Tars paper states the theory underlying the design of two kinds of dimensionally scaled models of parts of idealized oil fields. One of these simulates an oil well and its surrounding sand for a distance of 16 ft. radially from the well. The other model simulates linear flow through layered sands. Construction and operation of the models are described and typical data are given. The unique features in the design of the models are: (I) the treatment of the permeability-viscosity quotient as a single variable and (2) the use of previously reported experimentally developed relations between relative permeability and saturation and capillary pressure, saturation, porosity, perm ability and interfacial tension. The models at present simulate flow of oil and water only, through unconsolidated sands. They are superior to unscaled models, which may give rise to erroneous conclusions. The models are designed to study the desirability of various methods of sell completion and the effects of various factors on recovery of oil from layered sands.

In the spring of 1967, after a careful study of existing geology along the Pacific Coast including Alaska, the USBM, in conjunction with the USGS, decided that the offshore area around Nome, Alaska, presented an unparalleled land-to-sea comparison site for the evaluation of marine core drilling techniques and sampling equipment. Considering the geological evidence available and the production history of the Nome Beaches (5-6 million oz. of gold recovered), it appeared likely that gold in commercial quantities could occur in the offshore area. A 180 sq mi area of Norton Sound, extending roughly 14 miles to the east and west of Nome and averaging 6 miles to the south, was tested by approximately 530 line-miles of sub-bottom profiling. A total of 4043 ft (56 holes) were drilled in unconsolidated sediments, yielding mixtures of gravel, sand, silt and clay. Of the total holes drilled, 16 went to bedrock and six were terminated short of their intended depths due to boulders which halted penetration, or rough seas which caused the ship to move as the anchors slipped over hard sea-floor surface. The rest of the holes were terminated when the penetrative capabilities of the drills were reached, or when the required amount of geological data were attained.

This paper describes the analytical characteristics of Western subbituminous coal and the manner in which these characteristics apply to their use in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares these characteristics with those of typical Midwestern coal and Eastern bituminous coal. The paper also reviews in detail the design considerations that must receive attention when various blends of these three coals, or any combinations thereof, are planned to be used. This research paper describes variations in analytical and utilization characteristics when coals from different origins are blended in order to achieve a predetermined sulfur content for the purpose of predicting sulfur oxides emissions as they affect environmental regulations and the resulting alterations in utilization characteristics such blending would cause, and how such blends of coal would affect a utility-sized steam generator.

The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto theCu2S was identified as the double salt CU(DPG)2SO4.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuS04.3Cu(0H)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

The Los Bronces copper deposit is located on the west side of the Andes Mountains in central Chile about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Santiago. The deposit consists of a hydrothermal breccia complex that was emplaced in the western part of an earlier porphyry copper mineral system. This system exhibits propylitic, sericitic, silicic to potassic hydrothermal alteration with disseminated and stockwork copper-molybdenum sulfide mineralization over an area of about 12 km2 (5 sq. miles). The Rio Blanco Mine, about 800 m (0.5 miles) east of Los Bronces, is an underground block caving mine located in the central part of this system. The mineralization at Rio Blanco is characterized by one of the highest primary copper grades known for porphyry copper systems. Present mining at Los Bronces is from an open pit located in the northern part of a hydrothermal complex that is composed of at least seven different copper-bearing tourmaline breccia pipes. Together these pipe form one large contiguous body about 2 km (1.2 miles) long and 0.7 km (0.4 miles) wide at the surface. This body crops out at elevations of between 3.5 and 4.1 km (2 and 2.5 miles) above sea level. Each breccia pipe has a characteristic shape, matrix, type and degree of mineralization and alteration. Quartz, tourmaline, specularite, anhydrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sericite, chlorite, and rock flour are present in significant quantities in most breccia matrices. The clasts consist mainly of quartz monzonite, andesite, and minor amounts of quartz latite porphyry. The seven different breccia pipes are identified, from oldest to youngest, as Ghost, Central, Western, Infiernillo, Fine Gray, Anhydrite, and Donoso. The breccias coalesce, interfinger, or display gradational contacts. In places they form sharp contacts with each other and with the surrounding intrusive or volcanic host rocks. Early breccias are disrupted or cut by subsequent breccia events. Explosive emplacement was followed by collapse after the release of hydrothermal pressures. The Los Bronces breccia complex has sharp contacts with the surrounding intrusive stock and andesites. These contacts dip inward on the north, west, and south margins. The eastern contact is nearly vertical and/or dips slightly outward and suggests a westward tilting of the body of about 15° after emplacement. The breccia complex is not fully explored at depth, but is known to extend at least below the 3 km (2 mile) elevation in its central eastern part, about 1 km (0.6 miles) below the highest breccia outcrop. Primary copper sulfide minerals are most abundant in the Donoso and Infiernillo breccias where the matrix consists mostly of tourmaline, quartz, sulfides, specularite, and/or chlorite with minor amounts of rock flour, sericite, and clay. The volume of the matrix material is mostly smaller than in the other breccias. Secondary enrichment enhanced the primary copper grade in the southern two-thirds of the Los Bronces breccia complex and in much of the surrounding porphyry system. Primary grades of 0.3% to 0.5% copper have been enriched to approximately 0.9%. This enrichment may extend from surface outcrops to a depth of more than 500 m (1, 640 ft) in more permeable parts of the breccia complex. A leached and oxidized capping of variable thickness covers a large part of the enriched layer and exceeds 300 m (984 ft) at one location. The shape and depth of the enrichment blanket and the capping suggest that the enrichment process is still active.

