MINE power systems are quite different in many respects from those usually found in industrial plants. Wide areas are served, usually by a circuit which is connected continuously throughout the mine. In some mines one circuit may run for several miles. There are usually a small number of branch circuits involved considering the areas covered. In all mines circuits are sectionalized at approximately 2500 ft by means of switches. All, or at least most branch circuits, are sectionalized by manual switches. In some mines automatic sectionalizing gear is used to give automatic overload protection at various strategic points in the system. However at the present time this practice is by no means general. Circuit hazards in mine electric systems are much greater than those encountered in industrial installation. Falls of roof or coal form a prominent hazard which may break the wire and may cause ground faults or partial ground faults. Ordinarily electric cables in mines cannot be insulated, there- fore n fall can easily cause a short circuit. The humidity in most mines is greater than 95 pct and at many points the floor is wet and water may be dripping from the roof over insulators, increasing the difficulties at that point. All electrical circuits must be contained in the mine entries and space must also be provided for moving equipment and men. Consequently, because of the proximity of the power circuit to the locomotives and other moving equipment a considerable hazard is introduced. Mine haulage track is not always good so that wrecks are not unusual. A wreck frequently does consider- able damage to the power circuit. A ground fault frequently results in heavy arcing which may be sustained. If the damage to the circuit is mechanical it may mean that a trip of coal has wrecked and a great deal of coal dust could be thrown into the air as a result of the wreck. The arc resulting from the ground fault could ignite the coal dust and a mine explosion would result. A continued ground fault, even if high in resistance, also may ignite the coal which may be on the bottom of the entry and a mine fire may result. The fire hazard is one of the most serious hazards in any coal mine. Since the mine circuit is completely interconnected, any power interruption resulting from a fault seriously affects the whole operation. Unless the mine is completely sectionalized the whole mine will be shut down until the fault is located and the proper switches are opened to isolate the fault; even then large areas may still be without power if they are supplied by a single power circuit which may be opened in isolating the fault. Further, mine power is usually supplied from a relatively small number of substations and the fault may be on a stub feed circuit, in which case power cannot be restored until the fault has been cleared. Practice varies widely with respect to placement of substations. Usually they will be spaced from I to 2 miles in 500V operations, and at 1 mile intervals or less, in 250 V operation. Actual mining operations govern substation placements and no general rules can be followed.

WITH the possible exception of high-speed tool steel, the service demanded of rock-drill steel is probably more precarious than that of any other tool steel. Unaided by the helpful influence of alloys and dependent solely on the efficiency of the heat treatment applied for its ability to stand up under the abuse to which it is necessarily subjected, rock-drill steel is worthy of intensive study. For its heat treatment the smith has his fire, an oil fire perhaps, and a quenching bath; he judges' the temperature by his eye. There are shops where excellent drills are produced by this method, but there are more where the product varies between very good and very bad. Pyrometers with specially designed equipment are used in but few cases. But the responsibility for rock-drill failures does not rest entirely on the smith. Little has been published concerning the efficiency of drill steel, though the Canadian Mining Journal' published the breakage record of a large number of hollow drill steels. This record indicates that most of the breaks occur during the early life of the steel and that as a given batch of steel is used, its percentage of breakage decreases. This fact, the article points out, is at variance with the much-talked-f theory concerning failure from crystallization and fatigue. It seems to point to the fact that the greater part of drill-steel failure from breakage is traceable to faulty manufacture, resulting in defects in the bore of the hollow steel from inclusions of slag or oxides, etc. As this defective material meets with early failure, it is weeded out. In addition, some breakage may be caused by a lack of proper condition with respect to heat treatment of the steel as furnished by the manufacturer. In the article mentioned, the breakage of 1 ¼ -in. (3.17 cm.) hollow steel is given as 4.62 per cent. for the early period of use, with a decrease to 3.35 per cent. and 2.67 per cent. With time in use. For 1-in. (2.5 cm.) hexagonal hollow steel, the figures for breakage are 0.18 per cent. and 0.06 per cent.; attention is called to the "enormous decrease in breakage by the use of smaller diameter drills." THE Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine mining division, District of Cochrane, in the northern part of the Province of Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, with a population of 25,119, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto. GEOLOGY The property is situated on the northwest limb of a major syncline, which pitches northeast at approximately 50°. The principal rocks of the Hollinger area are of pre-Cambrian age and consist of altered, schistose, Keewatin lava flows intruded by stocks of schistose, quartz-feldspar porphyry generally assigned to the Algoman period. The structure of the Keewatin series is extremely complex as a result of close folding and some faulting. The schistosity, trending north 70° east and dipping steeply to the southeast, is most highly developed along a subsidiary anticline in which the major porphyry bodies occur. The ore bodies, which exhibit three principal structures, consist of quartz veins and associated pyritized wall rock. Some lodes are com-posed of en echelon veins, others exhibit a main quartz body with branch-ing stringers and a third consists of a single definite lead. Gold, in a coarse visible form, may be confined to quartz in some ore bodies but in others it is finely divided and is found not only in quartz but also asso-ciated with pyrite in the adjacent wall rock. In many veins the dis-tribution of gold is such that there are several ore sections, separated by areas of low-grade material, in the same vein although its physical appearance remains unchanged.

