Five factors are required for the formation of uranium deposits: a source, transporting medium, host, trap, and preservation. Locating and evaluating uranium deposits requires ail integration of methods and techniques to determine if the above factors are present. A typical exploration program consists of selection of a favorable area, field reconnaissance, land acquisition, and target definition and evaluation. Target definition and evaluation utilizes a combination of geologic mapping, geochemical surveying, geophysical surveying, and drilling and logging. Each overlaps the others to some degree.

KAISER WILHELM TRUST FOR PROMOTION OF WAR SCIENCE The Kaiser has approved the foundation of a Trust with the name given above. The aim of the Trust is to further the development of scientific and technical aids to warfare, by uniting the scientific and the military forces of the country for work together. The scientific Work is to be carried on by the following technical committees (or commissions) (1) Committee for the chemical raw materials, for the production of munitions-manufacturing materials. (2) Committee for chemical war materials (powder, explosives, gas, and the like). (3) Committee for physics, including ballistics, telephony, telegraphy, determination of targets and distances, measurements, and the like. (4) Committee for engineering and communication. (5) Committee for aeronautics. (6) Committee for obtaining and preparation of metals.

The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and out- standing attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. Approximately 850 delegates from 24 countries met in Tokyo, Japan, May 24-27, for the second MMIJ-AIME Joint Meeting in 55 years, to exchange technical knowledge and experience in the fields of exploration, mining, metallurgy and petroleum engineering. The first such meeting was held in 1917 in Kyoto, Japan. Although the Mining and Metallurgical Institute of Japan was the sponsor, the entire meeting (machinery exposition, technical program, and tours) was a joint effort of the two institutes.

The concentrate produced from the Adirondack magnetites is, of course, too fine for direct use in a blast furnace and must be agglomerated before it can be considered a blast furnace ore. The four operations in the area use sintering -three, including the Jones & Laughlin operation, employing the Dwight Lloyd continuous type machine and one operation using the Greenawalt batch type process. Each operation uses fine anthracite coal, either No. 4 or No. 5 buckwheat size, for the mix fuel.

The effectiveness of coalface powered support depends upon its structural nature and the manner of application of the hydraulic system. A critical and largely unresolved feature of the system is the optimum setting pressure level at which a support should operate in its geological environment. This paper provides an argument for a generalised approach to the issue of setting pressure level quoting case study data for a high output British longwall installation.

Pressure oxidation of gold containing concentrates and ores is an effective pretreatment for liberating refractory gold. This is particularly true when an appreciable portion of the gold is associated with sulfides and is not amenable to conventional cyanidation. A brief review of the literature on pressure oxidation of refractory gold materials is presented. The chemistry of the aqueous oxidation of arsenopyrite and pyrite is discussed. Data obtained on pressure oxidation and subsequent cyanidation of concentrates and ores tested at the Sherritt Research Centre are also presented.

JET piercing is a licensed process developed by Linde Air Products Co. Experiments with this method lapsed during World War II, but in the decade that followed the process was expedited. Two types of drills mount the jet piercing equipment for blastholes. The turntable of one machine rotates the complete stem system as well as the blowpipe, which emits three individual flames at different levels. Depth penetrated is limited by length of the blowpipe mounted in the rotary mechanism. This machine has successfully drilled blast- holes in Minnesota taconite.

* Phosphate from the Maiden Rock deposits in the Missouri River Basin, Mont., are to be developed by the Victor Chemical Works of Chicago. A $5 million plant for processing the rock into elemental phosphorus is to be constructed in the vicinity of Butte. The plant will receive power from the Bonneville Power Administration. * Tests are being made to determine whether iron pellets from taconite concentrates will boost blast furnace and open hearth output at the Campbell Works of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. About 35,000 tons of iron pellets have been shipped from Minnesota for this purpose.

sage' appears to have been the first (1933) to design a rolling ball viscosimeter for the express purpose of measuring the viscosity of oils with natural gas in solution, i.e., under reservoir conditions. In 1940 Hocott and Buckley' further refined the rolling ball instrument in both design and method of operation, and their instrument, known as the Humble type, was the forerunner of present day viscosimeters used in petroleum production and research laboratories. This is the dawning of the computer age in process control. As 1968 drew to a close, many plants had computer installations which were being used for logging, monitoring and reporting. Today, computer usage is given serious consideration before the construction of any major minerals processing plant. Unitized automatic control of individual processes is abundant. Many plants are considering closing these control loops, i.e., allowing the computer to direct the operation of the controllers (Digital Analog Control-DAC). The next step is to make the computer itself the controller (Direct Digital Control-DDC)1 Perhaps the most important future use of computers will be in controlling interrelated operations and control units. Progress along these lines depends on the steadily improving capabilities in the field of mathematical modeling.

CIRCULAR steel sets have proved to be more economical for supporting slusher drifts in the block-caving mining used by the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz. The first steel sets were installed in July 1950, and up to July 1, 1951, about 474 sets (approximately 1896 ft of drift) were placed; the bulk of this work was done in the latter six months. All of the places selected for the steel were in heavy ground. Based on this experience the following definite conclusions can be drawn:

Observations of ground behavior in mining the Choka Dulkan ore body have been described. Ore recovery was limited to approximately 60% because unconsolidated hydraulic fill did not permit either the widening of stope spans nor secondary ore recovery from pillars. Stope undercutting induced high stress concentrations. However, as extraction progressed, ground conditions improved but before extraction was complete they deteriorated again. After completion of a stope, the remnant rib and crown pillars continued to be deformed by other stresses for some time.

A prediction is made of the airflow at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory with a ventilation computer program that accounts for fan-driven forced ventilation and temperature-induced natural ventilation. There was substantial agreement between measured and predicted airflow rates. The capability of the program is demonstrated as a planning aid for ventilation under emergency conditions in a multilevel coal mine. Smoke spread in a multilevel mine is analyzed following the occurrence of two events, the failure of the main exhaust fan and the development of a fuel-rich fire in a passageway.

This is an outstanding paper on comminution theory and represents a considerable advance in mathematical formulation. It clears the way for a discussion that should ultimately decide whether the work index should be considered as a parameter according to the Third Theory or as a constant. In the empirical differential equation dE = C dx/xn either C or n must be treated as a variable to satisfy known crushing and grinding conditions. The author has chosen the exponent n as the variable, with C as a constant.