Simultaneous measurement of pore and elastic properties of socks under a wide range of triaxial stress conditions may be made with equipment and methods developed in this paper. Tests were run on three outcrop sandstones at several confining pressures and axial stresses up to approximately 80 percent of failure stress. The greater reduction in porosities and permeabilities occurred in the hydrostatic loading portion of the stress cycle, but substantial reductions in both properties did occur upon application of deviator (triaxial) stress. Triaxial elastic moduli were calculated from strain gauge measurements. Both Young's moduli and shear moduli were found to increase with increasing confining pressure. Poisson's ratios increased with axial stress but showed no consistent change with confining pressure. Only very general relations were observed between pore and elastic properties. The lesser decrease in porosity and permeability at higher stress values is related to increase in rigidity of rocks at higher stresses. INTRODUCTION Many investigators have studied the effects of hydrostatic stress on the properties and behavior of rocks. A few have studied the effects of triaxial stress fields on individual physical properties of rocks. To our knowledge no one has measured simultaneously pore and elastic properties of rocks under a wide range of triaxial stress conditions. This is the purpose of this work. Rocks exist in the subsurface under what Jaegerl refers to as "polyaxial" stress conditions (all principal stresses unequal). When two of the three principal stresses are equal, this is referred to as triaxial loading. The triaxial method of loading is most commonly used in modern testing work because experimental difficulties in measuring physical properties of rocks are greatly reduced over polyaxial testing. Although triaxial loading may not reproduce subsurface conditions precisely, subsurface stress conditions are never known precisely anyway. Triaxial testing would seem to be more realistic than testing under hydrostatic loading (all principal stresses equal) for application of results to subsurface problems. The objectives of this work were threefold: (1) to develop methods of measuring simultaneously pore and elastic properties of rocks under triaxial stress conditions, (2) to determine whether changes in these properties are of sufficient magnitude to be considered in subsurface calculations and (3) to attempt to relate changes in pore properties and elastic properties since they will have been measured at the same time under identical loading conditions. REVIEW OF EARLIER WORK PORE PROPERTIES Several investigators have studied the effects of stress on the physical properties of rocks. Fatt and Davis2 showed the reduction of permeability of rock with hydrostatic loading. McLatchie et al.3 and Knutson and Bohor4 related permeability reduction to compessibility of reservoir rock, again under hydrostatic loading. Wble,5 and later Redmond,6 evaluated the effects of applied radial pressure on conductivity, porosity and permeability of sandstones. In this latter work, no axial stress was applied. Dobrynin7 reviewed much of the previous work done . on the effects of overburden pressure on physical properties of rocks. He concluded that changes in physical properties are controlled to a large extent by pore compressibility of the rock. Several sets of curves developed from empirical relations are presented. These curves permit estimation of change of properties with net overburden pressure, knowing the pore compressibility and porosity of the rock. ALTHOUGH chronologically, the Sb-Bi system was the first one studied by the writer, the theoretical basis of the equations used in this paper is fully discussed in the writer's paper on the iron-carbon system,1 because he believed that many would be more interested in the iron-carbon alloys. He suggests, therefore, that the reader consult that paper to familiarize himself with the theoretical aspect of the thermodynamic treatment outlined herein. This paper is divided into two parts: Part I deals with the Sb-Bi system and Part II deals with the lead-rich side of the Sb-Pb system. Although the former system has not much practical interest now, it has great theoretical interest in that it, is the one system that for a long time was thought to have (and under specific conditions still has) an anomalous solidus, which no amount of physical investigation could adequately account -for. The latter system of course, is particularly interesting in the lead-rich end. It will be shown that the thermodynamic method is capable of predicting reliably the equilibrium position of the solidus, and thus acts as a check on the experimentally derived solidus.

In continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from 3/s in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals.

During the discussion on the Preparation and Utilization of Sniall Sizes of Anthracite (page 613 of present volume), several inquiries were made concerning the use of the McClave grate, which was mentioned by Mr. Coxe as having proved satisfactory in the generation of steam at his collieries, and also at a large number of industrial estal)lishments in Scranton and elsewhere. For a more satisfactory repIy to such inquiries than could be furnished in the oral discussion, I have prepared the following paper to be included in the published proceedings. And, as the use of the fuel under consideration necessarily requires the employment of a blower to change the fire, from a condition giving an incandescent radiant heat only to one giving a hot gaseoua flame as well, I shall add a description of the McClave Argand blower and its method of action. The grate and blower combined form a complete and effective system fcr burning small fuels, such as anthracite culm, birdseye, buckwheat, bituminous slack, etc., in boiler and other furnaces; while the grate alone is now extensively used with the larger sizes of hard and soft coal in furnaces where blast is riot required. The occurrence of zircon in pegmatites of acidic composition is recorded by many observers both in this country and abroad, and they form one of the most important geologic modes of occurrence of the minera1. As is well known, commercially the most important American locality for zircon is near Zirconia in Henderson County, North Carolina, where many tons of the mineral have been obtained from a kaolinized pegmatite dike 100 ft. wide and traced for 1 1/2 miles along the direction of strike N. 50" E. Zircon may be developed in pegmatites as inclusions in the principal rock-forming minerals, chiefly quartz and feldspar, and as a separate megascopic constituent in the form of grains and crystals not exceeding, as a rule, 2 in. in size, and usually smaller. In the Henderson County, North Carolina, pegmatite, zircon occurs in prismatic crystals with pyramidal terminations measuring up to 30 mm. in diameter, associated chiefly with the feldspar. In some of the apatite veins of Canada, which are closely allied to pogmatite dikes, zircon is reported in crystals upward of 6 in. in length and 2 in. and more in thickness. Zircon in large masses occurs in Virginia in the well-known pegmatites near Amelia in Amelia County, and near Gouldin in Hanover County. Both localities are in the middle eastern portion of the Piedmont Plateau province, and are separated by a distance of about 40 miles in a northeast-southwest direction. The rocks of both areas, including the pegmatite bodies, are in an advanced stage of decay, and the hard and moderately fresh rocks are concealed beneath a cover of variable thickness of rock decay derived by the normal processes of weathering. Certain high molecular weight synthetic polymers in very dilute solutions decrease water mobility in porous media 5 to 20 times more than would be expected from the solution viscosity. This indicates that increasing water viscosity to reduce adverse mobility ratios in water floods is economically feasible in many situations. Laboratory results are consistent with accepted theory with respect to improved areal sweep, permeability distribution and displacement efficiencies as would be predicted from the solution mobility measured in the core. The laboratory results have been confirmed by field pilot floods which recovered 80 per cent and 100 per cent more oil than comparative water-flood pilots in fields containing 16 cp and 130 cp oil respectively. Economic analyses based on pilot data indicate the method to be profitable. INTRODUCTION The desirability of improving the water-oil mobility ratio in waterflood-ing operations has long been appreciated, especially for high viscosity crudes. Methods of reducing the oil viscosity by application of heat, gas resaturation and miscible drives have met with some success. Conversely, it has been generally conceded that increasing the water viscosity would also be effective, but the amount of thickening agent required to effect an appreciable increase in viscosity is discouragingly high. The use of such materials as glycerin, sugar, or glycols is completely out of the question economically, so that considerable attention has been given to the use of the much more efficient synthetic water-soluble polymers as viscosity improvers; but even these materials are not economically attractive. If increased water viscosity could be economically realized, marked improvements in areal sweep efficiency, as discussed by Caudle and Wittel and others, would be realized in field operations. Similarly, the improved mobility ratio would bring about increased recoveries by correcting permeability distribution problems as discussed by Stiles2 and Dykstra and Parsons,' and improvements in displacement efficiency would be obtained as recognized by Buckley and Leverett4 and Welge.5 LABORATORY STUDIES THE RESISTANCE EFFECT In the course of research to develop a more efficient water-soluble polymer viscosity builder, we discovered that a very few types of water-soluble polymers exhibited a most unusual and very interesting property not previously observed. Among the earliest materials showing such activity were polymers containing acry-lamide. Fig. 1 shows a typical plot of the solution viscosity vs concentration for one of these polymer solutions as determined in an Ostwald viscometer. As usual, such a plot is an approximate straight line on semi-logarithmic paper. Now, an inspection of Darcy's law, shows that a viscosity value can also be determined in a formation sample if the pressure, flow rate and permeability are known. If the core permeability is previously determined with wa- ter or brine, then the viscosity of another aqueous fluid may be determined from the equation. The viscosities so determined for glycerin (glycol or polyvinyl alcohol solutions, for example) agree with the viscometer determinations. However, in the case of the water-soluble polymer solutions in which we are interested, the viscosities measured in the formation sample depart very markedly from the viscometer values. A typical relationship for a polymer solution is also shown in Fig. 1. This unusual departure from the expected response is referred to as a resistance property of the polymer and is quantified as "resistance factor". Since the resistance factor R can best be determined in a core under study, the term has been defined on the basis of the ratio of the brine mobility to the polymer solution mobility at residual oil saturation so that:

A NY mechanism proposed to explain hydrogen embrittlement in titanium and its alloys must, of course, be consistent with the experimental data that characterize this embrittlement. Unfortunately, however, the mechanical behavior of hydrogen-bearing titanium, at least a-ß titanium, has not been unequivocally defined. Lenning, Craighead, and Jaffee have clearly shown that hydrogen cmbrittles a-titanium by elevating its transition temperature, probably as the result of the formation of titanium hydrides. Therefore, in these alloys, hydrogen acts like at least one other interstitial contaminant, namely, nitrogen.&apos; On the other hand, ß-titanium has been shown by these same investigators to tolerate very large amounts of hydrogen without suffering severe mechanical damage.2 Mixing these two phases, however, to form the most important class of commercial alloys, the a-ß alloys, again results in severe hydrogen embrittlement, although the mechanism by which the embrittlement is produced is not of the same type as that which causes brittleness in a alloys. Ductility damage due to hydrogen increases as the strain rate is reduced in a-ß alloys, while embrittlement in a alloys increases as the strain rate is increased, since the latter is a transition temperature behavior. Steel, like the a-ß alloys, becomes more hydrogen sensitive at slow strain rates, suggesting that the mechanism producing the embrittlement in these two metals is similar. Brown and Baldwin&apos; described the hydrogen-produced ductility depression in steel as a function of testing temperature and strain rate by defining the slope of the two surfaces that produced the depression in a three dimensional chart, Fig. 1. One of these surfaces was given by the equations (de/de)4 > 0 (de/dT) < 0 [1] while the other was defined by the pair of equations Surfaces of the type given by Eq. 1 are suggested in two ways. One is an embrittlement mechanism wherein the diffusion rate of hydrogen is competitive with the rate at which the material is being deformed, as suggested by the planar pressure theory of Zapffe and his co-workers.&apos; The other is the diffusion controlled extension of Orowan&apos;s theory on delayed fracture in glass by Petch and Stables.&apos;&apos; Surfaces of the type given by Eq. 2 are also compatible with a mechanism of pressure build up in voids, according to de Kazinczy,&apos; since the solubility of hydrogen in the metal increases with testing temperature so that as the temperature is raised, the pressure in the voids is reduced. Kotfila and Erbin recently presented some data on the dependence of ductility on testing temperature and strain rate for the a-ß 3 pet Mn complex alloy at four different hydrogen levels.H Although data were presented for only three testing temperatures at three different strain rates, their results indicated that surfaces of the types defined in Eqs. 1 and 2 are produced in the alloy when the hydrogen level is sufficiently high—200 and 300 ppm—Fig. 2. Jaffee and his co-workers presented data on a number of different a-ß alloys which indicated the existence of surfaces of the type described by Eq. 2, but the ductility recovery at low temperatures as given by Eq. 1 was not found." In an attempt to aid in crystallizing this description of the ductility dependence of hydrogen-bearing a-ß alloys, tests were conducted by the author on a-ß titanium 140A with three different hydrogen contents. The tensile properties of two as-received rods and one vacuum annealed rod* were obtained over a range of testing temperatures and strain rates as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Hydrogen analyses were made by the Battelle Memorial Institute on four pieces of the rod whose properties are shown as solid circles in Fig. 4. The hydrogen content of these pieces, taken at widely spaced intervals within the rod, were 280, 270, 289, and 270 ppm, indicating that the hydrogen content within a single as-received rod was quite uniform. One of the broken test pieces whose properties are shown in Fig. 3 as solid circles was also analyzed, and found to have a hydrogen content of 310 ppm. The analyses obtained on two of the vacuum annealed specimens were 92 and 170 ppm.