The Republic of Colombia is the northernmost country of South America. Its northern coast line exteilds from the frontier of Costa Rica to that of Venezuela, on the Caribbean Sea. On the west it fronts on the Pacific Ocean, along the Panama Isthmus, and down to Ecuador. It is bounded on the south by Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, which latter country with Venezuela form its boundaries on the east. Its area exceeds 500,000 square miles. It is deemed unnecessary to give here a map of the country. Fig. 1, a map of the department of Antioquia, studied in connection with a good modern general map of Colombia, will explain itself. Fig. 1 contains also some of the region of the Cauca valley, described in this paper. Access.—The interior of Colombia is reached through the ports of Sabanilla and Cartagena on the Caribbean Sea, each of which places is connected with the Magdalena river by a short narrow-gauge railroad, running respectively to Barranquilla and Calamar. From these points lines of river-steamers serve the ports of the upper Magdalena, which they reach in journeys of a week to ten days. After leaving the steamer, a short railroad journey, followed by a long and tedious mule-ride, reaches the cities of Bogota and Medellin. Quibdo, at the head of the navigation of the Atrato, and its most important town, is connected by steamer-service with Cartagena, by canoe-routes with the various districts of the Choco, and by mule-road, at present well-nigh impassable, with the heart of Antioquia. On the western coast the port of Tumaco is a starting-point for canoe- and mule-travel to the southern part of the department of Cauca, while Buenaventura is the port of the central section of the valley of the Cauca,

Over the past several years, the steady progress of gas lift from a mysterious art into a developing science has been traceable through the many fine papers that have appeared in Journal of Petroleum Technology. Consequently, this magazine has rightly become a standard for the serious students of gas lift all over the world. The following discussion is offered in a sincere attempt to accurately present certain topics covered in the subject paper in the light of acknowledged state of the art procedures. INSTALLATION DESIGN The first point to be questioned is the author's installation design, beginning with Eq. 6. The use of 1,200 psi in the spacing equation instead of the 1,275 psi noted as available seems, at first glance, to be a simple arithmetic error. Upon further examination, it appears evident that both this 75 psi plus the 100-psi safety factor must be subtracted from available kickoff pressure because of conditions imposed by the characteristics of the ASC valve (see Fig. B-1). Pressure-charged valve design is incorrectly penalized by spacing the first valve using only 1,100 psi. The use of such a high back-pressure makes it appear that a typical ASC installation would require no more valves than a comparable conventional valve installation. Using a value of 100-psi tree pressure, the well could be valved to 11,000 ft very conservatively with seven pressure-operated valves, but would still require 11 ASC valves. The use of 400-B/D spacing gradient for a 140-B/D rate is not an accepted practice using precharged valves. The author would have done well to note the advantages to be gained by reducing the 500-psi tree pressure, which is clearly explained by Beadle, Harlan and Brown.' In Step 1 of Part III of the continuous flow discussion, the author incorrectly applies the Poettmann and Carpenter curves.2 Item 2 is an incorrect statement. An excellent reference on this point is the paper by Baxen-dell and Thomas.' VALVE MECHANICS The next topic relates to the mechanics of precharged valves. Eq. 2 for the ASC valve can be used to describe the condition of equilibrium, wherein the valve is closed with opening pending. When this equation is used to determine relative values of casing, dome and tubing pressure with conditions approaching the transition value, some strange results are obtained. The following uses the author's symbols and values given on page 689. Fig. B-1 shows the condition that exists at the moment an ASC valve has been uncovered during the unloading process (Condition I). The obvious result is a locked condition. The basis for the curve is shown on the figure which includes 1,000 psig casing pressure to uncover the valve. If injection gas is not bled off the casing until the pressure is decreased by an amount exceeding the stabilizer discharging valve pressure, upward adjustment of the casing pressure is mandatory for the valve to open and unloading operations to continue. In Condition I the dome pressure exceeds the casing pressure by 20 psi, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 1,212 psig. This tubing pressure would not exist under the assumed conditions. In Condition I1 the casing pressure is increased to the dome pressure, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 1,102 psig. It is apparent that the casing pressure must be increased to a value exceeding the dome pressure before unloading operations could continue. In Condition I11 a maximum casing pressure of 100 psi (stabilizer charging valve set pressure) above the dome pressure is reached, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 549 psig. The author's statement after Eq. 5 that "the minimum tubing pressure required to open an ASC valve is equal to the casing pressure at depth less the transition pressure of the valve" is incorrect except for Condition I11 only. Otherwise, the equation is invalid.

