During the year of 1940, wildcat wells were drilled in 32 counties of Mississippi; 85 wells in all. These were scattered over the state from the most northern county to the southern counties and from the Mississippi River on the west to the Alabama line on the east. Yazoo County, with 19, received the largest number. The average depth of all the wells was 5333 ft. The shallowest well completed as a dry hole was in Yalobusha County, aban-doned at 1392 ft. in the Selma. The deepest well drilled was in Scott County, abandoned at 10,365 ft. in the Lower Cretaceous Paluxy. G. C. Grasty drilled the Kentucky Lumber Company No. I well, sec. 7, T. 10 S., R. 10 E., Itawamba County, to a depth of 3530 ft. and bottomed his hole in the Ordivician. Tinsley Oil Field.—In the Tinsley oil field 104 wells were completed as producers during 1940. Five producing sands have been logged with a total average thickness of I57 ft. of oil sand. An overland belt conveyor system installed at Simco-Peabody's mine near Coshocton, Ohio, is presently carrying coal three miles at an estimated cost of 4.499 per ton-mile. Installed by Link-Belt Co. in late 1961, this system transports coal from open pit and underground mining operations to the Conesville Power Plant. Simco-Peabody has mining operations over a considerable area just east of the Conesville Station. In 1960 the power plant completed plans to enlarge by adding a third boiler. As a result, Simco-Peabody was required to provide means to produce and handle more coal. The haulage equipment, which consisted of one 90-ton, five 60-ton and one 50-ton off- highway trucks, was too small to handle the increasing daily coal demands. Annual tonnage was approaching a million tons and in a few years would be well over that figure.

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in gyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics, and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05-20 g/L (0.002-0.7 oz per gal) SO2. The effects of iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation, and pH on SO2 oxidation are also described.

LIKE every present-day manufacturer, the brass foundryman is faced with the necessity of reducing the cost of his finished product without impairing its appearance or quality. He must use every economy that the progress of art and science puts at his disposal and should also be alert to profit by any peculiarity in his own situation or the nature of his product that may give him an exceptional advantage. Much can be accomplished by the adoption of labor-saving equipment and improved methods of melting, molding and handling. Control of pouring temperature, study of defective castings and their causes, laboratory control of molding sand and core mixtures, the use of less expensive alloys, all contribute to the desired end. Assuming that the composition of the alloy is already as inexpensive as the character of the casting will permit, still further savings can be made by the intelligent purchase and utilization of the metals needed to produce the desired analysis.

Harmon E. Keyes (Chemical & Metallurgical Engineer, Eagar, Ariz.)-Chemical dissolution of chalcocite by acidic ferric sulfate is well known. Resulting elemental sulfur may be oxidized to sulfuric acid by heated ferric sulfate. Laboratory tests at Southwest Experiment Station, USBM, Tucson, generally confirmed stoichiometric relations of 1 part Cu dissolved to 1.750 parts ferric iron reduced, using CP chemicals, dried ore samples, and apparatus cleaned with potable water. Recirculation with open-drainage percolation to increase copper in leaching solvent was followed successfully when appropriate, both in laboratory and Pinto Valley pilot tests. Before 1924 attempts to produce ferric sulfate by aerating ferrous sulfate solution were known. Initial oxidation was satisfactory, but rate slowed below practicality as oxidation progressed and acidity increased. Also, due to hydrolysis of ferric sulfate, a ferric precipitate of hydroxide and basic sulfate resulted. Both laboratory and pilot plant tests gave similar results, regardless of whether CP ferrous sulfate or scrap iron cementation discard solution was used. I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to an interesting experiment, which may turn out to be an indication of a valuable improvement in the manufacture of steel. As the members are aware, the addition of ordinary spiegeleisen, in the open hearth or Bessemer converter, to a bath of decarbonized iron, has a twofold object,-the recarbonization of the bath to a desired degree, and the remedy of the red shortness otherwise found to be inevitable in the final product. This red shortness is ascribed to the presence of oxide of iron in the molten metal ; and it is supposed that the manganese of the spiegeleisen, uniting with the oxygen of such oxide, carries it into the slag. At the same time there is a small percentage of the manganese usually left in the cast steel, probably to the improvement of its quality. Whatever be the true explanation the effect of the manganese is acknowledged to be not only beneficial, but necessary. But the use of spiegeleisen containing high percentages of carbon limits the quantity that can be introduced, because the carbon must be limited if soft steel is desired. This inconvenience becomes so serious as to prevent the use of ordinary spiegeleisen in the manufacture of steel containing more than, say two-tenths per cent. of phosphorus; since the quality of the steel can be made tolerable only by reducing its contents of carbon in proportion as the

The Denison orebody, located on the north limb of a syncline, rests at depths of 800 ft in the northern end of the property to 3000 ft at the southern end, and has a composite dip of 19º, varying locally from 0º to 45º. It is composed essentially of two pyritized conglomerate beds separated by a varying thickness of quartzite. The thickness of the upper conglomerate reef of the main ore zone varies from 2 to 15 ft while the lower reef is from 2 to 12 ft. Mining, whether carried out over the entire section of the reefs and quartzite or by selective mining of the reefs, is accomplished by room and pillar methods, with an initial 67% extraction on the advance towards the property boundaries. The underground ore handling requirement in such an orebody has become one of the most challenging problems in mining.

