THE reduction of the firing of clay wares to a science has been one of the most difficult problems of modern ceramic engineering. The number of factors involved in the treatment of these wares has been such a complicated composite of the chemical and the physical properties that, according to the old practice, results depended rather on the art of the operator than on any scientific data available. The combined influence of the chemical and physical properties of clay minerals renders it difficult to apply the data obtained in one operation to the forecasting of details to be applied in another. In maturing clay-ware bodies by the application of heat, the chemical reactions involved are, in general, incomplete. The object frequently is to secure a certain physical quality, as density, color, or strength, rather than any particular chemical composition or development: This is more generally true of the so-called crude clay products. In the case of certain more high-grade wares, as the porcelains, it is necessary to reach the temperature required to bring about a certain molecular development or crystalline structure; but even here, time and temperature are at work and must be considered jointly. The conditions attending the firing of clay wares has led to the use of certain devices in the measurement of the progress of the firing process whereby the influence of the various burning factors on the clay composition under fire is indicated. In the simplest application of this practice, samples of the ware itself are so placed as to be drawn for observation at various intervals during the burn. Although the appearance is affected by the quick cooling treatment, by experience, this practice is successfully used, particularly in the brick industry. The settle of the setting of brick, as measured from the top of the kiln may also serve as a guide in the firing operation. A considerable interest in the subject of superlattices has been manifested by many papers and reviews that have recently appeared, both in physical and metallurgical publications. This interest is due largely to the apparent simplicity of the ordering process, which permits the explanation of many phenomena on the basis of elementary theory. Moreover, ordering may cause important changes in the physical properties of alloys. In this paper, we shall discuss the causes of superlattices in terms of simple properties of the elements that give rise to them, together with a series of experiments performed to test our conclusions. Evidence is presented that in some cases the process of ordering is more complex than might be supposed. While the different species of atoms are usually found in random positions in alloy lattices, in some cases unlike atoms tend to be nearest neighbors. Bethe's1 "order of neighbors" is a statistical measure of thib tendency. At suitable compositions it is possible for atoms in large regions to be regularly arranged, which causes superlattice lines to appear. in X-ray diffraction patterns. Bragg and Williams2 haw dealt with this "long-distance order" in their fundamental work 011 superlattices. The magnitude of the effect can be determined from the entropy of mixing, which is calculate from first principles. The tin-deposits of Durango, Mexico, have been ably described by Mr. W. R. Ingalls in a paper published in our Transactions in 1895.* While the occurrellces of tin-ore in other parts of the Republic are similar in many resperts to those in Durango, there are noteworthy local differences which, it is hoped, ma? lend interest to the present paper. The deposits examined by me in May, 1895, are found in the Serrania de Chacuaco, Municipality of Sain Alto, District of Sombrerete. The workings are situated in a range of mountains having a general northwest to southeast trend between Sombrerete and Fresnillo; the most northerly claim (La Desparranlada) being about six leagues southeast of the former town. El Refugio lies about four leagues to the southwest, and El Calabrote eight leagues to the west, of Fresnillo. The claims are from about 8425 to 8775 feet above sea-level, and from 1500 to 1800 feet above Sain Alto, the position of which town is marked in the map printed in Mr. Ingalls's paper. In order to reach the claims, one uses the carriage-road from Sain Alto to the small tin-colony of Las Cuevas; from the latter place to the mines there is only a rough mule-track. The mountain range consists of a rugged, weathered, gray granite rock, remarkable for large grains of quartz, and is flanked by masses of rhyolite and rhyolite-tuff of upper Tertiary age. The whole formation is broken up by narrow and steep willding arroyos and deep barrancas, mainly the result of denudation, and it appears to be a southeasterlj extension of the tin-bearing belt of rocks north of Durango City. The production of the Texas Panhandle1 up to Jan. 1, 1932, was slightly under 179,000,000 bbl., 90 per cent of which came from Hutchin-son and Gray counties. About 21,500,000 bbl. were produced during 1931. This was about 35 per cent less than the 1930 production and the smallest annual production since the first boom started seven years ago. The present daily production is slightly under 55,000 bbl., which is the production permitted under statewide curtailment. The assumed potential for the purpose of curtailment is 108,708 bbl. and the actual capacity of the wells is probably in the neighborhood of 75,000 barrels. The total initial production of the oil wells completed in 1931 was 40,714 bbl. from 117 wells or 347 bbl. per well as compared to a 511-bbl. average from the 304 oil wells drilled during the preceding year. Gray County led with 71 completions and a total initial production of 29,209 barrels. Completions Two hundred wells were completed in the Panhandle in 1931, as against 526 in 1930. Of the year's completions, 117 were oil wells, 77 produced gas, and but six were dry holes. Of the 3197 wells drilled in the Panhandle to date, 2944 have produced oil, gas, or both, making the ratio of dry holes to producers about 1:11.7. Ignoring the 64 dry holes drilled in nonproductive counties the ratio becomes 190:2944 or 1:15.5, which is somewhat more favorable than that obtained at the end of 1930. Of the oil wells completed 374 have been plugged. Although it is but five years since the peak of drilling operations more than one-fifth of the oil wells in Hutchinson County have been plugged. The fact that granite has been encountered by the drill by those in search of oil and gas in Kansas is becoming more and more a matter of interest, not only to the oil producer but to everyone directly and indirectly connected with the oil business. It is, therefore, time that someone should offer an explanation for its presence and form a definite opinion, based on all the data available, in regard to the effect it will have on the future prospects of the area affected as probable oil-and gas-producing territory. At present there seems to be no consensus of opinion. To the writer's knowledge, only one attempt has been made to explain ; by Erasmus Haworth, State Geologist of Kansas, in a paper entitled Bulletin Number Two on Crystalline Rocks in Kansas. