262. Parallel Grouping. - Connected with the subject of twin crystals is that of the parallel position of associated crystals of the same species, or of different species. Crystals of the same species occurring together are very commonly in parallel position. In this way large crystals, as of calcite, quartz, fluorite, are sometimes built up of smaller individuals grouped together with corresponding faces parallel. This parallel grouping is often seen in crystals as they lie on the supporting rock. On glancing the eye over a surface covered with crystals a reflection from one face will often be accompanied by reflections from the corresponding face in each of the other crystals, showing that the crystals are throughout similar in their positions.

A section of unstable overburden that has hampered an all-dragline mining operations at Texasgulf's phosphate mine in eastern North Carolina, is being successfully removed by hydraulic dredging. Blocks are dredged, drained, and developed ahead of two large draglines that strip the remaining overburden and mine the 12-m section of ore. Dredging assistance has increased ore production, increased ore recoveries to a maximum, reduced unit costs, and has made it possible to reclaim mined-over land that would be left underwater mined by all dragline methods.

The principal mines of this region are 7 miles SE. from Gusa, and about 4 miles in a direct line from the seacoast. Gusa is a small town on the north coast of Mindanao, 4 miles east from Cagayan, the capital of the province of Misamis. The mines are reached by steep, narrow trails over ridges varying in altitude from 1100 to 1600 feet above sealevel. The whole region is covered with a thick growth of tall grass, except a few spots on the sides of some of the hills, where there are patches of timber and jungle.

Factorial design is a mathematical method of drawing valid conclusions from a series of tests made in a predetermined pattern. It is applied to flotation ore testing using, in this case, five variables, each varied twice, requiring a total of 32 tests. Representative conclusions are checked by repeat testing.

The purpose of this writing is to make available additional data, not previously published, on the extraction of silica from certain iron ores of Wisconsin and Minnesota and to discuss a possible method of processing. Results of investigations on the extraction of silica from low grade iron ores have been previously presented and discussed in detail in AIME Transactions.1,2 All of the ores investigated are essentially nonmagnetic and consist mainly of hematite, goethite and quartz. Gardner I?. Williams, authority on diamond mining, died at San Francisco, Cal., on Aug. 22, after an illness of nearly a year. Mr. Williams, who was in his eighty-first year, was born in Saginaw, Mich. He was graduated from the University of California in 1865, and afterward took a course at the Freiberg Mining Academy in Saxony. He was awarded the degree of LII. D. by the University of California in 1910, and Doctor of Engineering by the University of Michigan in 1917. Polychlorinated biphenyls were the basis of non-flammable askarel dielectric liquids wed in electrical equipment made between 1929 and 1978. Although PCBs were widely used in mine electrical equipment, the toxicity and environmental persistence of this chemical led Congress to ban its manufacture and use. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8838 summarizes the regulations imposed by the EPA on the use and disposal of PCBs, and describes the limitations of available substitutes. Recent changes in the regulations will impose additional requirements on the use of PCBs by the mining industry. This paper is an update of the material presented in the Bureau of Mines information circular.

In this investigation, a method to measure the basic characteristics of comminution has been developed. These characteristics are expressed by the three major comminution functions - crushing probability function, energy function, and breakage function. By testing three different minerals, quartz, calcite, and jasper, these three functions are determined. It is shown that the crushing qualities of a material can be valued by three constants which define the two first comminution functions. These two functions give the relation between particle size, probability of crushing, and the energy input.

THE Tralee preparation plant, owned and operated by the Semet-Solvay division of Allied Chemical and Dye Corp., is located on the Virginian rail- way, near Mullens, Wyoming County, W. Va., and the mine, which is in the Winding Gulf district, produces coal exclusively from Pocahontas No. 3 seam. The property, comprising 4900 acres, is leased from the Pocahontas Land Corp. Prior to 1930 four separate mines were operated in this tract, some having been started about 1916.

Reclaiming mined land in northern regions is less difficult than reclaiming semiarid lands. In 1972, the Usibelli coal mine near Healy, Alaska, initiated experimental plots to determine the proper grasses and amounts of fertilizer. The following spring, approximately 1600 acres of land disturbed by mining were seeded by low-flying aircraft. The reclamation project was evaluated by the State of Alaska and has been adjudged successful. The information gained is being used in reviewing prospecting permits and granting coal leases on state lands.

Due to its unique surface properties, magnesium oxide (MgO) is an excellent medium to filter asbestos and other suspended solids from water. MgO operates up to twice as long as a sand filter before backwashing is required while flow rate and filtrate clarity are as good or better with MgO.

More than 6000 resin-anchored bolts have been installed at the White Pine mine, and their performance has proven excellent in both pull tests and "beam" building. With its improved reliability, resin anchorage will permit a more scientific approach to the design of roof bolting systems, and this should ultimately result in both better support and reduced costs. The White Pine mine lies five miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County. Mich. The orebody occurs in gently dipping upper Keweenawan sediments midway between the Porcupine Mountains and the Bergland Hills, both of which are ranges of steeply dipping Keweenawan extrusives and intrusives.