Analytical and experimental procedures are descrihed for quantitative determination of volume-fraction microporosity in metals by mimorarlio-graphg. The analysis assumes spherical pores but allows for the observed fact that pores or portions of pores smaller than a given thickness do not project an image on the film. Volume-fraction microporosity was measuured in cast low-alloy steel and shown to vary from 0.6 x 10-4 to 10 x 10 depending on mode of solidification and on whether the material was air- or vacuum-cast. The aim of work described herein was to develop a method of quantitative measurement of the volume fraction of microporosity in cast metals. Microporosity, present in nearly all castings and ingots, is always interdendritic in nature and may be large enough to be seen on a polished surface with the naked eye. More generally, it is smaller in size, and its detection more difficult. Three techniques might be considered for measurement of microporosity: 1) lineal analysis of a polished metallographic surface, 2) density measurement, or 3) quantitative microradiography. As will be shown later, volume fractions of porosity in directionally solidified castings may be the order of 10-4 to 10-3; such small amounts of porosity are difficult to identify and measure on a polished surface. Density measurement is also not a suitable technique (for alloys) when the volume fraction of porosity is low. This is because the density of the base metal is often not known within the necessary accuracy, due to microsegregation or partial phase transformations. In general, it is not possible to completely eliminate microsegregation without also altering the porosity. Because of the limitations of the foregoing techniques, quantitative microradiography was employed to determine amount of porosity. In recent work, microradiography has been found to be useful for qualitative measurement of porosity, including determination of size and shape of individual pores;&apos;)&apos; however, quantitative determination of amount of porosity has not been attempted. I) CALCULATION OF VOLUME-FRACTION POROSITY The following analysis employs procedures similar to those of Cahn and Nutting3 and Hilliard.4 Major simplifications are that pores are assumed to be spherical and to be present in sufficiently small quantities that no overlapping occurs. A basic difference from the previous treatments is that the limited "sensitivity" of microradiography is considered. Assume first 1) cavities are spherical and of uniform diameter, 2) cavities are randomly distributed, 3) volume-fraction porosity and specimen thickness to pore radius ratio are sufficiently small that overlapping of the projected images of cavities is negligible, 4) sensitivity is limited (i.e., holes or portions of holes of less than a given thickness do not project an image on the film). The sensitivity, is defined as: where 5 = minimum thickness of void from which an image will be projected on the film and t = specimen thickness. Now, from Fig. 1, it is possible to distinguish between two different types of holes. These are 1) holes whose centers lie within the region t/2 > X > 6/2, where X is distance from one surface of the specimen (positive into the specimen), and 2) holes whose centers lie within the region (6 — r) < X < 6/2, Holes whose centers lie outside X = (6 -r) project no image on the film. These two types of pores are considered separately below. Type 1 Pores. When 6 is greater than 0, the image of a spherical cavity of radius r appears on the film as a circle of radius a which is smaller than r. In 1977, an article in World Mining1 reported a total of 2726 rotary blasthole drills in service. This figure