Any design of a mine roof in bedded deposits which ignores differential deflections at the supports can quickly lead to dangerous overstressing. As illustrated by the typical case presented on page 1029, if one support deflects only 0.1 in. more than its neighbor, stresses 50 pct higher than anticipated will result. Previous studies1-3 have assumed that the mine roof acts like a beam clamped at both ends, with no deflection or slope4 at the supports (Fig. 1). Largely forgotten by today's environmentalists and mineralogists is a pioneer scientist of the nineteenth century named Ellen Swallow. Fortunately, the memory of her accomplishments has been resurrected by Robert Clarke in his biography, Ellen Swallow: The Woman Who Founded Ecology. Her direct contributions to the field of mining included authoring First Lessons in Minerals and an analysis of the rare mineral samarskite which indicated the presence of an insoluble residue; her findings led to the eventual discovery of samarium and gadolinium. While enjoying the distinction of being the first woman student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she successfully isolated vanadium in an ore which other experts had examined without detecting the metal.

In gassy coal mines, abandoned worked-out areas are natural reservoirs that may contain air- methane mixtures. The quantity of such mixtures is continuously increasing or decreasing as atmospheric pressure falls or rises. This is in accordance with Boyle's Gas Law, which states that the volume of a perfect gas varies inversely with the absolute pressure. In large, open gob areas without a bleeder ventilation system, atmospheric pressure is a static force acting in all directions. Changes in atmospheric pressure may occur rapidly or slowly, but any change will result in a change in the quantity of gob air-methane mixtures.

SIR ROBERT HADFIELD, London, England (written discussion*).-We have in the past known so little about tungsten that an important paper such as Mr. Zay Jeffries contributes is most welcome. I have not much personal knowledge on the subject except as regards combinations of iron with tungsten. I put forward the results of my research on natural alloys in 1903,1 and so far as I know the facts there presented still stand. Singular to say, tungsten added to iron affects the electrical resistance less than any other added element. The following tables taken from research work by myself and Sir William Barrett may be of interest.

In connection with the discussion of the paper of Mr. James Gayley, presented at the Baltimore meeting, in February, 1892, on " The Preservation of the Hearth and Bosh-walls of the Blast-furnace,"* I offered a translation of a letter received from our distinguished honorary member, Professor P. Ritter von Tunner, concerning the use of carbon-bricks at the Donawitz furnace, then (February, 1892) in the third month of its campaign. Wrought iron and steel have been prepared from limonite, hematite, and magnetite ores by gaseous reduction, compacting and squeezing the resulting product at high temperature and finally melting the wrought iron so formed. The structure, analyses, mechanical and magnetic properties of the products are given. It is found that the structure of iron ores is best studied by subjecting them to gaseous reduction and using metallographic technique on the resulting sponge iron. In this way the cell structure of iron ore is clearly shown. The wrought iron made by heating compacted sponge iron to 1450" C., and forging, shows a cell structure inherited from the ore. This cell structure is further preserved in melting and casting the wrought iron. The probable relation of the properties of the materials to this inherited cell structure is discussed.

The two mines are in the same hill, Bertha being on the northern 'slope and Falling Cliff on the top and opposite slope. The formation is No. 2 limestone. The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company expanded computer usage in the areas of engineering and production analyses by establishing a time-share terminal with Ohio University. Through the use of a graduate student on a consulting basis this relationship has enabled the company to gain computer programming capabilities in the scientific languages such as FORTRAN IV. The engineering function has benefitted from programs which dealt with mine power distribution and geostatistical analysis. Additionally, the University has modified a group of simulation programs developed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute so they are interactive enabling data entry from the remote terminal.

Indian Creek Mine, newest of the St. Joseph Lead Co. properties, is located in southeast Missouri on the flanks of a buried porphyry ridge. Here the orebodies are very irregular in size and shape and have a regional pitch of about 15°, which may vary locally from 0 to 90°. To maintain an economical grade of ore, selective mining is imperative. The room and casual pillar method is employed with 20-ft diam pillars 35 ft apart where possible. Stopes vary in height from 10 to 55 ft. All are too small to supply a loading unit continuously.
