weighing ten pounds, it increases by degrees to a point where, as I have seen, they are able to make them even twenty-five and thirty thousand pounds. This scale is of great enlightenment if one does not have a bell already made for comparison.

AN unusual thermal etch figure in copper is described and an explanation in terms of twinning is suggested. A flat polycrystalline specimen of OFHC copper cut from a rolled sheet was electro-polished in orthophosphoric acid and annealed at 950°C in a vacuum of approximately 10-3 mm Hg for 2 hr. The specimen was found to be thermally etched, the markings on the surface being consistent with the assumption that they were the traces of the (111) planes which are developed preferentially because they have the lowest free energy. However, on one grain (the grain shown in Fig. 1) the traces formed an almost regular pentagon and at first sight it seemed unlikely that they could all be (111) traces. These traces were studied further because it was thought that they might be a type of growth spiral. A fringe pattern showed that this was not so, the grain being sensibly flat and the only features having steps were the striations and the faint curved line passing out from the center of the pentagons. To obtain some additional information, the specimen was deformed in tension. The effect of the stress was first to cause the appearance of lines running from the centers to the apexes of the pentagons and then to tilt the five segments so formed. At a much greater stress, appreciable slip appeared on the grain; these effects can be seen in Fig. 2. The micrograph was taken at a fairly late stage in the deformation and the tilting is quite marked. The magnification is the same as in Fig. 1, and although some slip can be seen it could be observed better by varying the illumination and using higher magnifications. In each segment of the grain, slip (which takes place on the (111) planes) was parallel to the side of the pentagon in that segment. The marked changes in direction of slip from segment to segment seemed to be incompatible with the presence of a regular array of subgrains. These results suggest that some of the five segments were twins. If this is so, since the twinning plane in copper is the (111) plane, the radial lines must be traces of the (111) planes on the surface. From the symmetry of the striations about the radial lines, these planes must be almost perpendicular to the surface. The angle between <III>directions in face-centered-cubic copper is 70&apos;32&apos;. If, in Fig. 3, OAB (triangle 1) is taken as matrix and OA, OB are (111) planes viewed edge on, then AB is in the correct direction to be the trace of either of the other two (111) planes on the surface. If triangle 2 is the twin (about the (111) plane perpendicular to the surface and containing OB) of triangle 1, then once again it can be shown that all lines are traces of (111) planes. Similarly, triangle 3 is the twin of triangle 2, 4 of 3, and 5 of both 4 and 1. (The sequence is, of course, quite arbitrary.) However, if this were the case there would be a discrepancy of 7&apos;20&apos; to be accounted for. It is suggested that the faint curved line passing outward from the center of the pentagon represents either a low angle boundary or a sixth small twin. The slight step shown by the fringes at this line might be an indication that the former is the case. This explanation does not account for the coincidence of obtaining a grain whose surface must be so close to (110) and obtaining the curious twinning described previously; it would be of interest to find a specific mechanism for this.

E. M. BROHL. It seems as though the physicists in this crowd in the case of the cartridge cases have been a little in advance of the chemists in the crowd. What I am curious about here, and the way this appears to me, without too much study, is that in season cracking we get an atomic distortion so that both by sound means and by magnetic means we are finding a reluctance of the atomic planetary system to line up in accordance with the so-called good metal. The point that is brought up, or rather that has not been brought up-and I think perhaps we could think of that from the chemical point of view-is that this season cracking as I am used to the stress-corrosion cracking, appears to act much as though it were copper oxide. You remember when YOU take copper oxide films in which we again use this distortion of the atomic system to allow currents to pass selectively in one direction only, we get results almost identical with what we saw on the oscillograph report. In other words, on the one section of this season cracking we had a trace of one phase and if you notice on the sections three and four of the numbered oscillograph trace we had what appears 180 deg. out of phase.