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a theory for the presence of the granite, and to draw conclusions which will aid in determining the prospective oil and gas value of the area in question. In taking up this question it will be well to consider first the tests in which granite has been reported, with a general history of each. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the location of all wells described. The first well in which granite was reported was that drilled just south of Zeandale in section 27, township 10 south, range 9 east, by a local company which had taken up a block of leases in that vicinity. At a depth of 958 ft. (291.99 m.) granite was encountered. Drilling was continued to a depth of 1093 ft. (333 m.) in the same formation, at which depth the hole was abandoned. Another well was started 1 mile east of the first well and the same rock was found at a depth of 945 ft. (288 m.). Drilling was continued to a depth of 1200 ft. (365.76 m.) with the bit in the same formation. Samples of the drill cuttings have been examined and they are undoubtedly crushed granite. The next well in which granite was found was that drilled by DeLaat and Shepard, independent wildcat operators, in section 34, township 19 south, range 7 east, near the town of Elmdale. Granite was struck at 1707 ft. (520 m.) and the hole was abandoned in the same formation at 2525 ft. (769 m.). A metallographic study of solute segregation produced during controlled solidification of Sn-Pb alloys has previously been reported.' It was found that the growth conditions which produced well-developed cellular substructures led to severe segregation, and even at solute concentrations of 0.2 wt pct Pb regions of a lead-rich phase were formed at the junctions of cell boundaries (nodes). Similar sample preparation and etching techniques have now been applied to several tin alloys at more dilute concentrations. The crystals were solidified uni-directionally under less-severe growth conditions so that the predominant interface structure was composed of two-dimensional cells.* Binary alloys with lead, using 9.999 pct Sn as a solvent, and ternary alloys with lead and bismuth or lead and antimony, using zone-refined tin as a solvent, were examined. The liquid was decanted from the growing crystals in all cases to reveal the interface structure and ensure that two-dimensional cells were being formed. However, since interference may arise from a liquid layer that clings to the interface during decanting,3 an examination of the segregation pattern was always made behind the interface. In all cases, the structure within the bulk of a crystal at greater than 1 cm behind the decanted interface was substantially the same as that nearer the interface. Representative photomicrographs of the dilute Sn-Pb alloy are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Most observations are similar to those of the previous investigation. For example, the solute concentration at the cell walls is higher than in the intercellular regions; where cell boundaries meet, the segregation is enhanced; the macromosaic or stria-tion substructure and grain boundaries show enhanced segregation; there is also a depletion of solute at cell walls near a striation boundary, as Spittle et a1.4 have observed at decanted interfaces. This paper presents evidence of the general occurrence of methane in a large number of the coal fields of the United States and substantiates the apparent unnecessary differences in the ventilation requirements and codes in the various states, as was brought to the attention of the Committee on Mine Ventilation of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at its Pittsburgh meeting in October, 1925, by J. A. Garcia. The data in his report have been compiled from the files of the Gas Laboratory of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and represent samples collected throughout the various states and submitted for analysis by its engineers, also by mine operators and State mining departments, since 1911. Several thousand analyses were available but most of them were rejected because they represented abnormal conditions, undefined place of sampling, special investigations, or duplications in the same mine. Only those samples were included which, without reasonable doubt, were ascertained to fall within three major classes, namely, main return, air splits, and face and rooms of live workings. In the case of air splits, and face and room samples, only the one which contained the highest percentage of methane found in a given mine was taken. OCCURHENCE OF METHANE IN COAL MINES OF THE UNITED STATES Obviously it is not feasible to present the detailed analytical data here and accordingly these data have been compiled into groups in a manner which it was thought would bring out clearly their significance. These are shown in Table 1 which includes the analyses of 310 samples of return air of approximately the same number of coal mines in 19 states. Because of changes in ownership and names the exact number could not be ascertained. The table also includes 337 samples from air splits and 263 from the face and rooms of some of the same mines represented by return air samples and from other mines in these states. A total of more than 400 mines are represented by Table 1.