PART I. OUTLINE OF INVESTIGATION, DESCRIPTION OF MATERIAL AND METHODS RESULTS of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., have been discussed by the writer in several recent papers.1,2,3,4 In those papers references were also given to the work of Haigh in 1917.6 Efforts by the writer to obtain a better understanding of some of the factors involved in corrosion-fatigue finally developed into a general investigation of the effect of time and cyclic stress on corrosion of metals. Corrosion fatigue of Metals As described in the papers mentioned, rotating-cantilever specimens, conically tapered so that the stress is nearly uniform over a length of about 1.5 in., were subjected to simultaneous fatigue and corrosion. For this purpose a stream of water was diagonally applied so as to sweep the specimen from the outer to the inner fillet and surround the stressed surface with water. The fresh water is a calcium carbonate water, the composition of which has been given in a previous paper.2 The salt water is Severn River water having a saline content about one-third that of sea water.

The tellurium-rich region of the Sb-TI-Te ternary system was investigated by means of DTA, metallo-graphic, X-ray, and electron beam microprobe techniques on the sections Sb2Te3-T12Te3, SbTlTe2-Te, SbT1Te2-Sb2Te3, and SbTlTe2-T12Te3. The phase behavior of this region is summarized in terms of four ternary invariant reactions and a schematic reaction diagram is suggested. Isopleths for the sections SbT1Te2-Sb2Te3, Sb2Te,-T12Te3, and SbTlTe2-Te were constructed, and a schematic diagram of the projections of the liquidus lines and invariant planes is presented. No evidence was found to support the existence of the ternary compound "SbTlTe3", or pseudo-binary behavior of the section T12Te3-Sb2Te3, as reported by Borisova and Efremova. Electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity measurements were made at room temperature on fully annealed samples. 1 HE phase relationships in chalcogenides are often complex and difficult to resolve, particularly since the approach to equilibrium is a rather slow process. For example, the phase diagram of the T1-Te binary system was in doubt until clarified by Rabenau et al.,1 the phase fields at compositions near Bi2Te3 in the Bi-Te binary system have only recently been satisfactorily elucidated by Glatz,2 and there may still be some question as to the extent of the Sb2Te3 field in the Sb-Te system.3-5 In ternary systems, the existence of the compound "AgFeTe2" was the subject of a number of conflicting reports6-8 and the stoichiometry of the composition "AgSbTe2" was in doubt for a period of time.9 Recently, questions have arisen regarding the existence of certain compounds in the ternary systems Bi-Tl-Te10-14 and Sb-Tl-Te.15 The impetus for studies of these latter systems stemmed from the report of Borisova et a1.10 of a congruently melting ternary compound, "BiTlTe3", which apparently had extremely favorable thermoelectric properties for room-temperature cooling applications. Attempts by other investigators to produce the compound or confirm the transport properties proved to be unsuccessful.12-14 Recently, Chiang and Gluck14 reported studies of the phase relations in the tellurium-rich region of the Bi-T1-Te system which indicated that the section T12Te3-Bi2Te3 was not pseudobinary as suggested by Borisova et a1.10 The contention of Spitzer and sykes12 was supported that the composition "BiT1Te3" was multiphase, with the primary constituent actually being BiTlTe2, a compound whose existence has been well demonstrated.16,17 The investigation reported in the present paper was prompted by a later report of Borisova and Efremova15 on a similar study of the section T12Te3-Sb2Te3 from the Sb-T1-Te system. They also claimed this section to be pseudobinary, and that a ternary compound "SbTlTe," was formed peritectically. Some "preliminary" crystallographic data were given for the compound and thermoelectric transport properties were presented. In view of the questions concerning the behavior of the Bi-T1-Te system and the existence of the compound "BiT1Te3" it was suspected that the Sb-T1-Te system might behave in a similar fashion, particularly in light of the known existence of a compound SbT1Te2, iso-structural with BiT1Te2.17 Consequently, an investigation was undertaken to clarify the phase relationships in the tellurium-rich region of the Sb-T1-Te system. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of this study, including a representation of the phase relations, isopleths for various composition sections, and the determination of some phase compositions and transport properties. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Commercially available high-purity (99.999+ pct) elements, purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co., were used for the sample preparation. All samples were made from thoroughly mixed powders of previously prepared master alloys: SbTlTe2, Te, Sb2Te3, and T12Te3. Stoichiometric quantities of the constituents for each 10-g sample were weighed into a specially cleaned fused silica tube and sealed under a vacuum of better than 5 x 10-5 torr. The sealed constituents were fused and reacted at 650° to 750°C for at least 4 hr under continuous agitation in a "rocking" furnace, and the resulting product was air-cooled. The tube was opened and the sample was ground to a powder. A portion of the powder was rebottled in a DTA tube under vacuum, and the rest of the material was similarly resealed in a separate tube, re-fused in the rocking furnace, and again cooled to make the ingots for electrical and microstructural studies. All samples were subjected to further heat treatments as discussed in the section on experimental results. Each DTA tube was made of 7-mm-OD fused silica tubing with a concentric 2-mm-ID depression about 4 mm long formed in the bottom to accommodate a thermocouple. The size of a DTA sample was 0.5 to 1.0 g. An Aminco Thermoanalyzer whose accuracy was within 2°C18 was used for the DTA measurements. The metallographic samples were prepared by conventional techniques. A solution of FeCL dissolved in a methanol-HC1 mixture was found to be the most satisfactory etchant. Electron beam microprobe scanning and point-count examinations were made on polished and unetched samples using an ARL Electron Microprobe at an electron beam voltage of 20 kv. The detectors were set to receive characteristic La1 radiation. IT has been ascertained in recent years that certain rocktypes, geological formations and structural conditions may be used as fairly reliable guides, when prospecting in recognized mineral belts or mining districts, with a reasonable certainty of discovering "pay-ore;" and that such is considered as a practically established conclusion may be inferred from a perusal of the recent reports of the U. S. Geological Survey and the literature of the several scientific societies discussing minim, geology, and kindred subjects. Cripple Creek is no exception to this conclusion, and the rock-type or association, rather than the structural condition, is the most infallible guide.† These guides consist of four, possibly five, dike-rocks, three of which are extremely basic, while the fourth is an acid rock of an entirely dissimilar character. The basic rocks are nepheline-basalt, limburgite, feldspar-basalt and tephrite. There are grounds, however, for believing that the two latter are subdivisions of one type, and therefore will be described under one head. The acid rock is quartz-porphyry. Nepheline-basalt is-a rock encountered in but few localities elsewhere on this continent, and occurs in narrow dikes cutting various formations. When typical‡ it is composed of

Pvfoperties of rubidium and cesium are compared with those of other alkali metals. Methods for the preparation of rubidium and cesium metal are reviewed briefly, ad hazards and safety precautions required in handling rubidium and cesium metal are described. SimPle methods for handling laboratory quantities of elemental rubidium ad cesium under oil and under argon are illustrated. CESIUM and rubidium were both discovered by Bunsen and Kirchoff in the years 1860 and 1861. Cesium was discovered while Bunsen and Kirchoff were making a spectrographic study of spring water from Durkheim, Germany. It was the first element discovered by this technique. The element was given the Latin name "caesius" for sky blue because of the color it imparted to flames. Elemental cesium was first prepared by Setterberg in 1881 through electrolysis of a molten mixture of cesium and barium cyanides.' In 1861, Bunsen and Mirchoff discovered rubidium while making a spectrographic study of the alkali content of lepidolite ore from Saxony. Two prominent dark red lines appeared in the spectrum and so the element was named "rubidius" or dark red. In 1861 Bunsen and Kirchoff first prepared elemental rubidium through the electrolysis of molten rubidium chl~ride.~ The alkali metals are very similar in their chemical and physical properties. They are the most active metals, and all exhibit a single oxidation state of one. They are so reactive that they are never found in nature in the elemental state. The reactivity of he metals increases with atomic number. Rubidiurn and cesium ignite spontaneously in air and react explosively with water. This extreme reactivity makes necessary special equipment and techniques for the safe preparation and use of the metals. The cation: of Group IA can be separated from the metallic cations of other groups with relative ease, but the separation of the individual alkali cations is much more difficult because of their close chemical similarity. This close chemical and physical similarity of alkali metals can be inferred from the atomic radii, oxidation numbers, and ioni-zation potentials shown in Table I. A difficult but the most practical physical method of separating the elemental alkali metals from one another is by distillation. Only lithium has a boiling point sufficiently far-removed from the boiling points of the other alkali metals to make this method of separation feasible without elaborate and expensive equipment. This method is not used, however, for lithium because it possesses sufficient chemical dissimilarity from the other alkalies for it to be separated relatively easily as lithium hydroxide monohydrate or as lithium carbonate. Nowhere can there be found a more misleading statement than the old one that "Iron can be manufactured cheaper in the South." During the past decade ironmakers and users of iron have heard varied and sundry stories of the wonderful resources of the Birmingham district, including abundant ore and coal fields, cheap labor, a wonderful climate and similar industrial Utopian statements. Birmingham represents the major portion of the iron business in the South, and as Birmingham fares so goes the iron business of the South. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the actual conditions surrounding ironmaking in the South, especially in the Birmingham, or North Alabama, district. By a presentation of facts it is desired to point out that the "cheap iron" of the industrial South is a thing of the past, primarily because of increased labor cost and because labor is radically different in performance to what it was years ago. Also, because most of the raw materials needed in ironmaking that would be classed better than inferior are gone. Important Factors The several important factors that have been responsible for this change are : 1. Shrinkage of the iron business in the South. 2. Increased labor cost. 3. The development of the South, with an industrial trend, without a substantial increase of its own iron-consuming market. 4. Increased freight rates, which has narrowed the market that might be reached from this district. 5. Depletion of the better grades of raw materials, both ore and coal. ALTHOUGH the metallurgical treatment for the Ophir Hill tailings was developed more than 20 years ago and in the interim a vast amount of experimental work was done with later-developed flotation reagents, it was found necessary to revert to the original oil reagents and their combinations with specific chemical reagents in order to obtain results of economic value. This is of especial interest because in present ore-treatment investigations later-developed flotation reagents are used almost exclusively and the coal-tar derivatives, except in certain patented reagents, are virtually neglected. These coal-tar oils and derivatives still have a definite field of application, especially in the treatment of some oxidized ores when modified sulphidization is desirable. The Ophir Hill tailings deposit is in Ophir Canyon, Tooele County, Utah, about 55 miles southwest of Salt Lake City and 25 miles south of the Tooele smelter of the International Smelting and Refining Co. A road good for trucks leads directly from the Ophir mill to the smelter. TAILINGS These tailings were produced in the old Ophir Hill gravity concentrator previous to 1921. The original mill ore was a heavy lead-zinc-copper-silver-iron sulphide ore formed by limestone replacement. The gangue is a highly siliceous lime. An assay of the original milling ore would approximate 1.0 per cent Cu, 6 to 8 per cent Pb, 6 to 8 per cent Zn, 8 to 12 oz. Ag, 18 to 25 per cent Fe, 2.0 per cent CaO, 20 to 5o per cent insoluble. The gold content was 0.005 oz. or less. Tailing was impounded in a fairly wide area in a canyon about ½ mile below the mill. A number of dirt embankments were thrown up to form settling ponds and the tailing was allowed to flow through them in series. Coarser sand deposited at the upper end of the ponds and the finer slimes settled gradually as they passed through the successive settling ponds. As soon as the coarser tailings filled a pond, the tailings were by-passed to the next pond and teams and scrapers were used to haul the deposited sand onto the banks to make them higher. The final dump was approximately 2500 ft. long and 250 ft. wide at the bottoms, with banks sloping up at 45°. The coarser sands predominated at the upper ends and sides of the ponds while the proportion of slimes increased steadily at the lower ends. The lower end of the pond contained over 50,000 tons of slime tailings, 90 per cent of which passed through a 200mesh screen. SAMPLING The entire tailings deposit was sampled by drilling vertical holes so placed as to give data concerning size segregation and the contour of the underlying ground as well as to secure an assay sample. The application of the mass action law to the thermodynamic treatment of metal-slag equilibria is discussed. The consideration of the reactions essentially as ionic exchange equilibria is shown to be both an advantage and an aid for the elucidation of the theoretical treatment. This is illustrated by several examples. In general two different methods of application of the mass action law to metal-slag equilibria have been used by different groups of investigators. These could be called the oxide reaction and the ionic reaction approach respectively. At the recent discussion in the metallurgical section of the I.U.P.A.C. Congress in Montreal, 1961,' divergent opinions prevailed regarding the most rational way of applying the mass action law to metal-slag equilibria. This question is of fundamental importance in the treatment and understanding of theoretical chemical metallurgy. Consequently, the following is an attempt to contribute towards its clarification. As an example, the distribution of iron and manganese between molten iron and slag will be considered. I) THE OXIDE EXCHANGE REACTION APPROACH The equilibrium between iron and manganese between molten iron and slag is frequently formulated as an oxide metal exchange reaction as follows:

The importance, validity, and acceptability of the Paley Report has become the great issue of the minerals industry. A 12-man panel made up of representatives of various facets of the industry sat down at the 1952 Mining Congress Show in Denver in an attempt to clarify the many opinions currently held concerning the report. Howard Young, deputy administrator of the Defense Materials Procurement Administration, noted that the report had caused more discussion and serious thinking than any other government report, He did not subscribe to the "have not" principle, however, but called it a "need more" principle. Horace M. Allbright, president of U. S. Potash Corp., believes industry should continue to develop the report. He cited the editorial appearing in the September, 1952 edition of Bining Engineering,,, "Don't Let It Die," as expressing his feelings. Edward Snyder, president of Combined Metals Reduction Corp., says the statistics used in the report were used to promote a false international policy. The nature and the limits of validity of Darcy's law US applied to the flow of natural gas through reservoirs has been considered in order to resolve some controversial aspects of the effect of turbulence on pressure drops. The equivalence between various concepts and viewpoints advanced in the past by several investigators to explain how and why a gas well does not necessarily perform according to Darcy's law is shown. Starting with generalized equations of flow of fluids through porous media, a partial differential equation has been derived which accurately represents the flow at all rates. This equation has been numerically solved using an IBM 704 digital computer. The results permit plots of unsteady radial pressure distribution curves from which specific isochronal backpressure curves may be constructed. These back-pressure curves show the effect of the ,8 factor on the slope of the back-pressure curve. The calculations further indicate that the drainage radius for a gas well in turbulent flow propagates at a rate dependent upon the rate of production at the wellbore. This is quite different from the case with liquid flow or natural-gas flow in laminar regime. Additionally, the effect of reservoir inhomogeneities and crossflow between layers of different permeability on the back-pressure performance of gas wells has been conridered. In light of the current numerical results the significance and linlitation of the rate of flow function Y proposed by Smith" has been discussed. INTRODUCTION The relationship between the pressure drop and flow rate in problems of fluid flow through porous media is known to be affected by the nature of flow through the porous matrix. It has been observed by many that, for a range of flow rates, the pressure drop remains proportional to the rate of flow. When some flow rate is reached, however, it is usually observed that the pressure drop gradually begins to increase more than proportionally to the flow rate. It is well known that this phenomenon was first observed by Osborne Reynolds in 1901 in experimenting with flow through pipes. In his classical experiments, Reynolds made visual observations on the condition of streamlines evidenced by injecting a dye into water flowing through glass tubes. In these experiments, the abrupt transition between steady, "streamline, laminar" flow and unsteady random turbulent flow was found to be a function of the dimensionless group (Dvp/u), now known as the Reynolds number. During these experiments, in addition to observations on the nature of flow regimes, the proportionality between flow rate and pressure drop in laminar flow was contrasted with the nonlinearity between these variables in turbulent flow. Fancher and Lewis' reported data on various consolidated and unconsolidated sands in 1933. Their conclusions were that ". . . the flow of fluids through these porous materials closely resembles that through pipes; that there is a condition of flow in porous systems which resembles viscous flow, another which corresponds to turbulent; that the change from one type to the other takes place at a definite and reproducible condition for each system". In 1947, Brownell and Katz published a method to predict the laminar and turbulent flow behavior from the particle size, bed porosity and the particle sphericity, employing the friction factor-Reynolds number charts for pipes. Several investigators have verified the work of Fancher, Lewis and Barnes and presented their data as friction factor-vs-Reynolds number plots.' The equation which would represent the pressure gradient over the whole range of velocity must have an added term over that represented by Darcy's