included only those machines produced by three of the manufacturers building drills of this type. The total, therefore, is much higher. Rotary drilling in the mining industry is big business to the manufacturers and suppliers involved, and a significant cost item to mine operators. The time has come to take a hard look at rotary drilling technology with an eye to reducing costs by increasing drilling efficiency. The efficiency of any rotary drilling operation is best measured in terms of the rate of penetration achieved by the bit. In blast hole drilling, there are five factors which affect the rate of penetration. They are: (1) bit selection, (2) weight on the bit, (3) rotary speed, (4) hole cleaning, and (5) formation properties. Of these factors, all but one may be controlled by the operator. Looking at any one in detail may reveal possible improvements in the system. One of these factors -- proper hole cleaning - will be discussed in this paper. In order for a bit to perform at its maximum capability, each tooth or insert should strike fresh clean rock as it falls into its drilling position. If the tooth or insert lands on previously drilled cuttings, a major portion of the energy delivered to the bit is absorbed in redrilling this broken material. A major portion of the interest, therefore, should be directed to the proper cleaning of the bottom of the hole. In an in-depth study of the cleaning of large diameter holes, Allen2 reports that horizontal air velocities of 38.10 m/s are necessary to prevent the saltation of drilled cuttings on the bottom of the hole. The exact flow pattern on the bottom of the hole, however, is not generally known. The air leaves the bit through the jet nozzles and the mouths of the cones, but where it goes from there is uncertain. This problem should be investigated by the bit manufacturers because they can best utilize the results of such an investigation to provide a more effective product. Some work has been initiated in this area and competition will probably increase its intensity. Bailing velocity is the best criteria to measure the cleaning of the hole, including the bottom, and is the factor on which efforts toward improvement must be concentrated. The first consideration is "What should the bailing velocity really be?" In drilling deep holes for oil and gas, 15.24 m/s is the generally accepted figure. In blasthole drilling, the figures of 25.40 m/s for average rock to 35.56 m/s for iron ore were first mentioned by Capp3 in 1962. The recommendations are the same to this day. A number of questions could be asked in regard to the apparent disparity between these two sets of figures. Various investigators have derived formulas which support one or another of these criteria. A thesis on the subject was written by Alexander4 who derived a formula based on research which resulted in velocities in the lower end of the ranges quoted previously. He set out to compare this figure to laboratory tests and his tests indicated that the velocities given by the derived formula appeared to be high.1 Perhaps the best reason that the 25.40 to 35.56 m/s range has been used, is that these velocities seem to work. Below the accepted figures, low bit life and slow penetration rates occur. Above these figures, increasing amounts of abrasive wear on the drill pipe and stabilizers seem to appear. There is a fallacy to this entire approach, however. The entire velocity calculation is made using nominal bit and pipe sizes and compressor deliveries with no compensation made for losses in the system. Perhaps an examination of some of the things that are not presently considered could lead to some practical improvements in the operation.