ALUMINUM which has lost its original identity as to source may be considered as secondary. This would include scrap originating in the fabrication of aluminum, which is not consumed at the plant of fabrication, and all material resulting from fabrication, which has lost its original identity regardless of whether it be consumed at the plant of fabrication or not. In general, secondary aluminum may be divided into two classes, commercially pure and alloyed. The chief impurities found in commercially pure aluminum are copper, iron, titanium and silicon; while in aluminum alloys, copper, iron, titanium, silicon, zinc, manganese, magnesium, nickel, or tin, may be present in varying proportions. Occasionally lead and antimony are found in secondary aluminum alloys, especially if the alloy results from remelting vender's automotive scrap. Such alloyed elements as are found in the scrap cannot be removed on remelting. In this, the remelting of secondary aluminum differs from the smelting of secondary copper or most other secondary metals. The majority of secondary materials reach the consumer in the form of remelt ingot or remelt No. 12 ingot. This ingot varies greatly in quality, depending upon the source of the material, and the manner in which it is refined and blended. The principal differences between primary and secondary ingot are: 1. The composition of secondary ingot may be more or less indefinite. 2. Secondary ingot may contain more dross and oxide. Secondary ingot may, however, be used successfully in a great many products. RELATION OF PRIMARY PRODUCTION TO SECONDARY PRODUCTION Table 1, compiled from data published by The American Metal Market, gives an approximate idea of the relation of primary to secondary production. Information obtained from other sources leads the authors to believe that the figures for secondary production are somewhat low.

In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within ground-water aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contamination. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environmental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laborator.y experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit.

Modern advances in practically all lines of industrial develo1)ment have occurred in such rapid succession, and have been accepted so readily as accomplished facts, that a retrospect surprises us, by showing how comparatively few of the acknowledged factors of improved conditions may be considered as old. While these advances have not been confined to any country, they have been more pronounced in some than in others, and nowhere more so than in the United States, the population of which, having multiplied nearly three-fold between 1870 and 1910, demanded a proportionately greater increase in materials, supplies, and manufactured products. It therefore appears desirable to discuss mainly conditions in the United States, as concrete evidence of industrial progress throughout the world. Looking backward for but three generations, me mar trace the introduction and developmerit of canal- and steamboat-narigation ; railroad-transportation; artificial illumination beyond that f'urnished by candles and animal-oils; quick communication by mail, and subsequently by telegraph or telephone; the manufacture of iron, beyond forms of small dimensions; the production and utilization of steel in large quantities; the economic use of mineral fuel, oil and gas, etc. The practical coincidence of the fortieth anniversary and the 100th technical meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, offers temptation to recall and compare the conditions of milling and metallurgy in or about the years 1871 .and 1911. A complete résumé would cover phenomenal changes in mining-methods and equipment by which the output of individual exploitations has grown from scores to hundreds and even thousands of units in equal time-intervals. Zinc recovery from lead blast-furnace slags has heretofore been an indirect process, involving, first, the fuming off and collecting of an impure zinc oxide, and second, the reduction of the zinc portion of this oxide to metal either by electrolytic or pyrolytic means. (In a variation of this process, blue powder is the intermediate product rather than zinc oxide fume.) In 1940, W. T. Isbell proposed that molten slag from the lead blast furnace or stock-pile slag melted down in a blast or cupola-type furnace be charged directly into an airtight container (i.e., furnace) provided with means to heat further the slag by passage of electric current and means to introduce the carbon (coke) necessary to reduce the ZnO constituent of the slag to zinc as a zinc vapor and CO. He also proposed that the zinc vapors so obtained be condensed in a Weaton-Najariant internal condenser directly connected to the proposed furnace. It was thought that the Weaton-Najarian condenser could liquefy zinc vapor from lean mixtures of vapor and noncondensable gases. Such condensers have been in commercial use! since 1936 at Josephtown smelter, where the source of zinc vapor is a column of coke and zinc-bearing sinter electrically heated (charge resistor). Condenser output when supplied with vapor-gas mixtures containing approximately 45 per cent zinc and 55 per cent noncondensable gases, varies from 18 to 30 tons of slab zinc per day per