The effect of a surfactant, designated Syntex, on the wetting and spreading of hydrocarbon oil on molybdenite surfaces (faces) has been investigated experimentally through measurements of zeta potentials and factorially designed flotation tests. These studies indicate that Syntex has a positive effect in increasing molybdenite recovery in the rougher flotation circuit at the Climax mill. The analysis of experimental data using DLVO theory shows that the controlling factor in determining the magnitude of the repulsive energy barrier preventing oil from wetting and spreading on the molybdenite faces is the MoS2 zeta potential and the vapor oil droplet size. The role of Syntex in this case seems to be related to the decrease and stabilization of MoS2 zeta potential by Syntex adsorption and also to the emulsifying action of Syntex on vapor oil to provide a more favorable oil particle size.

In classification of pulps bearing magnetized ferro-magnetic particles, depolarizing is of great importance. If size separation is to be effective, particles must be individual rather than in flocs. Depolarizing is also practiced in heavy medium separations in which ferrosilicon or magnetite is the medium. When particles of ferromagnetic material have been removed from a magnetic field, residual magnetism causes agglomeration. The term depolarizing refers to the operation of reducing or eliminating this residual magnetism and may thus be considered magnetic deflocculation. The terms demagnetizing and randomizing are also used.

The authors of T.P. 4179 have conducted a large number of experimental water floods, and the data are reported in a very clear manner. These data show significant variations of residual oil saturation with changes in wettability, interfacial tension, flooding rate, and oil-water viscosity ratio. Furthermore, some of the data obtained cover a range of variables not previously reported in the literature. It is our opinion that at least some of the observed variation in oil recovery can be obtained only in floods made under conditions identical with those used by the authors. There are other systems which may be said to have the same wettability, but which exhibit an entirely different qualitative dependence of oil recovery on the experimental variables. In this regard, we would like to direct attention to several items which we feel are not given sufficient consideration in the paper. The first of these items has to do with wetting equilibrium. A survey of the current literature will reveal that little is known, and even less is understood, about wetting equilibrium. This is particularly true of the relation between contact angle measurements made under static conditions, and the wettability existing under the dynamic conditions of floods carried out at relatively high rates. We feel that this is a very important consideration, particularly in the floods the authors performed under what they consider to be "water-wet" conditions. It is our opinion that wetting equilibrium did not exist in these floods, except possibly at the very lowest rates. This opinion is in part based on some flooding tests we have made which are very similar to some of those described by the authors. These floods were made in unconsolidated cores, 6 in. long and 13/4 in. in diameter, made up of carefully graded glass spheres of the approximate size of the sand grains used in the subject paper. The cores were mounted vertically, and distilled water was used to displace a refined oil equivalent to the authors Soltrol C. The glass spheres had previously been carefully cleaned so that they were strongly wet by the water. The floods were made with and without an interstitial water saturation. When interstitial water was present, the solid surfaces were mostly covered with water prior to injecting the flooding phase. Consequently, a condition very near wetting equilibrium existed throughout the flood. The data in Fig. A show that under these eircumstances, rate had no influence on residual oil at flood-out, over the range of rates studied. On the other hand, in the absence of interstitial water, the surfaces are all covered with oil before the displacement. To achieve wetting equilibrium the injected water must displace the oil from the surfaces themselves. This is not a fast process. Therefore, the effective dynamic wetting condition in floods of this type must depend upon the flooding rate. When the flood rate is very low, compared to the rate at which wetting equilibrium is attained, the residual oil saturation at flood-out is essentially the same as the residual obtained when interstitial water is present. This is shown in Fig. A, and occurs because the dynamic wetting conditions are the same in both cases. However, at moderately high flooding rates, the rate has an important bearing on the amount of oil recovered because in this case the attainment of surface equilibrium is the slow step. We believe that, in the absence of an interstitial water saturation, oil recovery varies with rate because of the reasonably slow approach to wetting equilibrium which occurs during the displacement. In fact, as the rate is increased, the oil recovery performance indicates the core is becoming progressively less water-wet. At the highest rate there is even considerable simultaneous production of oil and water after breakthrough. IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un- roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence.

