In our mixture at Musconetcong Iron Works we have an exceedingly hard, dense, magnetic ore, which contains some iron pyrites. The sulphur runs from 0.5 to 1.5 per cent. To prepare this ore better for the furnace, and with a view of making a softer iron, we tried roasting the ore in a Gjers kiln. When it worked well, the improvement in the iron was very perceptible ; but the ore was continually sintering and forming scaffolds across the bosh of the kiln.

In the spring of 1935 the authors undertook to compare the geomagnetic and direct-current carth-resistivity methods of tracing a concealed dike along its strike. An area near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was selected, where a diabase dike was known. For rapid reconnaissance the magnetic method offers several advantages ovcr the electrical. The resistivity method is useful in determining the position of underground water, a factor of consideration in regions where mining is contemplated. All factors considered, the coincidence between the positions of the dike as determined by the two methods is striking.

They came from Paris, Washington and Rabat; two directors, two chief geologists and the president of our own local subsidiary company. Such a meeting was not unprecedented, but it seeemed to us that our president was overzealous in arranging for inspections of each exploration site. One was a problem. Jacques, our president, had concocted the idea that we should lead this learned, mature (not exactly aged) group into the desert to see newly found anomaly. It was in virgin country and had been marked by dropping a flour sack on it from the air.

I therefore raise a question as to there being some difference in standards used by different manufacturers in regard to the dimensions of the shovels for similar sizes and styles, so it may be rather confusing to some of us when we attempt to use the table in this paper and classify the capacity of the shovels as given here with some that are on the market.

COAL, its acquisition and consumption, has loomed large enough in the lives of many of us at one time or another, not from a technical standpoint, perhaps, but on a utility basis, to keep the house warm and the plant going. The Chairman of the Coal Division was much like many of us in that respect until after his graduation from Northwestern in 1928. Then he went to work as geologist for the Zeigler Coal Co., investigating strip coal possibilities in western Illinois, and also did research in the microscopy of coal at the Illinois Geological Survey. His interest in coal was originated and stimulated by Gilbert H. Cady, of the Illinois Geological Survey. With his advice, and with the co-operation of M. M. Leighton, Survey chief, the results of his research work on the mineral constituents of coal at the Survey were accepted as a thesis for his doctorate which he received from Harvard in 1935. Nine days before the Christmas of 1906, Clayton Garrett Ball was born at Wauconda, Ill. His father was professor of geology at Northwestern until he retired in 1946; retirement didn't lessen his active interest in his profession; he's still teaching geology at the University of Kansas City. In vol.33 of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, London (part 2, for 1870-71), may be found a statement of the cost of two blast furnaces, together with a somewhat detailed description. The attempt will he made in this note to restate these items of cost, so that the information may be rendered perhaps more accessible to our members than in its present place of record, and also in order that the items may be more intelligibly compared among themselves, or with similar items in other cases.

MEMBERS of the Research Committee lunched to-gether on Monday and discussed the work and plans of the Committee. Some re-assignment of duties was made and a request put in for another member specializing in lead and zinc. By request, Director Flinn of the Engineering Foundation presented the problem of the proposed investigation of iron alloys. It was decided to call together a special committee in May to determine on recommendations. A. C. Fieldner discussed coal research and Chairman Manning was authorized to ascertain by letter ballot the opinions, on certain phases of this, of all members of the Committee.

Determining the age at which to replace a specific piece of mining equipment, and choice of the best possible replacement, is a problem common to nearly all mining operations. This paper examines the data required for intelligent equipment replacement decisions and discusses how to predict future repair cost from historic data, determine the total cost of various replacement alternatives, and evaluate the different replacement alternatives. Various operations research and computer methods were used to develop this easily-used, practical equipment replacement method.

Excavation of cavities below the ground water level induces water influx from the surrounding aquifer. An estimate of the rates of flow prior to excavation operations may be of valuable information for the mining engineer. The present paper deals with water influx into cavities of the tunnel type, e.g., mine galleries, tunnels, etc. The solution of the flow problem was obtained by a numerical finite difference method. The results are presented in dimensionless form as a function of the parameters characterizing the location of the cavity in the aquifer.

WHEN the atomic age broke suddenly upon the world in 1945 with all its terrible implications, predictions concerning the future of atomic energy were as numerous as columnists and often inflated. Today, some seven years since the explosion and probably ten since the Government took over development of nuclear energy, the impact on our way of living has been largely political (except of course for the thousands of people who have become employed in the AEC). Considering the world situation, weapons have come first naturally. But credible progress in the plow-share uses of nuclear energy-medicine, agriculture, power-can also be noted.

SPONGE iron as produced at Anaconda is a fine, -35 mesh, impure product, about 50 pct metallic iron, obtained from the reduction of iron calcine at a temperature of 1850°F by use of coke resulting from slack coal. The metallic iron particles are bulky and spongey and precipitate copper readily and rapidly from a copper sulphate solution. Investigation of the treatment of Greater Butte Project, Kelley, ore at Anaconda early showed the desirability of using sponge iron as a precipitant for the copper in solution resulting from desliming of the ore in a dilute sulphuric acid solution.