McDermitt mine is located southwest of McDermitt, Nev., ½ mile north of the old Cordero mine. Geologic structure of the district is that of a Miocene age collapse-type caldera in a region of Basin and Range normal faulting. The McDermitt ore body possess a tabular, gently dipping configuration within 150 ft of the surface over an area 2200 x 2500 ft. Indicated ore reserves are 3 million tons at 10 lb Hg per ton. The ore zone averages 20 ft in thickness and consists of cinnabar (HgS) and corderoite (Hg3S2Cl2) deposited parallel to bedding in argillized Miocene age tuffaceous lacustrine sediments. The ore body is localized above a silicious sinter-silicified lake-bed breccia. This "opalite" breccia unit possesses a gently dipping, apronlike configuration, striking northeast, parallel the trend of the Cordero deposit, and thinning to the north and northwest.

Primary amines are strong collectors of apatite and they can selectively float sedimentary phosphates from calcareous ores. However, secondary and tertiary amines and trimethyl ammonium salts are ineffective. Kerosene reduces the collector requirements became hydrocarbon is co-adsorbed along with the amine on the mineral surface. The heats of reaction of aminium ions with such anions as phosphate, carbonate, and sulfate were measured in a microcalorimeter. They are discmsed in terms of the solubility of the precipitates formed and their relationship with the adsorption mechanism of primary amines on phosphate minerab. Experimental evidence supports a view that primary amines are adsorbed through chemical interaction between the aminium and phosphate ions at the mineral surface.

Coal companies in the anthracite region are studying various methods of mining, seeking one that will shorten considerably the life of the gangway and thus decrease the maintenance charges. In steep pitching measures, the maintenance charges of the gangways are high because of the cost of replacing timbers and cleaning up falls. Therefore, if the length of the gangways can be decreased and the mining made more concentrated, the life of the coal gangways will be decreased and the maintenance charges per ton of coal produced will be smaller. The practice in the anthracite region is to drive long coal gangways and to work the breasts as the gangway from which they were driven is advanced. In many cases these gangways are from 4000 to 6000 ft. in length; and some are even longer. As these must be maintained not only until they have reached their limit but until second mining begins (which may be some years later), the maintenance charges are high. If the gangway is allowed to close, when the time comes to remove the pillars the cost of re-opening it may be as expensive as the original driving cost. The Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Co., at its Wanamie Colliery at Wanamie, Pa., has been using a system of mining that, as far as the writer knows, is not used in any other place in the anthracite fields. The measurement of temperatures in exploratory drill holes yields information on regional and local geothermal gradients and mean surface temperatures. This data may be beneficial to the mining geologist interested in the occurrence and oxidation of metallic sulfide minerals or to the mining engineer interested in subsurface temperatures or water movement. Additionally, the estimation of mean surface temperatures by the projection of thermal gradients to the ground surface provides data on which to evaluate infrared imagery as an exploration tool. Temperature measurements in 30 diamond drill holes in the Silver Bell mining district of Arizona show that a regional geothermal gradient of 2.45°C per 100 m increases to 3.03°C per 100 m near the ground surface. It is also found that an anomaly in the mean annual surface temperature of 0.5°C is associated with the shallow occurrence of disseminated sulfides. Changes in the geothermal gradient due to topography, water circulation, and formation changes also occur.

The effect of temperature and orientation on the plastic behaviour of an impure titaniferous magnetite from Palabora (South Africa) has been investigated. Prismatic specimens were axially compressed along [001], [110] and [111]. The strain rate was about 3.10-6 s-1. Trace analyses of glide lines revealed a plastic anisotropy due to glide on several non-equivalent crystallographic planes. At 200 °C {111}<112> twinning, {111}<110> slip and {100}<011> slip have been operative. At 400 °C {111}<110> slip and {100}<011> slip are primary glide modes. {110}<110> slip seems to be a secondary glide mode in the [001] specimens at 400 °C. {III}<112> twin glide generates isolated sharp lamellae. {111}<110> slip produces smooth surface striae. {100}<011> slip is characterized by coarse and partially wavy slip bands. {I10}<110> slip displays faint remarkably equidistant glide lines. The critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) decrease with rise of temperature. The CRSS ratio of slip on [100) to slip on {lll} increases from 1.1 at 200 °C to 1.4 at 400 °C giving rise to a distinct flow anisotropy of the magnetite at 400 °C.