IN 1900, Elmore found that if an acidulated pulp was stirred up with an oil which was relatively insoluble in and lighter than water, and the mixture was al-lowed to stratify, much of the sulfide would be found hanging to the lower surface of the floating body of oil and could be skimmed off or overflowed with it. The action of the flotation agent here is two-fold, first to select the sulfide from the gangue-what to-day is called collection-and second, to buoy the col-lected sulfide away from the gangue. The action in collecting is illustrated by Fig. 1, which contrasts the behavior of drops of oil brought, under water, to the surfaces of gangue and sulfide particles, respectively. The oil displaces water from the surface of the sulfide; the water displaces oil from the gangue surface. If, instead of considering the solid particles the fixed parts of the system of oil, water and solids, we consider the oil and water fixed and the solids pre-sented to the surface of contact, the condition will be as shown in Fig. 2 ; the sulfide tends to be drawn into the interface and the gangue to be excluded. The sul-fide particles are held in the oil-water surface by the tension of this surface. The buoyant effect is supplied by the oil droplets in bringing the sulfides to the water surface, but not in holding them there.

One phase of Bureau of Mines research deals with reduction of primly respirable dust generated by bit cutting action at a coal seam face. This paper presents a summary of coal cutting technology addressing this problem. All aspects of the cutting system affecting miner health and safety are discussed. Cutting design concepts are considered that minimize dust generation, energy used, and Ignitions, while maintaining production. With present equipment, an operator can maintain production and minimize dust energy and conditions by cutting at maximum depth (maximum sumping or advance rate) at all times, at minimum rpm with fewest possible bits, and with lowest possible included bit tip angle, i.e., minimum bit wear.

Cutter roof failure is a specific type of ground control problem which frequently results in massive roof failure. It is a common occurrence in coal mines of the Northern Appalachian Coal Basin, causing delays in production and posing a safety hazard to mine personnel. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the causes of cutter roof failure to gain a basis from which to prevent its occurrence and to support such roof when failure does occur. Research conducted in a coal mine of central Pennsylvania has revealed a correlation between the occurrence of clastic dikes and formation of cutter roof failure. In-mine mapping of ground conditions showed an increase in roof failure in areas of high frequencies of clastic dikes. Rock pressure monitoring around clastic dikes registered the greatest amount of roof loading near the intersection of dikes with the rib. Load cells measuring horizontal pressure changes in the roof indicated that the greatest pressure changes were occurring perpendicular to entry headings when clastic dikes were present. Analysis of rock pressure monitoring shows that the roof behaved as two cantilever beams when severed by a clastic dike. Additional roof supports such as trusses and cribbing were found to effectively support the roof in areas of clastic dikes and prevent cutter roof failure. However, these methods were only successful when employed shortly after mining.

Very recently there has been a quickening of research effort in the field of silicate mineral flotation, particularly as regards the flotation of beryl.' These studies have already contributed much to the understanding of both anionic and cat-ionic flotation of silicates. Of particular interest concerning anionic flotation has been the work done on heavy metal activation of silicates by M. C. Fuerstenau and co-workers.4,7 In addition. in the paper by Fuerstenau, Rice, Somasundaran and Fuerstenau7 attention was paid to low pH anionic flotation of beryl in the absence of activators. The geological and geochemical characteristics of the Japanese iodine-rich brines are outlined. The iodine-rich brine in Japan is primary in its origin and its occurrence is limited in the younger marine sediments. The iodine-rich subsurface water is saturated or over- saturated by natural gas, but the water saturated by natural gas is not always rich in iodine. The iodide and bromide contents decrease with time. The bromide content decreases much more rapidly than that of iodide. It should be emphasized that the genetic environment of the Japanese type of dissolved gas and iodine deposit is not peculiar to the Japanese islands.