condenser, depending upon the heat-transfer area (length) of the condenser and the volume of vapor (furnace size) fed to it. Lead-smelting operations at the St. Joseph Lead Company's plant at Hercu-laneum, Mo., produce a slag containing 12 to 16 per cent zinc. For several years this slag has been stock-piled with the object of recovering the zinc values if and when a commercial method was invented. Evaluation of the possibilities of the proposed method was made by pilot-plant operation at Josephtown. The first plant, designed in 1940 and operated in early 1941, consisted of a single-phase, two-electrode furnace. The evolved vapors were burned. Electrical characteiistics of the molten slag, power requirements, coke requirements, and extent of zinc elimination indicated the feasibility of the proposed method. In the latter part of 1941 a second pilot furnace was constructed, to which "was attached a small (6 ft. long) Weaton-Najarian condenser in order to develop an over-all picture of zinc-in-slag to zinc-in-slabs. This furnace was operated in the early part of 1942 and yielded such promising results that a decision was made to design- and construct a commercial furnace. Commercial strip mining of coal was first begun in the state of Illinois in 1911.l The annual tonnage of coal produced from coal strip mines in the state was very small until 1924, when the strip mines shipped 1.68 pct of the total state shipping mine tonnage. Since then, strip mines have gradually come into their own by producing a sizable percentage of the coal produced in the state. Table 1 shows the coal tonnage shipped from both underground and strip coal mines in the state of Illinois for selected years. The table illustrates the major role that strip mines play in the state's coal industry. Today, strip mining is generally conducted in areas where the coal seams lie so close to the surface of earth that a stripping method of mining the coal seam is cheaper than an underground method. Strip mining not only recovers 100 pct of the coal deposit, but may also be used as a method of mining large acreages of coal abandoned by the closing of underground mines. Open cut or strip mining is a very highly mechanized method of producing coal and is carried on in three distinct and separate operations. The first of these is uncovering or exposing the coal seam so that the coal is made available for mining. The second operation is that of actually mining the coal. The third operation is the washing, crushing and grading of the coal according to the producer's market. Description of Shovel The Marion 5560 power shovel is used in the first of these three operations. The large electric-powered shovel works forward and back across the coal deposits, removing the overburden of dirt, rock, and clay in successive cuts of 30 to 60 ft deep and 40 to 80 ft wide. The shovel has a maximum cutting height of 95 ft, but around 60 ft is considered to be the maximum economical cutting height by the operators. The smaller the depth of cut, the more economically the shovel will operate until a minimum cut of 15 ft is reached, below which the efficiency decreases rapidly. The Marion shovel may be used in tandem stripping in excessive depths of overburden. The other type of excavating equipment used in the tandem team is generally a dragline with a long boom of about 180 ft. In tandem stripping, the dragline is used to remove the upper portion of the cut and to place it at a maximum dumping radius from the place of removal. The Marion 5560 power shovel is then used to remove the overburden left above the coal seam and to deposit it at the shovel's maximum dumping radius. MANY of the magnesite ores of the western part of the United States contain such large amounts of silica and hydrous silicate minerals that the value of the ores is either low or nominal. Expensive and carefully controlled mining methods are necessary to prevent excessive dilution of the higher grade ores by introduction in mining of small pieces of the hanging walls or footwalls of the deposit. This difficulty is further complicated by the various states of decomposition of the country rock of the deposits in which many of the ores occur. The problem the authors attempted to solve arose from a request to float an impure magnesite containing varying proportions of siliceous gangue with calcium carbonate. The ore is normally enclosed in-serpen-tine masses, somewhat decomposed, and in mining it wall rock is inci-dentally added, so that variable amounts of siliceous material occur in the samples. The silica, alumna, and iron oxide are so closely associated with the magnesium carbonate in the magnesite that ordinary mechanical separation at coarse mesh sizes is of no avail. It is well known that calcium carbonate can be floated by suitable reagents, therefore it seemed reasonable to suppose that magnesium carbonate minerals would behave in a similar manner, but experimental trial proved that this supposition was unfounded. Therefore the first step in the problem was to find out what differences of behavior there were between magnesium and calcium carbonates under flotation conditions, or when suspended in water. In water at 18° C. magnesium carbonate is slightly more soluble than calcium carbonate; in fact; MgCO3 is soluble to the extent of 0.0106 grams in 100 c.c. of water at 18° C. and CaCO3 to the extent of 0.0013 grams. However, magnesium carbonate in water gradually changes to the basic carbonates of a composition (3MgCO3.Mg(OH)23H20) or (4MgCO3.Mg(OH)25H20), depending upon conditions, and calcium carbonate to calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2. The relative solubilities of these hydroxides in water are the reverse of the solubilities of magnesium and calcium carbonates. The range in published figures for solubility