law. Accordingly, the pressure gradient necessary to sustain flow at the velocity (v) through a porous medium may be represented by the following equation, suggested by Forscheimer." The nature and the range of validity of Darcy's law has been the subject of studies by many investigators over the past years. While everyone seemed to agree on the need for a quadratic correction term to Darcy's law to make it effective over the range of velocities, the concept of inception of turbulence and the use of the term "turbulent flow" remained controversial. IN powder metallurgy it has often been observed that shrinkage may occur in one direction and growth in another during sintering. Even in long-time sintering experiments the rate of shrinkage may be different in different parts of the compact. In the fabrication of some parts requiring a constant permeability it is even questionable in some cases whether pressing from one direction should be attempted. These observations require for their interpretation a more detailed study of green or pressed density than has heretofore been available. Usually average density measurements of the whole compact are made and in some cases carefully cut sections are measured. A different approach to the problem was first mentioned by Rakowski1 and also used by Balshin.2 Balshin's diagram is reproduced in Fig r and schematically shows the result of pressing three layers of metal powder with fine intervening layers of graphite. The retarding effect of the die walls and a qualitative example of the density distribution is evident. More quantitative information about the distribution of density within a cold-pressed powder compact would be useful in showing the variation in density in compacts as influenced by the type of powder, shape of die, lubrication during the process, and other variables. Furthermore, information about the cracking of cold-pressed compacts may be obtained from an analysis of the stress distribution within a powder compact, and some information about the stress distribution can be obtained in turn from the density and strain distributions. A more detailed report on some of the present experiments appears in reference 3. PRESENT INVESTIGATION In order to ascertain the density gradients in cold-pressed metal powders, a deformable lead grid within the powder was employed. After pressing in cylindrical dies the ejected compact was radiographed, giving a pattern of the deformed grid. From the radiograph density and deformation from point to point is readily measured. From the radiograph strain distribution and stress trajectories were also determined. The latter also permits the determination of the coefficient of friction at the die wall. This technique indicates that the densest part of a compact pressed from one side is at the top outer circumference and the least dense region at the bottom circumference near the stationary plunger. For some heights of compacts the density at the axis is such that the lower density is at the top rather than at the bottom. So irregular a density distribution is due primarily to die-wall friction. As the ratio of diameter to height of compact is increased the die walls play a correspond¬ingly smaller role. More uniform density

The application of electric power for driving mine hoists handling heavy loads at high speeds has recently been extended by the installation of what is probably the largest electrically driven hoist in this country at the Granite Mountain shaft of the North Butte Mining Co., Butte, Mont. While the weight of rock which is hoisted by this machine is not the largest now being handled by electric mine hoists, the speed of hoisting is so, and the combination of the high speed with the heavy load has resulted in a machine of considerable interest to all those actively engaged in mining. Aside from mere considcration of size, this installation deserves attention because of the careful attention given, not only to the question of economy of operation, but to the details of construction and installation of the entire equipment. The conditions to be met in this installation were as follows: Weight of rock to be raised per trip, 7 gross tons........... 15,680 1b. Development is proceeding and a depth of 2,900 ft. has already been reached. The rock is handled underground in cars holding % ton, and about 10 cars are the usual load for a skip. All of the ore is dumped into underground bins, which are of diffcrent capacities varying up to 250 tons. From the bins the ore is fed into the skips without passing into measuring pockets. The Choctaw coal-field is a direct westward extension of the Arkansas coal-field, but its coals are not like Arkansas coals, except in the country immediately adjoining the Arkansas line. From the base of the coal-bearing rocks up to the top of the coalmeasures, I find a total thickness of at least 8500 feet. This great mass of coal-bearing rocks consists of an alternation of slates, shales, sandstones and coal-beds, with their accompanying under-beds of fire-clay. Only one small bed of limestone was observed. This occurs near the middle of the series; it is