The number of trucks required to perform a certain task is a function of the productive capability of one independent truck and the total tonnage required. Hourly productive capability of one truck is the product of trips, or cycles, per operating hour and effective payload. One cycle is made up of load, dump, and travel time, the sum of which comprises theoretical cycle time. This time is then derated by a productivity factor, giving an average effective cycle time which is used to calculate the number of cycles per hour. Rated payload is the truck's designed tonnage, while effective payload is the average amount that is actually carried. Manufacturers, particularly of the larger trucks, produce various body sizes designed to carry materials of different densities. However, it is not always possible to carry the rated payload because the material might be lighter than expected, a body of the required size cannot be produced, or because of spillage on particularly steep grades.

While coal was undoubtedly seen by the early travellers within the state, the first mention of it was in the late 1820's when hunters put some stones from a creek bed under the logs of a large camp fire, and awoke later to find the stones on fire. The stream was later named Coal Branch; the location was at the eastern side of the present Bibbs County.1 In the Louisville Daily Journal of Feb. 11, 1831, the following short editorial note appeared: "Tuscaloosa Coal.-A small quantity of this article has reached Mobile, and has been tried in the office of the Patriot; it is said to be an excellent article. We invite such of our friends as desire economy in fuel, love a cheerful and constant fire, or would eschew a smoky room, to call and examine." On a geological map published in 1832, the "Carboniferous group" is shown and a spot near Tuscaloosa indicated as showing bituminous coal,2 and this is again alluded to in Morton's Synopsis, 1834. A brief description of the coal fields in the state in 1834 said that in winter coal was brought down the. Black Warrior River to Mobile and sold there at the same price as Liverpool coal, $1.00 to $1.50 per barrel, ($10 to $15 per ton) and that the writer was using it in his laboratory.3 At that time it was in local use by smiths and an iron foundry was using it in Shelby County.4 In 1836 some coal was mined in the Birmingham district, chiefly in the northern portion of the Coosa basin, where it was loaded on barges and taken down the Coosa Rivers.5 "William Whitman dug coal out of Wolf Creek (Walker County) in 1837," and in the same county, in 1839, the first coal shaft in the state, was sunk. This was near the mouth of Lost Creek and was known as Frierson's Shaft. It was operated by a hand windlass, using two tubs.1

This article is not presented as a treatise on tin mines and mining in Bolivia. It deals primarily with the tin situation, and but fragmentary information is given regarding individual properties, generalizations being necessary in so short an article. Data on general subjects related to tin mining in Bolivia are necessarily abbreviated and very incomplete. It is believed that the references to be found in this article will help those interested to a more thorough under-' standing of the general conditions extant in Bolivia. Bolivia produces from one-fifth to one-fourth of the world's supply of tin. The United States consumes about one-half of the world's supply and produces practically none. Tin ore is not reduced in the United States. These facts are not generally appreciated by American mining men. Many conflicting data have been published regarding tin in Bolivia. The Transactions of the Institute contain practically no mention of this subject.1 I have made a study of mines and mining conditions in the west coast republics of South America and have been particularly impressed by the possibilities of the Bolivian field.2 In consequence the thought seems justified that the present meeting would, present a fitting occasion to bring the tin situation in Bolivia to the attention of American mining men.