THE Magma copper vein trends east-west, dips 70° south, and cuts through a 6000-ft thickness of limestones, quartzites, shale, diabase, and schist. The vein is itself a fault with -a horizontal offset of 500 ft on the formation contacts in the two walls. There are two principal faults of large displacement and numerous smaller steep and flat faults that complicate the prediction of ore occurrence. A study of the geology, its systematic recording to facilitate ready reference, and graphic methods of interpretation of mineralization have aided the exploration, development, and mining of the ore. In making predictions of the distribution of mineable ore bodies and their shape in critical areas, studies are made of "mineralization contours" and "mineralization trends," which are developed on a longitudinal section of the vein from variations in the concentration of the combined base metal content as shown by assays of available openings in the mine.

At present, in Japan, the application of in-place leaching technique to the mined-out stopes has been carried out at two copper mines in a comparatively large scale. These mines are the Kosaka mine and the Tsuchihata mine, both are situated in the north-east district of Japan. At first, the author would like to tell about the in-place leaching operations and their results at these two mines. Then, the problems involved in the application of in-place leaching technique to the Japanese metal mines and the possibility of the future development of this technique in Japan are referred, too. Next, as to the research works, the author would like to explain briefly about some of the important results obtained in the recent studies on in-place leaching as well as on bacterial leaching in Japan.

Sylvia Whitehead (Petrologist, The Broken Hill Propriety Co. Ltd., Melbourne, Australia) — Examination of thin sections of jaspilites from numerous banded iron formations in Australia has revealed no evidence to suggest that silicate minerals have formed by reaction between magnetite and silica. Textural relations indicate that part of the magnetite crystallized very early in the history of the rocks, probably during diagenesis, and remained stable under conditions of metamorphism altering only to hematite or limonite under conditions of oxidation and weathering. Many jaspilites also contain later magnetite which is almost certainly of metamorphic origin. Wherever magnetite is present in quartz rich bands containing little or no silicate or carbonate, it is very fine grained and occurs generally as isolated, well formed octahedral crystals or as small crystalline aggregates. These show no evidence of corrosion or reaction with the quartz even in rocks where adjacent bands contain silicate minerals of moderate to high metamorphic grade. THAT Colorado was producing oil and gas before the fields of the Mid-Continent were discovered is a fact too frequently overlooked. As early as 1862, oil was obtained in the Florence district (see Fig. 1) from seepages and shallow holes. The first well that could be regarded Fig. 1. as being truly commercial was drilled in this field in 1876. The field is now producing 100,000 bbl. per year, and is credited with a total production of approximately 11,000,000 bbl. The small field near Boulder, Boulder County, was opened in 1901; production has now practically ceased but the field is credited" with a total production of 610,000 bbl. IN the summer and fall of 1875, the author was present during a short smelting campaign at the Hall Valley works, and having had occasion to make a number of chemical analyses of the ores, fuel, and fluxes, deems that the results of the same, and also an account of the smelting operations, may be found of interest to members of the Institute. The mines and reduction works of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company (limited) are situated at Hall Valley, Park County, Colorado. The smelting works are located about half way from the mouth to the head of the above-named valley, and the mines high up on the mountains, near its head. THE purpose of this note is to indicate the locations and sizes of various interstitial holes in the orthorhombic uranium lattice based on a hard-sphere model. First, plane configurations of three and four atoms will be examined, and then the true interstices surrounded by four atoms in space and by five atoms in space will be obtained. The data and notation contained in a report by Tucker&apos; will be used. Plane Configurations Fig. 1 presents the orthorhombic uranium lattice made of spheres touching at the closest interatomic distance. The three light-colored spheres in the ab plane are illustrative of the first type of configuration to be examined. If one edge of the unit cell is taken as the origin, the three atoms can be represented by the vectors [Oi + Oj + Ok], [ai + Oj + Ok] and [(a/2)i + (b/2)j + Ok] where i, j, and k are respectively parallel to a, b, and c. In the future, this notation will be shortened to [000], [a00] and [a/2 b/2 0], respectively. A vector R = [r s t] de-scribes the position of the hole surrounded by the atoms. THE Russellton preparation plant of Republic Steel Corp., located north of Pittsburgh, Pa., prepares 3 1/2x0-in. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is ¼x0-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed. The 3½xY4-in. washed coal, the cone product, is dewatered and desanded by a double-deck Parrish-type shaking screen 46 ft long and 7 ft wide. The 1¼x¼-in. portion is further dewatered by two 4x12-ft single-deck vibrating screens. The ¼x0-in. washed coal from the tables is distributed to three 54x70 in. Bird centrifuges. The dewatered centrifuge product is combined with the product of the de-watering screens prior to loading into railroad cars. During the early part of 1951 complaints were received from officials at Republic&apos;s coke ovens concerning the moisture content of Russellton washed coal.