Analysis of a mine roof can be based on fixed-end beam behavior. The author here analyzes the effects of zero restraint at deflecting beam supports. Formulae are given for determining permissible support deflections. Analysis of a mine roof in a bedded deposit usually follows the assumption that the behavior of the roof is analogous to a beam with both ends fixed. Yet it is recognized that the end restraint itself varies with the thickness of cover, so that at shallow depth the restraint is minimum, and at great depth, maximum.' Consequently, an analysis on the basis of fixed ends or full restraint represents only one extreme in the possible range of conditions. Since the actual amount of restraint is difficult to ascertain, a more rational approach is to consider the two extreme cases of end restraint. Such situations regarding uncertainty of the restraining effects of supports are not uncommon in structural analysis, and are handled in a like manner.' Since previous studies9)4 have dealt with full restraint, this paper will analyze the effects of zero restraint at deflecting beam supports. In such a case a mine roof with several intermediate supports becomes analogous to a uniformly loaded continuous beam on simple supports, as shown in Fig. 1A. Such a structure is statically indeterminate to a degree equal to the number of intermediate supports, n. Therefore, with the three equilibrium equations, n additional equations are needed. A number of methods exist to analyze this problem, but The Theorem of Three Moments is Simplest. The continuous beam is divided at each support into a sequence of simply supported single span beams, with the unknown end moments, as appears in Fig. 1B. IN the introduction to an excellent pamphlet, John Gross1 makes the following statements: Although marked progress has been made along mechanical lines, the theory and conception of underlying principles have not advanced so rapidly. This lack of advance in theory may be attributed to the unfortunate situation resulting from the controversy as to whether the Rittinger or Kick law is applicable to crushing. Many pages of the technical literature are burdened with theoretical discussions in favor of one or the other of these laws, which have tended to cloud rather than to clear the atmosphere. Realizing the situation, the Milling Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, through its secretary, E. A. Hersam, studied the milling industry and, because of the apparently hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute (5, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 30. 34), concluded that a foundation for the theory of crushing was of primary importance. The numbers in the paragraph quoted refer to papers listed by Mr. Gross in his Bibliography on Crushing and Grinding.1 One is obliged to infer that these papers show "hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute." No. 22 is a paper by Arthur O. Gates2 and No. 23 is one by the writer.3 Employing the subject matter contained in papers Nos. 22 and 2323 the writer will show that their authors formulated identical conclusions, based solely on experimental evidence. Exactly the same defect in the Stadler hypothesis was described in each of the two papers, although entirely different experimental methods were employed in uncovering it. Both of the authors, independently, formulated the conclusion that Rittinger's was a. true hypothesis and Stadler's false. The evidence in a third paper4 will be employed to prove that Stadler's hypothesis, when examined experimentally, is worthless. STADLER'S HYPOTHESIS WORTHLESS It is the writer's opinion that the evidence available in 1915 and the corroborating evidence in 1916 was amply sufficient to eliminate the need for any further consideration of Stadler's hypothesis. Certainly the evidence produced in 1918 dealt this hypothesis its coup de grace. It follows, therefore, that in the year 1918 there was only one credible hypothesis left-the Rittinger hypothesis. Gates' Opinion What information is available in Mr. Gates' paper?2 His conclusions are not consecutively summarized, none the less they are perfectly clear. On page 876, Gates says, and it is a very significant utterance: But my results show, among other things, that many more of Stadler's energy units are obtained per foot-pound-applied in coarse than in fine crushing. This suggests a doubt as to the correctness of his unit, since one would expect a foot-pound-applied to produce the same number of "energy units," whether the feed and resulting product were coarse or fine. ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the, Institute itself has five major awards to make annually for excellence in technical papers, as follows The Robert W. At the San Francisco meeting of the Institute last year, I presented, through the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas, some results of experiments on the roasting and leaching of concentrator tailings. After it became apparent that flotation rather than leaching was clearly the better method of handling the particular problem under consideration, before dismantling the experimental equipment, some data were secured on roasting and leaching the concentrate itself in competition with smelting. Some of the results obtained are given in the following paper and they are of particular interest at this time in view of the large quantities of flotation concentrates with their somewhat difficult smelting characteristics now being produced. A complete wet processt consists of roasting and leaching the calcines in dilute sulphuric acid produced from the roaster gases, roasting the residue with salt and leaching with dilute tower liquors (the well-known Longmaid-Henderson process) and recovering the copper, silver and gold by cementation or electrolysis or a combination of both. It is evident, however, that the residue from the first leaching, carrying about 20 per cent. of the copper and all of the silver and gold, can be smelted if preferable. In considering the application of the scheme to individual cases, it must be remembered that freight plays a large part in any reduction process wherein smelting is not conducted at the mouth of the mine, and that it is not practicable today to build small smelting plants for individual operations, The experiments may be grouped under four main heads: Roasting, leaching, chloridizing residue, and recovery of copper from solutions. The products of two concentrators were used: The Nacozari concentrates were the product of a large modern mill not using flotation, the copper mineral being largely chalcopyrite; and the Tyrone concentrates, the product of an experimental mill including flotation, the copper mineral being chiefly chalcocite. ThE Knudsen effusion technique was used to determine the chemical activities of copper and platinum in binary Cu-Pt alloys in the temperature range 1542" to 1673°K. Wiebke and Matthes1 previously obtained chemical activities of copper and platinum in this system at 673° and 923°K by the electromotive-force measurement method. They reported that the copper activities exhibited negative deviation from Raoult's law at all compositions. The chemical activities of platinum were found to change from a positive to a negative deviation at 923°K. Myles2 recently studied this system in the temperature range 1265° to 1356°K by means of the torsional-effusion technique. His results indicated that both copper and platinum exhibited negative deviation from ideality at all compositions. The use of the Knudsen effusion technique to obtain the vapor pressure of metals and alloys is well-known.3 In this work, Knudsen cells were fabricated from seamless tantalum tubing of 1-in. OD and 0.020-in. wall thickness; cell bases and covers were cut from 0.010-in.-thick tantalum sheet and welded to the cells in an argon atmosphere. Orifices were drilled and reamed to approximate a knife-edge of 30-deg included angle. Calculation based on Balson's4 derivation showed the orifice to be nearly ideal. All temperature measurements were made with a Leeds and Northrup disappearing-filament-type optical pyrometer at the orifice of the cell, which closely approximated black-body conditions and eliminated the need for emissivity corrections. Details of the experimental techniques used, and the necessary correction factors required during this investigation are essentially those previously described.5,6 Before investigating the Cu-Pt alloys, vapor-pressure measurements were obtained over specimens of pure (OFHC) copper. The pure-copper data5 served to assure the accuracy of the experimental apparatus and technique.

The group of claims, comprising over 1,100 acres, located at Maitland (formerly known as Garden City), in the Ida Gray mining district, Lawrence county, South Dakota, are now being developed and operated by Alexander Maitland, the owner. Prior to the acquisition of this property two years ago by Mr. Maitland, but little work had been done in this district, and little was known of the extent of the ore-deposits. Recent development, however, has opened up some very promising ore-shoots. The ores so far encountered are the so-called " Potsdam siliceous ores," occurring in the flat formation lying immediately above the Cambrian quartzite, which dips at this locality about 12º. Both oxidized and blue ores are found, and the latter have proven particularly refractory to treat. No prospecting in the underlying slates of the Archean period has so far been attempted; but this work is one of the future considerations in the development of the property. Small quantities of blue ores are unavoidably sent to the mill, but special care is taken to send only the oxidized ores for the cyanide treatment. The ores, being close-grained and hard, have given considerable trouble in their treatment. Pyrrhotite arid pyrite exist in about equal proportions; arsenic, copper, and traces of antimony and tellurium are encountered, and considerable quantities of bismuth have been found in the zinc-box precipitates. The silver in the low-grade ores is slightly greater than the gold, while in the high-grade ores the reverse is generally true. Table I., showing the variations in the analyses of these ores, gives a fair idea of their general character.