RICE, Pittsburgh, Pa.-I think it is very wise to point out the greater liability to explosions in certain parts of the year, if there be such difference, with the caution, however, that vigilance be not relaxed at other times. In comparing the figures for the United States with those of Europe, I think we should separate them as far as possible according to cause of origin and means of propagation. That is to say, it would appear to me that the majority of our explosions are due more directly to the ignition of coal dust directly from the flame of explosives, whereas, judging from my inquiries and observations in some of the mines of Europe, the majority of their explosions have been caused by the ignition of fire damp. Now, in the case of fire damp, I do not think that anybody has yet attempted or has been able to find any connection between the seasons and the issuance of methane into mines. One thing must be borne in mind, that if you get a strong explosion of fire damp, dust of a character that might not ignite readily by itself might assist in the extension of an explosion of fire damp through a considerable area in the mine, if not throughout the mine. While it is true we have many lesser explosions in this country attributable to fire damp, it would appear that the majority of all the mine explosions of the country, in considering the means of propagation beyond the locality of the origin, are due to coal dust; and it is the liability to coal-dust explosions that appears to be affected by seasonal changes. Hence the desirability of separating statistically (if it could be done by the inspectors) fire-damp explosions from coal-dust explosions, in order to obtain the true value of the seasonal effect. Nevertheless, in spite of the inclusion of fire-damp explosions with coal-dust explosions, the preponderance of the evidence, as indicated in Mr. Eavenson&apos;s figures for American mines, has shown that&apos; in this country there were more explosions in the winter and spring months, when the mines are drier; that is, when the mines are apt to be drier. Whereas, according to the European figures that he has gathered, it seems to be very clearly demonstrated that in France, England, and Belgium, the time when explosions occur has no connection with any particular season. That, I think, is partly due to the point just mentioned, that a majority of their explosions have originated from fire damp. The European mining men have been more careful, generally speaking, with the use of explosives than we have, so that the cause of ignition from that source has been less. THE Western phosphate field, virtually ignored for 40 years, has been undergoing a rapid climb to economic importance. Until World War II there seemed to be no reason for developing the phosphate rock region of the Intermountain Empire. But the tremendously increased demand for food production and the needs of many branches of the chemical industry changed all that. Quite suddenly a report made by the U. S. Geological Survey at the turn of the century became important. The survey showed that 60 pet of the nation&apos;s phosphate reserves were in the western phosphate field. Simplot Fertilizer Co. was one of the first to become actively interested in the development of the area. In August, 1945 the company began exploration of the Phosphoria Formation on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The result was the Gay Mine, about 18 miles east of Indian Agency Headquarters at Fort Hall, Idaho, developed to supply high grade phosphate rock for processing into superphosphate fertilizer at the company&apos;s Pocatello plant. Six ft of high grade oolitic phosphate rock (ranging from 32.5 to 34.5 pet P2O5) were discovered at the base of the Phosphoria Formation by diamond drilling and dozer trenching. High quality and thickness, plus the fact that the formation lay flat and near the surface made strip and open pit mining possible. In one year of mining, starting June 1946, a total of 53,000 tons of main bed oolitic phosphate rock was hauled to Pocatello for processing into supersulphate. The first year&apos;s operation was in

A study including effects of 7) pH value, 2) fatty acid collector, 3) fuel oil, 4) interfering ion, 5) particle size, and 6) operational variables. Test results indicate feasibility of fatty acid flotation under certain restrictive conditions. FATTY acids have been used as standard collectors for floating the matrix1-8 but not the leached zone phosphate ores. After a series of investigations, Davenport9 and Tarbutton10 concluded that the Florida leached zone ores tested were unamenable to fatty acid flotation and must be upgraded by floating the siliceous gangue with Armac-T as collector. The cationic flotation was estimated11 to cost almost ten times as much as a fatty acid process that would ideally give the same flotation grades and recoveries of phosphates. Mineralization: Extensive deposits of leached zone aluminiferous phosphate occur in Florida."= The ore sample used for this work was obtained from the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., Clear Springs area, Florida. The ore is a potential source of uranium and aluminum as well as phosphorus. Since the uranium and the recoverable aluminum are contained in some of the phosphate minerals, an upgrading of phosphate results in a corresponding enrichment of both uranium and aluminum. The phosphate minerals in the ore are primarily pseudo-wavellite, millisite, and carbonate fluorapatite, with a minor amount of wavellite. Quartz and clay are the common gangue minerals, quartz being predominant. Others present in small amounts are ilmenite, hydrated iron oxides, staurolite, monazite, and zircon. Experimental Procedures: After being dried to less than 1 pct surface moisture the material was dry-ground in a Hardinge conical ball mill to —6 mesh. The ground product was classified into 6/20, 20/200, and —200 mesh size fractions. On the basis of Table I, the coarse and fine size fractions were considered as phosphate concentrates, because of their high phosphorus contents. In contrast, the 20/200 mesh fraction, which was low in phosphorus, was used as the flotation feed. All the flotation tests, unless otherwise stated, were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine under the following conditions: 1) 400 g of solid feed for each test, 2) 2000 rpm impeller speed, 3) 8.9 pH and 4-min conditioning, and 4) 3-min flotation. The procedure used for the quantitative bubble pick-up tests has been described previously.18

