INTRODUCTION MacMillan Tungsten is located in northwestern Canada on the border of Yukon and Northwest Territories at a latitude of 63º17' and altitude of 1800 m above sea level. The deposit lies within the Selwyn Mountains 10 km from the Canol Road. It is 660 km by road from Whitehorse, Yukon, and 1325 km by air from Vancouver, British Columbia. MacMil lan Tungsten is a contact metasomatic deposit in gently dipping Lower Paleozoic limestone and limestone breccia adjacent to a Cretaceous quartz monzonite stock. Four tabular tungsten skarn horizons contain total geological reserves of 30 million tons grading 0.9% WO3. DISCOVERY AND HISTORY J.F. Allan, a former AMAX geologist, located mineral claims in September, 1962, to cover the source of scheelite-bearing skarn float found in the headwaters of Cirque Lake Valley. Exploration work on the property conducted mainly between 1968 and 1973, includes geological mapping, 10,500 m of diamond drilling in 73 holes, and 735 m of underground exploration. Mil 1 tests were carried out on a 300 ton bulk sample obtained underground. Preliminary feasibility studies, collection of weather data and a variety of environment studies have been carried out since 1973. Although no production date has been set MacMillan Tungsten will undoubtedly be a major tungsten producer.

Shortly after production was begun at the Duval Sierrita concentrator in February 1970, it became evident that difficulties would be experienced in reaching the designed operating level of 72,000 stpd. Since the major restrictions to production resided in the reduction crushing system, a comprehensive program was initiated to evaluate and optimize all crusher parameters affecting production. Positive relationships were established between production rate and crusher power draught, mantle support pressure, crusher setting, and crusher throw. Other parameters evaluated were the effects of feed distribution, crusher speed, mantle and concave configuration, choke feeding, and ore type. In order to obtain maximum production, it was also imperative that the mechanical integrity of the crushers be improved. Therefore, redesign of nearly the entire crusher assemblage, including such items as the top shell, bushings, and the mantle hydraulic support system, was required. In addition, automatic control stategies were evaluated and detailed operating guidelines were established. As a result of this extensive crusher examination, the limitation on plant throughput has been shifted to the grinding section, and a monthly average production level of 86,000 stpd is currently achieved. Programs under current evaluation are aimed at further increasing capacity to exceed 90,000 stpd.

THE need for coordinated effort on public problem by engineers has long been felt. Early in June there will assemble in Washington a conference composed of delegates from all the engineering organizations in the country. The call for this conference is issued by the Joint Conference , Committee of the four national societies as the completion of its work on the organization of a congress composed of delegates representing all the engineering organizations of the United States. The plan for this confederation was presented at a joint meeting of the administrative boards of the national founder societies on Jan. 23, 1920; and was unanimously approved in principle by that meeting. The work of the committee since that date has consisted in drafting a constitution of the organization to be presented at the conference for discussion and, after such amendments as may be adopted, acceptance.

Part I. Developing BY GEORGE M. FOWL INTRODUCTION The Tri-State district comprises an area of about 2000 square miles in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas, and north [ ] eastern Oklahoma. The part that is in and contiguous to Missouri is still sometimes designated as the Joplin district (Fig. I). EARLY OPERATIONS Mining operations in what is now the Tri-State district date from about 1848 and have been continuous to the present. Apparently the first discoveries of ore were made about the same time near the present sites of Joplin, Oronogo, and Granby. Lead minerals were found at grass roots, probably in shattered rock in shallow excavations, then these minerals were followed in shear zones to deeper horizons. The mining of zinc followed. Before 1874, zinc ore was worthless and discarded as waste. According to published records, the total production of lead to that date was 49,000 tons of metal from 70,000 tons of concentrates. This study presents results of investigations in a small model of segregation in discharged fill slurry, the quantity of solids escaping in the drain liquid, and the relationship of solids to slurry concentration and discharge rate. Compressibilities of fine fill material, in dry and wet states and individual size fractions, are compared. Two terms are frequently used in describing the hydraulic placement of fill material underground: hydraulic stowing is mostly associated with the underground flushing of coarse-sized fill material, such as coal washery refuse; while hydraulic backfilling refers to placement of small-sized fill material, e.g., sand or classified mill tailings, mainly in metal mines. Characteristically, in backfilling, only a few hours may elapse between the time the material is hoisted as ore and redeposited as fill underground. Hydraulic filling was first used about 100 years ago to control subsidence in coal mines. It was subsequently adopted in many mining operations all over the world, but its basic concepts have never been adequately studied and analyzed. This is not surprising, when one considers the number of variables involved in the hydraulic backfilling operation. Recently, much work has been done on the problems of transportation of slurries in pipes. Comparatively less research work has been done concerning the physical properties of fill material (compressibility, cementation, permeability, etc.). Very little work has been done on the problems of fill placing, distribution, and segregation of fill material discharged in the mine void. It is the purpose of this paper to explore two of the basic, lesser known aspects of filling: segregation and compressibility in discharged fill slurry. Difficulties in observing the behavior of hydraulic fill slurry during the pouring operation underground, and insufficient knowledge to conduct any kind of meaningful theoretical analysis, suggest experimental model studies. The tests described in the following sections were conducted in the Rock Mechanics Laboratory of the Department of Mining at Penn State.