about eighteen inches thick, and quite arenaceous. The formation is naturally subdivided by seven or eight thick beds of sandstone, varying from 50 to 200 feet in thickness, the outcropping edges of which form a series of more or less bold " hogback " ridges, the interbedded shales and slate forming the intervening valleys. The base of the coal-series is a massive sandstone, ranging from 100 to 200 feet or more in thickness, lying immediately beneath the Grady coal-bed, which is the lowest known coal. In the district embraced between. the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad and the Arkansas State line, this sand-rock usually forms a bold semi-mountainous ridge. This is the ridge through which the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad passes at Bryan station, where the Grady coal-bed is opened and worked, from which point it can be traced westward without difficulty, passing about three miles north of Le Flor on the same railroad, thence west to the " Little Narrows " (which is merely a gap in the ridge), 'and beyond to a point two miles west of the Thompson-McKinney place, where it swings abruptly north for a mile or more, only to resume immediately its westward course, forming for some miles the northern boundary of the valley known as the " Boiling-Springs Prairie," beyond which it trends somewhat

On commencing the construction of the Orford Company's copper smelting works, at Bergen Point, N. J., I endeavored to convince our President, Mr. W. E. C. Eustis, by actual tests, that at the pressure of from 15 to 18 ounces per square inch, employed by us in smelting, less power was consumed in delivering a unit of blast by a Baker blower than by a fan blower. I attempted to prove this in the following manner: Across the mouth of a No. 5) Baker blower I firmly fastened a board with two round holes, 6 inches in diameter, cut in it. The board was fastened so tightly that no air could escape except through the holes. I then drove the blower at several differerent speeds, observing the pressure at which the air excaped through the two openings for each different speed of the blower, and also indicating the engine, whose only work at that time was to drive the blower. From this I calculated the quantity of power required to deliver, with a Baker blower, sufficient air to keep the pressure at a given point, while it escaped freely through the two six-inch apertures into the open air; or, in other words, to deliver air at a given pressure through these two openings. From the total power so consumed it was, of course, necessary to deduct the power which was required to drive the engine itself. This was ascertained by removing from the engine the belt which drove the blower, and then noting the quantity of power consumed in simply turning the engine over without any

MANY aspects of the formation of the metastable w phase in titanium-transition metal alloys have been described in several recent papers.1-4 These papers have reviewed earlier work on the w phase and have further defined most of the important features related to the formation of this phase, e.g-., its crystal structure, composition, and morphology. There are, however, several important points regarding formation of the w phase in titanium alloys which have been described in less detail. Two of these are the relationship between lattice misfit and w phase morphology and the influence of lattice misfit on the mode of formation of the equilibrium a phase. In this communi- cation we will present transmission electron microscopy results relevant to these two points. The alloys used in this study were prepared by non-consumable electrode arc melting, each 30-g button being remelted a minimum of twelve times. The alloy compositions we have studied are listed in Table I. Thin foils were prepared using standard techniques described elsewhere. Two distinct c' phase morphologies have been reported in earlier papers. The phase is ellipsoidal in the Ti-Mo3 and Ti-Nbl system and cubical in the Ti-V3 system. Results of the present study show that the w phase is also cubical in Ti-Mn, Ti-Fe, and Ti-Cr alloys as illustrated in Fig. l(b) to (d). Electrical Conductivity. - The subject of the relative conducting power of different minerals is one of minor interest.* In general most minerals, except those having a metallic luster among the sulphides and oxides, are non-conductors. Only the non-conductors can show pyro-electrical phenomena, and only the conductors can give a thermo-electric current. 437. Frictional Electricity. - The development of an electrical charge on many bodies by friction is a familiar subject. All minerals become electric by friction, although the degree to which this is manifested differs widely. There is no line of distinction among minerals, dividing them into positively electric and negatively electric; for both electrical states may be presented by different varieties of the same species, and by the same variety in different states. The gems are in general positively electric only when polished; the diamond, however, exhibits positive electricity whether polished or not.