Canada) - The authors have introduced a subject, the intensive study of which has awaited scientific developments. These are now such as to justify a thorough review of our thinking on the causes and control of rockbursts. The formulae developed in the paper, the comparison between rockbursts and earthquakes in figure 1 and the energy data relating to explosives serve as an effective foundation. In the paper this writer is quoted as suggesting that energy of the order of 10 x 10 11 ft. lb. may have been released in some of the heaviest rockbursts in the Kolar Gold Field. He now hastens to add that such an estimate has no scientific validity. It arises only from a casual comparison of surface and underground effects of the medium heavy bursts, referred to in the paper and estimated by Jones at 3.0 x 1010 ft.lbs., with those of obviously greater magnitude. In any case, we have the estimate by Jones above, that by a team of seismologists 1 on the Witwatersrand of 10 x 1010 ft.lbs., that by Coates of 3.8 x 10" ft.lbs., also referred to in the paper, that by Blan-chard2 for the catastrophic rockburst at Springhill, N.S., of only 7.4 X 107 ft. lbs., and finally the range covered by Cook, referred to in the paper. It is probable also that data for the heavy rockburst at Merkers3 in the WERRA potash area of Germany are available as it was recorded on seismographs from Moscow to Spain. It is the writer&apos;s impression that some standardization is present in the estimates above for 10 x 10 10, 3.8 x 1010 and 7.4 x 107 ft.lbs., respectively. The latter, for Springhill, represents a relatively low order of magnitude. It is obvious that any energy estimate must be related to the local geometry of openings at the time of the event. It is also obvious that any explanation of the causes of rockburst must be capable of providing a wide range of energy. However, we must remember that the energy release is an effect indicating magnitude. The cause lies with the mechanism initiating the primary failure, generating the seismic activity, to which much of the damage is probably due.

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the forecast capability of the econometric model of the cobalt industry1/ as utilized by the Federal Preparedness Agency. Forecasts from this model are illustrated from the premise that the leading producer continues production of cobalt. An alternate forecast is presented where the model structure is altered to reflect the condition where the leading producer leaves the market. All estimations and forecasts presented here are shown for illustrative purposes. The cobalt industry is highly concentrated; one company, owned by the Zaire government, accounts for approximately three-fifths of world production. The cobalt supply outside of Zaire is determined by the level of activity of copper or nickel markets, as cobalt is mined as a by-product of copper or nickel. The demand for cobalt reflects a diversified usage pattern; cobalt is used mainly in heat and corrosion-resistant materials, high- strength materials and permanent magnets. According to 1974 U.S. consumption data superalloys accounted for 22%, magnetic alloys 18%, cutting and wear-resistant materials 13%, and catalyst 7%. Foreign consumption is probably similar in terms of usage categories, but the relative order of the categories is in variance.2/ The Cobalt Model The cobalt model&apos;s object is to explain consumption, supply and price movements by utilizing statistically estimated equations. Central to the econometric model is the role of Zaire as the profit-maximizing "dominant firm". Zaire sets the price that is most profitable for itself. The area for which oil and gas development is reported for 1938 in this paper is larger than that covered by the report for 1937, in that besides Duval, Jim Hogg, McMullen, Starr, Webb and Zapata Counties, comprising the Laredo district, this paper also includes the South Corpus Christi district, which is composed of the following counties: San Patricio, Nueces, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Kenedy, Brooks, Willacy, Hidalgo and Cameron, all heretofore included in A.I.M.E. Gulf Coast reports. In the map, Fig. 1, the area known as South Texas is represented by the counties south of the heavy black line. Production in the South Corpus Christi district, which covers an area that extends inland for 50 miles and follows the coast line, is primarily in zones ranging from the Catahoula, through the Frio sands, into the Vicksburg horizon. General exploration is done mainly with geophysics because in this district production is directly dependent upon structural conditions. In the Laredo district most of the production is from sand lenses; therefore, because these shallow sand lenses represent old shore lines which are monoclinic in character, the most satisfactory method of exploration in the Laredo district is drilling. This type of production centers around Duval County and follows a northeast-southwest trend along the Mirando district. Although drilling operations showed a decline from the preceding year, 1938 was highly successful as far as new discoveries and developments were concerned, and results of the year&apos;s operations should have an important effect on the near future trend of exploration and drilling. Besides the discovery of several new fields and many new sands in established fields, 1938 saw the discovery of a new Vicksburg sand trend and the first marine drilling off the South Texas Gulf Coast. Many new fields were discovered during the year, but only a few were subjected to an extensive drilling program.