Minerals: When man first picked up an appropriately shaped stone and fastened it to a stick of wood to create a primitive axe or hammer he started down the long road of mineral dependency that has continued until today (Fig. 2). Though he did not realize it, that man and his stone axe created an extremely simple form of mineral economy. The struggle against extinction from that day has been fought with minerals. In addition to providing himself with a means to fight for survival, he also exhibited an increase in intelligence. As his curiosity was stimulated, his ability increased to provide himself with better mineral and metal weapons and tools. Today, when we examine the artifacts of past civilizations, we measure the degree of development that had been attained by the variety of metals and minerals possessed and how they were used. The metals employed are so characteristic of the level of intelligence that we have named the various stages of human progress by the metals that were most commonly utilized. Thus, mall went through the Stone Age, the 13ronze Age, the Iron Age and now has reached the Steel Age. The first period of mineral development, the Stone 4ge, began during late Pliocene time. In this first mineral age, prehistoric man began to shape stones by chip- ping off small pieces until the stone assumed the crude form he wanted. As his intelligence increased, he progressed to finer workmanship and turned out finished spear heads and barbed arrows. Throughout this very

A BRIEF sketch only is here intended, with a few illustrations, in order to give a general notion of the character and structure of these veins. I have stated elsewhere, several years ago, that these veins were wrought on a large scale and for many ages by some ancient peoples, most probably the so-called Mound Builders; although they built no mounds here, and have left no signs of any permanent habitation. They opened and worked a great many veins down to or near water-level ; that is, as far as the action of atmospheric chemistry had softened the rock so that it was workable without metal tools, of the use of which no signs are apparent. Many of the largest and most profitable of the mines of the present day are simply the ancient Mound Builders&apos; mines reopened and pushed into the hard undecomposed granite by powder and steel. Blocks of mica have often been found half imbedded in the face of the vein, with the tool-marks about it, showing the exact limit of the efficiency of those prehistoric mechanical appliances. SANDSTONE has been prepared for glassmaking purposes, and marketed from the White River Valley in-Arkansas at Guion, Izard County, since about 1910-soon after the completion of the White River Branch of the Missouri Pacific R. R. Co. Until 1921, operations were somewhat spasmodic and ended in many failures. In that year a plant was built by the Silica Products Co., Inc., and since that time the operation has been continuous and steady. The land is held under leases, covering about 30 sq. mi. of the best sandstone adjacent to the railroad. Most of the product is shipped to glassmakers. GEOLOGY The St. Peter sandstone is rather widely distributed in north central Arkansas and- is exposed most prominently in outcrops along the slopes of the White River Valley and its tributaries that form the division between the Boston Mountains to the south and the Salem Plateau of the Ozarks to the north. It is of Ordovician age and is generally underlain by Cotter dolomite and capped by Plattin limestone, except in the vicinity of Bellefonte and Everton. At those places, it is a massive cross-bedded, laminated, saccharoidal sandstone; underlying it is the Everton limestone and overlying it, the Joachim magnesium limestone. The sandstone at Everton contains numerous phosphatic pebbles and inclusions of sandy limestone. The irregularity of cross-section, the evidence of sorting action and the phosphatic pebbles appear to be indications of secondary deposition.

Surface mining of coal is widely condemned as a despoiler of the countryside and wastrel of land and natural resources. Yet the fact has been as widely ignored that the ingenuity of those engaged in developing the methods and equipment utilized in surface mining have made several hundred million tons of coal available for utilities and industry which could never have been mined by any other method. While doing this, the surface mining companies have recovered nearly 100% of the coal in the mining area instead of approximately 50% as is common in underground methods. Efficiency has been increasing constantly, thereby maintaining low cost to the customer. Mining has provided economic health in many areas by virtue of the direct payrolls and by the attraction of other industries to enjoy low cost, dependable fuel supplies. Surface mining of coal generally falls into two categories: contour mining, which is the result of mining in hilly or mountainous terrain where the hillside or slope limits the width of the area which can be surface mined; and area mining, which results from the surface of the land being approximately parallel with the coal seam so that a wide area may be mined in a succession of pits or open cuts.

Zinc smelters in the central western States have established a very high standard of purity for blende-concentrates, viz., zinc 60, iron less than 3, and lead less than 1 per cent. The very low percentage of iron is made possible by the blende containing less than 0.5 per cent. of isomorphous iron sulphide and by the sparing occurrence of pyritic material in the large blende-deposits of southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. The blende in these districts occurs in sub-carboniferous limestone, and is associated with chert, residual clay, cal-cite, pyrite or marcasite and bitumen. The different minerals are coarse and therefore readily separated by mechanical washing from the blende, with the exception of pyrite and marcasite, as blende has a specific gravity of from 3.9 to 4.1; marcasite, from 4.85 to 4.90; and pyrite, from 4.95 to 5.10. The common procedure of dressing the ores&apos; is to crush in a breaker, size in a trommel with 0.5-in. holes, pass the over-size through roughing-rolls and then jig the ore, now reduced to 0.5 in. maximum size, in roughing multiple-sieve jigs. The products of these are waste-tailings, side-discharge coarse concentrates, side-discharge coarse middlings and bottom-discharge fine middlings. The coarse concentrates are sent to the market. The coarse middlings are crushed in middlings-rolls and brought back into the system by feeding into the main trommel. The fine middlings are cleaned upon finishing-jigs.