THE object of this work was to obtain and correlate information on effect of internal stress in variously drawn tubes on several properties. Also, a simple approximate method of comparing types of stress distribution in such variously drawn tubes was sought. There is also included some work on comparison of single and polycrystalline materials and effect of different types of operation and preferred orientation. PREPARATION OF MATERIAL A series of tubes was drawn to study the effect of the type and degree of final reduction on various physical properties and the approximate distribution of stress intensity across the tube wall. The material used all came from a single heat of 70-30 brass melted in a regular production Ajax-Wyatt induction furnace. The analysis of the metal as cast was: copper, 70.36 per cent; lead, 0.04; iron, 0.02; zinc, balance. The material was cast in "shells" with 4 in. outside diameter and 3/4 in. wall thickness. It was drawn part way down according to the usual standard mill schedule and then by suitable individual schedules to finish by a variety of types and degrees of drawing to the same final cases in every instance; namely, 0.750 in. outside diameter by 0.080 in. wall thickness. The exact final draws, together with the percentage area reductions, diameter reductions and gage reductions are given in Table 1.

IT HAS been generally recognized that, owing to the extreme friability of, galena, fine grinding has a tendency to cause excessive sliming of the mineral, so operators of lead mills have attempted to avoid this condition by commencing concentration at as coarse sizes as any mineral is freed. Jigging has been the basis of the milling process, making a clean coarse concentrate and a large amount of tailing, which was considered sufficiently low-grade to be rejected. However, developments and improvements in concentration processes are everywhere changing the low-grade tailing of yesterday into material worth retreating today. Investigations of the work of the Hancock jig on the Bonne Terre ore- have shown that the best results to be expected will give a tailing assaying 0.75 per cent. lead; the average over all conditions and grades of ore will be between .0.80 and 0.90 per cent. By crushing the jig tailings in ball-mills and retreating by tables and flotation, a tailing of considerably lower grade can be made; the problem then becomes an economic one of increased crushing costs versus higher recovery. In considering the entire elimination of jigging, the increased smelting charges; due to a greater amount of slime galena will be counterbalanced by the lower operating cost, in-creased recovery, and the many advantages of a simpler flow sheet. In developing these problems in the Bonne Terre mill of the' St. Joseph Lead Co., a long series of tests has been carried out covering every stage of crushing and concentration, and a large number of possible flow sheets were considered and tried. Only the final results and a few comparisons will be given here. At the same time, a careful and detailed cost-keeping system has enabled us to compare milling costs with the various flow sheets, and to calculate the economics of the problem' with great accuracy. .

To a very large extent the quality of a mild steel ingot is determined by the manner in which it is poured into the ingot mold and its behavior during the first few minutes after it has been poured. The formation of the solid rim of metal around the periphery of the mold, the effervescent action of the liquid steel within this solidified rim and the upward or downward movement of the metal level are indications of what is going on beneath the surface of the liquid metal, especially at the interface at which solidification occurs. Observation of this "rimming action" enables an experienced observer to predict the thickness of the sound skin of the ingot and the location and extent of cavities or "blowholes" caused by entrapment of gases. The control of rimming action at the hands of a skillful steel pourer is a vital part of the control of quality in mild steel sheet, and the behavior of the liquid steel during the rimming period is a useful criterion of the melting and refining practices employed in the open hearth. The behavior of rimming steel during solidification depends primarily upon the evolution of gases from the molten metal and it is therefore a problem of considerable interest to determine the nature and amount of the gases evolved. A number of attempts to determine either the amount or the analysis of the, evolved gases have been reported. Klinger,1 in 1925, analyzed the gases extracted from rimming, semikilled and killed steel ingots and found that the chief constituent of the rimming gas was carbon monoxide. The relatively large amounts of nitrogen reported in his first few samples may have been due to incomplete removal of air from the gas-collecting mechanism. McKune2 reported similar studies of rimming ingots from which surprisingly large proportions of nitrogen and hydrogen were evolved. Ameen and Willners3 determined both the amount and composition of gases extracted from unkilled ingots with the aid of diminished pressure. Their ingots weighed only 80 kg.