MOST commercial electrostatic separators utilize the electrical property of conductivity, but although based on the same principles, they are constructed in a variety of forms, a common one being the simple roll type. Some information obtained during an investigation of that type of separator, and which indirectly is applicable to other types, is presented here. NUMERICAL RELATIONSHIP In Fig. I material discharged from hopper 6 is fed onto grounded rotating roll 2. Electrode 3 is at a high electrical potential with respect to roll 2, and any conductive particle in contact with roll 2 therefore acquires an electrical charge of such polarity that, when present in the electrical field, the force on it is in the direction of electrode 3. A detailed description of the charging by conductance as utilized in electrostatic separators may be found in a previous publication.1 As a result of this force, the path of the projected particle is changed in increasing amounts in the direction toward region C as the magnitude of the charge is increased. With the dividing edge 4 the projected particles may be divided into two fractions -those in region C designated as "deflected" or " deflectant " and those in region B designated as "residue." [ ] When material is passed over the roll only once, a complete separation is seldom obtained, therefore most commercial separators contain several roll-separator units in series, and some practical machines use as many as 12. In this paper a "pass" means the passage of material over a single-roll unit. The procedure is to repass either residue B with a low potential on electrode 3 or deflectant C with a high potential on 3. Most electrostatic separations follow a flowsheet of roughing and cleaning either the concentrate or the tailing, on both. The emission of firedamp from the strata surrounding active workings of longwall coal faces normally follows a cyclic pattern associated with the mining operations being carried out on the face. Mining a coal seam disturbs the uniform distribution of overburden weight such that the working is enveloped by a region of high stress, both above and below the seam, advancing with the coal face. There is a decrease in stress as the strata is relaxed following the passage of the face (1). The paper describes experimental results obtained during the initial investigations of a study intended to examine the permeability of samples of coal measure strata under various triaxial stress conditions. Several investigators have studied the effect of stress on the permeability of rock, usually in the field of oil reservoir engineering. Two general lines of approach are evident. One used by among others Fatt and Davies (2), McLatchie et a1 (31, Brace et al (4) and Gunther (5) was to subject a rock sample to hydrostatic pressure. Gas or water would be passed through a sealed core mounted inside a high pressure hydraulic bomb. The second approach, favoured by Wilhelmi and Somerton (6) and also by Gray et a1 (7) was to employ a so-called 'triaxial' state of stress. Here radial confining pressure and axial stress are applied independently. The permeability is measured in the direction of the axial load. With the exception of Gunther who tested coals and Brace et a1 who tested a granite, the rocks used have been sandstones with permeabilities generally appreciably higher than British coal measure rocks.

INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of lead and zinc sulfides, often accompanied by barite and fluorite, occur in carbonate host rocks throughout central and eastern United States. So similar are the deposits in broad general characteristics that they long have been classified as Mississippi Valley type. They differ widely, however, in details such as metal ratios, age of host rock, type of ore-bearing structure, and probable time of mineralization. The theories developed to explain the source and transport of the metals are many and are known to all. The deposits have been termed telethermal on the basis of their presumably shallow occurrence and the attempt to relate the metals to the classic hydro- thermal sequence. 1t is now recognized that deposits of this type can occur at any depth; the only depth limitation is thickness of the sedimentary section. Ideas on the source of the metals also have changed, A rapidly growing body of evidence suggests that the metals were brought by concentrated brines from nearby sedimentary basins. The hypothesis preferred today by many geologists postulates that the metals were deposited during the course of normal sedimentation in depositional basins of miogeosynclinal or orthogeosynclinal type. At some time after deposition of the sediments, the metals were carried out of the basins by migrating brines; the brines moved laterally and upward into structurally high areas; they entered any reservoir-like structure, either primary or secondary in origin, that happened to be available; in this reservoir, possibly in a sulfur-rich environment, the metals were precipitated as ore minerals.

Gowen, who addressed the Institute as follows: Mr. President and Gentlemen : It has been made my pleasant duty to welcome you to the city of Philadelphia, but in so doing I shrink, with some natural reluctance, from appearing before an audience so much better fitted than I am to cope with the subjects which are usually presented to your association, and I can assure you that no trembling neophyte, first venturing within the groves of the Academy, or walking, with sacred reverence, in the gardens of Plato, felt more natural dread at the consequence of his own temerity than I do in appearing before an audience composed of geutlenlen belonging to a scientific society of which I am but too sensible that until now I have been a member only in name. In olden times, upon entering a temple sacred to the worship of any deity, it was customary to lay some offering upon the altar, and, in following this custom, it will be my duty, before entering upon the more pleasant part of the task which is assigned me, to call your attention to a subject with which I have been somewhat familiar, and which is entirely within the scope of your investigations, in the belief that I may throw out some hints or some suggestions of a process that may be fully developed by some of you, and eventually lead to the introduction of that which may be of service to the human race.
